It depends on what you want the car for. I have a 2006 Grand Marquis. If you get a Panther car, you definitely want a 2003 and up. There were major changes and improvements in 2003. The front end is all new. Rack and pinion steering. The steering and front suspension on these is built like a tank. Tougher than some trucks. Mine does have a tachometer. It's pretty worthless in a luxury car, but it's there. Mine also has a single exhaust (though it doesn't hang down like that) and an open diff. It also has 2.73 gears. Which is exactly what I want. this car will cruise down the road at 65 mph just above idle with the overdrive on (button on the end of the shifter) and get 30 mpg on flat, level roads. It is smooth and quiet, and rides almost like a '70s Cadillac. Again, that's what I want. This is a V8 powered, body on frame, rear wheel drive, luxury land yacht. It is not a sports car. I have an '03 Mustang for that. This is a cross country car. Put a drink in the cup holder, turn on some '70s music, set the cruise control, and sit back and relax for 400 miles before you need to stop for gas. Mine has the stock stereo, and it even has a cassette player. I connect my MP3 player to it with a cassette adaptor. These cars also last forever. After 2001 they improved the plastic intake manifold so is not nearly so prone to cracking. I have 238,000 miles on mine, and it has only had three problems. One was an alternator failure, well over 100,000 miles ago, a $50 Autozone alternator fixed the problem. Next, the rear air suspension failed. The air bags sprung a leak. That is a seriously expensive repair IF you replace the air bags. But you don't have to, and I don't recommend it. I replaced the air bags with coil springs, and replaced the original rear shocks while I was under there. Under $300 in parts, and I can't tell any difference in the ride. Still just floats over the road, like a Grand Marquis should. The third problem, unfortunately, cannot be repaired. I have the Performance White paint, and a bunch of it has peeled off. This color of paint was defective from the factory. You can't repaint the car without completely removing ALL the old paint. It's not really bothering me, my next one will be some other color besides white.
But this car has gone 238,000 miles with NO engine problems and NO transmission problems. I have seen them with over 400,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. I was going to replace the engine/transmission and whatever it takes to keep mine going forever, but by the time they wear out, probably most of the paint will have peeled off. I will likely just get another low mile creampuff to replace it with. In a different color. I don't mind paying $8,000-$10,000 for a low mileage Grand Marquis in near perfect condition. You think that is expensive, just look at the price of any new car. Around $50,000. Plus new cars are JUNK. The CEO of Ford just admitted publicly that new Ford vehicles are JUNK. A Panther car will last literally forever. 4.6L 2 valve engines and AODE transmissions are cheap and plentiful. They literally grow on trees. If you have a decent non rusted Panther car, just keep replacing engines and transmissions every few hundred thousand miles. Unless it gets destroyed, a Panther car can last another 50 years easily for a tiny fraction of what it costs to buy, finance, and insure several new cars.
Maintenance. I change my engine oil every 3000 miles, with 10w30 (not 5w30) I replaced the stock transmission pan with one from Dorman (yes, I know they make a lot of junk, but their transmission pans are fine) with a drain plug. I drain the pan and refill it every 9,000 miles, and drop the pan and change the fluid and filter every 27,000 miles. it's nice to be able to drain the pan before removing it. i drain out all the coolant that will come out and replace it once a year. Oh, and I also replace the rear axle oil every 27,000 miles, when I do the transmission fluid and filter. There are very few things on these cars that a mechanically inclined owner cannot do. They are 10 times better than the technowhizbang trash they are making now.
EDIT: What you have there is a whale. Aeros were made from 1992-1997, whales were made from 1998-2012.

I had a 1997 and a 2000 crown vic and grand marquis once I put new tires on both cars and proper alighnment it was a great driving car in all weather. I never had any issues driving in rain. I have a very heavy right foot and could drive the wheels of the cars. I miss my big couch on wheels and I was getting 25-28 mpg on a regular basis and I drove them hard. I had a lot of fun messing with mustang on the road that thought they would walk my vic and I would smoke them. It was a lot of fun driving in snow with either car I had they would grip and run all day long on my long drive to work. I put a can of stop leak in all the fluids and all the little leaks went away. If I ever find a clean 97 vic again I know it would be fun driving one again. The only issue I ever really had with both cars was a mysterious oil leak that a can of bars stop leak fixed as long as you put it back in every oil change. I guess when you drove the same car for 25 years you get used to how they handle and learn how to have fun year round driving. I kept the tires stock size on both cars and the 15" vic was nicer in deep snow driving over the 16" on the grand marquis that wanted to float more. I still had a blast driving either car no matter the conditions.

I currently drive a 1995 Grand Marquis Ls that I bought 4 years ago with 108000 miles for 700 dls.It had issues like the heater didn’t work and still doesn’t but I will finally fix it in about 3 weeks, there was an engine oil leak coming from the oil filter housing gasket which was 250 dls to fix around 3 and hakf years ago.The gasket that is on the fuel filler pipe leaked a lot of fuel at the top that was 200 dls to fix around 1 year and a half ago. There was a small coolant leak in a hose located in the middle top of the engine which was around 180 dls to fix and yes the front driver side window broke already which got fixed, but now the front passenger side window is starting to brake.Driving in the snow is manageable if you have skills like I do,I put winter studded tires on the car.The main issue I have is the oil burning,I think they said is a defect on the engine design oj the valve seal seats or something like that.I had someone replaced the valve cover gasket and whatever comes in the kit because I was replacing the spark plugs and found oil on one of the spark plug wire
boots, and also replaced the intake manifold gasket as the mechanic said that needed to be fixed. But I still need to add 1 quart of oil every 2 weeks.I even added restore oil treatment in my last oil change and didn’t seem to help with th oil burning issue.I wish I would had done more research and would had bought a newer model like 1998 or newer, but the car is comfortable and has never left me stranded on the side of the road. The car has 156000 miles.2nd gear slips sometimes since I bough it.I cut off the factory muffler all the way to the end of the tail pipe and replaced it with a sound fx turbo muffler my wife gave me for Christmas 2 years ago and sounds decent, way better than factory quiet.I will take the car to MAACO for a cheap paint job in 1 year or 2.

I bought a 1996, but I test drove a 1997 Grand Marquis, first. The dash had, "Grand Marquis" in huge letters- pretty distinctive, and a beautiful car. The chrome grill without a hood ornament makes it "flow" better into the hood. If it weren't rusty underneath, I would have bought it. This guy is really, really nitpicking. Rust, rust, rust. That's should be your first, second, and third consideration with rear wheel drive Panthers. A power steering pump is not to difficult or expensive to fix.
P.S. The window motors have plastic bearings because Ford didn't want to see news reports of kids and pets having their heads chopped off. If you don't have kids, you can replace the plastic window motor bearings with metal bearings, as the previous owner of my Town Car did. I can easily crack walnuts or cut kindling with my driver's side window. As far as the rear power windows of the car in this video go; after over 2 decades, obviously, something is worn, internally. These windows were not off track when they were delivered to the customer. It has zero to do with Ford's "aero" body style. The car is old. Things wear out after over 2 decades. Just be grateful that you received a pretty reliable and luxurious car for not much money.

Have a 96 crown vic. I have no idea what its issue is currently, but it runs pig rich, and loves to occasionally stall when stopping. Changed the plugs a couple of months back. Bank 2 looked fine, but every single plug on bank 1 was caked in carbon fouling. Thing is being an absolute headache without a decent scan tool to look at what my sensors are telling me. Oddly enough, it runs worse between -5°C and 5°C thrown in a couple used maf sensors and a used iat sensor, with no luck. Codes for both banks system rich and sensor indicates rich. @stephenbuckland492 Год назад +2

@Vintage Fan Collector it's possible. The valve has been replaced. The tube fitting nut on the exhaust manifold had a valve cover leak dripping onto it for a while. I'm wondering if I'm getting a leak at that fitting that might be confusing the o2 sensors. Since the egr tube comes off the bank 1 manifold. Sensors might be correcting for a minor lean condition until I get on it, then it starts running way too rich? I have no idea. All I know is I can't get a new fitting nut to replace when I change the manifolds. Cat delete may also have something to do with it, but I can't say.

This is my first aero year, (97 LS) and it's free of issues, mine has a locked diff tho no one wheelie peelies. But that single exhaust sounds great if done right, my last car was a straight piped '00 p71, and it sounded great but the single pops and seems to have a lot more bottom end torque. learn your door code or add your own personal code to the keypad entry....code on the the trunk hinge-5 digit-white sticker... type in the code and then hit the (1-2) button and then type in your new code, if it took your new code, all the doors will lock and unlock to show successful programming...

    • @Kuson2

Correct. He made a few errors in the video along those lines. '98-'02 panther cars have more in common with '92-'97 panther cars than the '03+ ones do. My '99 P71 even has the aero vic interior, its nearly identical. Rear suspension a little different vs aero cars but other than that and being a bit heavier, the are basically the 90's cars through and through. Much more of a visual facelift than a mechanical one, the true refreshes and changes started in 2003.

Ive had 5 plus a Mark8. The 8 had great seats and engine, but rode like an escort with 60# of air in the tires. Pretty sad for 4 air bags.
