Very interesting. Super curious to see what comes of this. I’m in MO, and malachite has always been my most favorite mineral- so this is definitely exciting. Makes sense with copper mines- but I’m curious to see how solid the specimens are vs surface level. Great find!

The big chunk of possible calcite could look amazing polished down!

Yeah man!!! Hopefully this gets going. I was out in southern Illinois yesterday… dude that’s another spot I really want to see open up. Like you can go there but I can’t share the location. It will most definitely be shut down if tons of people show up 🤷🏻‍♂️ someone more local is going to have to work on that one. The Missouri spots though that are closer I’m definitely willing to get involved. Keep us updated man. Missouri has some cool rocks and most of them are not well known. I just recently found out we have azurite! Anyway… heck yeah man just let me know what I can do to help

Some of that malachite looks like it could be polished 👍🏻 I have a piece I got from my friend Adam but it’s very crumbly. Very exciting if this is some lapidary potential

For sure, some of it is likely not malachite but chrysocola, but it’s hard to tell only from the surface. But yeah, lapidary folk should really make out well at this location, even the chert there is crazy pretty

Was wondering if the owner opened up the tailings for hounders!?! I'd love to hit this spot 💯 😍

@@PaulTCM yes, we had a very successful first year last year open to the public. We are closed until March, but check the Copper Valley Mine Facebook page for when the next digs are announced!

I'd like see what kind of chert they've got. Could have good knapping potential there. I'm in the Stl area.

For sure, even coming into the location, there’s a house being built, and where they did a little excavation you can see chert nodules everywhere in the rock. I think what will be really neat will be to see some knapped pieces with chrysocola or malachite/azurite still either staining it or fully polishable on it and part of the piece.

@@Buriedtreasurerocks That would be interesting. Let me know if you get another opportunity to go down there, I'd love to tag along if the owner's okay with it. There's always money in knapping material, trust me. I'm not sure how malachite or azurite inclusions will effect the workability of chert, but there's only one way to find out.

I am very interested in this place. Is there any way I can go there to collect some of this material? Please keep me informed of this place. I don't know any of the people or rock clubs you mentioned. I live an hour south of Chicago IL. How far is this place from Haunted Ridge? I have been there.

You bet! It is maybe an hour from Haunted Ridge, not far at all! I’ll put out more info here and on my Buried Treasure Rocks FB page when I know more!
