How a small industry like malayalam takes inroads into unimaginable break through in technology and content in the world of cinema and they continue to do so....
we still going on.
malayalam is not a small industry
@@athulsuresh3152 it is small
@@VedPOP in the case of Kerala population
@@athulsuresh3152 Industry vise, we are small bro.
I remember watching the movie in Pilot theater Chennai in the 90’s. I never had the second chance to experience the first impression the movie created. The memories are still lush green. Even 2.0 didn’t have that profound impact.
Thats why kerala is always best in India 😍😍😍
That doesn't make any fukin sense
@@happybarry6190 it will if you compare it with other states
❤️🔥
Yes
I am malayali on Kerala
I saw Chota Chetan in theatre I never knew it was from a Malayalam movie, great video essay.
Inception used this rotating room technique 26 years later. Mindblown!
😀❤️
അഭിമാനം ...!!

This is how Malayalam Movie Industry is, always forward thinking.
I would make a biographical movie about how this movie was made and even that would break records. Jijo is a legend and so great is the malayalam movie industry🔥♥️
Somebody has to ... but to make this biopic .. u need atlest 20cr budget ... but it's a risk in our kerala .. beciz of the fewer no of screens ... but if u got to make it in Bollywood... and narrate the movie like a less cinematic and more of a documentary style... I think it would work ...
@@NSDude2023 it sure will.
@@NSDude2023 : VERY TRUE ANALYSIS !!!! LOLS :D
Director should have been make more movies like this. So underrated director of Indian cinemas. Love from Tamil Nadu
He's making a come back through Mohanlal's directorial debut "Barroz Guardian of D'gama's treasure"
@@A.RUclipsr sound good 😊
That same direcror did first 70 mm movie of India padayottam, and first cinemascope movie of malayalam.. And his family setuped the first film studio in kerala.. And their family is being active now.. Kunchako boban the famous actor was his family member.. Also they doing a big canvas movie barroz which is direted by mohanlal
This should be in FC page, not in FC-South
Ahem
it's an south indian Film so only
@@idontevenhaveapla7224 but only mostly south Indians may have watched it tho :/
Agreed!
Agreed , it should be in the FC page itself. There is no south indian or north indian film . It's india first 3D film . It deserves .
I cannot appreciate enough the malayalam film industry, their love for this art is unconditional and goes to many levels just to make it a reality.
One Word " DEDICATION"
Proud to have this kind of film makers and crew in India. Today's film industry are doing worship to Steven Spielberg and others of Hollywood. But the thing is we have gems. Jay Hind 🙏
Jijo is in a come back with mohanlal directorial BARROS.... Waiting .....
Oh man is that true 😀
@@akarshdas2470 oh yes
I showed this movie to my 5 year old yesterday in amazon (2D). And it was magical to see her emotions. She laughed and was mesmerised on many scenes and finally she cried when The chathan had to go in the climax.
My drunk dad refused to return the glasses after the movie and picked up a fight with the theatre attendant.
Asal malayali?
@@ranjith5704 Yes, how do you know? :)
Who won.. the drunk dad or the attendant
Same as father of the girl in the movie
Lol
This movie is a proof why my childhood was so awesome.
Keralites are well known for trying innovative means to do normal tasks in an extraordinary way. I wish to have some training from them. Kudos to every crew of the MDKC team.
The idea of Padayottam 70 MM was triggered by a spec script written by Priyadarshan, based on the Count of Monte Christo. Jijo has credited Priyan in Padayottam for it. But My Dear Kuttichatan 3D was based on a story treatment of 15 pages conceptualized and written by none other than the legend, Padmarajan but was not credited in the titles for unknown reasons. Padmarajan also never tried to make it a controversy and never tried to claim the credit. The story treatment was titled 'Pirannalu Kutti' (The birthday boy). Kuttichathan, the kids and the wonders are from this story. Pirannalu kutti was darker than kuttichathan. Jijo has upped the entertainment elements and masterfully directed an unforgetful film experience. The emotional hook and the horror created by the black magician and the tragedy of kuttichathan was conveyed so effectively. I saw the film as a kid in 1997 when it was reintroduced in cinemas with DTS 6 track sorround sound. Thanks to Navodaya and Jijo for all these wonderful contribution to the Indian cinema. I still watch Padayottam sometimes. It is so epical that it is unbelievable sometimes. It looks and sounds like Japanese epic revenge drama adventure to me and we made it here in 82. It is unbelievable. Let me add one more point to conclude this write up with a dramatic effect- I would like to inform all you fan boys that Jijo wanted to make an IMAX film back in the 80s! It didn't happen because his vision for his first IMAX film was so big that even his grand studio Navodaya couldn't support it. He even went to US several times to learn more about the IMAX format. This piece of info was from kuttichathan's writer Raghunath Paleri himself. Okay, Adios Amigos.
There is an aerial shot in padayottam, again unbelievable.
@@naushadlals Yes yes yes. I know what you're saying. Showing the transformation of Prem Nazir from the captured rebel to being the king of an island, with a voice over. It was unbelievable. Seriously man, this Jijo is a one of a kind guy.
Good news is, he’s coming back Mr Jijo! Barroz 3D, Mohanlal’s directorial venture! Under appreciated genius Mr Jijo!
😮😮.......ee info yude source/ reference undo....pirannalu kutti kittan vazhi indo
I've only recently started watching South Indians movies and have nurtured deep reverence for the approach to cinema. The level of experimentation that has been attempted in Malayalam cinema is a testament in itself. Also, my undivided appreciation to this channel which hits the right mark with its video essays and conversations, parallel to the maturity of the industry it dissects.
Imma watch more Mallu movies now!!
Now today... The same JIJO sir behind the camera...... BARROZ 3D.
I really appreciate Film companion for making this documentary which brings out the unheard stories behind My dear kuttichathan. Even though everyone has watched and read the efforts made by the entire team, it was not widely discussed as it should be.
Mohanlal 's directorial debut movie Barroz will also be using this type of sets.
Didn't realized that this film back in 80's (were Indian Cinema was still growing) used rotating sets to create scenes like Kubrick and Nolan did in their masterpieces 👏
Have seen this movie in pilot theatre in the early 90's vividly remembering the icecream coming closer to us ..
Yeah that was the highlight for us kids 😁😁😁
Yeah I too remember that
I remember watching it on tv as a little kid with my cousins and trying not let them see how scared I was at times and not to let them see me cry at that last scene. Probably the most intense cinema experience of my life.
Malayalam films are in a class of their own. Even today they produce films with the best storylines and music rivalling the standards of hollywood!
A Malayalam movie must be made about this masterpiece
Waiting for Jijo-Mohanlal combo Barroz 3D
Apachan and lijo are legends of Indian film industry, did 3d , even in an era where there is no television around.
This was my first movie to be watched in a theatre..the experience was just magical

I watched it in my childhood(1997 version). Believe me it was the best 3 d film ever watched in my entire life till today... Extra ordinary film And concept.
India's first pan Indian film ⚡⚡
Even ace director Maniratnam is an admirer of Jijo.I remember watching this movie in my childhood in 90's when it was re-released with some added scenes.I was awestruck and the climax was really heartbreaking. I believe even the re-release was great sucess.
Who all think My Dear Kuttichathan is the first pan Indian movie????
Jijo was the perfect example of 3D - Dedication Dedication Dedication. Superb. We need more of these nuggets from the past. Brought back a lot of childhood memories.
Always admired and loved chota chetan (hindi version) in my childhood.....just good to know about history around this magic..!!!!
Wow, I have never watched this film although almost all my friends in Chennai had watched. But never knew the details and what superlative innovation has gone into the making.
People now are going ga-ga about the rotating scene in Interstellar, but the one in Kutty Chattan was seriously looking so clean with literally no technology back then.
It's superb movie even if you watch in tv

The original story of Kuttichathan was written by Padmarajan and it was bought by Navodaya, according to Padmarajan's son's memoirs published in Mathrubhumi weekly, recently.

Always a step ahead ♡
Jijo is a legend.. even the iconic director sankar once mentioned why he is still number one in Indian cinema is just because Jijo have not done any movies after kuttichathan.. the gem of malayalam movie industry..
That was a great video 'Film Companion South'.
Bringing out the technical aspects and highlighting the hardships and hard work that cinematographer and producers put in, back then, to produce spotless frames and brilliant outputs, to gift such premium experience, is truly commendable!
You are creating digital archives for the next generation to discover from, the greatness of Indian Cinemas.
Looking forward to more such videos.
Simply Superb.Great to listen to the back story of something so nostalgic. 👌
Ohhh CHOTA CHETAN was remake of malayali film😲😍😍😍. Hats off JIJOO SIR👌👌👌👌👌👌
Its released in Malayalam Tamil and Hindi bro
I remember ducking when those lit up arrows just started coming out of the screen and to think it happened 22 years ago leaves me in awe!
This was like an amazing business case study. . Should be definitely used in tier 1 B schools to understand project management
The Isai Gnani Ilayaraja's music of the film was extraordinary, still, the BGM plays in my mind. I am talking about the original version, not for remake version
Super movie..I still love this movie over any other movie
I watched this movie in nearby local 70mm theatre where another blockbuster movie Ullathai Allithai on other screen, as a family, me and my cousins convinced our parents to divide and watch so they went to enjoy that and we enjoyed this. Still unforgettable ice cream, toys, bats, fire comes before our eyes and we started catching mad. And even Rajinikanth advertise for this film in a 2 min ad. 90's nostalgia never can be forget.
I'm so lucky that i watched this piece of art when i was a kid

The best 12 minutes and 29 seconds of my life! Thank you so much for putting this together.

Mr Aapachan is the owner of kishkindha theme park in Chennai
Malayalam industry is a small film industry with lot of talent. Genius actors and directors. Yes, the Malayalam films makes much much better cinemas of international standards with wonderful content ahead of any film industry. But in case of budget and box office collection it still keeping a low profile because of insufficient audience. Other wise it gonna boom boom....
Just made me so happy..
We need more of such videos. Thank you Film Companion. Well researched and well presented :)

it's the biggest box office hit of all time in malayalam cinema if you consider just ticket sales ..like the SHOLAY of malayalam cinema...by becoming blockbuster in all 4 langauges..this movie was also the first 10cr grossing Non BOLLYWOOD movie in INDIA too...even before mighty tamil and telugu cinema achieved the feat ...The biggest landmark of Malayalam Cinema and South Cinema commercially and the biggest landmark of INDIAN cinema technically....

Very good film study of an unforgettable and landmark movie in Indian cinema. This was when I first heard of a 3-D movie back in the mid-80s. Sadly, I missed watching this as a kid although it was my generation's film but remember my friends and family watching this in a local theatre in Mumbai and raving about it. Definitely a spectacular marvel and part of our pop culture.
