  • US linguist and political activist Noam Chomsky delivered the keynote "The University at Times of Crisis" as part of the international conference "Academic Freedom and Intellectual Dissent" co-organised by Scholars at Risk and ALLEA.
0:00:00 Introduction by Daniel Kaiser (ALLEA)
    0:00:41 Keynote Noam Chomsky
0:42:10 Q&A moderated by Maria Baghramian (UCD)
The speech was preceded by an address by Ireland's President Michael D. Higgins and followed by a Q & A with the public moderated by Maria Baghramian (University College Dublin).
The conference focussed on the importance of intellectual dissent and academic freedom to democratic societies in a Western, particularly European, context. The speakers and the panel discussed the scope and the limits of academic freedom in the context of political populism, neoliberalism and the exigencies of the post Covid social and educational landscape. Topics included but were not limited to
    - Academic freedom in relation to other core academic values, e.g. openness, trustworthiness, research integrity, and social responsibility
    - The scope and limits of intellectual dissent and academic freedom
    - Ways of strengthening academic freedom in a changing university funding landscape
    - The impact of social media on academic freedom
    - Lessons from a global pandemic

@Private Person How about an animatronic one? It could write a new rule for Chomsky's universal grammar once a week... that's what Chomsky seems to have done every time a researcher proved that his latest rule didn't work, either. :-)

We all would be better off to read his works and try to reflect upon the realities of the times, as he himself often comments on earlier and contemporary thinkers. The danger will be when established powers will turn him into an eternal divinity.

The intellectual honesty and poignancy of this talk is undeniable. But the sad and terrifying reality is that the American Public, to a large extent, has been so dumbed-down and desperate that they are unable and/or unwilling to understand the profound underlying TRUTH of it all! The rarefied group of intellectuals that he speaks to is only a tiny fraction of Humanity itself. Currently more than 40% of Americans believe that Donald Trump (or a Trump surrogate) is a viable solution! It is all so sad.

Thought expressed, beliefs espoused, principles upheld; all fine, but until people see them put into living, breathing action they remain dried flower arrangements. Pretty to look at dead things.
Embody them. Live them. Put them into action. See what happens. Come what may.

It's also just sad of how far Chomsky has fallen (although impressive how coherent he still is, just slow). By far the best mind the left has had in anyone's lifetime.
It's *_also_* sad that 40% of Americans think Biden "actually won".

Democracy itself is a product of free enterprise. So the lament over public funding of free enterprise is a misnomer hoisted high enough for it to catch fairwind and seem to flow with it. Social equity tradeoff issues are a natural process in sync with the times. Times, when it has turned extreme under a set of circumstances, has been brief and short and gotten freed from the excesses it sought to establish as normal. The inherent greatness of humanity has come to the rescue of mankind, thanks to free enterprise above all else.

There was a big mis-match in the volume of the moderator (too loud) and Chomsky (too quiet). But on the other hand, the quality of Chomsky's voice was excellent, because in too many RUclips videos he cannot be understood because the audio is too low and garbled. Very good talk.
