Phil wrote this song and when he took it to his publisher he told Phil to run not walk to the nearest trash can and throw it away. What a wonderful song that has meant a lot to a lot of people. Sure glad he did not throw it away!
The beauty and the ugliness of Jesus on the cross bearing the world’s sin {each one of us} is what makes this song so beautifully touching, as well as, gripping the heart. I came across this song just yesterday again in my music & was singing it to myself & unto Jesus. It’s an older song song but the words are so true!!!
I often wonder what happened to Mr.Johnson. I remember he did the background vocals on the song called When The Time Comes sung by Sandi Patty on her 1981 Love Overflowing project. That song and The Day He Wore My Crown are so beautiful. After he did the backing vocals on Sandi Patty's album I didn't hear much about him anymore, but I am glad he is still singing for God. God Bless - Jason.
I had Phil's solo album in high school back in the late 1970's and just about wore it out. Really wish I could find the CD or even mp4 downloads. Same with the early Tim Shepperd and Dallas Holm recordings. I'm looking for all of their sheet music as well. Never thought to hang on to my CCM songbooks from those days.
What a beautiful song! I have always loved this gorgeous piece of music. It is my favorite contemporary gospel song bar none! I just found this version last night! Jack Pot! Thank you Jesus for this gifted talented composer, writer; and amazing vocalist! A heart tigger for sure!
The city was Jerusalem The time was long ago The people called him Jesus The crime was the love He showed And I'm the one to blame I caused all the pain He gave Himself the day He wore my crown He brought me love that only He could give I brought Him cause to cry And though He taught me how to live I taught Him how to die And I'm the one to blame I caused all the pain He gave Himself the day He wore my crown He could have called His holy Father and said "Take Me away! Please, take Me away!" He could have said "I'm not guilty And I'm not going to stay I'm not gonna pay" But He walked right through the gate And then on up the hill And as He fell beneath the weight He cried, He cried "Father, not My will" And I'm the one to blame I caused all His pain He gave Himself the day He wore my crown And I'm the one to blame I caused all His pain He gave Himself The day He wore my crown
I think there may be some mistakes in your lyrics. It should say, “And though He taught me how to live, I stood and watched him die.”Also only one “He cried”, Father… (at least based on the sheet music I have.
One of the most powerful songs that was ever written about our Savior, God Bless Phil
My sister sings this and Jesus for sure wrote this for her to sing. Thank you Jesus for such a gift as this. And for wearing MY crown

It sounds like his publisher needs Jesus!
I don't know how there was a Dry Eye in the studio. I've listen to this 20-30 times and cry every time.
I love this Cantata. Our choir is singing it this Easter!

The city was Jerusalem
The time was long ago
The people called him Jesus
The crime was the love He showed
And I'm the one to blame
I caused all the pain
He gave Himself the day He wore my crown
He brought me love that only He could give
I brought Him cause to cry
And though He taught me how to live
I taught Him how to die
And I'm the one to blame
I caused all the pain
He gave Himself the day He wore my crown
He could have called His holy Father and said
"Take Me away! Please, take Me away!"
He could have said "I'm not guilty
And I'm not going to stay
I'm not gonna pay"
But He walked right through the gate
And then on up the hill
And as He fell beneath the weight
He cried, He cried "Father, not My will"
And I'm the one to blame
I caused all His pain
He gave Himself the day He wore my crown
And I'm the one to blame
I caused all His pain
He gave Himself
The day He wore my crown
