      I didn't remember it being that hard back then, lol....I think the biggest difference is in the balls, not the clubs.

    Brings back memories. I used a set of First Flight blades for over 20 years. Loved those irons. Wonder why I could hit those pretty well and now struggle to hit game improvement irons with better golf balls.

    I started playing persimmon and blades earlier this year and it has completely transformed my enjoyment of the game and my ballstriking.
    I’m 34 and grew up firmly in the metalwood era. I can remember my relatives playing persimmon in my earliest golf memories and am so glad I have gone down that route myself it brings the purity and fun back to a game which has largely lost its soul to the marketing teams.

      If you can find some, try it with the rubber band balls from that era. I have see a lot of them on ebay....it is quite a different game for sure!

    Nice work, you've even got a little Sam Snead shimmy going on there Tony!
    You boys could teach me a thing or two about the short game.
    Lofts were a club or two weaker for the date of clubs you're using.
    Those old balls are roughly 10 to 20% down on distance compared to modern depending on the brand and how well they've been stored, so that's the main reason you've shots were coming up short.

    • @GeezerTony
      @GeezerTony  Месяц назад +1

      Yes we know about the weaker lofts, at least 2 clubs weaker. Oggie plays currently with a set of S2H2 irons from the 80's and I hit that 7 the exact distance I hit my modern 9. ...the clubs I used I bought new in the 1970's...the balls are obviously used in addition to being old...I'm sure mine was a dud even more than Oggies was. We are going to try it again and this time I have some new Titleist DT wound balls for us. (unused anyway) Since you're a classic club guy, I have a Toney Penna 11 iron with it's original grip. Not sure how old that is but it's in really nice shape. Also a Wilson R90 SW with the brown shaft from the 70's...
      Sam Snead shimmy?

    • @ClassicGolfClubs
      @ClassicGolfClubs Месяц назад

      @@GeezerTony The Wilson R90 is a great club.
      The Sam Snead shimmy is that little hip bump he did to set his backswing in motion.

      That's for sure...I was playing (well) back then too but I didn't remember it being that difficult! We are going to try again after practicing a bit with these clubs....we went out on a cold start this time.
      Thanks for watching!

    I started playing again with new clubs after a 30 year hiatus and was surprised how high the ball flew.
    That's OK for some shots, but I wouldn't mind trading some of that altitude for distance.

    • @GeezerTony
      @GeezerTony  3 месяца назад +1

      If you get a set of the newer "loft jacked" clubs, that may help. My ball flight is somewhat lower compared to other players of my same ability. I don't mind as long as it stops ok....and it does.

  • @rickmtz5

    such a pure swing Tony! Do you think relaxed hands, arms, body etc allows for more lag and natural swing?

    • @GeezerTony
      @GeezerTony  3 месяца назад

      YES! And creates more clubhead speed than you can make using your muscles. Body rotation AHEAD of the club is the key!
      Thanks, Rick!

    Hey Geezer… maybe next time you can play a course with a good practice are and test a few shots with the old balls to try and get a sense of whether or not they have any life left in them.

    • @GeezerTony
      @GeezerTony  3 месяца назад +1

      I should have recognized the one I was hitting was a dud sooner! That last shot on the par 3 was a different ball and it went the correct distance. We will do this again in the near future and we might actually hit some range balls with these clubs before playing!

  • @SteveW60ish
    @SteveW60ish 2 месяца назад

    Tony - it appears to me that on set up you actually address the ball more towards the heel of the club? am I correct with this - and if so - why?

    • @GeezerTony
      @GeezerTony  2 месяца назад

      I get a lot of questions about this...yes you are correct. It's not something I consciously do, It doesn't even look like it's on the heel to me...I think it's just naturally where I found imake the best impact from over the years. The shaft does "droop" at impact, the weight of the clubhead tries to align with the shaft due to centrifugal force, so maybe that's some of the reason. Not anything we would teach people to do though.

    "my main goal is not to dump it into the bunker"? WHY not consider focusing on the task of what you want to do instead of thinking about dumping it into the bunker? GOLFERS do not get better because they don't have a plan or know exactly what to do!! ...........Plan the work and work the plan!!

    • @GeezerTony
      @GeezerTony  3 месяца назад

      Thanks range pro...that was the plan, to get it over the bunker because with an open face for added height to stop the ball, the tendency is to be short. Guess I could have worded it "main goal is to carry it over the bunker". Same result, but a more positive statement.

  • @Randy-mw1es

    It's was the balls.they wer old and dead I'm sure and the grips wer worn out.Theres no way I could play with old grips..especially that old.I bet they wer slick as could be.If they would have played goods balls and regripped the clubs they would have been able to do alot better.

    • @GeezerTony
      @GeezerTony  3 месяца назад

      Mostly the balls....I scrubbed the grips down with steel wool and they weren't too bad....but seemed very thin compared to todays size.
