- Casts of current and former Broadway shows perform “Sunday” from Sunday in the Park with George to memorialize the passing of Stephen Sondheim in Times Square
I saw a comment on another tribute video to Sondheim, which completely broke me: 'Now there's another giant in the sky.' It could not be more true. Thank you Sondheim. May you rest in peace. Your debt to Oscar has been paid.
First of all, how dare you.
*sobs*
I couldn't help think of a line from Into The Woods, please forgive me if I don't get it right. "Sometimes people leave you halfway through the woods." 😭
@@celia61597 Nah, the line is correct. And he will never leave...our hearts :)
He would have loved this. He would have had notes but also tears x
He didn’t “father” children… but … here they are! (Wish I was there too)
That is, in a way, what the song Children And Art is all about
We were so lucky to have lived through his era. What a legacy he has left with us.
To quote Edwin Stanton: "“Now he belongs to the ages.”
How lucky we are to be alive when Stephen walked this Earth.
THANK YOU, NEW YORK! I love you all!
I can't stop crying . . . the tears . . . the tears . . .
Thank you Stephen Sondheim for enriching our lives BEYOND MEASURE!
His memory truly is a blessing.
This is only the smallest sliver of his legacy, contained in Times Square for this specific point in time.
The fact that this video has made it to almost 20K views without a single "dislike" speaks volumes.
God, thanks! Now I'm crying all over again. Jesus.
I think he would have loved this. RIP
Especially given Sondheim's acknowledgment that he wrote "Sunday" with an intentional funeral march quality to it... it's hard to imagine a more perfect choice for the occasion.
White. A blank page or canvas. His favorite. So many possibilities...
Three months after this soul-searing memorial, I was in New York, staying at the Renaissance Times Square Hotel, which is right around the corner from the site of this film. The morning we left, I walked to the foot of the statue, early in the morning, and played this video -- my own farewell to Steve. (I can't begin to think of him as "Mr. Sondheim".) Having seen the original Broadway production of "Sunday in the Park With George" back in 1984, I felt doubly close to him. My own private valedictory to a genius, which I will never forget.
This song. It makes me cry every time I hear it since I first heard it on Broadway. I too get very emotional on the word "Forever."
What he means to so many ... I have been crying on and off since Friday. Rest in power, Maestro Sondheim. Your legacy is eternal.
This is what theater is all about, RIP Stephen Sondheim aka the master of the American Musical.
To live to 91 and pass away while asleep.
A gracious exit.
Godspeed.
What a beautiful Tribute to such an incredible genius of a man! May his footprints and legacy remain and live on!
As great, or greater than Shakespeare. He provided the soundtrack to my entire life.
He always said it was his favorite.
On an island in the river, "Sunday" was born.
If there was any Doubt of the Lasting Legacy Stephen Sondhein left behind. Just look at all these People whom came to Honor him. Simply Beautiful !
The beauty that is Stephen Sondheim = The beauty that is New York. I feel blessed to have lived when he lived. My only regret is never meeting the genius.
What a very nice thing to do, Rest In peace Stephen
Only Broadway and NYC could do him Justice
Thank you Broadway! So beautiful.
Such an awe inspiring artist. Knocks the breath out of you every time
What a legend. 💔 Thank you for posting this!

I've been crying for the past 48 hours and this isn't helping.
For real, this is beautiful.

My God :')
Beautiful
Forever…😭
I'm not crying; you're crying,
🙏🏻😢❤️
I got it, I love it, but this is from a year ago, Nov 2019. Find the one from yesterday, and you'll see much more chaos, a much larger crowd, and an overpowering amount of emotion.
Not saying this isn't lovely, just that Sunday has been sunny more than once, and this is from another time.
What ? This matches to the one posted with lin. Also people in the audience are masked. If this was last year the actors would have been masked. ( they are all vaxed and tested 3 times a week if working) and if it was prepandemic then no one would be wearing a mask.
I was there yesterday and recorded this yesterday.
Okay. It looks a lot like the one they did at the beginning of the outbreak, with a smaller well rehearsed ensemble. This video seems to have about 80 people on the risers, where yesterday it looked like a couple of hundred.
Anyway, it's all good. Both times were about coming together and showing how performing folks do what they do. Both remind me of Mr. S.
I'm sorry he's gone, but choose to dwell on how grateful I am that he was here.
Something just broke!
Is that statue of the guy in front of the cross him?
That’s the statue of Father Duffy. He is noted for serving in the Spanish-American war and World War I and the section of Times Square is named after him.
Yeah, but Abby Mueller is hot.
