It's all fun and games until the rep 70 kensei only does top heavies and dodge attacks. I guess if you don't think about what you're doing you can't be read
It's very, VERY difficult to not subconsciously form a pattern and be truly random. But I do agree that trying to mindgame someone who's playing mindlessly is impossible. If you truly want to be unpredictable, have a list of mixup options and have someone roll a die or something to randomly determine them and tell you the result. An absolute 200 IQ play in order to play like you have an amount of brain cells equal to the number that comes after four.
"Up until the certain skill level, you can just press the light attack repeatedly. Then, all of the sudden, you face the players that shut you down completely, meaning, you need to change your whole approach to the game." - although said with different intention, this pretty much sums up the whole problem players keep arguing about since the CCU. Think about it. You cannot properly play and enjoy this game if you don't have high enough skill to block. Before CCU, this wasn't a big problem since most players were able to do it without excessive training. 10-15 reps and you're good to go, now start to learn other aspects of the game if you want to become a Decent player. But now you have to put a lot of work to just get pass the bare minimum. Lets say you know about frame adv and can use it effectively. That means that unless the opponent have any form of dodge attack (or full-block), you can continuously attack and kill any player with little to no effort until they are skilled enough to block (or even better, parry) lights. Basically, this means that before you'll be able to play and enjoy the actual read-based game, both you and your opponent must first train hard enough to get a good Reaction. If you don't have it, you'll be beaten as soon as enemy applies lightspam, which feels unfair and frustrating. If your opponents don't have it, you'll be able to beat anyone as soon as you apply lightspam, which feels unfair and boring. Overall, I'm trying to say that currently, the game is Reaction-based first and Read-based second, now even more than before, that is why people complain and that is why so many people stopped playing.
I thought the whole point of it was to make lights not a free parry, they are supposed to be unreactable or at least very hardly reactable. You don’t need to necessarily react to them, you can also guess the direction they are coming from, dodge on prediction of light to avoid them, if one gets through you can dodge if you think another light is coming. Lights are now viable openers and not a free parry, although they will be punished if used too much, this makes turtling unconvenient and brings the game towards a more offensive direction, which is good. Yeah getting hit by lights is frustrating, especially with how much Ubi is sparing on the animations of new heroes, and I can’t parry or block them as much as I did before. However, this makes the game more healthy and it’s almost impossible that it will always be your opponent’s turn to attack, therefore allowing you to use your own offense, if you try to turtle you will be punished, that’s how that works. What I really think the game needs is to modernize its tutorials to reflect its actual condition and to inform and instruct the new players on all the tools and core mechanics they can use.
@@cormoranoimperatore8413 with certain characters (gryffin👀) they finish up their “turn” so you get frame advantage but then they just dodge heavy back into their combo every time you get the frame advantage. So a lot of times you wind up just standing there trying to bait them out while they lightspam and dodge spam you and it’s just a weird awkward guessing game that you wind up losing. I’m not a fan of that.
@@michaeldanchez9530 I agree that it's pretty boring that way, I hate waiting for heroes to dodge attack just so that I can parry to get a very low punish.
Just as an honorable mention: you kind of covered it, but I think I would say putting a rep or two into characters helps you deal with their offence. Making that character your main for a while has some pretty solid advantages. You learn their moveset, and what moves they want to be doing as well as get to see how people try and counter it. You don't necessarily have to go chat on forums about it, you can play - let's just say goki - and watch how people react to your attacks and mixup. If something is hard for you to deal with (in goki's case, a fast bash) then you can usually assume others also have a hard time, which can be applied to your offence against said character.
I would also advise that if you face an opponent you seemingly can’t get a read on, try to get yourself into the mindset that “There is a pattern this player has that I have not found yet” instead of “ This player is completely unpredictable and random”. The former mindset should give your mind a sense of ease knowing there is a solution to dealing with your opponent than the latter.
The main problem I have with making reads is not actually making the read but being able to be successfully give myself a good outcome is the problem, I can predict what my enemy will do but am not able to execute a counter move

Reads are guesswork, but its educated guesswork. Informed by your own experience playing as or against the opponents hero, as well as your opponents behavior. It can be based of off the most common actions from the wider community as well, something nearly everyone does amd not just the single opponent you are facing.

I recommend everyone to try out Highlander. He has very delicate moveset where you are not giving your opponent much time to think...I myself have over 40 reps on him. It was a little bit hard from the beggining but I was determined, played some heavy metal music and just slapped some people with a Claymore.

Absolutely stunning video man I never comment on videos or anything but the way you broke everything down it was really easy to follow along and provide insight great work!
Ok so what can I do to stop myself from just absolutely smashing rb when I’m intending to hit em with one light cause that’s my issue and that messes with feinting
well, force yourself to only press buttons once. Go into a match and set your goal to not press buttons multiple times. Over time you will learn the correct timing when to input certain things. It might cost you some matches in the beginning, but who cares about that. It's about getting better and once you have those moments of "yeah I did that properly", you'll hopefully also have more fun. Good luck man!
With pk its amazing how many full zones you can land just because people will read for a dagger cancel/hard faint, i've landed 3 full zones on the same kensai
In order to read nother player you need to assume he knows what he's doing and not smashing random buttons, or as i call it, the gaming style of 90% of FH players.
Well random button smashing is probably a great deal more reactable and less effective, and it's not always about an attack just being too fast to react to, reading animations already exist making many attacks "semi-reactable". It's more than just guesswork.
One of the best ways to get said knowledge is to play with every hero even if it’s just training and tactics. If your having a hard time, play the character a little bit to know how they are supposed to play and get to know their move set.
I'm current on your videos but came back to this one today because it was about reads -- and this is not simply because of the focus on writing in my channel; it more because you've got a great technically clear approach to communicating your points -- so my question is basically are you actually a reader (of books)? And if so, do you have recommendations? Also, if you happen to write, don't hesitate to drop something creative on my channel. I've supported you from the start for all you've done for our community, Freeze and thank you again!
I’ve found my self saying my opponents moves outloud to myself as they do them when I’m playing alone. It makes me pay more attention to them and recognize the patterns
I've been playing this game for a long time now and the CCU really threw me for a loop. I'm one of those stubborn people I suppose that's been keeping trying to react, and it's a bit upsetting not doing as well as I used to, but really - this video was a BIG help. Thanks Freeze.
I used to have this down to a ridiculous degree. I could see a character and instantly know every single option they use. I never did more than parry on red if I knew a light was coming and countered mixups as hard as possible. I could even somewhat read bash patters. Any time I started a match I'd usually parry their first move then I'd just read every option after that. I did it to just about every single player I faced and I was doing it on console too before the CCU. But then i started factory work and I was too dead to play video games in general for over a month. I only kept a semblance of natural ability in smash. Still trying to get that sharpened game sense back in For Honor.
Honestly I had a similar thing, I couldn't consistently react to 500ms bashes but I could consistently parry lights going off animation. I was one of many people who thrived on the defensive meta and although the game got a lot harder, it was for the best and it feels waaaay better to play in a more offensive meta. I think some ppl just started struggling and blamed the ccu rather than adapting.
@@wizardswine indeed. I think the game is doing great tho. The community just has issues with a lot of changes because they force the player to think more than react.
B- but frieza Reading IS guessing right? Now because of the ccu I cannot get my orochi defect montage 😡 this dead game is making me actually have to predict and work for my defects And yes what about my 47th chromosome?
My main problem is not knowing if their going to let it fly or feint it to gb. So when i think their gonna let it fly, i either dodge attack or parry it but that ends up being a gb. And when i think their gonna feint it to gb, they let it fly.
Hmmmm I wonder which direction this orochi will throw is unreactable light or unreactable dash heavy (console player, wouldn't have complained before the CCU)
1. Orochi's dash heavy isn't even unreactable. 2. The direction people throw their attacks is almost always patterned, especially lights because they have less time to consciously choose. 3. Even if you make a wrong read for light direction, you have a 1 in 3 chance of parrying by pure chance. All light parry punishes in the game do more than the damage of 2 Orochi lights so you'll come out ahead even if you parry randomly as long as all they're doing is light spamming. The fact you're complaining about Orochi of all characters proves you need to think about this more.
Opera GX is great! I've been using it for about a year? The limiter features are awesome and the upcoming games page is great for staying in the know about upcoming titles, sales and free games! I didn't need to make a read on that one, it's just good.
In the lower Ranks it was really funny to play JJ, first your enemy doesn't want to parry, so you spam unblockables and the second time you meet them, they want to parry you but you just faint and use the op parry conter

Hey i just wanna say thank you because ive been an ignorant console pleb who didnt wanna learn but these are helping a lot and im over rep 100. thank you
I'm struggling when people get into their offence. You talking about using a heavy feint to gauge their defensive preference, what would you recommend doing to understand their offensive play style? Should I just block and dodge when I have to... or is it better to go for a counter attack to start off, and adapt if I'm unsuccessful?
Best read and the most powerful by far is the "Oh I know these A-Holes, they're tryhards, let's just pull out." Obviously the best read you can ever make!
I had reads before the update... now I can’t do it at all... I wanted to watch to see if this could help me, after 2 months of trying this, it still doesn’t feel satisfying or fun. I’m much more of a guy who plays on reaction rather than relying on prediction so now the game constantly feels against me. At least before the update I could still do both with some balance. Not now? No...
A friend of mine complained about Gladiator's skewer. I said that Gladiator's skewer should have Hyper Armor to prevent lights completely shutting down the mixup. They complained about how "Op" the skewer is. Remarking "It's just like Shugoki's hug." "Yes, it is. Except Shugoki's hug is easily countered. You know this same problem is with ANY character with an unblockable, right?" "Bruh you're small brain Shugoki is OP."
Here at 0:26 You'd be surprised at how active the dark souls pvp community still is, especially around the third title! I personally came from the ds3 pvp community, not that anyone cares, just thought I'd give a little fun fact
Usually my approach to making reads is not nearly as sophisticated or perhaps soundproof as yours. My approach usually involves observing what moves my opponent favors, then adjusting accordingly. I am aware that if they decide to change tactics, I'm kinda screwed. But, the instances where they don't adapt, I outplay them completely.
one of the biggest reads I inadvertently give people is my use is Centurion's charge heavy. i played ranked a fair bit (mostly for rewards) and everytime it's just a free parry for them. bad habits die hard
Its not, I play on console and can confirm its not because if you use this method it works on either platform. Stop assuming all console players think its impossible.
I'll never forget the day I was in a brawl with my friend, and it was 2-2 and he died and I was one hit away from death, and the JJ and the raider decided they were gonna do real 2v2 last minute for the win and I end up killing the raider and the JJ did his dodge attack and my galaxy brain parried the light attack switch and fuckin blasted him. It was so satisfying. It was on console, too, so it was 100% a perfect read
This argument is why I think so many people think Nuxia is bad. she is a hero based COMPLETELY on reads, but it wasn't as much of a topic back when she was released, so people automatically assumed she is bad. Imagine my surprise when I tried her out and just started bodying people. so I guess in summary, whiny players who think its all guessing need to learn the damn game.
@@jevontewashington7409 1. she throws out light attacks, conditioning you to block them, allowing her to get you with her traps. 2. If she thinks you are going to try and parry her lights, she commits the heavies, same if you move your guard trying to avoid the traps. 3. If she thinks you are going to dodge out of range of the heavies and traps, she can cancel heavy into guardbreak. 4. If she thinks you are going to roll away, she can catch you with her leaping attack. she is NOTHING but reads! That's why she can be completely shut down by players who know what she can do and make the appropriate predictions while she stomps the lower levels.
@@sawkman2092 umm people get hit with traps because of the fear of moving their guard to a different side and getting hit with a raw heavy not because you are throwing lights with nuxia and literally you just said throughout that entire comment that if you THINK someone is going to do something you do this instead that’s not reading your opponents at all lol reading your opponent would be like if you throw 2 raw heavies with nuxia and your opponent blocks them then you throw a trap as your third heavy because he just blocked 2 raw heavies in a row and yeah I agree she actually is really good character tho
@@jevontewashington7409 The reason you would think someone is going to do something is because you make a prediction based on their behaviour/patterns, ie a READ. when people fight Nuxia, they usually don't let her move through her chain, they try to attack through her traps, dodge out of range or guardbreak her because they think she is going to do a trap, that's a read. Only new players or those out of stam try to block only.
@@sawkman2092 well since a prediction is literally the same thing as a guess if you are predicting that someone will do something you are guessing lol and many people try to attack you before her trap or heavy lands because they are trying to interrupt the combo so they don’t have to deal with guessing whether or not it’s a trap, y’all be confusing reading with guessing sometimes, a correct guess is different from reading your opponent
Freeze I love your vids dude and love the logic you bring to a lot of your vids but I have a question I play on console and I understand the CCU was made to improve the game but in fighting games or in fighting in general isn’t being able to react to whatever happens in tht quick second a part of fighting I feel FH has stepped away from that just my opinion I think making reads is just a guess and if you guess wrong you get punished for it
Id like to think im a decent reader but unfortunately due to the CCU on PS4... Im scared to even attempt punishment parries anymore. Like before the CCU i just found the confidence to parry lights now I cant parry anything because its too fast lol.
My issue with all of this is, I can't think fast enough to make critical decisions such as the raider ledge scenario, and I can't learn fast enough to notice patterns unless they're a literal potato, on top of the fact that I forget faster than I learn so for me, reads are always a guess.
The read based gameplay makes it much more satisfying, as you said. Nothing feels better than conditioning your opponent to a particular option and then mixing it up and watching them crumble.
Here’s a tip, if you can’t read their mind read their pattern, and find his comfort. I do a thing I call point prediction, instead of predicting and entire combo I predict the first move, say a War momma likes light, light, bash. Most likely I will get hit by the first light and that’s okay as long as I get the second.
Im not gonna lie i recently got back into the game and was wondering why i wasnt able to react to "light spam" with parries etc now i like the turn of things, i just think a few more hero adjustments are needed to make the game feel like whatever you pick is viable as long as youre skilled
If you guys think reads dont exist its simply not true. If I say kensei many of you immediately expect side dodging. Or always blocking top when you are distant from a warden. These are very simple examples of how we all use reads. The key to getting better is learning how to utilize them
Honestly my biggest problem isn't reads, but properly reacting. Like I'll be fairly certain a berserker or shaman is feinting into a light/stab, but I can't react to it. Or I'll know a good zone option select is coming and I still eat it trying to parry it. I've always been kinda shit at reactionary games though.

The way I see it, there are two types of reads: character reads and player reads. Character reads come from your knowledge of a character's kit. Character reads are the base level of reads that don't change (unless a character is reworked) and is learned through playing the game. Character reads are the *potential* moves that a character may do. Player reads, on the other hand, are made against every opponent you play against in the moment. This is recognizing the patterns that an opponent makes. Player reads take the potential moves and narrows it down to what is *likely* to be used. Think of it like this: character reads teach you that moves X, Y, and Z may be thrown, and player reads teach you that your current opponent often throws Z and sometimes X. To an experienced player who knows the character, they would be prepared for X, Y, or Z when the fight begins. They would then notice their opponent's attack pattern and be able to predict and counter it every time it occurs forcing the opponent to either switch it up or get destroyed. For an inexperienced player who isn't familiar with every character's moveset, they wouldn't know that X, Y, or Z exists until they encounter them during their fight. They could then still recognize and counter the opponent's patterns of X and Z, but as soon as the opponent switches it up and throws Y, the player will have no idea what's coming. TLDR, character reads are all the potential attacks and mix-ups that character's have in their moveset, and player reads are the attacks that are likey to happen based on the opponent's attack patterns. Character reading is a base understanding that is learned through playing the game over time while player reading is done in every engagement and can be done by anybody, but player reading without character reading has its own disadvantages when the opponent starts switching things up.
Guess/reads is a random selection of options if you do not know your enemy. And the better offense in this situation, is random offence, because in a random atack there are not patrons to read. So, learn your character learn all his mixups and offenses, and use them unbrained, absolutly random. And for your defend, you need to know your enemy, known your posibilities, and throw the coin to choose one opcion. And yes, this is absolutly a fighting game, is so boring to still hear people telling FH is not a FG.
Bear in mind reads count for moves that are "semi-reactable" like most 500ms lights, you CAN react but not consistently, and when you do you often can't tell if it's a light or heavy so you can choose to read and take a risk. Also the same for moves with several reactable components that combined make it unreactable, which involves reading subtle animations as well as taking a guess.

Sorry for text wall, just wanted to say it's healthy to try other characters, especially if one character is giving you trouble over and over.

Reads are guesswork, but its educated guesswork. Informed by your own experience playing as or against the opponents hero, as well as your opponents behavior. It can be based of off the most common actions from the wider community as well, something nearly everyone does amd not just the single opponent you are facing.
The fact the word “guess” is involved is the real problem though.

Ironically, I'm in the middle of language arts right now
Ok so what can I do to stop myself from just absolutely smashing rb when I’m intending to hit em with one light cause that’s my issue and that messes with feinting
well, force yourself to only press buttons once.
Games like dark souls
I still remember your ds3 guides
In order to read nother player you need to assume he knows what he's doing and not smashing random buttons, or as i call it, the gaming style of 90% of FH players.
If your opponent is shugoki (aka smash buttons to win), you can easily read 100% of them
Alt+F4 and you won👌🏻

Honestly, ever since I embraced the idea of making reads I’ve gotten more light parries than I ever did before the CCU
git gud scrub

And yes what about my 47th chromosome?
OBVIOUSLY the best/most clear title would be something like "For Honor: How to make better reads" or "How to get better at making reads"
The fact you're complaining about Orochi of all characters proves you need to think about this more.
im supper new to the game and i keep gtting light spam idk how to get out of it its like im stuned and cant do nothion

They complained about how "Op" the skewer is. Remarking "It's just like Shugoki's hug."
"Yes, it is. Except Shugoki's hug is easily countered. You know this same problem is with ANY character with an unblockable, right?"
"Bruh you're small brain Shugoki is OP."

I would check out that Reddit post, but it wants me to download the app and won't let me browse the page.

If she thinks you are going to dodge out of range of the heavies and traps, she can cancel heavy into guardbreak. 4.

Still fighting the good fight of trying to make a large portion of the community activate their brain I see.
