Doing this research will make you a more informed and confident job prospect. It can even tilt the hiring process a little bit to your favor.

Thank you for the reddit tip - I didn't have that on my radar. To the question, why the predecessor left the now vacant job: imo one should absolutely ask this. It's about the reaction of the interviewer - it's telling al lot.
Yes, reddit can be a gold mine.
And yes, just watch the face of the interviewer when you ask the question. The look will tell you almost everything you need to know. Then the stumbling and panic later will finish the job :)
This level of research is great if they actually respond, asking to schedule an initial interview. I wouldn't do this much research if they haven't even called me back. When was applying for jobs, I submitted over 100 applications--all to roles that I have skills in--and only about 15 reached out for an initial interview. I can't imagine doing the amount of research I did on the 15 to the 85 where my application went straight into the trash. I probably wouldn't have even gotten out 100 applications at that rate.
The goal of the research is to NOT send 100 applications, but rather a handful. Carefully targeted to the roles and companies you want.
So much effort only to get laid off before the holidays. The world has changed. No one cares this much. Just do enough in the interview, take you money and leave.
