interesting thing to ask from ltt, i suppose they could cover the basics. i suspect though that if you know enough that you can connect all of those operating systems back to the constant they all have you probably already know more than a tech quickie would provide, and there are lots of resources available for getting down and dirty with unix.
Neither windows nor android is a kernel :D Windows uses the NT kernel, while android is based on the linux kernel. But I agree, a video on kernels would be interesting.
Yeah. I'm with ya. OS kernels like Linux/GNU-->Unix and so on. I never got how Unix works... just that Linux came from it with some GNU-Software. MAC is Unix like I heared... still no idea.---> Looks like a Linux to me.
suggestions: Mosfets, diodes, capacitors, chokes & more OR Wattage, amperage, voltage & perhaps ohms? OR VRM & digi+ VRM Please consider one of them :(
At the end of the day, All material design is for is to make newer devices look different from older ones without material design so people shell out the $ for a new phone or tablet...
Anton Stengel That's not why Google came up with Material Design. That's what makes people splash some cash on a new phone, which is what Google is after. They wouldn't stand as good a chance of successfully recieving that money if they didn't promote themselves as forward-thinkers. Business isn't about your feelings. It's about your $.
@Steve - I like the idea of skeuomorphism, but Material Design isn't all about the "looks." It's a design system that sets standards on typography, color, motion, layout, and so many other things that give users FAMILIAR and USABLE user experience across apps and devices. This is beneficial because you don't have to re-learn how to interact with different apps or websites. Material Design makes things consistent. The problem is that many developers and designers don't know how to implement it correctly. Material Design has changed a lot in five years since its initial release and will continue to improve because design is a never-ending process.
Microsoft did not invent flat design. Flat was invented by designers who wanted to simplify their work by creating a simple yet beautiful design. First concepts of flat design were hated and I am sure you hate it because it is still trendy to hate it. Well, the first conceptions were indeed bad, because they were slowing navigation. But flat design evolved and what we have now is designs like material design.
Can you make a video about TFT display, IPS, super amoled and the new super amoled that Samsung used in tab S. These are the main points which I'm concerned about: 1. Viewing angles 2. Color range 3. Brightness 4. Battery drain (If it's possible)
"an eclectic collection of random functionalities all bolted together and then stuck into your pocket" that is... honestly the most accurate description of android that I think I've heard from my experience lol
Interlaced is image is made of lines instead of a full image. The interlacing or combing artifacts can be seen in moving interlaced footage. Since interlaced footage is half the resolution vertically compared with progressive images it was used to lower bandwidth on old TV networks. Progressive video will always look better.
Microsoft got it right in terms of mobile OS design. Having little screen estate available, a flat, clean, chromeless and typography-based design is best, with subtle hints of motion like transitions and letter movement. I'm sure Google put a lot of work into this, however the UI is still space inefficient, prone to clutter and based on old, large screen design principles.
TheEpicMusic161 Well, okay. I like Android because there are many apps and because you can customize it a bunch. And the latest version, 5.0 Lollipop, runs very smooth on my Nexus 4, which came out two years ago.
What Linus left out is why we have design philosfies, having a set of rules that a user interface follows is the equivalent of the laws of physics in the real world. It helps the user understand how things work, if different cities had different laws of physics we would have learn how walk in each one, same in software, if all the apps work differently using one app coming from another can be hard.
***** uh, Windows flat stuff predates all of this - Google just did their own version like Apple did. However, since it isn't sourced from Apple or Google, people have strange idea's concerning "invented" and lots of other things. I guess fans only like it when their corporate deity steals from someone other than MS.
***** Thank you for the measured and calm response, as I reread my post, it is somewhat baiting. Sorry about that. Sometimes I see fanboyism where it isn;t and I response in like. Happy youtube-ing!
People don't seem to understand that this is a good thing: 1. People who want a more unified and flowing experience can have that. 2. This is android and customization is infinite, you can still have your dark UI's with tron themed animations and SAO bar.
Anyone else notice that Linus' hands are yellow? You can see it when he says "material design" in air quotes. I don't know if it's a side effect of the chroma key or his hands are just like that...
Explian please the diference aboute AMOLED and LCD and why AMOLED gets burned in after a long exposure of a static picture as in the case of the Nexus 6, adiveze people to be cairfull when they buiy phones with AMOLED display, these days it`s a common problem that`s why i`m sticking with my nexus 5 and not going for the nexus 6.
Hopefully it'll rid the web of the lazy designers who put all their info-content in flash which vision-impaired people like my friend can't read with JAWS (text-to-voice program). Also using stds like those assists browser & website-developers create product that interact consistantly. &B^{D?
I NEED HELP i just bought 3 identical 32 inch monitors all 3 monitors running same resoluition witch is 1366x 768 and a 60 hz refresh rate i have a gtx 760 all my monitors are hooked up through hdmi cables with the dvi adapters you need but nividia surround still isnt working i cant figure it out the tvs work but the dont work all together as one big picture is like having 3 desktops that i can move between each one it helps but i wanted to play bf4 on 100 inches of screen plz help if you have any ideas
I wish the colours on phones were handled in the same way that xterm handles colours, by having a specific list of colours that something is, and the user can change what actual colour they see. Like, if I want all of my teal to show up as yellow, I can. Not for everything obviously, but major UI stuff.
Lollipop was rather disappointing... It wasn't bad, but it really didn't bring anything special to the table. The only notable thing was that we lost lock-screen widgets, and I loved those.
I see. Material Desigin is easy to understand while defining what it can not do. The gui elements can grow or shrink but no pass through. It can not occupy the same space but can exist on top of each other. Oh man this is the only thing that made sense.
Looks like Google learned from Apple how to fill the minds of the developers with a bunch of nonsense.... Instead of creating a better less filled with commercial apps....
Linus... you should have started by saying that "material design" is this video will be about SOFTWARE. I was waiting through the whole video for you to say what "material design" means in the construction of the actual hardware item (that it is meant as a common standard for the electronics industry, or something like that). I got confused watching this video :(( So does this mean that "material design" is for software only?
One thing that I like with Linus/tech channels is that I almost never see those damn bots spamming virus sites about how to get free stuff. Perhaps it's mainly gaming directed, anyways this is great.
I'd like to see a new techquickie episode of AMD GPUs and CPUs and how their CPUs compare to intel. AMD's marketing again has confused the heck out of me.
How about a separate channel to supplement this; As *deep* as possible?
We need to go deeper!
bluephreakr my thoughts exactly. +1
I
OwO
yo Linus BRO!, make a video about kernels, like windows, android, etc. thanks!
interesting thing to ask from ltt, i suppose they could cover the basics. i suspect though that if you know enough that you can connect all of those operating systems back to the constant they all have you probably already know more than a tech quickie would provide, and there are lots of resources available for getting down and dirty with unix.
kght222 well, he asked for suggestions so that's what i did.
MiKE fair enough, doesn't have to be for you =P
Neither windows nor android is a kernel :D Windows uses the NT kernel, while android is based on the linux kernel. But I agree, a video on kernels would be interesting.

actually "material design" makes me think more of cad and engineering than fashion.
It's more about cad and engineering than fashion.
Functionality > Design
suggestions:
Mosfets, diodes, capacitors, chokes & more
OR
Wattage, amperage, voltage & perhaps ohms?
OR
VRM & digi+ VRM
Please consider one of them :(
...I read that as "Mosfets, dildoes..."
***** lol me too
Wattage, amps, voltage and resistance is basic physics...
L3ON360Z thanks for your valuable input....it was just a suggestion. I don't know why you have the urge to make such a comment
At the end of the day, All material design is for is to make newer devices look different from older ones without material design so people shell out the $ for a new phone or tablet...
Yes, that's pretty much how post-fordism works and how companies make money....
Or its because the majority thinks it looks better and it is more logical and more modern...
Anton Stengel
That's not why Google came up with Material Design. That's what makes people splash some cash on a new phone, which is what Google is after. They wouldn't stand as good a chance of successfully recieving that money if they didn't promote themselves as forward-thinkers.
Business isn't about your feelings. It's about your $.
Michel van Briemen This is not Apple, you can have the latest android on pretty much any device if you flash it with a 3rd party room.
Aleksandr Kamarov On the contrary, a far greater percentage of iOS devices run on the latest version as compared to android.
You have pretty yellow hands
it has been six years and material design keep on evolving, very nice
@Steve - any other suggestions?
@Steve - I like the idea of skeuomorphism, but Material Design isn't all about the "looks."

Material Design has changed a lot in five years since its initial release and will continue to improve because design is a never-ending process.
Microsoft invented flat design in the late 80's for Windows 2.0. Look how far we've "progressed".
Flat design is cheap and sucks.
DeeJayBanana they are changing to fluid design
Microsoft did not invent flat design. Flat was invented by designers who wanted to simplify their work by creating a simple yet beautiful design. First concepts of flat design were hated and I am sure you hate it because it is still trendy to hate it. Well, the first conceptions were indeed bad, because they were slowing navigation. Hey Linus, I can't wait for the material design overall for the LTT forum!!
Malcolm, Ra's is looking for you
Can you make a video about TFT display, IPS, super amoled and the new super amoled that Samsung used in tab S.
These are the main points which I'm concerned about:
1. Viewing angles
2. Color range
3. Brightness
4. Battery drain (If it's possible)
Why don't you make a series of videos on Material Design on either this or Linus Tech Tips channels?
This was great. I had no idea what Material Design was, and I had just watched a video about it. Thanks!
Seems like Material design has grown to include many web and mobile sites or apps.
It does look almost like it is a language all it's own/
"an eclectic collection of random functionalities all bolted together and then stuck into your pocket"
that is... honestly the most accurate description of android that I think I've heard from my experience
lol
Progressive vs Interlaced - as Fast As Possible!
Interlaced is image is made of lines instead of a full image. The interlacing or combing artifacts can be seen in moving interlaced footage. Since interlaced footage is half the resolution vertically compared with progressive images it was used to lower bandwidth on old TV networks. Progressive video will always look better.
I miss the dark holo non bullshit theme of jelly bean. material design makes it flat and older devices run slower.
this video has 301 views 1 dislike 100 likes so 301-1 = 300 and 300/100 = 3 half life 3 confirmed.
your calculation is now as useless as those dislikers.
Is this the Google 'Material Design Spec Sheet'....? (material.io/)
Things have changed since this video was made and that is indeed the new site.
TL;DR White backgrounds, minimalist icons, and lots of drop shadows.
FUCK FLAT DESING AND MATERIAL DESIGN! Realistic skeuomorph FOR LIFE!
wish you guys did more smartphone abs tablet reviews!

Microsoft did it right? Not using up too much screen space?
* cough cough* Windows 8 * cough cough *
***** hftyj?
InfinityCraftLP he's talking about on mobile and windows 8 on mobile is fantastic it just doesn't have many apps.
TheEpicMusic161 Well, okay.
I like Android because there are many apps and because you can customize it a bunch.
And the latest version, 5.0 Lollipop, runs very smooth on my Nexus 4, which came out two years ago.
The Joker Well, Windows doesn't always feel like butter. MacOS also has a lot of animation and overall seems very smooth, but I prefer Windows.
Do the video about Microsoft's new design system called "Fluent Design".
cant u just add a quicklink to google material design specsheet for users. it ll be much apperciated. thanks
I already know a lot of the topics that are often covered on this channel but I seem to watch it anyways just because Linus is in them. O.o
I'm going to take a guess that Edzel is a fan of Material Design considering how it's been used in some of the LinusTechTips videos and sponsor clips.
Teleprompers as Fast as Possible.
This would be great, in my opinion.
What Linus left out is why we have design philosfies, having a set of rules that a user interface follows is the equivalent of the laws of physics in the real world. LMG History as fast as possible
+Tyler Louton History is the study of the past................ Simple
This video was more informative than all videos on the subject by Google Design combined.
Linus, please dedicate a video on explaining Glare vs. Anti-Glare, maybe even Matte screens for laptops.
so its corporate gibberish, got it
This updated SwiftKey keyboard pops up fast!
Almost all the comments I read over here are from 5 years ago!
How about Gaming terms, or something fun
this is why ios 7 theme, copy of Windows' Flat design. are irrelevant compare to this invention, Material Design.
***** uh, Windows flat stuff predates all of this - Google just did their own version like Apple did. However, since it isn't sourced from Apple or Google, people have strange idea's concerning "invented" and lots of other things.

BINARYGOD Material design is small animations/transitions. Flat design is different. Yes apple copied it and Google did also.
*****
Thank you for the measured and calm response, as I reread my post, it is somewhat baiting. Sorry about that. Sometimes I see fanboyism where it isn;t and I response in like. Happy youtube-ing!
BINARYGOD well the worst fanboies are Samsung ones and Apple ones.
***** What? Windows = Metro, Apple = Flat
People don't seem to understand that this is a good thing:

2. This is android and customization is infinite, you can still have your dark UI's with tron themed animations and SAO bar.
He is gay. That no big deal. Just a fact.
nu3DN i dunno, i have straight friends that act and talk like him :-??
SuperClau They are gays too :ь
he has a wife...
he has a wife and kids.
Do as Fast As Possible steam workshop
lol no need
So it's basically a flat design rip-off
Anyone else notice that Linus' hands are yellow? You can see it when he says "material design" in air quotes. I don't know if it's a side effect of the chroma key or his hands are just like that...
Can I use Inkscape to make a flat-material design GUI? I don't want to download Adobe (bloatware) art software. Adobe has a lot of bloat.

This episode just confused me.. =(

Not for everything obviously, but major UI stuff.
I personally don't like material design, which is why I have not updated my Slimkat rom to lollipop.
Can we have a techquickie based on SSH, FTP, SCP and VNC.?
Lollipop was rather disappointing... It wasn't bad, but it really didn't bring anything special to the table.
The only notable thing was that we lost lock-screen widgets, and I loved those.
THIS is how you persuade clients... holy f......un! :D
0:06 "5.0 lollipop"... oh that's cute
Sorry, but what would I say? This strange bug with restless legs/arms tired me completely. [Hyperkinetic specimen] :-))
shame can't dislike more than once
in a world where google weren't complete tossers they would call this graphic design
Android 5.0 is honestly the best OS, I hope another company doesn't try to copy it later on if you know what I'm saying.
I am trying to make a wallpaper for my phone which is running lollipop. This video helped me get the info I needed to proceed. Thanks!
Not just for app design! Polymer is Google's web framework for material design! I use it for my portfolio design on my website!
But when will we get the Material Dark theme? Why google? Why you make everything white?
Is that the new cover for unemployed hipsters? Or a new way to distract from broken products like youtube....
Please visit and register in our site @ www.createpad.me I will be very glad to meet you there, Thanks for registering bro/sis.
I generally like as fast as possible... But not this. Didn't understand whatever you said. I say nothing!!!!!!
Useless episode! You must consider an episode on SSD controllers and stuff> you haven't yet done any episode on that topic
if android went from holo design to material design, then I wonder what will come after material design once it reached it's full potential.
make a video about keychains so my life goal can be completed
Thanks for the sustained air quotes. "Material design" is five syllables too pretentious for theme.
Umm, you probably shouldn't of showed your RUclips Studio on your phone it shows your "Est. Earnings"
*edit* why did this just show up in my sub feed?
Linus... you should have started by saying that "material design" is this video will be about SOFTWARE. I was waiting through the whole video for you to say what "material design" means in the construction of the actual hardware item (that it is meant as a common standard for the electronics industry, or something like that). I got confused watching this video :((
So does this mean that "material design" is for software only?
in this instant, yes it has nothing to do with hardware, it's just Googles new design philosophy for android software.
Can someone explain to me what 1dp means? He says it's not 1 pixel but I don't know what it is.
aww Linus is finally growing his horns ( look at his hair :D)
Linus, can you make a video about Linux? I know a little bit about it but I would like you to explain it.
Am i the only one to notice Linus throwin out a massive spitball at 2:17 !!! holy shit that was giganstrous!
One thing that I like with Linus/tech channels is that I almost never see those damn bots spamming virus sites about how to get free stuff.
Perhaps it's mainly gaming directed, anyways this is great.
so pretty much Apple's theory? well i like it, better than a chaotic environment.
So it's almost like the snowflake thing RUclips did Philosophy-wise?
what Phone are you using anyways? u take a different one out of ur pocket every video! haha
I still don't get it is Material Design an API for Android developers from Google ?
After watching this, I am still none the wiser as to what Material Design really is :/
Material Design was not created by Google. It's been around for a while.
what a hell you are talking about..? :D
You are great, Linus!
I don't know if the Linus name is responsible for great achievements and content :)
#Linus_torvalds #Linus_your_name
The who ever has to chroma key your video probably hates when your hair is spikey.
Hey when is gmail and google calendar going to get the material design for desktop?
It feels like I want more. Make a real video on your main channel please.
I would like to see NFC as fast as possible if he already hasn't done one
Finally someone who defined material design in concice terms instead of nebulous "hipster design speak". Now I know where to go from here.
Looks awful and still takes much more RAM than Windows Phone.
why this video is default 1.5x faster? can any one help me out
I thought buttons were made of plastic and metal. 😏
Never really liked this style....
Please make a video of 2.4GHz VS 5GHz and explain the differences in it's technology :)
Just letting you know my feelings were more complicated than this
How can there be 301 views if there are only 26 people on earth
Miguel Chavez ...but why?
I still have no idea what this is...
did i hear someone laugh behind the camera around @4:00
I'd like to see a new techquickie episode of AMD GPUs and CPUs and how their CPUs compare to intel. AMD's marketing again has confused the heck out of me.
But linus you DO script your videos and you DO read it all from a teleprompter! You're just damn good at it! :D great vid!!
Android FTW
***** What the fuck does that has to do with anything?
Helium Oh shit, wrong comment
Please do about windows fluent design
