Yes me2, i'll always remember Shephard, Freeman and Calhoun. Somehow funny how they say Forget about Freeman and we will literally play as Gordon for most of the time/most of the games or atleast see him. Barney gets quite alot screentime, we see him in Blueshift, HL2 and Ep1 and he is technically in HL1. But Shephard is literally forgotten. Makes me wonder did the game developers forget that they made this charecter, i really hope we would see him in the next Half Life or atleast hear someone say Cpl. Shephard, if it will ever come.

I like to think that Shepard showed gman that he could alter events through good old fashion hard work & will power. This is why gman tells Shepard he reminds him of himself. Even though gman can alter events with much more ease than Shepard, gman was constantly "fixing" things Shepard set into motion in opposing forces. Gman noted that Shepard could be a problem in future events because of Shepards pure will power. So to neutralize the problem before it even started gman puts Shepard into stasis. Gman doesn't have any plans for Shepard he just wants him out of the way & thats why no ones heard from him since.
I'm certain when Gordon Freeman becomes a thorn in the side of the G-man with the next installment of Half Life, Corporal Shepard will be tasked with hunting him down.
It makes me think that any chance Shepard would be seen again is if he is "jailbroken" like Gordon Freeman at the end of Half-Life 2. Or if Gman lets Shepard is let loose as a distraction without supervision. Gordon is normally watched closely even when he's 'freed' and if epistle 3 is any indication, even when Freeman is let loose, he is still confined to what is destined. Shepard seems to be one of the few elements who can change predicted outcomes. This makes it ironic as Freeman who's name indicates freedom, but he can never truly be free, and Shepard whose name is to guide a certain way (for sheep) being the one who is truly free.
My only problem with this is that there were a ton of witnesses that survived black mesa, like breen, kleiner, and eli in half life 2 and nothing was done to them.
I'm pretty sure g-man is talking about race X. No one but Shepherd made it out alive to witness seeing them, so most likely G-man detained him for that reason
@@sponish0 Well, because xen was already long discovered before the Black Mesa incident, and the HECU killing everyone was bound to get word outside. Based on some of the science teams marks on not knowing what some of the Race X species were, it's possible G-man wanted to prevent their world being taken over by the combine and even being discovered by the remaining science team.

Shephard is a creation of Gearbox, not Valve. All Laidlaw has said of the events of OpFor and Blue Shift is that they are just like Schroedingers Cat. They happened until they didn't. IE Valve decides to not follow them, for whatever reason.

This reveals a lot about G Man. He's survived against all odds. That implies that he became an agent of his employers after some kind of catastrophe like Black Mesa. This is just my guess, but since he doesn't strike me as someone combat oriented like Gordon or Shephard (or Barney), he survived by cutting deals, backstabbing, and generally being sneaky. Also I'd think the power to shift through time and space as well as manipulate large objects like trams and V-22's or create pocket dimensions in the shape of them would also prove handy. There's always the possibility that his employers gave him that power though. The other part I find interesting thing is that he refers to Black Mesa as an embarrassment. That implies that he did not orchestrate the resonance cascade.
The embarrassment was probably the involvement of race x in the incident. Everyone in the world of half life is aware of the invasion of xen, but shepard was the only one left alive that knew about that another party was involved. Why would he need to keep this a secret I'm not sure.
@@demondeity9816 Here's my theory: He wanted the Combine's main focus to be on Earth, not Race X. If the scientists that studied Race X and Adrian Shepard escaped, they could tell people about Race X, and then the Combine would learn about Race X and attempt to invade it. Black Mesa being an embarrassment was talking about the fact that Race X invaded, but it seems that the nuke was able to stop their invasion of Earth. The loose ends that needed to be tied up were, well, the loose ends that needed to be tied up. Race X, other survivors, etc. He either used them for the rest of their plans, (ex. Barney Calhoun) or got them killed so they wouldn't mess up their plans. I also think that Alien Aircrafts shot down HECU and Black Ops helicopters that were escaping, not because of the G-Man just because haha.
A G-Man backstory is something that could be incredibly interesting to see but probably wouldn't be possible without losing the allure of the character.

It would be impractical to keep them awake and aware while they're kept in stasis. I'm sure that the tasks G-Man's employers entrust to people like Gordon requires them to be of sound mind, and screaming into a void for 23 years wouldn't do that. With that, I'm sure they're kept in some form of sleep until such time they're needed, given what G-Man says at the start of Half Life 2
Christ Imagine if he ever comes back. Shepperd would have been in stasis for over 20 years and would emerge from his stasis to a combine controlled earth. I can't even imagine what that would feel like knowing the world moved on without you to it's bitter end.

This is one of favorite video game endings for how unique it is - it's not directly bad, or good, but ambiguous. For how one man himself gone so far in this big picture of Half-Life lore, and have been stopped by greater forces before the worst have happened to him, and with the mystery figure of the games himself, G-man, getting a bit more open with Shepard. His bit of personal sincerity at the end feels like it's THE reward for going through these games
1:30 I love how even though this probably wasn't Laidlaw's writing (he only wrote the nuke) G-Man is still very obviously not just non-human, but a being on a strictly higher plane. To the point where he's almost frustrated with human instinct and weaknesses, which work to his chagrin.
So i'm guessing Sheppard was the "backup" if gordon happened to decline Gman's offer... which would indicate that he will only be released once and if Gordon freeman dies.
I like to think he never even got the privilege of time skipping forward like Freeman did in stasis, he literally just had to wait in real time there waiting.
I feel like the G-man will use Shepard at some point on HL3. Asuming Gordon and Eli rescue Alyx and the g-man finds himself out of options to fulfill his plans....he finally brings Shepard back.
Something tells me Valve had a different vision of G-Man back then, that's why he talks about witnesses and government property in Opposing Force and Half-Life
They absolutely did. Originally, G-Man was the administrator of Black Mesa, which is funded by the government. G-Man wasn't joking when he said Gordon's weapons are government property, because they really are. Everything in HL1 and the other expansions (especially Decay) basically confirm it. The audio script Sierra released in 99 also confirms it. Rosenberg even calls the administrator a "bureaucrat, not a scientist". Remember that Decay was made around the time where HL2 was in it's 2001 stage, so you have American cities and the Consul as plot points during that time in the beta where the Consul had no connection to Black Mesa. Calhoun's name is first used in Blue Shift, and later appeared in HL2. Kleiner is also introduced by name in Decay, and is also referenced in the PS2 manual. Gearbox clearly had notes given to them by Valve. If you play older mods like Azure Sheep, since it was also a popular fan theory, but was actually official canon that just wasn't publicly stated (think Humans being Forerunner from Halo), it's also in there too. All of this was then unfortunately retconned by Valve to be Dr. Wallace Breen instead in HL2, which don't get me wrong, Breen is a great character, but he was never originally intended to be the actual administrator of Black Mesa or even named Breen to begin with (since the Consul was an older iteration of Breen and was still called that even in 2003) until after the leak happened at the latest.. which happened in 2003. There were rewrites because of the leak after all, and that's also why the game got delayed to 2004. The references of the "Consul" (not Breen) by this time that existed in the HL2 leak are of Breen's character model, but not the name, so at this point they changed the model to match the final version, but it must have meant that shortly afterwards they renamed him from the Consul to Green, and then changed his backstory to have him be the administrator of Black Mesa... since every other major character has some connection to Black Mesa too (Barney, Eli, Kleiner, Gordon, Alyx etc.) without realising that there already WAS an administrator.. G-Man. Or they changed it up to make G-Man more mysterious. Either way, there were still no signs the Consul/Breen was connected to Black Mesa still at this point, though. It's unfortunately still a retcon at the end of the day, and Valve really did have a different vision for the G-Man originally.
I just had an interesting idea: Imagine if Corporal Adrian Shephard returns and is freed/released and awakened from his cryogenic/cryonic preservation, isolation, stasis, slumber, and incarceration, similarly much like the Doom Slayer (or Doom Guy) in DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal.
He keeps shepard as alternait option because he hired gordon when gordon falls out of line what sooner or later will happen he will use adrian it seems he is a backup in case freeman fails
Shephard is the clue for everything, he can manipulate time space with his power of Will, i hope they found him somewhere alongside ratman body, It would be perfect
"I have argued to preserve you, for a time." I think this implies G-man's employers wanted Shepard terminated for having too much powerful interfering influence in the Black Mesa incident, but G-man himself sees some use for him and just opted to put him in stasis just to get him out of the way.
My theory: G-Man not only put him in stasis to prevent any change to the future (Xen's takeover, the Combine's arrival, the Seven Hours War, etc), but he's also keeping Adrian as a _loose-end cutter._ If Gordon and Alyx fail in their mission, or turn against him, or if they get to a point they shouldn't have, then Adrian will be reassigned to finish them off.
I like to think that Race X could teleport in and teleport Shepard out some point in the future, kind of like how the vortigaunts saved Gordon from stasis
gman will come back for sheppard when freeman joins the vortigaunts in hl2. sheppard is kept in storage as a backup or contingency plan in case gman looses control over gordon.
Gman ran into trouble when the vorts rescuing alyx saw him right next to her. They locked on to him when suddenly gman entered and saw them shielding him. They never anticipated timeline bleed to occur and them entering where Gordon was located.
Tend to hink that place where he is taken is the 4th dimension so you are able to watch the 3rd dimension things but not the 4th ones (that's why you see some parts of the backgound on black). Also, you go that fast that even the light is uncapable of show but only as some light spheres. What makes me think you are just going fasters to the future.
There are no pilots, G-Man is definitely not human (just in the way how he speaks tells us that he's not used to having a human body, in other words, lungs), he can create pocket dimensions and even control the flow of time as seen in HL:A. Whatever are his intentions with Shepherd is yet to be seen.

Xen is used as a dimensional hub. You must travel through Xen to port between dimensions. The G-Man deposits Shephard in a stasis dimension not unlike the one Gordon Freeman resides in. In Half-Life 2, Dr. Mossman explains that Xen can be bypassed by using it as a 'dimensional slingshot,' and I have no idea what this means.
*HECU* and *Universal Union* weren't intrested in *Xen* and the whole "took over" thing in it is just a messed up Earth skybox - it supposed to be the desert, but they left it like this (so it seems that the original idea was about Gordo and GMan returning back to Earth from Xen, weird right, or rather... scenic? Because it's a videogame?). And Adrian was dragged across dimensions because 1) that looked cool and 2) apparently this game has a deep lore and you need to access some part of Xen to enter something else, in Adry's case it's this void, in Freeman's it's something like that only with more cool effects of lights being warped through space and time and speed and so on.

I think the reason why Adrian Shepherd was hired by the G-Man if Alex is to replace Gordon I think Adrian Shepherd was to get rid of Gordon cuz the G-Man knows that Gordon will be a problem so he hired Adrian Shepherd to get rid of Gordon so I think and half life three Adrian Shepherd will be a repeating antagonist trying to hunt the Freeman
Well it's clear that GMAN can't touch Gordon because the The vortegons are protecting him somehow that's why he couldn't do anything to Gordon in episode one episode two and he knows that Gordon is coming from Alyex so he has to find other means to dispose of Gordon adequately and Adrian just sit in the void I'd say that the useful asset a very trained soldier who can take out Gordon and plus it would be an interesting story beat a conclusion to Adrian story and a interesting gameplay aspect imagine Golden having to go against Adrian and his opposing Force
He was not hired, merely "preserved for a time", not because Employers wanted a new employee, but only because G-Man had a personal "fascination with him". Most probably Shepherd was put into stasis for some time and then discarded. A neat way of neutralizing a non-canonical character.

This is one of favorite video game endings for how unique it is - it's not directly bad, or good, but ambiguous. For how one man himself gone so far in this big picture of Half-Life lore, and have been stopped by greater forces before the worst have happened to him, and with the mystery figure of the games himself, G-man, getting a bit more open with Shepard. His bit of personal sincerity at the end feels like it's THE reward for going through these games
Imagine instead of a Half life 3 we just get another story with Shepherd.

1:30 I love how even though this probably wasn't Laidlaw's writing (he only wrote the nuke) G-Man is still very obviously not just non-human, but a being on a strictly higher plane. To the point where he's almost frustrated with human instinct and weaknesses, which work to his chagrin.

Honestly pretty creative way to remove a character from the franchise but still leaves the chance to potentially reuse in the future
i just noticed when the nuke goes off Gman then teleports to Xen so they stay out of harms way before the blast reached them
So i'm guessing Sheppard was the "backup" if gordon happened to decline Gman's offer... which would indicate that he will only be released once and if Gordon freeman dies.
or if gordon betrays G-MAN.
I like to think he never even got the privilege of time skipping forward like Freeman did in stasis, he literally just had to wait in real time there waiting.

I feel like the G-man will use Shepard at some point on HL3. Asuming Gordon and Eli rescue Alyx and the g-man finds himself out of options to fulfill his plans....he finally brings Shepard back.

They absolutely did. Originally, G-Man was the administrator of Black Mesa, which is funded by the government. G-Man wasn't joking when he said Gordon's weapons are government property, because they really are. Everything in HL1 and the other expansions (especially Decay) basically confirm it. The audio script Sierra released in 99 also confirms it. Rosenberg even calls the administrator a "bureaucrat, not a scientist". Remember that Decay was made around the time where HL2 was in it's 2001 stage, so you have American cities and the Consul as plot points during that time in the beta where the Consul had no connection to Black Mesa. Calhoun's name is first used in Blue Shift, and later appeared in HL2. Kleiner is also introduced by name in Decay, and is also referenced in the PS2 manual. Gearbox clearly had notes given to them by Valve. If you play older mods like Azure Sheep, since it was also a popular fan theory, but was actually official canon that just wasn't publicly stated (think Humans being Forerunner from Halo), it's also in there too.
All of this was then unfortunately retconned by Valve to be Dr. Wallace Breen instead in HL2, which don't get me wrong, Breen is a great character, but he was never originally intended to be the actual administrator of Black Mesa or even named Breen to begin with (since the Consul was an older iteration of Breen and was still called that even in 2003) until after the leak happened at the latest.. which happened in 2003. There were rewrites because of the leak after all, and that's also why the game got delayed to 2004. The references of the "Consul" (not Breen) by this time that existed in the HL2 leak are of Breen's character model, but not the name, so at this point they changed the model to match the final version, but it must have meant that shortly afterwards they renamed him from the Consul to Green, and then changed his backstory to have him be the administrator of Black Mesa... since every other major character has some connection to Black Mesa too (Barney, Eli, Kleiner, Gordon, Alyx etc.) without realising that there already WAS an administrator.. G-Man. Or they changed it up to make G-Man more mysterious. Either way, there were still no signs the Consul/Breen was connected to Black Mesa still at this point, though. It's unfortunately still a retcon at the end of the day, and Valve really did have a different vision for the G-Man originally.

I just had an interesting idea: Imagine if Corporal Adrian Shephard returns and is freed/released and awakened from his cryogenic/cryonic preservation, isolation, stasis, slumber, and incarceration, similarly much like the Doom Slayer (or Doom Guy) in DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal.

I think this implies G-man's employers wanted Shepard terminated for having too much powerful interfering influence in the Black Mesa incident, but G-man himself sees some use for him and just opted to put him in stasis just to get him out of the way.

My theory:
G-Man not only put him in stasis to prevent any change to the future (Xen's takeover, the Combine's arrival, the Seven Hours War, etc), but he's also keeping Adrian as a _loose-end cutter._ If Gordon and Alyx fail in their mission, or turn against him, or if they get to a point they shouldn't have, then Adrian will be reassigned to finish them off.

I like to think that Race X could teleport in and teleport Shepard out some point in the future, kind of like how the vortigaunts saved Gordon from stasis
He got the easiest yet the most depressing fate there. Stuck in there completely forgotten, probably even by the Gman.
I guess out of all the HL protags Barney is the only one that got a somewhat happy ending.

sheppard is kept in storage as a backup or contingency plan in case gman looses control over gordon.
Gman ran into trouble when the vorts rescuing alyx saw him right next to her. They locked on to him when suddenly gman entered and saw them shielding him. They never anticipated timeline bleed to occur and them entering where Gordon was located.

Tend to hink that place where he is taken is the 4th dimension so you are able to watch the 3rd dimension things but not the 4th ones (that's why you see some parts of the backgound on black). Also, you go that fast that even the light is uncapable of show but only as some light spheres. What makes me think you are just going fasters to the future.

There are no pilots, G-Man is definitely not human (just in the way how he speaks tells us that he's not used to having a human body, in other words, lungs), he can create pocket dimensions and even control the flow of time as seen in HL:A. Whatever are his intentions with Shepherd is yet to be seen.

Xen is used as a dimensional hub. You must travel through Xen to port between dimensions. The G-Man deposits Shephard in a stasis dimension not unlike the one Gordon Freeman resides in. In Half-Life 2, Dr. Mossman explains that Xen can be bypassed by using it as a 'dimensional slingshot,' and I have no idea what this means.

*HECU* and *Universal Union* weren't intrested in *Xen* and the whole "took over" thing in it is just a messed up Earth skybox - it supposed to be the desert, but they left it like this (so it seems that the original idea was about Gordo and GMan returning back to Earth from Xen, weird right, or rather... scenic? Because it's a videogame?). And Adrian was dragged across dimensions because 1) that looked cool and 2) apparently this game has a deep lore and you need to access some part of Xen to enter something else, in Adry's case it's this void, in Freeman's it's something like that only with more cool effects of lights being warped through space and time and speed and so on.

I think the reason why Adrian Shepherd was hired by the G-Man if Alex is to replace Gordon I think Adrian Shepherd was to get rid of Gordon cuz the G-Man knows that Gordon will be a problem so he hired Adrian Shepherd to get rid of Gordon so I think and half life three Adrian Shepherd will be a repeating antagonist trying to hunt the Freeman

Well it's clear that GMAN can't touch Gordon because the The vortegons are protecting him somehow that's why he couldn't do anything to Gordon in episode one episode two and he knows that Gordon is coming from Alyex so he has to find other means to dispose of Gordon adequately and Adrian just sit in the void I'd say that the useful asset a very trained soldier who can take out Gordon and plus it would be an interesting story beat a conclusion to Adrian story and a interesting gameplay aspect imagine Golden having to go against Adrian and his opposing Force
He was not hired, merely "preserved for a time", not because Employers wanted a new employee, but only because G-Man had a personal "fascination with him". Most probably Shepherd was put into stasis for some time and then discarded. A neat way of neutralizing a non-canonical character.
