    This is an impressive bluewater sailboat that is currently for sale for $48,000. Canadian Ken and I had to go check her out - she is about an hour away up in Winterport, ME, along the Penobscot River, an hour's sail to the open bay. She's hull #1 of the venerable Southern Cross 39 sailboats, designed by Thomas Gillmer (designer of the Allied Seawind Ketch, the 1st fiberglass sailboat to circumnavigate the globe!), and built by C.E. Ryder down in Rhode Island in 1981. She was factory finished, which is nice as many of these were sold as kits. She also has an Airex cored hull, a relatively new method at the time, perfected by C.E Ryder (it's closed cell Airex), deemed to be very strong and durable. The decks are balsa cored.
    This Southern Cross 39 is not perfect. She needs some work, but it appears to be mostly cosmetic and the pricing reflects this. These boats usually sell for much, much more - at least double this asking price. So, if you're a DIY sailor looking for a boat that needs a little TLC - but could probably take you around the world as is - this boat might be for you! She is stored indoors and is broker represented by John Wilkinson. He can be reached at:

    Wow, I have hull number 3. also for sale on the hard in Indonesia. So different from mine. Odd doesn't seem to have had many upgrades. Interesting it was never Blue Water cruised. They are a great all weather cruiser and not at all heavy displacement. The sail great in light winds, handle serious weather like few others. Definitely far more quality than your standard Coastal Cruiser. 30,000 miles of cruising tells the real story....

      Very cool! Yes, from what we could tell, she looks pretty original and has spent most of her life in Maine waters, with the exception of her time down in Long Island Sound. I hope yours finds a new home, too! They are very cool boats. Thanks for watching!

    I like it. Reminds me of a Pacific Seacraft 40. Similar capabilities and similar hybrid fin keel ,full keel skeg hung rudder thingy. Also a 39 ft its a lot of boat. If you can get her in the thirties somewhere, and she doesnt need too much, great deal. I would do what most of us do, sail her and restore as you go. Thanks for checking these boats out for us.

    Very neat old boat. As my wife and I are approaching retirement, we are looking more and more at boats of this size. I would say that she most likely would need all new rigging, and a motor and trans overhaul, and very possibly new sails, maybe not right away. With an electronics upgrade, refrigeration, and dodger and bimini, I guess that would be another 50k with doing some labor myself. Engine access looks tight for me as well. I hope she gets an owner who will restore her, she is definitely a worthy candidate. I think I would lean towards a newer boat , maybe in the 150k range, when the time comes for us. Thanks for doing the video.

    • @boatfools
      @boatfools  5 месяцев назад

      She's definitely a candidate for someone with DIY capabilities and interests. Engine is fine, sails are lightly used (summers only), has a dodger, would benefit from a bimini, and could use some updating as you say. Not for the faint of heart but, as you say, I hope someone out there is up to the task to get her out sailing again! Thanks for watching!

    This is a charming boat, a solid boat. For coastal cruising in New England, great. Its dream would be to get adopted by a young DIY couple with cruising dreams who will bring it up to speed. It's likely that the engine might be fine with a little TLC. However, water ingress repairs, painting, more substantial dodger, radar and electronics package, refrigeration, standing rigging, solar, arch... To prep this for world cruising will require time and probably 60 to 100k. Completely done up, given the age, one might be able to get 110 for it. Conclusion--it's overpriced, unless buyers intend only to use it locally, seasonally. For kids looks for a cruising boat who are told, "Well, that's what these boats go for," just walk away. The tanks in the keel--nice for stability, but does the shower sump go to the bilge? What's happening under those tanks? Was the boat funky? Also, hull coring--any delamination?Thank you for posting. enjoyed the tour.

    • @boatfools
      @boatfools  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your comments! Remember, it's a buyer's market - no one will pay full asking for this boat or any used boat (or at least they shouldn't!). Yes - ideal for coastal cruising but with the potential for more. Don't quote me on the shower, but I believe it has its own bilge & pump. Boat was definitely not funky - no odors, which is weird because most older boats do have a distinct smell. It was also very cold so that may have helped! Hopefully under those water tanks is a nice hunk of lead... :) IMO, this boat should sell in the low 30s. But that's just my opinion. The hull: It seemed great. No evidence of delamination - the topsides were as smooth as could be. No blistering, nada. Airex cored, when done well, works - especially if the thru-hulls were done at the factory - and this was factory finished (exclusive of any modifications that maybe happened later). But there was nothing overt or obvious happening. The decks are balsa cored like 99% of all boats of this vintage. Definitely would want a survey and a moisture meter. Frankly, since she's indoors, if the yard allowed it, one could get crackin' on this boat by late Feb and be ready to go come summer. Get out there, use it, shake it down, and see what's what. And, agreed, a young DIY couple would be ideal. That counts me out!

    I liked the layout of the boat ... pilot berth in particular ... but the engine access looked dreadful!!! Calling it a diamond in the rough appears to be a optimistic assessment -- from what i saw there was half a summer of work needed just on the topside (both port and starboard lazarettes (rotted / damaged) , propane locker door (rot visible), anchor locker (heavy clean & new longer chain), topside (clean, repair (crazing), and paint), port-light and hatchway replacements / re-bedding, bright work, swapping out the winches (for self-tailing). Then below ... repairs around the port-lights, sole refinish, cold plate addition, head repair / refurbish, instrumentation / communication upgrades (looked very dated), electrical upgrades as well -- no sign of battery banks. A Blue Water boat needs certain amenities to go "blue water sailing", which will cost $ to add. You would really need to get this boat at a bargain price to offset the costs for the repairs and upgrades -- even more if you soda blast and repaint barrier coat!!

    • @boatfools
      @boatfools  5 месяцев назад

      Agreed but a number of the items you listed are not on the a A-list of things to do. The primary winches are self-tailing, the sole floors are fine, ports/hatches all fine. A good scrub and she would look a lot better. But, there is a lot to be done, but a lot that could be done over time.

    • @robertscholz4486
      @robertscholz4486 5 месяцев назад

      True, some of the things could be done over time, but if it were to be used as designed ... as a blue water boat ... i think all of these things would need to be addressed before taking any major journey. Nice boat by design, but not one that i would be willing to sink the cash into -- I've like many of the others that you have highlighted much more!!! Keep up the great work!!!@@boatfools

    $48,000 for a 1981 boat that needs a lot of work? I hate to be a Debbie-downer but you can buy 2000's that need some work and you have a 20 year newer boat. There is a number but I am thinking half of that. Used saiboats of that age would need all new standing rigging, engine rebuild. The list would go on, you would need another $20,000 plus a lot of time to do it yourself.
