Because of them, we might actually believe there was niceness and innocence and purity and joy present in 1930s Los Angeles.
There was not (well, certainly not in the elites and authorities of the city at any rate).
That is why they were ... literally ... God's gift.
And they had to be brought together for places thousands of miles apart in order to be so.

"Pick A Star" was supposed to be Rosina Lawrence's "star" vehicle for Hal Roach [she also co-starred with Stan & Ollie in "Way Out West", and portrayed "Our Gang"'s teacher in several of their 1936-'37 shorts]. The boys agreed to appear in two "brief" apperances during the film. The "director" in the first portion is none other than L&H's screen rival Jimmy Finlayson, minus his famous prop "walrus moustache". These sequences were also re-edited into a "two-reel" TV short, "A Day At the Studio".

That's why she continued to be under contract to Roach until he "converted" his studio to military productions in 1943. Rosina retired from the screen in 1939 to become "Mrs. Juvenal P. Marchisio" [through his death in 1973; she passed away 24 years later].

In film jargon a short is a films of Les running time than a feature that is complete in and of itself. Clip, or segment, from a larger opus is referred to differently. Scene, portion of, and many other synonyms are all apparently acceptable

The last short, Thicker than Water starring Laurel and Hardy in 1935. Stan and Ollie bought a grandfather Clock at the auction for $300, then they set the clock in the middle of the street and then the horseless carriage came by and run over the clock and destroyed the clock. Ollie's wife is filing for divorce from Ollie, and never want to see Ollie again.

This short wasn't quite as great as many of their fabulous shorts from the late 1920s and early to mid 1930s. L&H still had some great stuff in the late 30s such as Blockheads, Saps at sea, and Way out west. After 1940 was when they sort of slipped and passed their heyday. I will still always love them forever, and most classic films from Hollywood's Golden age

I've noticed several similarities in gags between the Three Stooges & Laurel and Hardy. I love them all but I can't help but wonder when it's a coincidence or when they "borrowed" the gag outright. For example, the Stooges had Moe swallow a harmonica the year before this film in Disorder in the Court (1936) and Larry and Curly played Moe's chest just like Stan Does here. Interestingly, the song in this Laurel & Hardy clip is Pop Goes the Weasel, which the Stooges used in Punch Drunks in 1934.

@Vegas01973, I can't say if the Laurel and Hardy harmonica bit was inspired by The Three Stooges routine, but I know there's an even greater abundance of material peformed by The Three Stooges that Laurel and Hardy did earlier. Although, in reality, a good portion of the generic gag concepts used by Laurel and Hardy as well as The Three Stooges likely far predate both teams.
