Ironically, partly one of the causes of how small the manufacturing sector is because of how PBBM's own father sequestered so many production companies during his 20-year regime that private sector companies found that some 'safer" industries, so to speak, to invest and operate in are in real estate and commercial development. Hence an economy dominated by real estate, services, exported migrant labor/remittances and agriculture, infrastructure, but a laughably small manufacturing sector. So... he might have inherited the problem, sure, but not just figuratively but literally.

Like Stephen, I’m equal parts impressed and frustrated at how our neighbors Vietnam have just shot passed us in terms of tourism (Well, perhaps some other things too , but that’s a discussion for a different day)
They are figuring it out so quickly, and are now able to really show off their own beautiful country . When one thinks about how much of a shorter runway to progress they have had compared to the Philippines over the past decades, it’s almost startling.
I am certainly not advocating for a one party system, but there HAVE to be some learnings we can take from such success stories in the region ..

Vietnam had surpassed the Philippines since the Duterte regime - in almost all economic arena, not just tourism. And they don't even have private land ownership.

You will need a one party system to succeed or at least a stable one party government for 2-3 decades. And you will have to stop politicking and start working. People must want to get rich and not just go to heaven. Birth control and education should be the first priority. You can't invest in anything if you keep spending all your money feeding and managing an ever growing population.
You need investment, at some point you will have to constraint your pride and work with China. China has surplus funds, technology and the BRI. Vietnam is growing because of China.

There are also many Malaysian Chinese companies in Vietnam because of its labor cost and proximity to China. They may have disagreements but they are both communist lead and share similar cultures.
