I’ll admit that I cringed a bit. I was waiting for actual damage to be caused. But I’m glad to see that the install happened to go well, and it doesn’t look too bad.
The manufacturer should really have the "catch" mechanisms already integrated in the hood. Then the consumer just has to install the pins.
Love the videos man keep it up. I just bought myself a 2020 STI after my 2018 wrx was totalled in a car accident, I'm super happy with the new car!
I actually had a carbon hood fly up and it shattered my windshield, dented the f out of my roof and destroyed my hood, had to go to local pep boys and buy a cheap set of pins just to make it home. The latch actually broke off. I was about 3 hours away. If you ever experience something like this doing 80mph on the interstate, you’ll fully grasp why hood pins are a must,
I want a carbon hood for my STI but I don't think I can drill into it 😭
I heard dampers. Those may eventually damage your hood. They're meant for a heavier hood and can stress/crack/break the hood.
You are so brave!! I could never! It looks awesome!
It’s satisfying to watch people work on cars. Good video!
Awesome video man! Amazing job. And ty for the video
After you drill your hole, you can brush a lil bit of resin between the carbon if it separates depending on your car for added stability. Use tape to avoid drips on top though and be very careful 👌🏽
Don't cut or grind the latch. Bend the pin.
I’m watching do I don’t ruin my seibon hood myself and I just got my aerocatch kit today. One thing i will use is a spade bit to drill the hole
are these necessary for a kevlar hood ?
You could have had an extra person to hold up the shop vac hose to help with the dust. Put those damn kids to work! Hahaha great content as always man.
😂So true!
My carbon fiber hood with no hood pins popped up on the highway today :o , thankfully not all the way up.
I want to get a carbon hood, but not sure I want to deal with cutting into the $1000 hood.
My hood and windshield got wrecked twice cause the latches failed, so getting new latches and good pins :(
I bought some of the non drilling ones on Amazon today. Gonna give it a try. Dont think I have the guts of drilling into the hood. Lol.
I have read and seen that hood pins are a throw back to the old days of racing and recommended with lighter hoods be they CF or other as a safety precaution. Intuitively it makes sense also. Regardless you are stuck with them now, fully committed; but for what it is worth I think they look sharp.
Do I have to do this if I purchase a Carbon fiber Demon hood?
Did you choose the orientation on the hood pins or are they supposed to be angled like that.
The way the radiator support is, thats really the only way I could get it to work.
is there anything special you do when washing the engine bay? precautions?
Not really. Don't spray the air filter and alternator.
Where did you get the hood from?? Also how’s the stock hood latch holding up with this hood??
I would get in touch with the guys at The Mod Garage for deals on this hood.
Car is rad 🥵 VIBES 🌊
Hey brother, what tool do you use to clean up the hole?
Dremel
Just started following your build. Great content tho 👍
You should see my face when you drilled that carbon fiber 😳 but it looks really good. Great setup! Hey what coilovers are you running?
Thanks man! Fortune Auto 510.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained! It's good to leave your comfort zone haha.
Balls of steel bro... nice job
Bro...I'd rather do TGV deletes and injector than do this job again. 😂
I have the same hood on my 19 WRX but no way in hell I would do this to my hood. I understand why but I just couldn't 😔
Could hear the anxiety in each breath you took
That took a set of nuts!!
Bro...this took a lot of courage to do. 😂
change the balls size, you can install the stock Hydraulic lever
A stepper drill bit and a faster drill would've had better results. Learned this the hard way too.
Yes eye protection and respirator!
I just ordered the same hood for my sti but I don’t think I’ll have the courage to drill holes in it your my hero lol
How has it holded up in the highway with no hood pins? I’m worried I just ordered mine and don’t want to drill into it
@@slatty2457 sadly it didn’t fit I had to return it :(
@@godscar2663 how come it didn’t fit? Too much gap?
@@slatty2457 yup I try adjusting it was wayyyy off
Not fiberglass, it's carbon fiber, ie the fibers are carbon not glass. Respirator may still be good but not because it's fiberglass.
Measure twice drill once
At last, someone that is doing it right. When you get a CF Hood, you MUST install hood pins. Thank you for the video.
why don’t you have to install them?
@@donovan8234 Yes, you have to install them
@@donovan8234due to high pressure build up under the hood from well air and its not as heavy as the oem hood thus being prone to ripping off at ive seen least 100mph
So whats wrong with the oem hood latch?
It's not the hood latch that fails. It's the fiberglass that it is bolton onto fails.
@@CarsWithJR Ohhh right cause you have a carbon hood. I was like, I thought the stock hood was aluminum. Gotcha
So much water. Not a Varis right?
VIS Racing
Can we get this video without the music
That was painful to watch lol. But epic.
My fav part of the video is you clickbait title. Makes me glad to see that it's a year later and your view counts are roughly the same 😘
whats the point to have hood pins when you still have to pop the hood ???
The latches that come with aftermarket hoods are know to fail while driving after some time and could potentially fail and smash into you windshield while driving. Hood pins are a preventative measure so that never happens.
Thanks for explaining that! 100% true. 👌
These looks at least as good as aerocatch but are waaay easier to install. One 20 mmm (0.079 inch) hole is all you need.
www.speeding.nu/p/interior-exterior/exterior/push-clips/hurricane-push-clips-snabblas-315mm-svart.html
It will not work due to the angle of the hood. Those latches need to be vertical in order to catch/lock. In fact, I tried that exact same latch first before I swapped to aerocatch.
@@CarsWithJR I have the same VIS- carbonhood you have and it works just fine. I use those on my VIS-carbonhood ( same modell as you) and the angle is far away from a problem. Hurricane dont need to be straight to catch like the aerocatch need. If you have tried it and it dont work it was a bad copy:) for that is the whole menaing of Hurricane, that the angel dont need to be 90 degress between the hood and bolt. I tried aerocatch to first but i thought it was to much work. I can level Hurricane almost 30 degres and it stil catch the "probehead" on the bolt. I mounted them in my hood and the angle is just 10-20 degres. I also tried it before i mount it and it worked equal good in all levels between 0 - 20-30 degres. But i mount my a bit longer back then you. Maybe thats is the difference.
That top layer of the hood is too thin for the hood to have them screws going through, later on those small hole will start to spider crack, if I’d do it all over again I would’ve filled inn the hood on where I cut with fiberglass so the top layer & the bottom layer of the hood are supported.
I clinched my cheeks the whole time watching this
Damn I think I would’ve removed the hood and did all that outside
Yeah, I would have...but it was cold and rainy.
Nice😍🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
So I get your sides skirt now right?
I know it's for a good cause, but it hurts watching that hood get drilled into lol
Yeah. it sure took a lot of courage. It took months for me to grow enough balls to do it.
I've had the suspension for my Si for a few years and still haven't taken the initiative to install them. I trust myself, but I also dont.
What hood is this? Vis?
Yes, VIS.
@@CarsWithJR and the hood pins were to secure it better because the way it comes isn’t as safe? Only asking because I’m thinking about getting one for my 19 sti
ive been 145 in my 15 wrx hundreds of times on the autobahn in the last few years and still never seen the hood even wobble like my old chevy. So I would say these concerns arent that valid. The stock hood and latch are sufficient
The stock hood is fine. I have a CF hood.
@@CarsWithJR so was this more necessary for you because the cf hood doesnt have all the little rubber sealants? I was nervous for you watching you cut into that hood haha
@@jonnythunder76 Most CF hoods are reinforced with fiberglass and not aluminum like the stock hood. The fiberglass can stress and crack over time.
First!! If thats still a thing. :)
Best sti ever thenks friend
No shrouds 🤔
Freddie Cortez I noticed that too. What happened with the carbon fiber ones
Filmed before the shrouds. 👍
@@CarsWithJR 🙌🏼
Drives me crazy you keep calling carbon fiber fiberglass.
Most carbon fiber hoods you see is just a fiber glass hood with carbon fiber weave + resin on it.
Good prime example is this guy's hood. Its not a 100% carbon fiber hood. As I mentioned above, his hood is a fiber glass hood with a carbon fiber weave layer on top added with resin / clear coat.
Watching this is making me cringe lol
I cringed so hard
I hate to say it, bit if you need extra latches on your $1000 hood, you either wasted $1000 on a shit product or you have too much faith in internet mythology.
Would u do this for me if I bring my subie to u? xD
I don't have it in me to do it again. :(
My WRX Channel this.... cutting into brand new $1k+ carbon is the most anxiety inducing DIY there is, I feel like. And I’m stressing out about it just as bad the second time around having to do the wife’s hood next. Know this is a 2 month old comment, but I’m seeing it just now as I came back for a quick refresher. Thanks for posting this guide bro. Seibon is even harder to find mounting points that agree with the surface body lines
Clickbait
Why would you drill from the underside 🤦🏻♂️ You always go from the opposite side you don’t want it to look like shit on so it bust out the other side.
It was a pilot hole for the other side.. the whole area was cut out around that hole and covered with a latch..
