The Sad Story Of America’s First Supermodel

- She’s considered America’s first supermodel. But she died alone after 65 years in an asylum.
Audrey Munson was born in Rochester, New York in 1891. She wanted to be an actress as a little girl. At 17, she moved to New York with her mother to pursue her dream.
One day, Audrey was window-shopping on Fifth Avenue. That’s when she was spotted by photographer Felix Benedict Herzog. He was so fascinated by her beauty he asked her to sit for him in his studio. Herzog also introduced her to the art world. Her first major job was posing for sculptor Isidore Konti. It was him who first suggested she pose naked. Though Audrey’s mum was hesitant, she was eventually convinced by Konti’s words. The collaboration resulted in a statuary Three Graces.
All of them were inspired by her. Shortly after that, Munson became a model in high demand. She posed for painters and illustrators as well, but most of her colleagues were carvers. Fountains, columns, and relief panels all over New York featured her image. Citizens started calling her Miss Manhattan.
In 1915, she participated in the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Audrey modeled for three-fifths of the sculptures created for the fair. The event earned her the nickname Panama-Pacific Girl. That same year, she made her film debut in Inspiration. She played a sculptor’s model, becoming the first actress in America to appear nude in a film. Munson starred in a few more controversial pictures before returning to her primary job.
Being an advocate for women artists, she refused to stay in her male counterparts’ shadow. In 1921, she authored a series of articles about a model’s crucial role in the artistic process. She disclosed unequal pay and the difference in attitude towards actresses and posers.
Soon Audrey’s luck ran out. She got caught up in a string of scandals. She filed a suit against a producer when she received an invalid check for her role in a movie. In another incident, her landlord killed his wife claiming to have done it to marry Munson. Since then, she struggled to find work. She attempted suicide in 1922. Audrey finally ended up in St. Lawrence State Hospital for the Insane in 1931. She remained there for the next 65 years. She died in 1996 aged 104. Once known as American Venus, she was buried in an unmarked grave.

She lived for 104 years!
She could have done so much more if she wasn't in assylum
its shocking that she lived for a long time until she was 104 yrs old!!! GEEZ
They did not have good medications then. If she were suicidal she could not live alone.
@@PennyMsElite agree
I find it amazing that she was able to live that long in an asylum given the type of abuse inflicted on "patients" at these facilities. I always figured that one might have better luck living to be over a hundred in prison.
I could have done so much more if I am not imprisoned by my negative thoughts! :(
What's sad is that no one placed a Headstone or just wrote her name.

Rori Runacon Maybe there should be a drive to collect funds to donate a memorial.

The grave is marked with her name...it's not unmarked grave... She has a headstone with her details..
Actually they did. Her family got a headstone and used it on what was her 125th birthday

👍 It's because of the project Me Too, that we hear about her. Efrat. Israel.😢

Did some further reading found out She was buried without a gravestone of her own in the Munson family plot in New Haven Cemetery, In 2016, 20 years after her death, her family decided to add a simple tombstone for what would have been her 125th birthday
Well that was mighty kind of her worth less family , ☮️

her life story tears me up..wasted 65yrs in asylum, but so glad after a years she passed away that her family put something on her grave to honor her.
Took them 20 years to add a damn tombstone? Smh
Her family should be ashamed. Where was their love & respect while she was suffering? After her money was gone?
Is that even possible? So beautiful, but not a single person to rescue her. People just only used her like a tissue and threw her away when they were done! She deserved better. Oh god, never ever let this happen to anyone, please!

Read the wikipedia about her life. Her life has ruined just like any other sculpture models backin the day. She also suffered from mental illness which has more to do with her. When her career was fading away in the summer of 1921 Munson conducted a nationwide search, carried by the United Press, for the perfect man to marry. She ended the search in August claiming she didn't want to get married anyway.
Wow that's so sad. She deserved better.

i think you are the only person who commented without pity words (I mean yours is the only positive one lol)
I totally see it
This just reminds of how back then depression and suicide was seen as an untreatable mental illness
This just goes to show that the world show business is a dark, twisted and demented industry camouflaged by a lot of glitter and glamour
This is a tragic story. Such a tragedy that she was locked away for so long and to die in anonymity. A suicide attempt does not make you insane! She could have received help and been released. Someone was behind her being left in there. But she was probably out of her mind after so many years in there. Whoever was behind her demise I certainly hope they got theirs in the hereafter. I am a firm believer that we pay for our misdeeds against the innocent. And she definitely has misdeeds perpetrated upon her. May she rest in Eternal Peace 🙏🙏🙏

Sadly, asylum is not as good as mental health hospital nowadays. So different :(
@@nathinsio4079 people were very close minded back then
It's really sad, but you have to understand what understanding they had of mental illness back then. Anything that seemed "abnormal" was insane and there was no in-between. Perhaps there were different kinds of "insane" to them, but insane just the same.
so she was already trying to kill herself by age 31 but instead she was forced to live to 104 while spending the rest of it in an asylum

Rachael's Place little research will show you they buried people until the mid 90's at one point she was sent to a nursing home only to be sent back where she lived until she died.
You would have thought they would have been able to have rehabilitated her given how long she was in there.
The grave is marked with her name...it's not unmarked grave... She has a headstone with her details..
A very sad ending🤤She was being used by opportunists, exploited and dumped away. Felt very sorry for her. Rest In Peace😔
@Corno di Bassetto You make a good point, it was her choice to take off her clothes. But consider that she was young and gave into the temptations of fame, fortune and attention that were offered by men far older and probably more skilled at manipulation.
Fame is never too easy to handle. Sad that she lived so long but couldn't live well.
Karthika S can you imagine if the kardashians.... were soo desperate for fame until this suddenly.... came back
She wasn’t desperate for fame. She was exploited, used and thrown away. Did you even read what the video said?

Not alot of people live that long! And also it is very sad that she was sent to an asylum.
Wow, 90s America had a legend in their midst, who's age alone defied stereotypes, yet no one even knew.
This channel needs to be back
What happen why this channel not uploading any videos ?
Back then people were confined to institutions for all sorts of reasons that today would be considered petty and not in the least a symptom of mental illness. Mental asylums were often used as dumping grounds for the unwanted. Being a woman in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries engaging in risqué behaviour that led to scandalous gossip or rumours of impropriety and then attempting suicide because of the resulting ostracism at a time when it was considered taboo, were probably enough to get her committed and once in she probably became institutionalised with behaviour that would today be considered normal but back then could be labelled as a neurosis.
Wow beauty was so different back then
Christina Schneider Agreed. No plastic surgery or PhotoShop.
I noticed that too. If she had been modeling today, she would have been raked across the coals for the size and shape of her body.
If you mean the "beauty industry " ... I think its the same cause at the end of the day people will use you or replace you .
That's what I was thinking
Lindseyann2u no, i think she means that this woman likely wouldn’t be considered beautiful today. she is not beautiful to me.

Do you all think that insane asylums have just "disappeared"? Also, keeping someone inside and away from society for, what, 50 or so years at that point in the 90s, how would they even be able to assimilate into society at that point? For a 100% lucid person this would be an insurmountable task. Not only that, but what support system did she have? No family, finances, outside friends. Were they to just take her to Time's Square and drop her off? The crime was locking her up in there in the first place. After 50 plus years away from society, I really doubt that there was anything that could be done by that time.
