- US linguist and political activist Noam Chomsky delivered the keynote "The University at Times of Crisis" as part of the international conference "Academic Freedom and Intellectual Dissent" co-organised by Scholars at Risk and ALLEA.
0:00:00 Introduction by Daniel Kaiser (ALLEA)
0:00:41 Keynote Noam Chomsky
0:42:10 Q&A moderated by Maria Baghramian (UCD)
The speech was preceded by an address by Ireland's President Michael D. Higgins and followed by a Q & A with the public moderated by Maria Baghramian (University College Dublin).
The conference focussed on the importance of intellectual dissent and academic freedom to democratic societies in a Western, particularly European, context. The speakers and the panel discussed the scope and the limits of academic freedom in the context of political populism, neoliberalism and the exigencies of the post Covid social and educational landscape. Topics included but were not limited to
- Academic freedom in relation to other core academic values, e.g. openness, trustworthiness, research integrity, and social responsibility
- The scope and limits of intellectual dissent and academic freedom
- Ways of strengthening academic freedom in a changing university funding landscape
- The impact of social media on academic freedom
- Lessons from a global pandemic

I want to keep this man forever.
Madam Tussauds will have one.
@Private Person How about an animatronic one? It could write a new rule for Chomsky's universal grammar once a week... that's what Chomsky seems to have done every time a researcher proved that his latest rule didn't work, either. :-)
We all would be better off to read his works and try to reflect upon the realities of the times, as he himself often comments on earlier and contemporary thinkers. The danger will be when established powers will turn him into an eternal divinity.
@@Ded_Silu Why do I have to read every bullshit that a guy puts out that you or somebody else happens to like for whatever irrational reason????
The intellectual honesty and poignancy of this talk is undeniable. But the sad and terrifying reality is that the American Public, to a large extent, has been so dumbed-down and desperate that they are unable and/or unwilling to understand the profound underlying TRUTH of it all! The rarefied group of intellectuals that he speaks to is only a tiny fraction of Humanity itself. Currently more than 40% of Americans believe that Donald Trump (or a Trump surrogate) is a viable solution! It is all so sad.
40% of Republicans?
Thought expressed, beliefs espoused, principles upheld; all fine, but until people see them put into living, breathing action they remain dried flower arrangements. Pretty to look at dead things.
Embody them. Live them. Put them into action. See what happens. Come what may.
It's also just sad of how far Chomsky has fallen (although impressive how coherent he still is, just slow). By far the best mind the left has had in anyone's lifetime.
It's *_also_* sad that 40% of Americans think Biden "actually won".
Unless you count spreading disease as a skill
@@clarissamarie4605 I don't want to insult Chomsky, a truly independent mind, but what's it like blindly following such a one so lost in his dotage?
Perhaps his most important lecture for everyone interested in going forward from the 2020s ….
TL:DW- As long as our desired narrative is being pushed there should be no dissent and you have all the “freedom” you NEED.
Also, give us more of other people’s money.

Democracy itself is a product of free enterprise. So the lament over public funding of free enterprise is a misnomer hoisted high enough for it to catch fairwind and seem to flow with it. Social equity tradeoff issues are a natural process in sync with the times. Times, when it has turned extreme under a set of circumstances, has been brief and short and gotten freed from the excesses it sought to establish as normal. The inherent greatness of humanity has come to the rescue of mankind, thanks to free enterprise above all else.
@Duncan Hackett how little of sir Chomsky you assume you understand 🙏
Amazing how all this "freedom" is based upon global, enslaved labor at its root.
(...back to Professor Chomsky's presentation)
Yes!! Exactly!!
This presentation could do with some audio balancing.
@@Johnconno If they'd bothered with any editing before posting the video they could have solved it. It would have taken an extra couple of hours but it would make the viewing expeience a bit easier.
technical issue annoyed me~Chomsky too low and moderator too high on volume
Imagine a nation as intelligent as this man, otherwise our world would be not as today
ive thought about it. it would so unimaginably radically different than what it is today.
An amazing intellectual….probably the only one
Noam Chomsky is fucking awesome
human choice decentralization; God's kingdom central authority
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
100%!!!
Chomsky's calm speech punctuated by a sneeze gave me quite a start. 😶
Edit: The sound design is atrocious. Get that together asap.
There was a big mis-match in the volume of the moderator (too loud) and Chomsky (too quiet). But on the other hand, the quality of Chomsky's voice was excellent, because in too many RUclips videos he cannot be understood because the audio is too low and garbled. Very good talk.
@@awuma It's always that way. Need to edit out the other voices.
Who are these national planners?
...then,, I guess, "it" is Fate. And, why not?;The "place" is a mess. Irreducably and at terminal Velocity.
Time to act then, huh?

Noam Kaczynski has gone from being a seminal figure among critics of the establishment and imperialism to being a proponent of both these days. He's a pathetic, scared old man who has rendered himself irrelevant and should retire from social commentary.
He was never relevant to begin with.
Chomsky called Medicare for all candy. Disgusting!
Rubbish
