- In this video we'll be making a basic, but fun and useful VST instrument using standalone Flowstone but you can also use FL Studio Synthmaker / Flowstone which you can grab from FL Studio's website (just google FL Synthmaker). In just 10 minutes we'll have a playable instrument that can make a variety of sounds, and you'll learn some of the most important features of Flowstone to get you started making your own plugins!
If you'll like to learn more about creating plugins let me know in the comments :D

I would love to see more tutorials on flowstone and maybe even one dedicated just to a more intricate GUI.
I’m thinking about making a full e-course. If there’s anything specific you want to learn, let me know. I can cover all of the custom GUI stuff including designing knobs and buttons etc in other free software. - Ste
bro please do more this was amazing.
Thanks! I might release a course in future, there’s a lot of cool stuff to teach in Flowstone 🙂
@@RewiredRecords please do! followed your steps and having an issue where I can't export as VST (it's greyed out for some reason) so hoping you might cover that!
The VST export will only work if you have a MIDI in pin and the 2 x Sound Out (Blue) pins. If you are making an Effects plugin you’d need 2 x Blue inputs and 2 x Blue outputs.
Look at 10 minutes into this video. For vst export it needs to look like that. Put everything into a module with midi in and blue outputs
This is great.
you are a genius thank you
So sad to see such a development platform die unnoticed.
I agree. They haven’t officially said it’s dead and some of the community still believe it’s being developed but the newest version has been in production since about 2015 and is still not released 😅
@@RewiredRecords I would love to try the 64bit alpha or beta version, and like many users, happy to pay for it. But the current demo is only 32bits and I can't test.
@RecordingStudio9com you can get it from their Discord server
discord.gg/89uUj4H6
I think maybe Bitwig - The grid is the closest but I don't know if it can generate VST
Thank you !
Can you please make a Roland e 20 vst software program
It’s great but it’s not really vst development. It’s more like reaktor way of making your own stuff
You can go as simple or complicated as you like. You don’t need to use pre-built modules. You can use code or build your own complex modules from a mix of components and code etc
I have looked every where to import a Wave file into flowstone I have been told you can but how can you help
There’s a Wave Player / Sampler included in Flowstone. Try the search bar
www.dsprobotics.com/support/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=69
ok I got everything to work but, I get errors when trying to open the vst. it says its not a valid 64 bit vst plugin. What now? ANyone?
Which version of Flowstone do you have? In the newer alpha versions (64 bit) you need to install some Microsoft redistributable files.
www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=40784
@@RewiredRecords I don’t have the alpha
If you don’t have the Alpha there’s no way you could have exported 64 bit. The old version only exports 32 bit
@@RewiredRecords that makes sense. How do I get the alpha since it’s not out yet?
I got it from the Flowstone Facebook group
It just keeps saying that I have an error and that something is using my asio already but it is not. Can you please please help?
I’m not sure, sorry. Have you tried searching google for the error message it gives you?
Could you please show how to make unison such as multisaw, stereo? toggle with a button and select voices from a listbox?
I’m working on a course that will cover all of these things and more
@@RewiredRecords Thanks a lot! Appreciate
Thanks for video. I want to make a custom style plugin. It will allow change body, left menu, and top menu by switch radio buttons. Like it realized in the profile section, where we can change color theme. But I am disappointed with AJAX. Can you help me with advice. I am looking just for simplicity solution.
I’m not really sure what you mean. Like changing the screen to show different controls or changing colour / skin?
@@RewiredRecords I mean change colors in admin console by click button.
You can use a button and color dialog found in the toolbox. That would plug into any graphic elements you have with color inputs. If you wanted to change knobs or elements that don’t have a color input you’d use a ‘selector’ with different bitmaps plugged in and maybe a dropdown list to choose which one you want
@@RewiredRecords ok. I will try/ Thanks
Can you make your very own auto-tune/pitch correction VST plugin with flowstone?
Probably but not with the built in modules. If you learn to write code you can do a lot more things. I’ve never made one of those myself
@@RewiredRecords Okay thank you! I've been searching a lot and it seems nobody has ever actually made there own auto-tune/pitch correction that isn't a big company.
I would imagine it’s pretty technical. I wouldn’t know what to do
Can you make sampled plugins with this?
Yes 🙂 We have made several sample-based instruments
@@RewiredRecords Thanks
🔥🔥🔥
can you show how to install the fl version??
I don’t think it’s available on newer versions of FL
@@RewiredRecords ohh, thanks for helping though!
How to compile own code in flow stone? Can you make on video
You can use the Ruby or DSP modules to write code. Both of these are documented in the manual on the dsprobotics website.
how to export 64 bit vst ????
Can only be done in the Alpha version of Flowstone which isn’t officially released yet
Bro it says that direct sound could not br started... I've also closed the application that is using ASIO but still not working please help me...
Sorry man I’m not sure. Have you tried googling it?
@@RewiredRecords yes..but it didn't worked.. I've also tried to delete all of my music production softwares and also the asio but didn't worked.. it still says that to change the application or to change the output to direct audio...and i did it but nothing happened.. please..i want to make my own plugin...
@@RewiredRecords can i sign my songs to your label? And also can you distribute it?
Maybe can use the ASIO output module instead of direct output module.
It depends what genre your music is
Can you create a Rompler in flo ?
Yes, we have made them. You can use samples or SFZ files
i sound design,
how much do coders typically charge to make a synth?
i would do it my self but i have zero knowledge in coding lol.
No idea, would depend on what sort of synth it is and how long it would take. This is not a service I offer so I don’t know
@@RewiredRecords oh no worries bud, guess its time to hit the internet threads lol.
DSProbotics forum is the place to go
@@RewiredRecords thanks man ill check it out.
I'm guessing this is why every free synth sounds exactly the same.
Most synths, even paid synths, share a lot of the same basic features - waveforms, volume and pitch control, envelopes, filter, reverb and delay etc. A good synth will provide new functionality though, with unique features. This video just shows the very basics to get started but of course you would need to expand upon this to create something unique
@@RewiredRecords Yeah, there's a channel I follow (Elektrick Musick) who demos just about every new VST plug in that comes along, especially the free synths - and they all sound exactly the same!
It's strange to me that some of the paid manufacturers are modelling old analogue synths by making the kind of plugin you showed here. You might think a sawtooth wave is a sawtooth wave, but the imperfections and manufacturing tolerances of the old analogue circuits led to some quite peculiar sounding instruments, and whilst some recreations sound very authentic many do not.
I suppose for me it comes down to the number of presets and the user interface. I have my favourites, and I have ones I cannot get on with.
So much variety!
Is it possible to get the project's bpm somehow?
Yeah. I’m not on pc at the moment but I’m sure you just search Bpm or tempo in the toolbox
@@RewiredRecords Wow thanks guy! I was searching bpm and I didn't think to search tempo lol.
is there an alternative for mac?
SynthEdit but it’s not as nice in my opinion
@@RewiredRecords Alright thanks
It looks like Flowstone is a dead project. It wasn't updated since 2016. It is still in beta 3.0.9 since 2016. It's misleading that under the buy menu, you can buy it for 149 USD with 12 month upgrade.
The beta version of the 64bit Flowstone is available, I’m using it now. I’ve only paid once, I won’t be paying for any upgrades until a new version is officially released. You can join the Facebook group or slack to get the beta versions and hear about updates. There is plenty of work being done but I don’t know why it’s taking so long for an official release
