  • For 16 centuries ancient St.Catherine's monastery has braved the elements in the harsh Sinai mountains, a tiny Christian island in an Islamic sea, where past ages of Byzantine greatness have been preserved in the world's finest icon collection and an library surpassed by the great Vatican Library only. As a monk says: "God's capital on earth must be Sinai, because it is here where he wrote his laws"...This is the place of the Burning Bush, Moses and the Tenm Commandments, the Dance around the Golden Calf and the Ark of the Covenant.

    I spent about a week working with the monks ( in a small way) in 1990, enjoyed it very much, and, although I am not Orthodox, have deep respect and Love for the fathers who live and work there,; I climbed Mount Sinai, on my own, got to the top! All I heard was an invisible radio ( the egyptian guides were all asleep) playing, Elvis singing “mus ich denn, muss i den, zum staetele hinaus, und nun mein Schatz bleibt hier” telling me to return to the World outside... which i did, walking back to Israel (&a bus ride), keeping my fond memories,till today, nearly 72 now, Love God, nothing else is important to me. With Love, John

    My father who is an Orthodox priest visited the Holy Land in 1999, but missed out on visiting St. Catherine's. The monastery just wasn't a part of his tour, for some reason.

    • @James-ol2fr
      @James-ol2fr 2 года назад +6

      @@maryjemyfreeman7639 I don't know the will of God for the Codex, but two things: 1) Its a newer idea to believe that all it takes to be preserved well is to stick a thing behind glass in a climate which is controlled. The monks at Sinai are a part of a LIVING Tradition. The use, veneration, appreciation, love, and care for the holy things there are a part of that. Without that history, no one in the intellectual world would even care about the codex, and yet, it seems too difficult for those who run museums to accept that this is not just an item of antiquity, but is a thing of CURRENT living truth and should perhaps be returned so its use could be fulfilled around the people who pray. This would be different if the monks were just reenacters. Theyre not pretending. I have a hard time believing the British Museum could steal one of the most important texts of the Sentinilese tribe just for its preservation and the western minds curiosity when the tribe is still alive and wanting to use it. 2) St Katherine's currently has a state-of-the-art library. There is no reason the museum could not entrust it to Sinai even if they were afraid for its preservation. The monastery is a world heritage site and the library is considered immensely important from a historical/scientific standpoint.
      Many items have been stolen because of various reasons, lost during wars for instance. It's a controversial thing, of course. Many people believe all of those artifacts should stay in museums. Personally, I believe they should be returned to families and churches when the right lineage is found. We know that Sinai wants the Codex back and that this was its home.
      I hope this was helpful -Kat

      Rafal Omnom they are not idols and they are not worshipped. God and Jesus are the way in Orthodox religion. But we also recognize the saints for their works and Mary for bringing the son of God into our world. You’re confusing worship with their recognition. We believe God and Jesus are the most high. This is the origin of Christianity and they hold the most ancient texts from around Jesus’ time. European kings LATER changed the Bible and teachings, to benefit THEIR own personal desires and needs. Orthodox religion has stayed the same since the dawn of Christianity. Everything is taught the same, always. It takes years to study and practice to become a priest. Other Christians depend on the interpretation of the pastor’s perspective on the scriptures, which is never the same. Even your Christian religion originated here and was later changed. Study your history.

Which is the the most special place in all of Orthodoxy. It's so special, it's special among all these special places. It's the only monastic state in the world, and it's the only place that still maintains Byzantine time.

      They fly a Byzantine flag, but I was wondering what "Byzantine time" was.
      I've never heard of it. Is it GMT-2? Because that's just Greek Time. I think you mean the Julian Calendar instead though, right? The one named after Julius Caesar? Everyone uses the Gregorian Calendar now, because it marks Leap Years better? That is, except for most of the Orthodox Church, they still use the Julian Calendar, that is never, ever called "Byzantine time", ever?
      What were you doing, trying to inform people by misinforming them there? The Orthodox Churches of Jerusalem, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Poland (from 15 June 2014), North Macedonia, Georgia, Ukraine, and the Greek Old Calendarists, of which the Monastery of St Catherine is a part of, all use the Julian Calendar to mark feasts, meaning that Christmas Day is on the 7th January by everyone else's Gregorian Calendar, but that's the 25th of December on the Julian Calendar, or "Roman time" if you find the concept of calendars threatening in some way.
      Except for the Church of Ukraine now, they use the Gregorian calendar since the invasion.

    Recommend beautiful documentary by Philip Gröning"Into Great Silence",monks from 11st..
    Mar Awgin founded a monastery on Mt. Izla above Nisibis in Mesopotamia (~350), and from this monastery the cenobitic tradition spread in Mesopotamia, Persia, Armenia, Georgia and even India and China.
    Mar Saba organized the monks of the Judaean Desert in a monastery close to Bethlehem (483), and this is considered the mother of all monasteries of the Eastern Orthodox churches.[15]
    St. Benedict of Nursia founded the monastery of Monte Cassino in Italy (529), which was the seed of Roman Catholic monasticism in general, and of the order of Benedict in particular.
    St. Bruno of Carthusia, prompted by the spectre of the damnation of the Good Doctor of Paris Cenodoxus, founded a monastery just outside Paris in the 11th Century.
    In both the East and the West, cenobiticism established itself as the primary form of monasticism, with many foundations being richly endowed by rulers and nobles. The excessive acquisition of wealth and property led to several attempts at reform, such as Bernard of Clairvauxin the West and Nilus of Sora in the East.

    • @catherinecarter8987
      @catherinecarter8987 Год назад

      Mar Saba holds the relics of St. John of Damascus, the great saint who secured the Holiness and veneration of Holy Icons, teaching correctly that the veneration of the Holy person in the Icon is not idolatory but veneration in respect of the Saint or Christ therein and likened the Icon to a kind of window through whom the veneration passes.

      They wouldn’t have been able to make any of this without the monks’ permission, and plus places like this make almost all their money from tourism. They wouldn’t be able to persist without it, at this point, especially because religion is becoming less and less prevalent worldwide. And even more rare is religious people who have enough money to travel to these places, and then make a considerable enough donation to actually be useful to the monks. Those buildings are a thousand years old, and need constant restoration and maintenance. Expensive maintenance. The monks allow it, because it is mutually beneficial for them and the tourists. Like the guy says in the video, they consider it everyones monastery and all have equal right to tread there. they regulate it stiffly, but there isn’t really an alternative other than to accept it and take advantage of the benefits it offers, while also mitigating over-intrusion to protect the site and the privacy of the monks. It’s fine, so long as it’s supervised and regulated. And moreso, in a modern world, it has become necessary, so it is tolerated, or even welcomed by many.

      @@kadoj Turism has become a plague and those peaceful places are fully disturbed by its presence. I do not believe they want that. And there are for them still many ways to receive donations to survive.
      Stop massive turism worldwide!!

    Την πανεύφημον νύμφην Χριστού υμνήσωμεν, Αικατερίναν την θείαν και πολιούχον Σινά, την βοήθειαν ημών και αντίληψιν ότι εφίμωσε λαμπρώς, τους κομψούς των ασέβων, του Πνεύματος τη μαχαίρα, και νυν ως Μάρτυς στεφθείσα, αιτείται πάσι το μέγα έλεος.
    Let us praise the all-glorious nymph of Christ, Catherine, the divine and patroness of Sinai, our help and understanding that she brilliantly silenced the elegant ones of the ungodly, the sword of the Spirit, and now as a crowned Martyr, she asks for great mercy.

    Its truly a holy ground. But forgive where do they get their food to eat, water to drink and electricity to light up the entire monastery? It is truly living in a solitude and peaceful life. The Monastery should keep the visitors only in numbers to preserve the holiness of the place.

    The monk should be using special gloves to open books of antiquity. Oil from hands damage them over time. I recently viewed a newly transcribed one and it had been read but never touched. Gloves were always used. The transcriber kept a separate sheet of paper under the hand so as to not touch the paper. Those books look very old. Perhaps someone will transcribe them.

    I would like to know the rules which abides the monks together. Their daily life.. Their admission... The allocation of offices and different responsibilities and its circulation... The constitution of this monastery to know it little more deeper
    Hope some one can help me in this...

      Hi, if you're interested to learn more about Orthodoxy, and how monks live you can look up an Orthodox church that's in your area and contact the priest serving there and he could answer any questions you may have. Also, you could ask the priest where the nearest monastery near you is and ask if it would be possible for you to stay at one. Hope this helps!

      Jesus Castanares We Orthodox do not venerate Catherine of Sienna. This is about St. Catherine of Alexandria whose monastery is in Sinai.
