See an excerpt from Maria Von Trapp's autobiographical book... chapter 8, entitled 'The Third Reich':
"Salzburg lies on the very edge of Austria, only a few miles from the German border. But we were such homebodies that we only heard the distant thunder-like noise that was going on across the border - how Hitler had taken over the government, how he was giving more and more daring speeches - but it all seemed so far away and so unreal. The one great hardship which befell us was the bankruptcy of the bank where my husband had invested the family fortune. The bank had failed after Hitler has closed the border, not allowing any Germans to cross over in Austria. Since Austria depended almost entirely on the tourist trade, two consecutive years with no tourists was the downfall of many people and eventually the bank. We were not as hard hit as many others because we still had our big estate and many precious objects of art and a little money.
Then it happened. We were all sitting in our library listening to the voice of Chancellor Schuschnigg bidding farewell to Austria which was giving way to force. The very next thing was the German anthem and the tremendous roar of "Heil Hitler!" It was the night of the 12th to 13th of March, 1938, a date we shall never forget. Austria was wiped off the map and incorporated into the "Third Reich."
The door of the library opened and our butler came in, went over to my husband, and said, "Captain, I have been an illegal member of the party for several years," and he showed us his swastika.
This was all so overpowering and so overwhelming that it left one numb.
The very next day going into town - what a change. From every house hung a swastika flag. People on the street greeted each other with outstretched right arm, "Heil Hitler!" and one felt absolutely like one was in a foreign country.
At first we waited for the storm to blow over. My husband did not allow the swastika around the house or the new greeting or the new anthem to ever be heard. The pressure mounted and our lives were threatened by the Nazis.
So half a year passed, and then came the moment when my husband called the family together and said, "Now we have to find out what is the will of God. Do we want to keep our material goods, our house, our estate, our friends - or do we want to keep our spiritual goods, our faith and honor? We cannot have both any longer."
Then he looked at his children and said, Listen, you can have money today and lose it tomorrow. The very same day you can start all over again, and that can happen more than once to you in your lifetime. But once you have lost your honour or your faith, then you are lost."
There was no real question what God wanted. As a family it was decided that we wanted to keep HIM. We understood that this meant was had to get out. "

(Historical Note: Maria's two oldest sons, Rupert and Werner, were drafted into the U.S. military in WWII. They chose the mountain ski troops. Both boys came home safe and sound.)
oh my.. never knew there is older version like this..
Was anyone else half expecting “She climbs a tree, and scrapes her knee” after Maria picked up the books and scuttled off? And then “I have confidence” when she left the abbey?
Never even knew about this film until now.. wow
Loved this. Thanks for putting the English subtitles up for us!
You're welcome 😊
I can't help keep coming back to rewatch this movie!!! Love it too much!!
A gem of a movie, thanks for sharing it. It is more like Maria Von Trapp's book than the Hollywood version. We enjoyed that version, but this one is a lot more real. And the music is phenomenal.
I didn’t know there was an original version! 😦 thank you for this!!
same,I always thought Julie Andrews was the original one
i believe there was also a german television movie done even before this
I like this as well or better than the Julie Andrews version. Maria has an exuberant innocence and the captain is charming. It has an authentic feel
This version is my favorite in every way.
Actors. Etc.
I've never known that garmany's one is original. What a good movie! I like it so much.
This was the movie that Rodgers & Hammerstein used as the basis for their 1959 Broadway musical starring Mary Martin,
Maria von trapp wrote a self bibliography, that is how roger and hammerstein got the musicale.
This is a wonderful love story and more - It's worth seeing again and again. Thank you!
Be it previous generation, this generation and the generationNext........a benchmark set by this movie is unlikely to be breached in the near future.
Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
I thoroughly enjoyed "The Sound of Music" with Julie Andrews, but this movie really touched my heart. Thank you so much for uploading it!
This movie is as good as The Sound Of Music played by Julie Andrew to me. Like it.
hans v.essen
This film is the 1st VERSION of All...... the Original 😊👌🏽
I cant understand. Where can I download the one with English subtitles?
@@avlyyap1741 You can use the RUclips settings to turn on English captions.
I. Thoroughly enjoyed. It really. Touched. My. Heart. Amazing. For me. No. Words. To. Say. For. Sound. Of. Music
This is absolutely SUPER!! Thank you so very much!!
Maria exits the convent with only her bag and her guitar...now we know where Robert Wise got that idea (not to mention the tolling of the bells as well).
The people who worked on this film should have been in the credits of the Hollywood film they copied it so closely!
Never knew about this movie thank-you so much
You're exactly right of course. I knew I shouldn't create the conflict, but I just couldn't resist putting it in the captions...
This version is amazing, I like it very much!
Thank you so much for posting! I've been wanting to see this since forever.
Except for the songs, The Sound of Music is pretty much a straight copy. I hope the producers of this film got a kickback from the huge profits of the American version!!
I didn't know this version of The Sound of Music even existed until now. I just viewed the British skit or play, "Dinner for one" a German favorite, recently on RUclips. Rachel Stewart from DW news made a mention of it. I found out the German version of "The Sound of Music" on Understanding Train Station with Josh and Feile, from German Girl in America podcast.
This version is the best ever. Id love to have a copy off it.
One of my favourite films❤
Now I can see the difference and similarity between German and US in translating a story into a film.
I knew of this film's existence but I had never watched it. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. Not overly sentimental or "schmaltzy" like the Sound of Music. Has some funny bits too. And holy cow, Ruth Leuwerik could pass for Deborah Kerr's identical twin sister! Gorgeous!
+youzzername I wish you could have seen the production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC that the Lyric Stage in Irving, TX did in 2013, and you might have a better impression of the show. The fact is, the way they did it, using the absolute original script and score (with a glorious orchestra of almost 40 musicians playing the original orchestrations, which also helped a lot), the show felt so much more substantial, and less sugary/schmaltzy. Of course, the movie version is a real problem in that regard, incorporating so many changes that really damage the property, so if you're going on the basis of that, just be aware that it does not do justice to the original, in so many ways. I'm looking forward to getting to watch this movie (only just started it). I'll be interested to see whether it stays more true to some of the facts that got messed with for the US musical (and I understand the reasons for fudging some of those things, for dramatic purposes).
You're right -- she does look like Deborah Kerr -- both beautiful.
wow I never knew that the Julie Andrew version was a copy
Thumbs-Up #3K-PLUS I am, Friday late afternoon 31 January 2020! I was introduced to this remarkable film this month by RUclips and slowly watched it over the past few days. Why does no one speak of this film? It is the first. It gives a very different account of your story.
Wow this is the original movie from a true story?
Wow. So cool.
Wow! I did not know about this! I am so pleasantly surprised! 🤗
ouh... 2020, i never know there’s the original til today
Learned something new today. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for uploading this and subbing the film as well!!!!!!!!!!
I enjoy this version alot!!!
thank you for the film I💜💜💜💜💜💜💗💗💞💕 it ✌👍✌👍
Ja, it is 2021 very exciting i just watching now never watch the original film ☺
Wunderschöne Filme
I love to watch this video😲😲😲
Very clever to use Schubert's 'Linden Baum' from Die Winterreise for the final song. Very moving and apt. This is not the first time that this song has been used to end an artistic work. Thomas Mann in his masterpiece 'The Magic Mountain' used it as the finale to his novel. It is the song Hans Castrop recalls as he is facing death sitting in the trenches. Mann does not tell us if he lives or dies. There is nothing like a Schubert song. Maria Von Trapp's book is better. Recommended read.
Wo kann man das Buch bestellen?
i ♡ this film so much
Amo esta pelicula😘😘👏👏👏
Thank you so much, this brings back a lot of memories from my childhood. :) Meine Oma hat das immer mit uns geschaut.
NOTE: you have to turn on the English captions at the bottom right of the screen if they don't automatically appear. If in the mobile app, tap the video, then click the three dots at the top right and "captions" will be one of the options. Select "English."
Thank you for this film, I remember when I was child, I seen with my family. But we lost the film with Spanish but thank you for subtitle in English!!! ( Salutations from Catalonia)
I have a Book of the Von Trapp Family . the name in Spanish is "Historia de la Familia Trapp de Cantores" in English "History of the Trapp Family Singers" and this book is based from the experiencies of Maria Augusta Trapp. When I stayed in Austria I visited Salzubrug and I could visited some places of the real History of this family and others places from the Julie Andrews movie. But I remember, when I was child, to seen this film in my grandmother's house but my grandmother when she changed the house she forget where she put this film and I really sad for this fact because I love it this film and today, thank you for you, I can see again this film. ¡¡¡¡Thank you!!!!!!
Dear Von Trapp Family, I want to say Thank You Very Much for letting me and the others know how to get the English subtitles for this film. This is because just know i was wondering how come there is no English captions are showing underneath while it's saying it's a movie with English subtitles until i came across the note of yours with the answer. Thank you again.
TheVonTrappFamily Btw. just wanted to say that the English translation is really good. Bravo for all of your hard work!
thanks!
The Hollywood version is practically a copy of this . They have just add the music score in
Thank you ever so much. I have ALWAYS wanted to see this and now thanks to you I can. Will you be doing captions for Die Trapp Familie in Amerika too? Thank you, truly
I like this movie 👍👍👍
diese wunderschoenen deutschen lieder, gerade jetzt zur weihnachtszeit,da kommen die traenen sehr leicht. ich ging auch zu einer klosterschule und lernten dort viele von den liedern die in den film gesungen wurden.
I tear up - even while fixing up the captions. It is a very hearty movie.
And I'm a guy!
This is the best.
Awesome! Unmissable !
Danke schon
i love this movie
Love this film.
Thank you for this movie! My German is very elementary, so the subtitles were helpful indeed. I've enjoyed this version more than the Hollywood extravaganza, I must say!
Das waren noch Filme damals humor schauspielerisches können alles passt in dem Film
Thank you!!!
I find your English 'cc' to be VERY accurate! The similarities and differences between the 1956 and 1965 versions are extremely interesting. 1965, of course, centered around the Rodgers & Hammerstein soundtrack. So I can see why much of the original story-line had to be sacrificed, e.g. going broke, the priest choir leader, emigrating to America. But I do believe that Robert Wise remained essentially true to the Wolfgang Reinhardt production. NICE JOB with this playlist...danke schoen!!
I haven't seen this movie but I remember watching the anime and its sliding down the stair banisters scene.
Great job on the subtitles. I attempted a translation about 2 years ago, but I like yours better. It took me a few weeks to finish the translation because my German isn't that great, and it's my first language by the way. I had to constantly look up words in the dictionary. I also had help from a fluent German speaker which helped a lot. Have you seen Die Trapp Familie in Amerika? It's the sequel.
There's an English version released in 1961 that condenses the two movies. I haven't seen it since its first release.
AP Terhune I purchased it, but the voice-overs are terrible compared to the voices of the original actors. It doesn't feel like the same movie.
TheVonTrappFamily I watched a short clip of the English version here on RUclips. I also prefer the original.
TheVonTrappFamily The English version is available on RUclips, but I would have to agree, the voice-overs are not very good. Dubbing was not very advanced in those days and they probably economised in their choice of voice actors as well.
It seemed too short a time to fall in love, get married, have a baby, go bankrupt, start a hotel, win an international choir contest and be driven out of your homeland...
In real life the story spanned over many years .
Poetic license maybe ?
Well actually it was over the course of 10 years, because Maria von Trapp first came to the Von Trapp home in 1927, and married the Captain in 1928
@@crunchysocialisthippie Stories in Hollywood move much faster than real life. I was unaware that this version of "The Sound of Music" even existed until now.
Danke
I love “Sound of Music” so this is the original.. first than Julie Andrews?
This 1956 West German film "The Trapp Family" (starring Ruth Leuwerik) was the inspiration for the 1959 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical play "The Sound of Music" (starring Mary Martin) then the 1965 Twentieth Century-Fox blockbuster film of the same name (starring Julie Andrews). Cheers
I know this might be silly but is there a way to get this movie with german subtitles?
Thanks for uploading and dubbing!
Just one thing: I think at the beginning when you write "1927", it's not supposed to be 1927 in the movie. Because they never mention a ten year gap between Maria coming into the family and their participation in the competition in 1937. Also the children don't age. I think you have to assume that it's already 1936/1937 when Maria is starting her job. I know, in reality, it was 1927 when the whole thing started.
Yeah, that got me confused too. Because of the English subtitles saying 1926, but later on in the film the contest happens in 1937 while the kids did not seem to age at all.
Hola desde Argentina. Podrían subir ésta película con subtitulado en español? . Muchas gracias.
Awesome, I luv this.
I have liked and watched the later Rodgers & Hammerstein version over and over but after viewing this original version in German with English subtitles of the Trapp Familie, I much prefer this version of the Sound of Music. Just a question, is it German or Austrian? I find a lot of the words in the Afrikaans language to be similar to that which is spoken here and I find it easy to decipher.
Albert van Heerden It is mostly high German but some actors have a slight southern German and/or Austrian dialect.
Albert van Heerden Grüß Gott was the common greeting near Stuttgart where I studied.
The boatswain’s whistle was real; a big house, but it could be heard all over. The kids liked having their own call. Captain von Trapp was actually very kind to the kids. He was a heroic submarine captain in WWI. Maria was actually brought in to deal with the youngest girl, who was sick. (From an older daughter’s book)
Great 👍
I like this version. The one with English dubbed in is edited.
Awesome
Superb aus Mexiko
Who played Werner, the young Von Trapp boy who had such a high singing voice? Is he still alive and is he singing professionally? Or was he lip-syncing the whole time? I would like to think that it was his real singing voice. It was purely angelic!
Laura L. Christeson I am also fortunate to have a copy of Maria's book, which is also autographed by her.
+Laura L. Christeson His name is Michael Ande, a German TV actor. Dont know if he is still alive. After he did not sing professional.
+horstwinnetou +Laura L. Christeson Michael Ande is alive, but he is now 71 and probably not active any more. He played a lot of movies and television dramas from the 1950s through 1990s. Wikipedia lists his last role in 2000. I remember him best for his role of Jim Hawkins in the 1966 Franco-German television version of Treasure Island. FWIW he is not known for singing, so he might have lipsynced in the Trapp movie.
@@xaverlustig3581 I've seen him once in another German movie about a boy's choir. (No, not Almost Angels; another one.)
Actually Michael Ande was a known child actor in the 1950s and especially casted for his beautiful soprano until his voice broke. The two Trapp Family movies aren't the only ones where he was singing.
0:39 "Friedrich" and "Gretl"! 0:42 "Liesl"! 1:20 "Kurt"!
I wonder if Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse were inspired by the opening credits here to rename the kids in the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical?
01:32 "Brigitte"
Das sind typisch deutsche namen

What is the title of the music
9:04 Wir suchen Spider-Man 😄
I'm not sure. The subtitles don't seem to show through internet TV. The only way to see the subtitles is to hook up your laptop to the TV, play the RUclips video and watch it the old fashioned 'with cord' way.
The look of the film was obviously copied by both the Art Director and Cinematographer for "The Sound of Music". Can't get over how the overall color scheme and set design were ripped off from this movie for the Fox extravaganza. But wait: it's a German film about an Austrian adventure? I can't imagine that too many Austrians were happy about that!
@4:10 How do you solve a problem like Maria? Haha
Staircase part 😂😂😂😂🙈🤣🤣🤣
0:50 what is the title of the music?
Original composition by Franz Grothe.
Veel beter dan de ook (niet slechte Amerikaanse) versie.
Better if you ask me
Check the "CC" button at the bottom right of the video if they don't show automatically.
Why isn't there English subtitles

It’s such a pity that after the first episode we are left with NO subtitles !,!!, WHY
I had to stop watching. Such a shame.
