    • @CelmorSmith
      @CelmorSmith 9 лет назад

      Thunderbolt cables carry Displayport "lanes", you can imagine this by stuffing a displayport cable, power cable and PCIe cable, bundling that and you get a Thunderbolt cable.
      The "plugging in Graphics card via Thunderbolt" is not a bad idea.
      The graphics card could get power through thunderbolt, plug into the motherboard wie the PCIe lanes which are "in" the Thunderbolt cable" and carrying the display signal to the PC via Thunderbolt.
      The display could then be plugged into the PC itself.
      Now if you imagine the PC being a laptop and if theres not a display and graphics card plugged into it, you could just use the graphic processor in the CPU for on-the-go working, then you get home and plug in 1 thunderbolt cable for GPU and 1 HDMI or whatever cabble for you display and you are ready to go.
      I wish there would be a dock for a ultrabook that just support 1 GPU to be built in.

      Or buy direct from the company that makes their razors, which the business name is Dorco. I've been using the pace 6 since December and it seems that the 24 blade bulk buy would last me a whole year and more since I've only used up half of the supply. Don't know if you can buy direct in Europe(They do have a USA and a International website) but you should send them an email and see what they say.

  • @Pholiage

    I think it's stupid with new interface ports. Because they expect you to pay ridiculous amounts of money for it. USB works fine and HDMI works fine. And I have never had the thought cross my mind "hmm if only I could connect them both because it would make my life easier.." I bought a Ipad 4 and thought that it would be nice to connect it to my tv. Guess what 60bucks for an adapter. Because these bullshit new greater interfaces. Mini hdmi works fine and is available on bloody cellphones. Unless it comes standard and is cheap as the current tech, ill keep passing on it.

    • @Pholiage
      @Pholiage 9 лет назад

      ***** True. But eventually this will find its way to consumers aswell. Just like the "Lightning" interface I just explained with the ipad

    • @Pholiage
      @Pholiage 9 лет назад

      Well that's what I mean. If the thing would have the mini hdmi and usb like everything else you wouldnt need the adapter to be able to use the Lightning interface which is basically the same thing as Thunderbolt. Combinding signals into one. They should include adapters, not force you to pay for something you expect would be available on a "new" device like the competitors have. It's nice yes when they come up with new technology. But as Linus pointed out Thunderbolt isnt cheap. And when it arrives to replace Lighting you can be sure they'll ask 100 dollars for an adapter. This is the reason why you have industry standards. Like USB and philps screwdrivers.

      ***** Duplicating a 3tb drive over USB3 would use less than half of USB3's bandwidth. Most harddrives dont go far beyond 1-2 gigabits

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 9 лет назад +1

      Christoffer Nørskov It's still faster over Thunderbolt. Take it from someone who has several USB 3.0 and a couple of Thunderbolt external desktop drives and who moves a lot of data quite often. Thunderbolt has a much more consistent high throughput than USB which works more in bursts than sustained. It's always been a problem with USB which is why a lot of people used FireWire instead if they had the option.

    • @chris195868
      @chris195868 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Yea, i know, i have two enterprise class drives in raid 0 myself, and they are absolutely insane, but one alone would still not saturate a usb 3 connection. Enterprise class SSDs are a thing, but at that point they may as well just operate the entire array of servers and storage devices on an internal fiberoptic network. It's not as expensive as one might think, the dad of a friend of mine has run fiberoptic cables through the entire house, and then converts that to ethernet at the walls to make upgrading to faster speeds much easier, and it wasn't that expensive (compared to running new cables through the walls everytime a new standard came out

    Something Linus missed out: Thunderbolt can be used to implement hot-pluggable, at least external, GPU. Someone have experimented and found out that by strapping a gaming GPU over Thunderbolt to a 11-inch MacBook Air (the wimpiest laptop that still rocks a Thunderbolt connector) it almost turned that ultraportable into a gaming battlestation.

    • @kebakent
      @kebakent 8 лет назад +4

      +陈北宗 The key point is "almost". The connection did not have sufficient bandwidth to match the maximum, so it depended on the requirements of the game, and unplugging the cable would crash the computer. External GPU is definitely the future, but it is just that, in the future.

    • @hikaru-live
      @hikaru-live 8 лет назад +1

      kebakent Thunderbolt 3.0 will have enough bandwidth to handle a mid-range GPU (GTX 950 and the like) and the crashing problem can be fixed by providing a hot-plug-friendly driver.

    in 2020, MANY PCs have Thunderbolt 3, and most of them have USB-C, which is the same physical connector. USB 4 is pretty much here too, which essentially is Thunderbolt 3. Many devices now use this connector, PCs, Android phones, ALL Macs, and even the iPad Pro. We nearly have a true UNIVERSAL connector. All Thunderbolt 3 connectors are also USB-C, but not the other way around. Pretty soon you won't have to ask "what kind of phone do you have?" when your friend asks for a phone charger.

      This is true but then why isn't the laptop GPUs up to par with the desktop ones then? TalesOfWar

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 9 лет назад +2

      Martino Ringo HD Simple. They don't have the space to cool them in a laptop. A desktop GPU is as big as an entire laptop in terms of its volume. There's only so much you can do in such a small space so they have to clock them lower to produce less heat. They also have to think of power consumption. They can't drink as much juice given they don't have a wall outlet to draw constant fresh power from, it's all contained within a battery with only a finite charge.

    • @hamburgersteo2k10
      @hamburgersteo2k10 9 лет назад

      Surely there's more to it than cooling, though? I would imagine that the bigger the card, the more components, cores and onboard memory you could achieve.

      E3agl oh i see well apple are just selfish anyway lol thats why i like the freedom of pc windows, macs are so tightly closed to there systems.

      Herve 00110001 00111001 Shango00111001 00110100 I don't disagree with you that macs aren't somewhat limited, but I also use more pcs and linux distros than macs. Why do you judge me just off the top of your perspective?

      E3agl oh sorry because in your very first comment you've said something about mcs and so i took as you was on talking about stuff that connects to apple devices and computers.

    Light Peak was optical, but, because it was based on USB, is limited to less than 5 meters because that is the limit for USB2. USB3.0, 3.1, Type C, and Thunderbolt 3 (over Type C) have the same limitation. When that will be resolved it TBD.

    I enjoy LTT and Tech quickie videos, however the ratio of sponsor time to content in this one in particular is a bit off! It;d be nice to save the full-length plugs for the full length videos on the other channel, and keep it in the spirit of the channel, short and sweet, over here. Just my 2c! Keep up the great work.

    The only reason I'd ever consider thunderbolt.. is for an external video card, for low power laptops and things like that. But even that is still not really there yet and only a select few the high end motherboards that cost an arm and a leg, support thunderbolt to begin with...

    1:51 I know a guy editing music videos for Whiz Khalifa, Nicki Minaj etc. and his thunderbolt 2 setup back in 2012 was getting him 1300MB/s read and 1200MB/s+ writes to an ssd thunderbolt device. He uses it for his editing but he chews through data like a maniac. Just saying - not that far from the theoretical maximum + he also has a big monitor hooked up (usually)

    Over one-quarter of the entire video is an ad... is that really necessary?

    • @bratz2
      @bratz2 9 лет назад +28

      Umm probably if you want to keep seeing videos.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife 9 лет назад +1

      bratz2 A one-minute ad in a four-minute video is totally ludicrous. If all RUclips videos had that kind of ad-to-content ratio ( *in addition* to all of the banner, pre-roll, and post-roll ads ) it'd be considered a "spam site" and nobody would ever watch it.
      Other tech-related channels of similar subscriber counts only have a brief (10 seconds or less) sponsorship message at the beginning of each video (no sales pitch and lame jokes, just mentioning the sponsor and their web site).

      @18aidanme 9 лет назад +9

      vwestlife Why are you bitching about it? it's not liked they shoved it right in the middle of the video, there's litterally nothing wrong with the ad, it's benefical for everyone, The companies make money, Linus makes money, Linus uses a fraction of the money to make the video for you, me and everyone else to watch, so, STOP BITCHING AND MOANING ABOUT AN AD THAT BENEFITS EVERYONE!

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife 9 лет назад +1

      18aidanme How do the ads "benefit" you? Are you really that brainwashed in Linus-fandom to think that he honestly loves and recommends his advertisers' products as much as he makes it seems in the ads? He's getting *PAID* to do that! They're not unbiased reviews, they're paid advertising.

    • @18aidanme
      @18aidanme 9 лет назад +10

      vwestlife The ads are the reason the videos are up, which benefits us, are you stoo stupid to see that? The videos teach us about tech products and we wouldn't have them without the ads, now sit the fuck down.

    The thunderbolt software for windows is terrible. Always 13% CPU usage causing the CPU to work hard all the time.
    There is too much shit to clean up for those small ass peppermint butt wipes lol. May as well just keep using a wash cloth and soap and if at work, those hard ass paper towels with the hand soap xD

    Linus, do you think you could do a video about how internet speeds differ between nations. Since South Korea just announced a 10 gbps service available to consumers, it would be appropriate to talk about how internet here in the US has declined in progress over the last few years because of cable company stagnation.
