Accents are so good at doing that. Just like Davenport’s Mid-Atlantic or New England accent is great for conveying a condescending tone until he warms up to Jack. Which is funny because Daniel Davis is from Arkansas!

I love that scene in this movie, when a Torpedo that has been released by the U. S., is heading straight for the Red October, gets to within 300 Yards...and a mysterious (at least, at first!), finger pushes the red detonator button, causing it to explode before it hits the Red October. Then, the camera pans up, and we see that it was Admiral Grier, that pushed the button! He then looks at the officer, and tells him:"Tell that you heard the Torpedo strike the side of the Red October... and I was never here"! It was, of course, a lie...but sometimes ya just gotta out-fox the fox (If you know what I mean)!
I watched a documentary about the film. When actors found out Sean Connery was in the film, a whole lot of superb actors wanted a part. These guys are examples of high caliber acting. That was probably a big reason why I loved the film so much.

There are few actors that had the natural swagger and confidence on screen of Fred Thompson. No matter what the role, I always felt like I was seeing the man just like I would if I were sitting with him in his own living room. That is NOT easy to pull off on a movie set with so many people and cameras around. I wish Fred had a bigger role in Hunt For Red October.

Daniel Davis is so good looking. He does such a great accent that I had no idea at the time I met him back in the early 90s that he was actually born in Arkansas. My mom told me after we met him and walked away that I was blushing like crazy. She said, "Liking older men is ok I guess but he's about 30 years older than you." lol
I wish this movie was done as a mini-series with maybe 6-10 episodes. The book is big and there are several notable events that the movie didn't have any time to cover. One example was the traitor on Red October actually spoke English in the book. He may have worked for either KGB or GRU and Ryan tried to offer him assylum in return for his surrender but he chose to die for the "rodina" instead. Ryan was horrified by how young the spy was and was so disgusted that they would recruit basically a teenager for a death mission that he vomited after shooting him. There is also a scene in the book where they track down the ICBM that he tried to blow up and because Ramius got shot, he instructed Ryan on how to disarm it and then they fired it, letting it go up a few hundred feet before splashing down into the ocean. It sank to the bottom and was left to rot. Having read the novel, Stellan Skarsgard played the enemy sub commander perfectly. He was exactly the way I would have expected Tupolev to be: arrogant and so determined to hit Red October that he forgot about his own torpedo and got blown up by it!
Honestly, I believe the best book is Tom Clancy's "other" classic: Red storm rising. True, it's a monstrously huge book but at the time, the implications were pretty scary to think about. Rumor has it that he was driven to the White House for a meeting with Pres. Reagan because several military people wanted to know how he could know small details about Soviet submarines. One example from the novel "The Hunt for Red October" was the submarine Politovsky, which sank when a titanium part broke off and was accidentally sent to the reactor. This set of a series of catastrophic failures that resulted in the loss of the sub and all on board.
'K-19 The Widowmaker' is solid stuff. I'll watch anything Kathryn Bigelow does. Don't look down on 'Hunter Killer'. There are great sub scenes in that movie. Another great and unheralded movie is the submarine haunted 'Below'.

Somehow, Jack Ryan guessed what Ramius's true intentions were, and, after going days without sleep, and going through the torments that he went through to save Ramius, he was finally rewarded with the successful defection of Ramius...and some much-deserved sleep!

Baldwin made a good Ryan for this movie, but I don't know how good he would have done in the other 2 and Harrison Ford did well in the other 2 but I don't know how well he would have done in this one.
I supported Fred Thompson during his short run for the Presidential Nomination in 2008. He would have made a better President than either Obama or McCain. The man was a straight thinker.
Naval commanders would not be bothered by a CIA guy wearing a uniform. Civilian attire would be noticed. Full commander might be a little high ranking to keep a low profile though.

yes they do. I spent the summer of my third year with the First Armored Division in Bamberg Germany in 1985. I did all kinds of wild shit near the border (which doesn't exist anymore). Graduated USMA 1987. Loved this movie too back then. RIP Fred.

Baldwin made a good Ryan for this movie, but I don't know how good he would have done in the other 2 and Harrison Ford did well in the other 2 but I don't know how well he would have done in this one.
I supported Fred Thompson during his short run for the Presidential Nomination in 2008. He would have made a better President than either Obama or McCain. The man was a straight thinker.

Naval commanders would not be bothered by a CIA guy wearing a uniform. Civilian attire would be noticed. Full commander might be a little high ranking to keep a low profile though.

Do they do military type training during their time at the Academy? Not being sarcastic, genuinely asking. I know they have a five year commitment to active duty after the Academy.
yes they do. I spent the summer of my third year with the First Armored Division in Bamberg Germany in 1985. I did all kinds of wild shit near the border (which doesn't exist anymore). Graduated USMA 1987. Loved this movie too back then. RIP Fred.
@@bhpalmer Thanks for that answer. My brother was stationed in Germany from 88-90 (or 91, but then went to Iraq for GW1). Hope whatever path you've chosen (staying in or back in civilian life) has led to success and fulfillment.
