This was a CLASSIC example of how it didn't take excessive videos, screen graphics & effects, or over-the-top, over-opinionated, & ego-driven maniacs to carry a broadcast. The Yankees on WPIX were a New York institution, and Phil Rizzuto, Bill White, & Frank Messer were true baseball men who could keep an audience entertained simply by their conversations and their rapport. I guess the worst mistake we made as fans was believing they would be there forever.
As a kid in the 70’s when I had to go to bed I never cared. Just put the radio on and listen to these great men call the games. It was such a joy. Pure peace and happiness listening. A time in life I wished my sons had the chance to experience.
The Rizzuto/White years were my childhood. Loved listening to these two in action, even when I wasn't old enough to truly understand baseball. Such a great pairing. Thank you for posting this!!!!!! :-)
Phil and Bill were the absolute best. I knew it as a kid growing up watching the games on WPIX. They had unbelievable chemistry. They made baseball fun and played off each other well. Plus, each had a keen sense of humor. They were the pinnacle of Yankees baseball for that era.
No game and still over 20,000 views. Priceless. Just shows the respect for these two greats. Two knowledgeably and experienced broadcasters in a natural conversation. Just some of the great ballplayers heard in this rain delay Joe Dimaggos, Ted Williams, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, Harmon Killebrew, Babe Ruth, Frank Viola, Dave Winfield, Yogi Berra, Don Mattingly, Tommy John, Sweet Lou, Jim Kaat, Davey Johnson, Bobby Murcer, Bill Kunkel, Willie Randolph, even themselves all in about 5 minutes. I watch the 2 part videos at least once a week. It's very relaxing, educational and takes me back. Thanks for the upload. The only bad thing about these videos is they are too short.
I listen to this and I’m 10 years old again. Ah the memories of warm Summer nights, Yankee baseball and WPIX will never be beat. On a side note, hearing Scooter say, “I read that in the paper” about Tommy John going to The Yankees. Boy how times have changed.
Two men who lived and breathed baseball for decades and who liked each other both professionally and personally will ALWAYS have something to talk about.
Rizzuto saw The Babe!!! And, he always underplayed how great he was as a SS. Phil & White were what baseball broadcasters used to be and will not have again. Unless people just start acting themselves
Even in a rain delay they are great. Miss these guys. I wish there were more uploads of rizzuto and white. I would rather watch the old games with rizzuto and white than the knuckle heads today
Met fan, but watched a ton of Yankee games and always loved Rizzuto and White on WPIX channel 11. I'm sure Yankee fans my age (mid 40s) also grew up with Kiner and McCarver on WOR channel 9. Hey Dave Windfield - this buds for you!!!!!!!!!
Just two guys talking baseball. I love how seamlessly they go from topic to topic, I’m sure they could go on like that for hours and it would still be interesting. I especially liked the discussion of the roster limits. Nowadays they pack the bullpens with as many relievers as possible with only three position players on the bench with one always being the backup catcher.
Thanks for this. I will be 60 this year. Everyone always laughs about Phil's broadcasting. Yes he did jokes, birthdays (mine once) etc., but he spoke the truth about what he saw. And he wasn't just a Yankee fan - he would and did criticize Yankees. Bill White was excellent also. Straight reporter. Frank Messer was a little more timid but those three guys.... God, they are so much better and HONEST than today's broadcasters! Michael Kay is a corporate man, I did love Jim Katt. THANK YOU!
The banter between these two was effortless. Bill was a natural and so fluid in moving the conversation. Phil always made me chuckle because he'd remind me of that chatterbox uncle you'd try to pry yourself from at family gatherings. Boy, I miss them.
You never needed to cut to local programming during a rain delay if you had Phil Rizzuto in the booth. The great man could weave stories and talk baseball all night long :D
i am a red sox fan and i love these guys....what a great team they were....used to visit my cousin in the bronx and loved to watch wpix....i remember dave rhigetti no hitting the sox on july 4 one year if i am not mistaken
Yes, I consider Messer to be the best "pure" announcer that the Yankees ever had. Him and Mel Allen. He talked perfectly, great voice. I have collected some CDs of Yankees 1980s radio broadcasts, and he was THE guy on those; doing the post-game, etc). Plus, who can forget all those old-timers' day introductions. I do think that Rizzuto gets less credit than he should for being a great announcer; often people only talk about the funny things he'd do.
JUST FOUND THIS AGAIN . FOR ANYONE THAT GREW UP IN THE 80s , this is PURE GOLD. THIS TAKES YOU BACK TO A BETTER TIME AND AN AMAZING CULTURE OF YANKEE BASEBALL. PURE BASEBALL. THE WPIX TELECASTS WERE A BIG PART OF ANY DIE HARD YANKEE FAN. AND PHIL AND BILL? THEY WERE LIKE 2 BUDDIES THAT YOU REALLY LOVED LISTENING TO. EDDIE LAYTON ON THE ORGAN. BOB SHEPPARD ON THE PUBLIC ADDRESS, AND THE PERFECT STADIUM. THE CATHEDRAL . A BUILDING LIKE NO OTHER. WHAT A CULTURE. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE. THESE TELECASTS ALSO REMIND YOU OF WHAT IT WAS LIKE SITTING IN YOUR SEAT ( FOR THOSE THAT WENT TO MANY GAMES AS I DID) AND LISTENING TO THE ORGAN , ANNOUNCEMENTS AND THE CROWD. JUST A SPECIAL PURE FEELING. A BYGONE ERA SORELY MISSED !! MY REMEDY? RELIVE IT BOTH AT HOME AND AT WORK - HERE IS MY EMULATION OF WHAT I CONSIDER THE GREATEST EXPERIENCE ON EARTH ...THE OLD YANKEE STADIUM= ruclips.net/video/D7W5N9TySsQ/видео.html
I grew up on White, Rizzuto and Messer. I was 7 in 1977 and still recall watching the Boston/Yankees playoff game from NJ. I am amazed at the humility of both of these guys not wanting to talk about their own careers and focus on the current crop. You don't get that much in today's retired players turned analysts.
Love how Rizzuto would leave after the sixth inning, so he could beat the traffic. Also some funny moments when there was lightning, he would drop the mic RUN from the booth.
I remember as a boy in the 1970's driving with my grandparents those summer nights in Upstate New York between North Syracuse and Fourth Lake...Yankee game on the radio...the signal drifting in and out...sometimes loud & clear...with Phil Rizzuto, Bill White, and Frank Messer trading-off doing play-by-play & color. Almost musical. Very special times.
They had great chemistry and both were very nice gentlemen. White went on to become president of the National League, and Rizzuto made the HOF as a player and broadcaster. And if that wasn't enough, there's always Paradise by the Dashboard Lights.
What??? No commercials every 25 seconds. And listen to the organ music in the background! The song "Granada" is played. Unheard of by today's standards. In depth conversations with no interruptions !
thank you for posting this...phil rizzuto and bill white were the best...those were the days...i love the yankees and cannot stand the announcers these days...i can't even listen to sterling and waldman on the radio...horrible...thanks so much for posting...i never found a rain delay so exciting...holy cow
Ohhh Did You Just See That Lightning!! I Tell Ya White I About Jumped Right Out Of The Booth!! HoHoHoly Cowww!! Great Memories Of Phil Ruzzuto On Wpix 11 Alive In The 70s
I wasn't a Yankees fan, but when I lived in Wilkes-Barre PA, I had the best of both worlds - my team (The Mets) on WOR and the Yankees on WPIX. The White/Rizutto broadcast team was one of the best .
Why is Bill White not in the Hall of Fame? 8-time All-Star. 7-time Gold Glove winner. World Series winner. Groundbreaking broadcaster. NL President. For his overall service to Baseball, it is long-beyond time for him to be enshrined.
It's good to hear baseball broadcasters who can string an intelligent sentence together without using ...like.., ...sort of.....kind of.. verbal krutches that the current crop of cardboard cutouts do all the time. Two ex-players who may not have attended college outshine the likes of Kay, Sterling and Waldman & Co..
Someone needs to do a Rizzuto/White RUclips channels. Endless uploads.. please!!!! I think the Yanks did indeed pickup Tommy John that year and his “surgically repaired arm” was historic!
I had to laugh when they were talking about sluggers who don't strike out that much and Scooter said "Yogi" and bill white asked "Berra?" haha like how many other Yogis could he be talking about?
Bill White... pure class

I could listen to this stuff all day long. The Rizzuto/White/Messer trio was so awesome.
Couldn't agree more!
And the organ in the background! I miss the organ.
I agree. We fans didn't understand that these announcers were gold at the time. We thought that it was normal, until they were gone.
@@gynandroidhead I do listen to them everyday, thanks to youtube.
Just two great old ball players chatting through a rain delay. What professionals they were, and had so much FUN ! Without analytics !
One of the greatest things about this fabulous video is that you don't hear the phrase "DOT COM "
and no friggin commercials and it's on free tv.
As a kid in the 70’s when I had to go to bed I never cared. Just put the radio on and listen to these great men call the games. It was such a joy. Pure peace and happiness listening. A time in life I wished my sons had the chance to experience.
we were lucky growing up 70s
The Rizzuto/White years were my childhood. Loved listening to these two in action, even when I wasn't old enough to truly understand baseball. Such a great pairing. Thank you for posting this!!!!!! :-)
So TRUE These guys were not just great ballplayers, and not just friends, but AMAZING broadcasters. What ever happened to fun?
Great chemistry
They were the dads we never had
Same
Bill White and Phil Rizzuto best chemistry in a broadcast team ...l
Grew up listening to Bill White, Scooter, Frank Messer. They use to rotate during game broadcasting between WPIX and WINS.
One of the great things about watching Yankee games back in the day was listening to Bill White and Phil Rizzuto. What a great broadcasting team.
Phil and Bill were the absolute best. I knew it as a kid growing up watching the games on WPIX. They had unbelievable chemistry. They made baseball fun and played off each other well. Plus, each had a keen sense of humor. They were the pinnacle of Yankees baseball for that era.
What memories. I will always cherish this broadcasting team.

Loved there voices intellect and common sense ..I was single digits into teens but always loved these 3 sportscasters god bless them
Even in a rain delay they are great. Miss these guys. I wish there were more uploads of rizzuto and white. I would rather watch the old games with rizzuto and white than the knuckle heads today

These guys and Messer were in my house and part of my childhood every summer in the 1970s. There are no words for how much I miss them.

Love this....even has Eddie Layton tickling those ivories!!
This is television gold!
AND THE LATE GREAT EDDIE LAYTON ON THE ORGAN!!!
i am a red sox fan and i love these guys....what a great team they were....used to visit my cousin in the bronx and loved to watch wpix....i remember dave rhigetti no hitting the sox on july 4 one year if i am not mistaken
You are correct. I believe it was 1983. We had just gotten to a resort in the Catskills and my Mom (RIP), cheered when she saw the box score on TV.
Frank Messer was a great broadcaster for the Yankees in the 70s and 80s. His post game shows on the radio after Yankee games were the best.
My grandfather played golf with Frank Messer on several occasions. An excellent broadcaster and great guy.

Brings back so many memories listening to Yankee games as a kid! I loved listening to them both!

stevedrums Hahaha me too
Love how Rizzuto would leave after the sixth inning, so he could beat the traffic. Also some funny moments when there was lightning, he would drop the mic RUN from the booth.
The great old Yankee stadium.
Old/New (Refurbished). The Old Old stadium had support columns and the monuments were within the playing field.
I always listen to this every couple of years. What a great tandem these 2 guys were. Great chemistry.
I remember as a boy in the 1970's driving with my grandparents those summer nights in Upstate New York between North Syracuse and Fourth Lake...Yankee game on the radio...the signal drifting in and out...sometimes loud & clear...with Phil Rizzuto, Bill White, and Frank Messer trading-off doing play-by-play & color. i remember these voices from the 80s they are the reeason i d love going to red sox yankees games back then baseball hasnt been the same since then
I miss these guys so much. I never thought this would end back then. Thanks for posting this gem!!!
Legendary Broadcasters together
They had great chemistry and both were very nice gentlemen. White went on to become president of the National League, and Rizzuto made the HOF as a player and broadcaster. And if that wasn't enough, there's always Paradise by the Dashboard Lights.
Holy cow! I don't believe it! Miss you, Rizzuto!
Yes, I was about 9 or 10 in ’86 myself. They were the announcers that I remember hearing in the ’80s when I was a kid watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
What??? No commercials every 25 seconds. And listen to the organ music in the background! The song "Granada" is played.
Unheard of by today's standards. In depth conversations with no interruptions !
This is so nice to listen to. I loved Rizzuto.
thank you for posting this...phil rizzuto and bill white were the best...those were the days...i love the yankees and cannot stand the announcers these days...i can't even listen to sterling and waldman on the radio...horrible...thanks so much for posting...i never found a rain delay so exciting...holy cow
This is better than the game
Ohhh Did You Just See That Lightning!! I Tell Ya White I About Jumped Right Out Of The Booth!! HoHoHoly Cowww!! Great Memories Of Phil Ruzzuto On Wpix 11 Alive In The 70s
This was my childhood right here. Just great memories. Thanks for posting!!!
I wasn't a Yankees fan, but when I lived in Wilkes-Barre PA, I had the best of both worlds - my team (The Mets) on WOR and the Yankees on WPIX. The White/Rizutto broadcast team was one of the best .
In 1986, their championship year, Mets broadcasters Ralph Kiner and Tim McCarver were great as well.
Even the rain delays were better back then.
This brought me back to my childhood... thank you for posting this
I don’t care if any pro sports come back, I’ll just watch footage from these better times
I should add White and Messer to that. Rizzuto and White were the Abbot and Costello of my generation.
Why is Bill White not in the Hall of Fame?
8-time All-Star. 7-time Gold Glove winner. World Series winner. Groundbreaking broadcaster. NL President.
For his overall service to Baseball, it is long-beyond time for him to be enshrined.
that was great!
Brings you right back...
Enjoyed them in both growing as a kid also other broadcaster Frank Messer ? Good times
Great baseball days
I miss those days.
RIZZUTO is GOD compared to the fools in the booth today. There simply is Nooooo comparison.
so many today put ego ahead of just simply broadcasting
Always loved the Scooter and Bill White Frank Messer and Bobby Murcer From RedSox fan
Can we get Bill white in the hall of fame
Really, some type of lifetime achievement award at least - player, broadcaster and president of the National League.
Ahhhh 70s my 1st decade. Almost every Mets game on 9, every Yank game on Pix11.
On Sundays, they would show an Abbot and Costello film, then broadcast the Yankee home games. Channel 9 had Vince McMahon and MSG wrestling.
The best duo.
"Now we will go to an episode of the Odd Couple."
Miss these guys.
Eddie Layton playing the organ great
Miss that organ....
❤ Rizzuto White n Messer!!
They don't make broadcasters like this any more and in some cases baseball has done an absolutely horrible downgrade since then.
Someone needs to do a Rizzuto/White RUclips channels. Endless uploads.. please!!!!
I think the Yanks did indeed pickup Tommy John that year and his “surgically repaired arm” was historic!
Thanks
Phil is just funny in anything he says
RIP Bill Kunkel #9
Best ever team.
I had to laugh when they were talking about sluggers who don't strike out that much and Scooter said "Yogi" and bill white asked "Berra?" haha like how many other Yogis could he be talking about?
Now they have women who have never played the game announcing
1:24 harmon 1:50 babe 2:24 ted Williams 3:08 yogi 4:00 tommy John
7:54 saturdee! that was worth watching the video!!
How many commentators bring up talking baseball with the cops who run the traffic in any stadium these days?
Phil always put gum on the button on top of his cap
When baseball was good.
RAISE THE FUCKING VOLUME. OLDIES CANNOT HEAR
1
I like men in white sailor suits and I am a Man...does that make me "Funny ha ha Queer"
