In my opinion, regardless of who ended the engagement or why, the ring should be given back. An engagement ring is symbol of an impending lifelong commitment, but once that commitment is broken, keeping it would only serve as a reminder of that broken commitment and/or relationship (I doubt they would continue dating after that).
