@@AlbanianMidgetstatistics are completely against you. Despite this horrible incident. Flying is the still by far safest way to travel. And by a lot quite frankly. Here are the statistics. Flying is 190 times safer than driving. Which makes it 99.47% safer. This is deduced from a 2022 study which studies fatalities per 100 million. Where flying is at 0.003 per 100 million for flying, whereas driving is at 0.57 per 100 million.

This happens every hour of every day in thousands of locations across America. And it really has nothing to do with it being a military helicopter - civilian helicopters also operate in the vicinity of airports in big cities all the time, under the same visual flight rules. The helicopter crew just screwed up and lost situational awareness for some reason.
Needs to be accountability held for this, no excuses.

I was relaxing watching a few episodes of "Air Disasters" on TV because I enjoy the ones where they keep me on the edge of my seat and the outcomes are either safe landings or survivable miracles, then I switched channels not too long after this happened to hear about this tragedy which immediately made me follow coverage for hours in desperate hopes of them quickly attempting to rescue any survivors. 🤔😢
Been wondering when something horrible like this was going to happen. We’ve had so many incidents with commercial planes in the US the past few months. Very sad

Sometimes, rarely...very cold water will prevent someone from bleeding out if they are alive and don't drown. Rare, but it had accidentally saved lives before.

Military aircraft have designated airspace in a corridor along the Potomac with stringent regulations of altitude and flight path. They HAVE to because of all the Govmt functions of DC and the Pentagon including Embassadorial duties.
We DC area residents are used to helos from Fort Belvoir and Quantico.
I just found out my cousin and his family were on this plane. 😢

Flightpath who knows. But military helicopters opperate in civilian airspace all the time.
There is a military "corridor" up the Potomac because of the confluence of Federal Govt, Embassies, the Pentagon .... but I do believe they have stringent requirements to fly in the corridor.
It wasn't. Civilian and military aircraft operated in "civilian" airspace (although there is no such thing as civilian airspace - it's all just "airspace". However there are areas set aside for specific military training. These only constitute a fraction of total airspace).

They have exactly that. However the aircraft was configured for its landing. Going low and slow. Not a lot you can do at that point.

300 die in plane crashes, 40,000 die on car crashes. Flying is still safe.

Any one of the drunk, impaired, distracted, or other can blow your perception of safety off the road. 6 million car crashed in the U.S. Imagine all of the serious injuries in addition to the 40k deaths.

Question here is Who authorized the Helicopter to fly at 350' instead of the required 200' for this particular air space... This wasn't ONE failure that created this instance. It was a combination of things that created the Perfect Storm unfortunately.
Right. This is some of the most highly controlled and secured airspace in the world.
The helicopter was flying under See & Avoid rules. That means they had no restrictions as to altitude, and were not under full control from ATC. In addition, ATC explicitly warned this helicopter of the AA flight and directed them to pass behind. The helicopter pilot was entirely at fault here.

I'm surprised that the helicopter flying at 350 feet right across the approach path/glide slope which would also be at about 350 feet at that distance from the runway 30 threshold, is standard procedure there.

How did this happen? What was going on in the control tower? Was anyone in the control tower? If so, WHY did they not see this coming? So many questions. Will anyone be fired? Did the military helicopter, OR the plane, veer off its course and head into the other aircraft, perhaps deliberately? Again, so many questions, and so many things that need to be looked into.

A training flight does not indicate an inexperienced pilot. It simply means a planned training exercise for military readiness.
