Money. People that young are extremely naive and easy to impress. He probably made her promises about how she’d have a house, a car, money, etc. A naive 16-year-old is going to be attracted to the idea of having all of that especially if they come from a poor or unstable background. A girl with stability or whose parents at least provide well for her isn’t going to give the time of day to a dumpy guy like that because they aren’t in need of anything.
