    Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews (ULEZ Non-Compliance Edition), the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time we have a 2010 Peugeot 407 Coupé 3.0 HDI V6 Sport, which probably doesn't merit the wearing of the corduroy jacket, as it is powered by the forbidden fuel and develops over 300 bhp, but, since we are here...

    These cars are VERY underrated. I've got a 2.0 HDi 407 Coupe, what amazes me is the engineering that goes into it. Double wishbone suspension at the front, multi-link at the rear. All aluminium subframes with suspension arms in aluminium, front AND rear. Now that is VERY rare, only the top end supercars get this suspension system... and the next Porsche 911 GT3 will be on double wishbone... which gives you an indication of importance. Did anyone know the bonnet itself is aluminium? All that is done to reduce weight and aluminium is NOT cheap, hence why the BMW/Merc/Audi's still use steel. Brakes at the front are twin piston callipers with offset piston diameters on 330mm brake discs. The damper/springs are inclined into the subframe which increases comfort yet gives you great handling. Cruise control is calibrated (i.e 70mph is a true 70mph). Powersteering on the non V6 models are electro-hydraulic - again, this is rare, only on the high-end AMG mercs and supercars, whereas most cars on the road are electric because it's cheaper and has a more dulled feel. It had the highest torsional stiffness of any PSA product and maxxed out the frontal crash test at EuroNCAP for that reason. HVAC system is dual zone which also allows vent control between driver and passenger... which again is very rare. There's a sunshine sensor and a pollution sensor which is used for optimal comfort and of course, a 1500w electric heater for instant heat in the cold mornings. As peugeot never designed it to have a RWD/4WD system, the cabin has more room. The greatest shame is that Pug never dropped in the 2.2HDi with twin turbo's into it... that would be the perfect engine for power, economy and handling - and most likely why this car was never that popular. The 2.0 HDi is a bit lethargic, the 2.7HDi were too expensive and the 2.2 petrol never offered the economy for company car drivers.

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! It was a very special and rare car, the level of engineering Peugeot put into what was very much a shrinking market sector at the time was ridiculous. It certainly wasn't that popular in the end, was it?

    The shape of the driver's seat is quite possibly the reason that Justin prefers to use this car. A very rare and striking coupe with a very strong engine.
    Ford achieved the same feat with the Ford Cougar which had love it or hate it looks. It was certainly striking and well appointed with a strong V6 which drove well. Ford also had the advantage of the name from the late 1960s Mercury Cougar coupe to add appeal just like the 406 Coupe had the Pininfarina styling to add appeal. Maybe Pininfarina would have done a great 407 Coupe. The Renault Laguna Coupe was drop dead gorgeous but, strangely, very rare.
    The masterstroke with the 407 Coupe is of course the V6 HDI. I would drive it at every opportunity also.

    I get the impression that many people seem to dislike the 407 for some reason. As I've never owned or even driven one myself I can neither confirm or challenge that opinion but this coupe is surely rare and powerful enough to be of some interest. The interior does look a tad dreary however.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 года назад

      Yes, I think the 407 was not very received when it was launched, probably because of that front end. Mind you, this one drove really well, it should do with all that power! Justin does have a leather dashboard to go in the car at some point which would brighten the interior up a bit.

      @Bercilak de hautdesert , I did just look it up, and you are quite right, the platform is similar to a C6 for these. The 2.2 was great in the 406 Coupé, that's for sure.
