It was awesome, it used to help if you were stuck, without ruining the quest, unlike modern guides. Modern guides are useful for one thing, knowing what to bring in advance, saving you unnecessary trips without ruining the quest

2008 was when people STOPPED playing as the game got trash. I miss 2004/2005 when I would sit in the computer room at my elementary school and get on rusescape with the boys. I do remember playing Runescape Classic too, sleeping bags and the old skill system. I play OSRS now because it's as close to 2004/2005 as I can get. Still use a mod to make the interface old. All this Quality of Life shit really brings the mood down though.
I remember EVERY ONE OF THESE... when I first played RuneScape (back in classic) I genuinely had no idea just how early in the game's lifespan I'd arrived. I assumed it had been years old already, but no... it grew up with me.

RUclips user Bloodyzero, who uploaded the first RS video on RUclips, mentioned that clans would upload PK videos to their own forums / websites before RUclips was around. Wish there was some way of finding them. Would like to see what PKing was like in 2004 RS2.
RuneScape back in the mid 2000’s had a special charm to it. In a gaming world caught up in a graphics race, runescape offered a minimalist approach to graphics, and a focus on creating an expansive world of mind-numbing, cumulative, repetitive content that was the perfect escape to relax and unwind from real life. This was the time when everyone talked about games having good or better graphics, but they still looked more or less like crap or were at least very underwhelming. I think this is why runescape thrived in the mid 2000’s. A lot of, if not most people didn’t care about the graphics because it’s not like anything else offered anything that was very exciting in terms of graphics, and it’s not like you really gamed for the graphics back then. But then so many others were on the graphics bandwagon and made fun of runescape because it looked too 2001 for them.
Good stuff, 04-05 is when I just started so it's neat to see, by 07 I was a pmod and that stuff seems super familiar. By 09 I was making my own servers and clients, I still have some old hard drives with cache dumps and such. If there's anything specific someone is trying to find in RS history I may be able to be of some help

They are predicated on IRL communities. Community has broken down IRL, and therefore community has broken down in game. Online communities aren't some seperate entity. In insufferable person IRL will, typically, be insufferable online. It really is that simple.
I love seeing these videos of old Runescape. I remember in the fall of 2001 I was 14 and my cousin showed me the game and I was hooked instantly. Back then it was like 4 or 5 servers for the US and I think only a few thousand people playing it.

I started in 2004 and seeing these websites was a real blast from the past! I remember spending a long time just browsing the site and looking at all the art. I also appeared in the Dungeoneering-themed postbag letters, and I was a little sad when they got taken down. Thankfully, RS Wiki archived them.
I started playing in November 2003 on RuneScape Classic. This brought back so many memories of the game, playing with my older brother. Thanks for this so much.

As someone who's been playing rs since midway through classic, this is quite a trip you were right. I believe the reason they throw players in random gear in their screenshots is to preserve the fun. Before everyone got hyper efficient, it wasn't common knowledge what the hell you should take to bandos. Should've seen the shitshow of kbd in his early days. So many didn't have protection at all.

I started back in 2005. I remember because I was so excited for my first Holiday event and it was the Halloween one with the zombie head and the zombie animations. So much nostalgia with this new website, awesome upload. Web 1.0 was fantastic I wanna go back.

A lot of why runescape was so mysterious were those pictures/icons they used on the website. Everything gave so few details that I had to fill them in my head. Same with how updates released. We didn't know what was coming. All we knew was every Monday (or maybe it was Tuesday?) we'd get some new content. So that alone created a mystic. Also, the devs weren't know really at all like they are today. It kept everything feeling special. While its nice to give feedback and know whats coming, not knowing can be just as good if not better. It was sometimes more fun to theories of what was coming without knowing anything. It's also how Jagex would come out with weird pieces of content like vine sweeper or games room.
I remember buying the RuneScape Official Handbook at one of my elementary schools book fairs back in 2007ish maybe? It was one of the few books I could sit and stare at all day, day after day and never get tired of learning something new about a game that meant so much to me at the the time (after a year or so on free to play!) Man I wish I could go back to that.
Oh wow, the RuneFest 2010 siggy wall is a massive blast in the feels. Had that as my wallpaper for such a long Time. There was a wall also at the following RF, but can't remember if they made a wallpaper like that for it.
When I was a kid we were pretty poor and I couldn’t get membership at home, so I used to go to the sick bay at school when you were able to ring up for membership. I used to pretend to ring my mum but really ring jagex and member myself once a month haha.
I seen most of these websites and they were some good times. And ya they did sell the cards in the store. Bought some a long time ago. Pretty sure I got rid of it though. Along with the classic guidebook... I did keep the 3 novels they released though! Who remembers the official website version that allowed you to use credits to unlock hints and tips for quests? It was a precursor to the wiki, but felt really fun!
That's how I did quests lmfao. I didn't know you could use 3rd part guides, or that they existed. (Then I realized you could, I was fairly along in the game at that point though)

The justification for the robots.txt change is absolute rubbish - The robots standard is built on trust. If a site does not wish a page to be archived/indexed by a search engine, they request that through their robots.txt file, however the crawler themselves have to respect the request. Malicious parties are in no way stopped by a robots.txt file, and in some cases malicious parties even *prioritise* no-crawl pages, as it implies the site doesn't want people scraping it, meaning it could potentially contain sensitive information. A comparable example is the Do-Not-Track header you can send from your browser, which again *requests* that the site does not track you but in no way enforces it.

They went so hard on the game bar because they got a cut of the revenue generated from searching Google through it. (There might have been some tracking and selling of info too for all I know, the Google part was all I know for certain because a lot of different companies did it for that reason.)

As a kid I thought it was kinda funny how they put so much emphasis on it like that, but now when I look at it again it was actually smart to have that on the website's log in screen as an extra reminder to not get phished should you ever land on a fake rs site.

I don't have my original account anymore, but I do have the account I made when I was 10. I'm 24 going on 25 in September. This was so long ago. You even just reminded me that I created inuyasha based names for accounts, which I have forgotten long ago. I should try to see if I can remember those, as it will be a fresh level 3 on both games, but possibly have a 15 year vet cape.

yea we used to use the rsc hiscores to target accounts to recover in hopes of loot. There was a huge boom in 09/10 of people who were doing this. They were removed sometime in 2010.

Hell yeah, that was a gamer level strategy for completing Evil Dave's section of RFD. It would literally tell you how many of which spices to use.

these runescape archive videos are so fucking nostalgic, brings back so many memories when me and my class mates would hop on runescape after school back in like 05/06
A lot of why runescape was so mysterious were those pictures/icons they used on the website. Everything gave so few details that I had to fill them in my head. Same with how updates released. We didn't know what was coming. All we knew was every Monday (or maybe it was Tuesday?) we'd get some new content. So that alone created a mystic. Also, the devs weren't know really at all like they are today. It kept everything feeling special. While its nice to give feedback and know whats coming, not knowing can be just as good if not better. It was sometimes more fun to theories of what was coming without knowing anything. It's also how Jagex would come out with weird pieces of content like vine sweeper or games room.

I remember buying the RuneScape Official Handbook at one of my elementary schools book fairs back in 2007ish maybe? It was one of the few books I could sit and stare at all day, day after day and never get tired of learning something new about a game that meant so much to me at the the time (after a year or so on free to play!) Man I wish I could go back to that.
I've been playing since 2001 when I was 11 years old... These screens brought back instant memories it's crazy.

Oh wow, the RuneFest 2010 siggy wall is a massive blast in the feels. Had that as my wallpaper for such a long Time. There was a wall also at the following RF, but can't remember if they made a wallpaper like that for it.
When I was a kid we were pretty poor and I couldn’t get membership at home, so I used to go to the sick bay at school when you were able to ring up for membership. I used to pretend to ring my mum but really ring jagex and member myself once a month haha.
I seen most of these websites and they were some good times.
And ya they did sell the cards in the store. Bought some a long time ago. Pretty sure I got rid of it though. Along with the classic guidebook... I did keep the 3 novels they released though!
Who remembers the official website version that allowed you to use credits to unlock hints and tips for quests? It was a precursor to the wiki, but felt really fun!
That's how I did quests lmfao. I didn't know you could use 3rd part guides, or that they existed. (Then I realized you could, I was fairly along in the game at that point though)
@@FU-Utube at the time im fairly sure there wasnt much else. RuneHQ and tip.it was still unrefined and I didnt have the best guides if I recall. Or I just wasnt aware of them at the time.

The justification for the robots.txt change is absolute rubbish - The robots standard is built on trust. If a site does not wish a page to be archived/indexed by a search engine, they request that through their robots.txt file, however the crawler themselves have to respect the request. Malicious parties are in no way stopped by a robots.txt file, and in some cases malicious parties even *prioritise* no-crawl pages, as it implies the site doesn't want people scraping it, meaning it could potentially contain sensitive information.
A comparable example is the Do-Not-Track header you can send from your browser, which again *requests* that the site does not track you but in no way enforces it.

i first played RS from 2003-05 and BOOOOOOY did this takes me back. i remember those protect from melee, missile, magic prayers were something my whole class was striving for. god i miss being a kid

I haven't played runescape in years. If i had a pc, I totally think I'd give it another go. I dont really play video games much anymore, and the nostalgia seems like it would be really comfy.

They went so hard on the game bar because they got a cut of the revenue generated from searching Google through it. (There might have been some tracking and selling of info too for all I know, the Google part was all I know for certain because a lot of different companies did it for that reason.)

As a kid I thought it was kinda funny how they put so much emphasis on it like that, but now when I look at it again it was actually smart to have that on the website's log in screen as an extra reminder to not get phished should you ever land on a fake rs site.

I started playing back in 2003/2004. Thank you for showing me this video and bringing the nostalgia on. I was only 7/8 when I started playing. I don't have my original account anymore, but I do have the account I made when I was 10. I'm 24 going on 25 in September. This was so long ago. You even just reminded me that I created inuyasha based names for accounts, which I have forgotten long ago. I should try to see if I can remember those, as it will be a fresh level 3 on both games, but possibly have a 15 year vet cape.
I remember the game bar. I remember having one for Adventure Quest as well, cuz it promised premium currency if you used it. I'd forgotten game bars were even a thing

tks is a beast! you recognize their name for sure. they lost their rsn in a cleanup and someone claimed it to try and return it, but they had since quit.
I found other websites as well with old RuneScape website data. I was actually trying to find my old account in the hiscores. Unfortunately it didn’t go that far back. But I was able to find a friend’s account.

yea we used to use the rsc hiscores to target accounts to recover in hopes of loot. There was a huge boom in 09/10 of people who were doing this. They were removed sometime in 2010.
