A woman facing her man’s crush on the nanny; fights for her man with grace and class; and, losing him, steps away with grace and class. Eleanor Parker played her beautifully.
You know, I always felt a little bit sorry for Baroness Schraeder. She really wasn't a bad lady, just a very old-school noblewoman who wasn't great with the kids since she was unaccustomed to having kids around. She took Georg ending their engagement really well, and I give her props for that. I always hoped she found her soulmate since the first time I watched this movie as a little kid.
I believe so too. She is quite misunderstood especially from those who watch with the perspective of modern mind. She is definitely a victim of that time who yearns for a steady independent life when the society doesn't allow so. She would be much happier if she was born in our period where woman can be financially independent.
I agree. I’ve always felt really bad for her because she truly was in love with Georg and she did have a good heart deep down inside. You could tell she was heartbroken trying not to cry during this farewell scene but she handled the situation with such grace and dignity. I really hope she did find her soulmate as well ❤
Hold on! When she recognized Maria was a threat, she said nasty things that impelled Maria to flee to the convent. Only when it became obvious the Captain was going to break up with her and her plan had failed to chase Maria away, did she admit defeat. It was the only way she could salvage her dignity.
The Captain does the right thing here in a situation like this. He doesn’t go outside to meet Maria and cheat on the Baroness with her. He ends things with the Baroness first and THEN goes to Maria. Everyone take note. Cheating is not the way when you’re with someone but realize you love someone else. Do what the Captain does.
@@DramaTVFan I’ve seen her films in the forties and fifties. She was impossibly beautiful. It’s not often Errol Flynn has anyone better looking than him in a film, but he always did when he was on the same screen as Eleanor.
@@bearcattony00 Exactly. I’ve always felt bad for Elsa because she wasn’t the villain of the movie. Just that one character that you can’t help but root for as you get older ❤
The Baroness only had money to offer him and she didn’t know how to show the children love but the Captain fell in love with Maria because his children fell in love with her and the children are the only thing he cared for in this life.
Their breakup was mutal and both parties understood. I think it ended well. I still feel slightly bad for her but she really wasn't going to be the mother he was seeking out for his children.
Yep. Sometimes the best thing to do when you love someone and they don’t love you back is to let them go and luckily both of them understood that. I love both of them so much for that and I hope Elsa did find her soulmate in the end ❤
In was about 7 years old when I first saw this. and I still remember the scene. I only realized how good it was when I was about 14-15. Eleanor Parker slowly backing off, great acting (what did I know at 15) but I remember this so well. Please someone find the soundtrack.
Yes, I totally agree. I can’t picture this movie without Eleanor Parker. No way, it just wouldn’t be the same + I love The Baronesses character so much . #TeamBaronessForever ❤
Yes as a kid I always thought of her as a villain. I love this scene so much now, I think of it as the best breakup ever. She let him off so easy, and yet was not afraid to show how much she liked him
@@DramaTVFan Actually, I might have got that wrong - that light could be from the chandeliers in the main hall. But they did make a mistake with the front door, which has a fanlight when seen from outside, but not from the inside!
Aaarrrggg - as other's have commented, WHERE IS THE AUDIO!!! I am not a fan of musicals, in fact I would not watch Sound of Music from beginning to end. However, the classiness of the Baroness in this scene is flawless. She knew she had "lost" yet she handled it with such poise and grace. If anyone finds this scene, please post it. The other scene when the Captain and Maria are dancing in the garden - hands down the most romantic scene I have ever seen on film!!!
The Baroness was hot. Even as a young boy, I never bought that the Captain would pick the bland, simple Maria over the sexy, wealthy Baroness. As an adult, I can tell you 90% of all men would pick the Baroness over Fraulein Mari.
@@sammymonstar5358 Yep. You guys are so right. Maria and Georg had that strong chemistry together and they just really loved each other. I’m glad things worked out for them and I hope things worked out in the end for Elsa too ❤
Funny you should say that. In the commentary on the film’s blu ray, Christopher Plummer himself admitted he very nearly threw Julie over for Eleanor. He spoke very highly of Eleanor Parker.

I liked they showed us this too. Two adults who are mature enough to be honest with themselves and be happy with that. =)

Yeah. She was beautiful and elegant and deserved her own happiness.

Eleanor Parker have so much depth to this role. She should have gotten a supporting Oscar nod.
I couldn’t agree more. Not to mention that she is just beautiful 😍 couldn’t be a better baroness than her. #TeamBaronessForever ❤

Vyto16 definitely not evil. More haughty. Real baddies were herr Zeller and the nazis.
