Radoslav komar True. But while the Akula is going away, the Ohios are not. And the first flight of those have been changed over to a SSGN configuration. So, despite the unearned jump in technology in the Russian fleet, they are still playing catch up to where the West is today. The boats that give me pause are the UK, German, and Swedish AIP boats. Just as the director intended, when you get an idea of the sheer size of the Red October, it reminds me of the appearance of the Star Destroyer at the beginning of Star Wars, and accompanied by the amazing music, slightly more majestic and goosebumpy. The first time I saw this scene, my jaw dropped and my senses felt like they'd just been buggered by a large telegraph pole. Nice one, Mr. McTiernan...
Not only that, but just when you get an idea of how big a Star Destroyer was, suddenly, in ESB, they bring out the SSD, which makes the standard SDs look like tug boats in comparison to a carrier ...
And whats even more nuts...is that the giant mock up we see Connery and Neil riding in this scene isnt even as big as a real Typhoon/Akula....which were nearly twice this size 😳
RIP Sean Connery - Every Captain will one day leave his ship/ boat - - Every Agent (007) will one day finish his duty - - Every monk will one day join God -

Brandon Tseng After that whole Antichrist business didn't work out for him, he defected to the USSR until the downfall from trying to bring about the apocalypse blew over, and defected back to the US and became a paleontologist.
Yep. The first minute of the Red October theme is fantastic. Then it switches to that high pitched singing and shatters the mood established in the first minute. A real shame. It's like they smashed three or four different pieces of music together.
The Hunt For Red October was fairly amazing for another reason not mentioned here. It portrayed the Russians as a formal and dignified adversary. It eschewed the easy black-white dichotomy of America Good, Russia Bad, instead providing a deeper and richer palette from which to develop characters, plot, and drama. Really, this was a great movie made well. I'd be surprised if it fails to withstand the test of time.
+unknown unknown that sub called "Akula" means "Shark" the Typhoon Class, the biggest and most powerful sub ever, 6 of them were made and only 2 of them are still in action
Jarosław Klimentowski Typhoon is a NATO name for Akula class, do your homework properly. And i'm a native Russian\Ukrainian speaker and Typhoon translate's as a Tayfoon in Russian\Ukraine aswell, Akula means Shark and Dolphin translates as Delfin
+Jarosław Klimentowski Khakonov is absolutely right. The missile sub Russians call "Akula" (shark) has the NATO reporting name "Typhoon", while the hunter-killer sub Russians call " Shchuka" (pike, a freshwater predator fish) has the NATO reporting name "Akula".

I was literally sat here thinking how the hell did they do that shot given they obviously didn't have access to a typhoon class at the height of the cold war to film on, very well done. Thank you.
No. It's not even close to the full-scale. The actual thing is 10 times larger, even larger than WW2-era Aircraft Carriers. So large that the real Typhoon-class submarine could easily flip the entire mock-up and those auxillery ships nearby with it's sheer size alone.
Whenever anyone says it's a cold morning i usually respond with "And hard". If they understand the reference it is a good thing. If they don't, they think i'm a pervert....
Basil Poledaris' music score is absolutely incredible. The performances, effects, & screenplay are outstanding. Director John McTiernan was at the top of his game here.
I love how, in movies where the main characters are foreigner, they start speaking a few sentences in the native language to switch to English right away like nobody will notice.
An equally good sub movie in my opinion is "Das Boot"(The Boat), which depicts the mission of a World War Two German U Boat. In this movie one sees quickly the danger of these missions and the Spartan living conditions in these WW2 subs.
There was this one occasion, I was looking at some map and Murmansk caught my eye. And I thought to myself, "So, that's where The Hunt for Red October kicks off."

The best movie ever made: The Gladiator :)

Why , the whole movie is one big bias!?
@@ementalerlynx4727 Gladiator was great, but to an 18 year old boy this movie was 'rocket fuel'! My friends and I saw it three times at the theater..
До свидания (Dasvidanya - Farewell) Capt. Marko Ramius /Sean Connery
R.I.P
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
He is lithuanian not russian
"Lischen to my authentick Russchen ackschent" - Connery
....he plays Lithuanian captain of the Soviet Navy.
Lithuanian.
Makes a bit of sense though. Ramius is Lithuanian, not Russian, so he'd have a bit of an accent.
Yeah, a bit Scottish :P
Justin Quotidian Don’t forget that this is the actor that played an Arab with a Scottish accent in the “the wind and the lion”. And made you go “yeah all Arabs sound like that”.
When your Mom asks you what you want for dinner:
“Give me a pizza Mom, one pizza only please”
...*pleash."
The special effects department built a superstructure on a barge, and this is what you see in the opening scene. It passes very favorably for a Typhoon Class. The tending ships were dressed up to look like Soviet Navy. The beautiful snow covered background was filmed in Alaska. Not bad at all, and no CGE.
That is amazing..
@Alan High you know what happened to the dressed up submarine
And as big as the prop was...the real life Typhoons were even bigger 😳
@@thompsona1232 They dismantled it and tossed the parts into a vacant lot in the Port of LA. The two barges were pretty much destroyed and had to be scrapped.
The barge was built to be semi-submersible for the diving scenes. Not everyone got the word and they lost a $60,000 camera into LA harbor during filming.
1:21 It´s time captain. It´s time. Rip Legend.
Time indeed
Btw that might be a quote from the famous battle scene in Eizenstejn’s “Alexandr Nevsky”
Пора, товарищ капитан
my father-in-law is Russian who worked at 80s with nuclear submarines. He found about 932 faults in this movie but loved every second. And Rip Sean Connery. :(
Out of those 932, which one was the biggest.
Pretty much par for the course when Hollywood tries to do military films. Lots of authenticity sacrificed in the name of added entertainment
@@razorfett147 Yeah but, when a movie is so good as Hunt for Red October, it doesn't really matters that much
Yeah but it's like Red Dawn. Everything about the movie is so completely wrong in every single way but it's still fantastic.
Wow, If he eliminates all the mistakes, than we already can build a magnetohydrodynamically powered submarine. The next research area for him to analyze schould be "Star Trek". For sure he worked too close to the reactor section :)
This is one of my favourite film openings ever, it sets the mood for the rest of the film so well. This film in general is definitely in my top ten.
RIP Sean Connery
- Every Captain will one day leave his ship/ boat -

Heh! One cannot read that anyway else than in his voice…
Rest in peace beautiful Sean Connery the best filmactor in all time🕯🕯🌷🌷❤❤Thank you for all your films🙏I love "The hunt of red october"❤❤
I have watch this movie so many time, and never get tired of it. This scene and the whole movie is masterpiece. No CGi, good acting, epic music. Best cold war movie
I disagree. The best CW movie is 'The spy who came in from the cold.'
@@neilkeating9753 I am going to watch it then ;)

Hunt for Red October theme still gives goosebumps.
This movie is awesome especially the music with chorus in the background. This is must watch movie for people who haven't seen it
@@MagicianMovies1992 Basil Polidouris is a master of using a mens choir. Much like the liturgical music in orthodox christianity.
I remember waiting in a local mall to see this. All five theatres were playing it and there were lines going to the other end of the mall.
+Del Our local theater was about three months late getting it! I kept looking at the sign, hoping....waiting... Then FINALLY it was there.
That scene used to give me goosebumps :).
I love how he literally turns his back on his home here. Beautiful film work.
This is my favourite John McTiernan film and that’s overcoming some pretty stiff competition.
The paleontologist from Jurassic Park betrayed the US and joined the Soviet Navy : confirmed.
Brandon Tseng After that whole Antichrist business didn't work out for him, he defected to the USSR until the downfall from trying to bring about the apocalypse blew over, and defected back to the US and became a paleontologist.
+Brandon Tseng He wanted to live in Montana and became a paleontologist there.
+Tetsuron later joined nasa. he was last saw boarding the spaceship Event Horizon. His name , and the crew, remain taboo among spacemen.
then he was spotted back at earth among the shapeshifting reptillians, and disguised as obama
joaquim machado
No, that's how he became Damien
Epic opening.
+Ouija1210 You said it!
Yep. The first minute of the Red October theme is fantastic. Then it switches to that high pitched singing and shatters the mood established in the first minute. A real shame. It's like they smashed three or four different pieces of music together.
+LedosKell true. everything except the high pitched singing is good.
The high pitched singing is part of the whole music, as well as the rest of it!
And survived. Thanks.
One of my favorite openings ever. Just superb.
Shuperb, indeed.
That is an enormous submarine, holy fuck!
+unknown unknown that sub called "Akula" means "Shark" the Typhoon Class, the biggest and most powerful sub ever, 6 of them were made and only 2 of them are still in action
+Khakonov UA Akula is not the same as Typhoon. Akula is hunter-killer while Typhoon (in russian dolphin) a boomer.
+Dávid Tóth basically typhoon is a giant mobile underwater nuclear silo and akula is a carrier-killer sub. id say nato codenames are more suiting.
So James Bond switched sides?
+Roy Mustang And then he switches back to west afterwards. Not too sure what's going on in his head
+Emperor Palpatine It's basically the syphilis finally taking its toll.
Maybe he's a triple agent ?
He's just undercover for England. No, I didn't say under the covers!
Interesting that Sam Neill was considered for James Bond.
Came here to see if people were commenting about the news this morning. Yep. God be with the Connerys. Rest In Peace
This was my older brothers favourite scene and movie we used too watch it alot sadly he passed away in 1 year ago and it makes me so sad I rewatch this scene alot because of him i even bought a boston P coat the same one as alex baldwins one in this movie fkn epic
This is how you open a movie. Bad. Ass.
russian style
-Jefrey Pelt: "Mr. Ambassador, you have nearly a hundred naval vessels operating in the North Atlantic right now. Your aircraft has dropped enough sonar buoys so that a man could walk from Greenland to Iceland to Scotland without getting his feet wet. Now, shall we dispense with the bull?"
-Ambassador Lysenko: "You make your point as delicately as ever, Mr. Pelt"
The delivery of those lines is forever etched in my head from regular rewatches of this movie. I loved how the actor played Pelt.
Now Mr Ryan I'm a politician which means when I'm not kissing babies I'm stealing their lollipops.... . It ALSO means I keep my options open ...
One of my favorite lines added for the film
I always remember this dialogue I memorized the wirds.... Walk... Wet
Thank you
Will someone PLEASE post that exchange? It's my favorite part of the whole movie!
The submarine mockup is very impressive. It's a nearly full-scale, above-the-water mockup made from two barges welded together. 👍🏿✅❤️
Wikipedia
Thank you. I didn’t know that
I was literally sat here thinking how the hell did they do that shot given they obviously didn't have access to a typhoon class at the height of the cold war to film on, very well done. Thank you.
No. It's not even close to the full-scale. The actual thing is 10 times larger, even larger than WW2-era Aircraft Carriers. So large that the real Typhoon-class submarine could easily flip the entire mock-up and those auxillery ships nearby with it's sheer size alone.
The Typhoon isn't aa large as a normal fleet carrier, but they are larger than escort carriers and light carriers. And that says something.
Probably the most badass scenes i have saw in my life
F/O-- "It is time, Captain."
Capt--"It is time, time indeed"

Das Boot

Fredrik Hansson The Enemy Below,
An equally good sub movie in my opinion is "Das Boot"(The Boat), which depicts the mission of a World War Two German U Boat. In this movie one sees
quickly the danger of these missions and the Spartan living conditions in these WW2 subs.
There was this one occasion, I was looking at some map and Murmansk caught my eye. And I thought to myself, "So, that's where The Hunt for Red October kicks off."
nice

RIP Sean Connery 😢, legendary actor , you will always be remembered as one of the best in the history of cinema for ever
What a grandiose intro to a not-so-realistic movie. The OST is one of a kind.
"Time indeed" - Sean C gives us a hint of his intentions with just these two simple words. His facial expressions does the rest.
"Time indeed". Then uses a look of (for lack of better terms) patriotism crossed with "You need protecting from yourself"
Qasem Soleimani was great in this movie
braddeicide Sad he is No more
He was a Persian thot
I was thinking the same thing. Imagine Connery acting as Soleimani.
Was a fitting end for a soldier, better to burn out than fade away. Dread aging and having to witness your cognition and memory slowly deteriorate.
LOL
"Red October" is spelled incorrectly in the opening graphic.
It should be Красный Октябрь
It's probably old Russian. They dropped a few letters from the alphabet and changed the language sometime after the October Revolution.
They butchered pronunciation. That's a more important.
I noticed that as well, Октябрь was completely spellt in latin letters: Oktiabr

RIP Sir Sean. A great actor, a man with so much presence. I've always thought: man, if I reach 60 I would like to be as handsome as him at that age. most women liked him more at 60 than when he was much younger
I'm a woman, born about 30 years after Mr. Connery, who has rarely found older men appealing as a romantic partner, but I would always make an exception for him (and Michael Caine) if I had any chance.

I feel so sorry for Captain Ramius watching this. Just by looking at his eyes you can tell how he feels. He loves his country but leaves it because he cannot stand the system ruling it. And the thought that he will never be able to return breaks his heart. He has my sympathy.
Ramius was Lithuanian, most of those guys would sell all the Russians for peanuts
@@astrolillo True, but at the time he could not know when or even if the Soviet Union would ever break down. It must have seemed like saying good-bye to his home for good.
@@astrolillo Ramius had been a sub driver for so long, the area around Polyarnyy and Murmansk _was_ his home. To such an extent that he _had_ one, at least on land. And yes, he knew that was the last time he'd be leaving it. One way or another.
I had this movie on video tape in the 1990s, watched it regularly and it's one of my favorites, I don't care what anyone says.

One of the best fictional captain's. John Milius, who wrote Apocalypse Now penned the "We shail into history" Captain address to the crew which got Connery to sign on to the project.
Well not only he was having a last look at his homeland for what he is about to do. He then snapped out of it when the officer told him it's cold, and he answered "and hard". His expression changed, 1:02 he had internally reaffirmed his decision to defect.
