    Brian even thought your on an IFR Flight Plan, unless you're IMC the PF should have his/hers eyes outside. ATC can miss a VFR aircraft with no call out (I have 4 Years as an ATC). It's incumbent upon all pilots not to keep their eyes inside unless in IMC. If you look at the tape the NPF (Christian) has his eyes inside a good deal of time.

      Chill out bro they have the TCAS.

    • @110knotscfii
      @110knotscfii 7 лет назад +2

      TCAS isn't perfect and doesn't detect aircraft without transponders. Legally (in the US) we have to LOOK.

    • @TomCook1993
      @TomCook1993 7 лет назад

      Mike Bennett false. That's not how TCAS works. TCAS is a radar. It has nothing to do with transponders or ADSB.

    • @110knots11
      @110knots11 7 лет назад +1

      TomCook1993 edit. No onboard radar. TCAS utilizes a mode S transponder and integrates other transponders in the area. According to the below FAA AC, TCAS I and II DOES NOT provide protection against traffic that does not have an operating transponder. The AC also defines other important limitations of TCAS. It's a good read. Check it out.

      They're operating inside the Class B surface area therefore legally all traffic must have a Mode C transponder.
      Of course there's those possible but unlikely drones that've been in and around the Class B there in SoCal.

    Hey Capt. Have you FO (flying pilot) keep her eyes out the window. During the entire takeoff her eyes are glued inside. They should be outside. You're flying in dense LA Class B airspace with lots of GA aircraft flying right over your head in the VFR corridor.

    • @toastno6
      @toastno6 7 лет назад +9

      Yeah, sorry, her eyes are exactly where they're supposed to be: monitoring the instruments of a high performance aircraft in congested airspace where an altitude or course deviation could be very significant. Her eyes are outside during the roll and rotation but it's impossible to accurately fly this aircraft by outside reference alone. It's far more important that she doesn't stray into one of those VFR corridors because she wasn't paying sufficient attention to the instruments The PNF during takeoff is monitoring the EICAS and flight instruments (during the initial climbout as well) in order to check the health of the systems. It may look as if they're not doing much but there is an enormous amount going on in the first two or three minutes of the flight. This is slightly different in class D or C airspace because we're aware of the fact that at smaller airfields and in the lower categories of airspace there's an increased risk of encountering uncontrolled aircraft. Of course we still have an obligation to see and avoid but we also have established FAA approved profiles and procedures which these two are following to a T.

    • @110knots11
      @110knots11 7 лет назад +1

      toastno6 okay. I'm starting to enjoy the comments here. While in VMC (regardless of operation) each pilot is responsible to see and avoid. TCAS and radar coverage does not catch everything. I've included an AC from the FAA outlining TCAS and it's limitations for your benefit. Eyes outside and inside. That's why you have a crew. www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/TCAS%20II%20V7.1%20Intro%20booklet.pdf

    • @110knots11
      @110knots11 7 лет назад +1

      toastno6 yes. Fly the aircraft on the DP etc, but you also need to LOOK outside. Even in bravo. I transition the New York Bravo all the time. Overhead EWR. Each pilot is instructed to "maintain visual separation" for a reason.

    • @toastno6
      @toastno6 7 лет назад

      'Of course we still have an obligation to see and avoid' - Me.
      Did I say we shouldn't ever look outside? Did I say TCAS is fool proof?
      At the risk of re-hashing my previous post:
      Arriving in class B in VMC (or class C, or D or E) or departing after the T/O flow is complete guess where most crews eyes usually are? Inside AND outside.
      That said, again, in KLAX there are complex procedures with a very high workload so one thing that pro pilots demonstrate is the ability to adapt to different environments and focus their attention as necessary. For the first minute or so from power set in heavily protected airspace with an off the ground RNAV in a highly complex aircraft the chances are your priority is going to trend towards the inside. Exclusively? No. Your priorities will shift as the threat changes. I see nothing wrong with what this crew is doing. However remember this is ONE departure in ONE video of only the first two minutes of ONE flight. Hardly a representative sample.
      You mention Newark. Good example. On the southwest flow you have Linden right there under you on departure as you make the right hand turn so guess what? I'm looking outside from wheels up as well as monitoring the aircraft. However it's a relatively simple departure in relatively unprotected airspace with a LOT of VFR traffic in and around the area, particularly on weekends. Again, priorities.
      What do you think happens in VMC when we get a TA? We continue to scan outside for the traffic. Interestingly if we get a RA we're still required to respond even if we have the traffic in sight and there doesn't appear to be a conflict. Reason being that although we might have the offending aircraft in sight there's no guarantee that that's the aircraft creating the conflict. As you say, TCAS is good but it's not perfect.
      Incidentally 'maintain visual separation' is only given after an aircraft has been called in sight. 'Each pilot' (I read that as 'every pilot') is not always instructed to maintain visual. It's not assigned as a general instruction to aircraft operating in VMC which seems to be what you're implying. I'm guessing that wasn't your intent.
      I guess my biggest beef with all of this is that people are passing judgement on a professional flight crew based on a single video containing two minutes of flight time out of one of the busiest airports in the world and trying to teach them basic airmanship. I'm betting they know all about see and avoid.
      Then again Monday morning quarterbacking is what you get if you post on YT so caveat emptor I suppose.
      You know something else they know? How TCAS works, but thanks for the AC ;)

    • @110knots11
      @110knots11 7 лет назад +1

      toastno6 it sounds like you have a full understanding of the value and intent of the see and avoid rule. I'm not doubting you. I am, on the other hand, making a comment about the FO on this flight. This doesn't mean that she doesn't look outside during every departure. Just this one. Heck. We can beat the crap out of me on some of my videos from years ago (I shake my head at some of the dumb stuff I've done). My original comment was just that TCAS has its limits and that we (no matter what we fly) shouldn't rely on it as the sole means of avoiding traffic.
