"Wish we had a shop air compressor out here....." *Thunder Creek trailer crying in the background*
I worked for Sunbelt rentals as a mechanic on lifts for about 5 years. 99% of my equipment was JLG. Loved them. Easy to work on. Here’s a huge tip for you. JLG has a service line and they can walk you through any problems you run into over the phone.
my kubota and case ih dealer had few those jlg lifts inside his shopand got fixed
Hi Chad what shop did you work at, I worked for Sunbelt from 94 to 2005 in the Northeren Virginia area at 3 different shops, the first shop I worked in was McLean Rentals and I think Sunbelt bought us in 95 or 96.
@@wardcollins9574 I worked in Hilliard Ohio
This was totally awesome to watch you guys get this running
I would rethink letting that dealer do service on your stuff .
That said it might pay to hang around the place and see what other alleged basket cases you can pick up for scrap price .
Oh , and see if they found that mystery turbo in the mean time .
Naah it's sounds more like they just didn't care about this unit / owner. They where up to selling a New one and just get rid of this one asap..
Truthfully a mechanic likly never looked at it. Being an older machine it probably outlived its life as a rental unit. It has an issue. Customer complained of oil coming out of the exhaust, and a suit decided its time to get rid of it. It happens more often than one might think.
@@indianaoutdoors4379 I'd say some one did look at it, decided they didn't want to mess with it or couldn't figure it out.. Dumped a quart or 2 of oil or diesel down the exhaust pipe, and made up that story about a blown turbo.
Stealth turbo?
Thanks for sharing the turbo went so far out it packed up and moved lol that’s crazy the mechanic said that you know he never even looked at it 😂 if I owned that company and seen this I’d be looking for a new mechanic
Yeah if the dealer watched that video I bet he was told to pack his tools.
I don't think is was the mechanic, I think the dealership was too lazy to spend the money to have a mechanic work on it! The giveaway was when they said it had a bad turbo when in fact it didn't have one!! They were going to throw the mechanic under the bus!!!
They said the turbo ran away. It ran all the way off the machine!😂
I love how MBTS is so agreeable and pretends he knows what’s going on. 😊
That blank stare he always gives DP is so funny!! He has that look in his eye that says he doesnt have a clue what Mike is saying but he ends up nodding his head and agreeing with his suggestions! LOL
I've thought the same thing many times. 😂 has not a clue 85.75% of the time.
Hello, it did seem that Aaron knew how to operate the boom lift very well without asking anyone about it. He is a definite asset!
@@dansbrown1313 He better be very good at a man lift, especially since he is a boiler maker and they spend hours and hours up and down in them on the jobsites.
@@warrenmichael918 That’s why these two are perfect fit! Lol!
I think this has been one of the most enjoyable videos in a while.
Great troubleshooting.
Thanks
@@DirtPerfect I hope your next video is one showing us how you degreased and washed it. Viewers love watching things get pressure washed.
The satisfaction ya get from being able to fix something yourself is always an amazing feeling, that right there is a cartwheel moment 🤣 Congratulations guys ! 👍✌️
It's nice to get a lucky deal like this. But risk comes with reward. And you found a 4 cylinder clover! Congrats DP
I was so emotionally invested in this video that when she fired up the final time and ran perfect I threw my hands up in the air, GREAT video
Lol thanks
Great work guys! Mike thanks for encouraging Logger Wade to get back on RUclips!! It was great seeing him post a video!!! Good man!
I'll second that commotion.
Mike I got to tell you right now that was one hell of a gamble. You and Aaron figured that thing out and got her running. Now all she needs is a bath and a big old DIRT PERFECT sticker on it!! Congrats buddy
... and don't forget to paint the counter weight to make it look real perty, especially if Chris (LD18) is dropping by.
How is it a gamble? If DP couldn’t get it running he could sell it for scrap and get his money back I’d think but he has confidence in his mechanical ability as he should. He figures things out using logic and common sense and he’s good at it
@@robertmiller9645 yes sir i agree with you. He does follow the process of elimination. I always live by a golden rule... if you can understand how something works you can find the problem and if you can find the problem you can fix the problem. As far as a gamble thats what he called it so I just reassured him that it was a great gamble..
Great job of troubleshooting, sure was handy to have " spare parts " on hand. That turned out to be a great buy. If the dealership sees this there might be a meeting between shop foreman and mechanic. Im happy this turned out good for you.
Man this was building up excitement from every step on and I'm so glad I watched to have the shared experience of the successful debugging session!
Congrats on finding a diamond in the rough. This is exactly why I work on all my own equipment as well. There are some fantastic techs out there, but there are some real fricking hacks as well. A lot of them can’t diagnose death correctly if their laptop doesn’t tell them so.
That's a great deal you really don't run across that often but when you do it feels like you accomplished something
Well, this is one that tech will never live down! I'm sure the dealer is going to be asking a lot of questions of the tech and the renters about this situation! Glad things worked out for Mike, and the wife will most likely be happier after this win. Now the trailer is in need of some desperate repairs!
I believe your knowledge working with a whole lot of common sense and being at the right place at the right time is how you scored huge in this scenario! Congratulations!
Fuel pump, actuator control valve, handful of wiring repair. Not too shabby for a 'blown' engine. And everything works! What a deal!
I tell you what Mike, I knew it was the "turbo" all along!! Those guys sure knew what they were saying right?!! Awesome video and so happy for you, as always thank you for bringing us along on your adventure!!!
What a blessing this acquisition turned out to be and it could not have happened to a more deserving and grateful human being-cheers to the MBTS for grinding through until the job was finished! ❤️🔧
And to think that it was sold as scrap! Great diagnosis, D.P. You and MBTS did a great job on this one. Wes from Watch WesWork would be proud of you guys.
GREAT video! Sometimes it's better to be Lucky! This is one of those times! Thanks Mike, Aaron & Captain! Lee
ok here's the tip of the day, learned this workin on aircraft all over the world, we used old photography reflector screens for shade, they have a stand that holds them up at any angle and cheap at pawn shops or photo shops
Awesome!!
I'm a DIYer. Been trying to find something to block the sun!
Thank you!!
It's always good when a plan comes together. You thought it could be fixed and you did it.
Mike and Aaron unbelievable find! With hard work and determination you’ve got one heck of a machine! Thanks for sharing! Kevin
Cool video. I spent 40+ years in automotive repair and loved electrical issues. That "Wiggle test" has solved a bunch of eltrical shorts and open circuit issues for me. I enjoy watching a master at their craf and you guys great at what you do.
I will say this.. it felt like I was watching Diesel Creek there for a bit… we all know his love of in-op equipment and rebuilding it in the woods… still, made out like a bandit on this one..
To be fair there was very little diesel creek belt squeal that Matt has on everything he owns
Good job guys. What a buy. JLG is in my Mother's home town of McConnellsburg PA.
This is now a training video for the dealership’s maintenance crew….nice job..!!!
Watching this lift video gave me a lift esp when I saw how much of a lift it gave y’all. Truly uplifting to see the lift lift MBTS.
First of all Mike, I think it's awesome that you sent it to Matt to help him with his build. Second, congrats on finding the fix so easy. You may want to tell the dealer that his mechanic didn't look at it at all. What I know about engines you can put in a thimble and lose it, and even I could see there was no turbo. Well done you two. Fabulous save and glad you have a well-working lift.
Don’t tell the dealer anything. Just tell him to give you a call when he has more salvage equipment.
these Deutz oil-cooled engines use a timing belt instead of a chain or gears..replacement is necessary when the engine sits unused for long periods as the belt will get flat spots and jump time..the fuel solenoids are high mortality rate failure items, there is a 2-wire and 3-wire style, with the 3-wire being the better one due to a low-amp 'hold' winding. Fuel lift pumps are high failure rate items as well
I got a feeling your friend at the dealership is going to be having some words with his mechanics when he's watched this video.
Nice to see you had a right result with this gamble though.
You mean soon to be former mechanic.
@@jdelbrid Very possibly, I mean when a manager is selling a $25,000 machine for $1500 scrap based on what you told him that's not a good situation.
Although even if the engine was blown it would still have been worth swapping it out, which seems more like they just wanted shot of the JLG & didn't want to put any labour or parts into it.
My thoughts are with the old owner who took a beating trading it in on new machine because the mechanic/ dealer told him wrong.
@@WombleUKyou mean $50,000 for that unit used 😉 for around $3,000 scrap price currently.
@@kevink4914 I thought Mike said the value & what he paid, but I might be mistaken.
I work on a bunch of welders with that same engine and as soon as you were describing it I immediately thought lift pump. I change them often, they also make one with a hand primer on it which is my preferred replacement. If you take those outer Phillips screws out of the pump you’ll expose the diaphragm and you’ll see the tear that was causing your leak
Those actuators fail a lot also, good to keep a spare on hand
Was it the same tech that determined that it was a blown turbo that pulled the gear.
Hahaha
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Nice find!!!
I was thinking the same as you,was fuel poured down the exhaust, being an on site machine, opportunity to vandalism is the possibility.
But you did the right prognosis route to get to the end result, good work .
Hope your well DP , noticed your breathing there (cameras pick up every noise well .
My first thought is, you have air on the fuel trailer. The Mack will work. Now you have to purchase parts for the other man lift and replace the broken boards on the trailer. All you came out ahead of deal. Well done DP.
Brilliant video, well done fella’s. So pleased with the end result. Plus, thanks Mike for taking the time to explain what and why you were working through the possible problems. For someone like me with no experience of diesel engines, I could follow along. Brilliant
Thanks
Yes indeed. I know it’s a pain to work & film at the same time, but what a education for those of us who look forward to your videos. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Great diagnosing and fixing
The video of truth where mbts goes nuts like a mad chipmunk over the broken trailer boards lol
I bought an umbrella stand that you drill into the dirt to give you shade anywhere you could want it.
Soooo... I'm thinking MTBS should get to pick the color you'll be painting it this winter...
:)
I hear he's a connoisseur of yellow ;)
46:28 "...we're out 4 connectors...": If you haven't tired them, they have heat shrink butt connectors now with solder in them. You don't crimp them. Just push the wires in and heat them up. Melts the solder, shrinks, and makes a robust joint.
I had to rewind to hear that price, if that was the price, I’m literally laughing my butt off, regardless I bet it was cheap, dealers wanted it out of their hair, well done men!
When work and laughter come together : IT"S DIRT PERFECT. Good days like these are hard to come by, enjoy the good times !
Does a new trailer deck come with the deal😎
Stay tuned
Rain bird Irrigation field mats work well on a trailer to distribute the weight to keep from breaking individual boards.
You have a beautiful flock of chickens! I love a mixed variety like that. And love your Kunis too! I had two but had to sell them when they got grown.i live in a residential area and just no room. But am thinking of raising one or two more. Thanks for letting us see your farm life. You have no ideal how many people are liveing their dreams thru you. Good luck and keep putting on more videos.
I'd be tempted to go back to the dealership and ask them to order you a new turbo and see what they say .
Check injectors like this all the time. One thing to do is check the strangler (manual shut off) cuts the injectors whilst cranking. Have had the injector pumps seized with the rack wide open due to contaminated fuel. When draining engine oil drain the oil cooler too, it holds a good 2-3 litres of oil, when refilling I usually take it 1/3 to 1/2 inch over the max on the dipstick, once it's run and the oil cooler and galleries are full the level's usually just below the full mark.
Your right about flipping that plate around to put the hubs in neutral
What a fantastic find. Good job trouble shooting it and not spending a dime. Happens once in a blue moon to a person glad it happened to you.
Thanks
Score!!!! Man that's cool that it was a minor issue
DP.. you do have an air hose out in the "Sunshine" shop. Your Thunder Creek trailer. Lol
Great video! Awesome save! Thanks 👍🏻🍀
⚾️Home run guys! After this cornhole tournament the demo days might dry up😂
I got a very nice JLG 600AJ last year in non-running condition. Squirrels had ravaged a lot of the wiring harnesses. Took a couple days but I got everything repaired and machine back in service.
I am really impressed by JLG. They offer all operators, service, and parts manuals free on their website. They also sell parts direct and are very fast to deliver.
Mike, you are way smarter than you let on, with diagnostics. Love your channel and your comrade with Aaron.☝☝☝
Good job getting the man lift running and operating
Compression test each cylinder to make sure you don't have a stuck valve
Alternate theory - failed fuel pump starts filling the crankcase with diesel, raising the oil level to the point where the pistons are pumping/aerating it furiously into the crankcase ventilation system. I don't know anything about this particular engine, but generally, that gets ported right into the intake somewhere. The over-revving due to bad wiring is just a bonus which probably exacerbated the oil pumping/aerating issue. Truly a grand slam of minor failures compounding into a "junk engine" diagnosis.
You are correct in turning the cap over to disengage the drive hubs, Your win their lose, on the drive hubs
Hell yea I love when people say it’s blown up just Becs it don’t work
Y'all are going to need to weld up a new exhaust manifold and pipe to keep the sound.
If you had "Thunder" hooked to your service truck, you would have had air in the 'shop'!
What a great gamble that worked out just fine ..she definitely fought ya but you did a near perfect job trouble shooting and getting it going and truly amazing to watch. Absolute bonus you had a new parts donor close by🤣 great purchase overall and appreciate you sharing your amazing day with us.👨🔧😎🛠️🇺🇸😇
There’s one bad thing still ! You have to refloor your trailer !! Lol. Great show !
Congratulations on a great find!!
It's nice to come out on top once in a while, rekindles your hope.
It was easy to see your previous diesel training was put to work on this machine and with patience from you and Aaron payed off I personally would not have thought that a previous renter would have done any thing to ruin a machine but it does seem logical to think so Very interesting video and I’m glad that your expertise was put to work and you got a great buy Hats off to you and Aaron Thanks for bringing us along
Would have cost you a small fortune to have others diagnose and fix that. Yay for the good guys!
Good morning ❤ awesome video 🎉. Great purchase ❤
I am so happy for you 😅So good to hear you that excited.love it when a plan comes together ❤
Nice job DP on getting it running you had the same reaction that Matt at diesel creek has when he gets a piece of equipment that hasn't been running figured out and running again good job guys keep up the good work and can't wait for the winter shop videos
Genius and luck is on your side. I wish i had the connections you do. I would have bought it too at scrap price. Even if it threw a rod. Still worth the investment. Atleast you didn’t have to worry about seating the bead on those tires. As thick as they are and being low profile…. Yeah they don’t really come off. If they do they basically seat there self.
Now you need to fix the deck on the low boy. Good job!!!
Stay tuned
Now all you have to do is replace your flooring on the trailer and maybe add some plate steel on top to spread the load out!
No no. No on the plate that’s a horrible idea with track equipment plz think about how dangerous that is
Time to slap a Dirt Perfect sticker on it and call it good!
If the owner of the dealership watched the videos, I’d bet there’s a ‘mechanic’ out looking for a new job this morning 😆
I think you need a umbrella or tarp as sun and rain blockage
Their loss is def a HUGE gain for you. Nice detective diagnosing. I kind of hope someone at the dealership sees this.
Four butt connectors and new wood for the trailer. Not too bad!
Never buy old manlifts - it's always wiring and/or long hose replacements in the boom. They really need to control the units wirelessly.
Had nothing but good luck over the years sorry to disappoint you
Nice lift for $1500!
Bought an '03 Subaru Forester body in really great shape for being in the salt belt. Listed as a mechanic's special needing head gaskets as it was loosing coolant. Long story short, the lower radiator hose clamp was broken. Drove it for 2 years before I got tired of oil leaking on the exhaust manifold and the replaced the head gaskets.
Oh, the guy I bought it from called his mechanic and he diagnosed it over the phone!
I did pull the engine out again to replace the rings as the oil consumption was a qt/1000 or less! Oil rings stuck in their groove. Just about ready to fire it up.
Finds like that don't come along every day. Great job guys!
That's a hell of a mechanic's special. Feels good to figure a mystery out.
Good buy. You two were happy as two boys in a toy store. Muffler bearings my arse.
Great job guys, nothing like good old fashioned diagnostic skills.
Worked on my own wild goose chase today. Overalled an entire electrical system. Should be good for a few months before something dies again.
Perseverance lads, perseverance. It pays off.
You should be able to do some awesome Christmas lights to the depot and shop with that baby running!
😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉the excitement built through the video!!! ❤
Dang Dirt, great job, now for a few rattle cans of paint. Man, won big!
Persistence paid off!!
Good find. Great troubleshooting too. I wish I had seen this video 2 years ago while I was troubleshooting fuel issues with my farm tractor. The trick with checking the injectors tubed so you can see injectors open and atomize was exceptional.
Thanks
Aaron is so talkative this morning, I just think you've lost him! "Yeah" doesn't commit him to any wrong decisions, lol! Congrats on finding chaffed wires! Try the wiring sooner in the process next time. So nice you've got such a great inventory of used parts to rob! Now call the dealer and start bragging how cheap you repaired this blown engine!! Have fun, great memories to recall everytime you use this machine! Mike, you just AMAZE yourself once you get these beasts up and running again! Just like picking the winning lottery numbers!!! You guys never seem to have a bad day as long as you are together trying to outdo the other guy! Love watching! I may be your most unusual fan, 75 yr. old grandma. raised by dad, grandparents and uncles and racing fans knee deep in blown engines, scrap parts, parts baking in mom's oven, basket cases.........if it had a motor, the guys were all there crowded around offering wisdom, and who's that young gal with grease on her hands, dirty face and dusty clothes? ME! Smiling ear to ear! Jimmy's girl!
It's always the last thing you check that is the cause of the problem.
That oil + diesel is great on fence posts or starting burn piles with a petrol (gas) trail to it. Never wasted at my place.
Handy to be able to swing the motor in and out :-)
What is better than one running JLB Man Lift? Answer is two. I hope you see this come true. When I worked in the Air Force the mechanical boy all ways blamed the Electricians for the problem while 90% of the time the problem was mechanical. The rest were electrical and these were harder to diagnose than your short pieces of wire. Good job spotting the problem.
Nice work DP!
