First film together, Stan was 31, Ollie 29. Next year marks 100 years since its release when film had no sound nor color, yet I am watching this on my iPhone.
Their work has stood the test of time and will continue to endure, where ever you are boys, thank you and may you both Rest In Peace.

For anyone interested: The producer Maxwell "Broncho Billy" Anderson made a whole series of films starring Stan Laurel, after he returned to the film industry in 1919, after taking a 5-year break to produce live theatre in New York. Anderson was a giant of the early film industry, having acted in over 300 fllms and of course creating the star character Broncho Billy in a series of westerns. As a director, he is credited as being the originator of the pie-in-the-face routine, which first appeared in the 1909 film Mr. Flip. A Lucky Dog was a run-of-the-mill short and he was probably unaware of director Jess Robbins' casting of Hardy as the heavy villain, and it had no significance at the time. Anderson quit the movie industry again soon after this film was made in 1920, but 30 years later he started his own studio Progressive Pictures. He was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1958 for his work in films and made a guest appearance as an actor, at the age of 85, in The Bounty Killer. He died in 1971, but his enduring legacy of the pie in the face, will always produce a laugh. Little did he know that in A Lucky Dog he had brought together the greatest laughter-making team in history.

Laurel's eyes wouldn't photograph properly - blue photographed as white. This problem is apparent in their first silent film together, The Lucky Dog, in which an attempt was made to compensate for the problem by making-up Laurel's eyes very heavily. For about a year, Roach had Laurel work at the studio as a writer. Then panchromatic film was developed, they did a test for Laurel, and found that the problem was solved.

It wasn't.
As Randy Skertvedt pointed out in his book "Laurel and Hardy: the magic behind the movies", this movie couldn't be filmed in 1917 as some historians have mistakenly guessed, since the dynamite is termed by Hardy as "some Bolshewiki candy" and therefore the shooting must have taken place in 1919 after the Russian revolution.
I believe that a car registration number or for my cousins across the pond like to say the license plate was an early 1921 on one of the vehicles use in this short picture. Film historian Rob Stone explains more on the "The Laurel & Hardy Blogcast" podcast episode 2, which is very good by the way.

Is Laurel wearing eyeliner?
Yes, it was common in the early days of film, when most stock was orthochromatic. Subtle shades of light and dark didn't show up very well and make-up was used for emphasis. As panchromatic film became more universal after WW1 it was less of a problem.
@@mrsbrownandhercat I read an article a few years back about Laurel's early years which said his light blue eyes didn't show very well on this type of film, hence the eye shadow.

I would like to correct your mistakes about when was this filmed and on basis of examination of this film it was filmed in autumn and winter in 1920 and released a year later in December 1921 it was their first appearance together.

What's the song called at the beginning?
Obviously not the original opening credit, since at 0:11 we see him introduced as Stanley Laurel. I would imagine The Amalgamated Film Producing Company owned this print and distributed it with a new opening, since according to imdb.com the film was originally produced by Sun-Lite Pictures. This appears to be the only movie they produced, according to imdb.com.
I would like to see the original opening credit. I doubt Stan Laurel's name would have been above the title.
Interesting point about Sun-Lite. This movie is described as one of the Sun-Lite Comedy Series, though other movies in the "series" are elusive. Lloyd Hamilton's name is sometimes associated with Sun-Lite. What we do know is that Broncho Billy Anderson returned to the film industry in 1920 and agreed to produce a Jess Robbins screenplay called Lucky Dog. Robbins brought his own "heavy" with him - Babe Hardy, although Anderson's plan was to showcase the new star, Stan Laurel. Stan made his first film in 1917, Nuts in May, still with the name Stan Jefferson. By 1918 he was Stan Laurel, and his character Hickory Hiram was born the same year, in the movie of the same name produced by Nestor. This was the west cost division of Centaur Productions, centred on the Horsley family and using Al Christie's direction. Doesn't get us any further with Sun-Lite, but somebody will know more.

It was released on October 10th 1921 and made earlier that year. Florence Gilbert only started in movies in 1920. She was only 13 in 1917.
