  • Finland's president and prime minister have called for the country to apply for NATO membership as soon as possible.
In a joint statement, Sauli Niinisto and Sanna Marin said: "NATO membership would strengthen Finland's security. As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defence alliance. Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay".
It's the first step in a process that could see Finland roll back decades of military non-alignment.
The announcement is expected to put pressure on Sweden, which is also considering applying to join the western military defence alliance. Finland shares a 1300 kilometre border with Russia. The mood in Finland has changed dramatically since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

      @ERRATAS 0202 ,
I take it you haven’t done your homework?
Here’s a history lesson, if you read it, you might realise why the PRIM, (Putin’s Russian Incompetent Military), isn’t doing as well as they thought they would in any of the major Wars it’s been involved in since 1945,
British SAS, German KSK, eFP & JEF:-
Ukraine are training with the British SAS and for the past 8 years, they have also been training with the American Special Forces,
The German KSK was Established with the aid of the British SAS and regularly do their training with the SAS,
Whilst the eFP (enhanced Forward Presence) in the Baltic states Poland are also made up of 900 British troops,
The 2016 NATO Summit in Warsaw set the conditions for the establishment of an enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to strengthen Euro-Atlantic security.
      ENHANCED FORWARD PRESENCE
Operation Cabrit is the name of the UK operational deployment to Estonia where British troops are leading a multinational battlegroup as part of the enhanced Forward Presence (eFP).
UK Armed Forces have a leading role in NATO’s eFP in the Baltic States, in order to enhance Euro-Atlantic security, reassure our Allies and deter our adversaries.
The eFP in the Baltic States is a deployment of robust, multinational, combat-ready forces to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, on a persistent, rotational basis.
About 900 British personnel rotate on a continuous basis alongside Danish, French, and host nation Estonian forces.
In Poland, a Light Cavalry Squadron from the Royal Dragoon Guards, of approximately 140 personnel, as part of a US-led battlegroup composed of a battalion of the California National Guard as well as Romanian and Croatian contributions.
Additional units include elements from the Adjutant General’s Corps, Intelligence Corps, Royal Artillery, Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers, Royal Engineers, Royal Logistics Corps, Royal Military Police, and Royal Signals. The enhanced Forward Presence is just one aspect of a wide range of UK support to NATO.
The UK Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) is a United Kingdom-led expeditionary force which may consist of, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. Eight of the countries are also members of NATO, with Finland and Sweden currently outside that alliance.
Launched in 2015, the joint force has continued to develop and will become fully operational, which could mean the mobilisation of 10,000 troops to respond quickly to a range of issues, using combat power, deterrence or humanitarian support.
Spearheaded by the UK, Sweden and Finland make the JEF a nine-nation-strong pool of forces, alongside Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Norway. The JEF builds on many years of experience between the UK and these countries.
During the Ebola outbreak a Dutch ship worked alongside the Royal Navy, and the Norwegians provided twice weekly C130 flights to support the UK response to the crisis.
This example of joint work is a clear example of the kind of humanitarian support the JEF will be able to provide.
The JEF concept is distinct from existing international organisations, and can operate alone, but has the ability to integrate with other multinational high-readiness forces, and can support NATO, EU, and UN forces.
So they are all trained by the SAS or are joint forces lead by the UK forces that are SAS trained, along with the SAS they also have training from the American Special Forces on using their High Tech equipment in battle environments, to help defend their own or any other Allies countries,

Why would Finland think that Russia would honor nonaggression treaties and agreements when they broke them by invading Ukraine? Russia and Ukraine signed a Friendship, Partnership and Cooperation agreement in 1997 establishing in part 'the inviolability of existing borders and territorial integrity' but Russia didn't honor that one or any other treaty they signed with Ukraine. Russia can't be trusted. PERIOD

Just semantics here but its not so much Russia proper that didn't honor the agreement as it was Putin. So if Ukraine wins this war absolutely, expels the Russians and recaptures the Donbas then it's very likely they can be included if Ukraine either A.) recaptures Crimea and settles the issue with Russia after Russia's defeat or B.) gives up Crimea and settles the issue with Russia. As long as Ukraine has the Donbas situation and territorial conflicts with Russia involving Crimea then it's just not going to happen. Finland gave up their territorial claims on the land they lost to Russia (despite them actually winning that war if I remember correctly) ages ago so Finland is in a perfect situation to join as they have no internal or external territorial conflicts.

Russian troops/infrastructure near the boarder gets hit somehow/false flag event by US to look like Finland or similar type of event.
Russia responds with attacks on Finland' troops/infrastructure - NATO rule "countries with boarder disputes are not permitted to enter NATO". Finland's in limbo ...
Sweden Norway maybe get into NATO?

Finland have a standing army of 280,000 and a reserve of 900,000 who have been highly trained to fight the Russians, and Russia only. In fact, while Ukraine has a much smaller army and had been preparing since 2014, Finland have been preparing for nothing else but this since WW2, so not an opponent Russia would like to anger or poke right now, while being highly stuck in Ukraine.
If what we see from Russia in Ukraine is the best they can deliver now, then they would stand no chance against Finland that has a top modernized army that has been training for this since the last time they faced Russia.
Back then The Red Army had more than 1 million soldiers already deployed on the borders of Finland, before the mobilization, while Finland had just 33,000. The Soviet deployed 2,318 aircraft, including 1,044 fighters and 855 bombers and 395 others for strategic bombing, paratroop insertion, reconnaissance, artillery observation, and so forth.
Finland only had 114 out of date aircrafts, but fortunately, due to diplomatic efforts they were able to secure additional aircrafts assembled in Sweden, 30 from the UK, 30 from France, 29 from South Africa, besides Finland themselves buying 35 Italian Fiat G.50 monoplanes to take down Soviet bombers. The only organized foreign air unit to help out Finland was a Swedish volunteer squadron.
At the end, the Winter War cost Finland 24,923 dead or missing, while the Soviet fatalities numbered 273,000 dead, so more than 10 times more than ill prepared Finland. In fact, the combined Soviet casualties of dead and wounded was a quarter of the 1.2 million Soviet soldiers deployed.
This day and age, the army equipment of Finland is vastly more up to date and modern than that of Ukraine and what they have been receiving from NATO, so it's top NATO standard, and their very large army and reserves are vastly better prepared to face Russia, so if the Russian war machine is doing questionably in Ukraine, they would be totally pulverized in Finland.

"To roll back decades of military non-alignment"
It's not rolling back on non-alignment but reacting to a threat. Finns have been aware that Ru will propably threaten/invade again and that's why their military is up to date and has always been open to the possibility of joining Nato amd they are one of the most nato compatible countries in terms of hardware, but there wasn't a huge threat before and they didn't think Pubin is as insane as he is now.

But let us not forget that Putin is KGB. He had to have planned out every contingency for win/loss, and most likely has created some new type of warfare that he's confident will take out everyone else if people don't just kneel down to his authority. Finnish defense spending has been around 5 % of the budget for a while. I don't remember that ever being under 4 %, but that's how it is when you take care of your own defense without allies. Our conscripts and regulars have exercised with NATO countries for years, although that has been more bilateral cooperation than allied duties. Our weaponry is in NATO standards and we use NATO code in comms. So nothing really changes except saying publicly do svidanija to Russia and getting a few more military friends from abroad with obligations to help defend our long border, airspace and archipelago.

The Finns are a hardy people with a strong military tradition (with some exceptional marksmanship, and have some of the best light infantry on the planet) tend to be proud of their country and know well the peril that exists to the east of their border. Not to mention that they are a model of western democracy that has stood a test of both fire and time (a century so far, thats pretty good..... how many republics has France had in that time? >_>, the UK has changed its full proper name once or twice in that time too, not to mention the reorganization of the empire into the commonwealth....).
I think Finnish membership in NATO is a good thing for NATO and a good thing for Finland (and northern Europe in general). Two Finns I speak to regularly support it as well, to differing degrees. One likes it, sees NATO membership as a way of keeping Finland Finnish. The other is less enthusiastic, but sees value in it based on pragmatism. He would prefer not needing to do this, but knows it is likely what is needed right now. Both are fully on board with wanting their democracy to continue.

The the Turkish president has said that he does not look at it favorably, but if the blocks Finland joining, there will be some other strong alliance formed within EU, be is Pesco or something else. Not only would Finland make Nato stronger, not accepting Finland would make Nato significantly less unified.

Finland won't just have NATO as their allies. They also have Australia, South Korea, New Zealand and Japan (countries that aren't apart of NATO, but are allied with NATO). An attack on those 4 nations would also lead too a NATO response.

Would it work both ways? I'm not too confident that Europeans would support a country like South Korea or even Japan anywhere near as enthusiastically as they are supporting Ukraine. I fear that the burden would fall on the United States with significant assistance from the UK and Australia and perhaps Canada. European help with Taiwan would be even less forthcoming. I wish a committed "league of democracies' would supersede NATO, but I don't think that will happen. Twenty years after this war ends, I would expect many European citizens to return to security complacency, praising Russia and China, and blaming the US for all of the world's problems.

Most of finns have always realized that Russia is a threat. According to a saying: a rusky is a rysky even If fried in butter. We sucked that awareness already in mother’s milk. That’s why Finland has maintained a strong military but now we think we might need help and support from NATO. Russia has shown it’s ruthlessness to her neighbors.

Me as finnish army servile during wartime im reliefed that if war ever brokes out between ru and fi, it cant ever be masked "small cosmic operation at russia borders" like kreml wants world and their own people see this stuff what they do. Also being in nato gives higher chance succesfully defend and push back against ru if ever comes. Hopefully there will be no war anywhere and this nonsense ukraine war ends too.
