Growing up I have always been bullied in school. The most common name I as called was a school shooter because I didn't have many friends and was the quiet and shy kid. I went to the administration, talked with them countless times about how bad I was bullied. Of course the admins did nothing to help me and help prevent that... when I was in middle school there as a program called "Rachel's Challenge" which was an anti bullying campaign put in to help students. Yet my school did absolutely nothing to help me... I got really depressed and tried taking my own life.
I am a junior in high school now and things have gotten better.. I don't get bullied anymore and I have friends. But people are scared of me. At first look, people think I am intimidating, and immediately category me, without even getting to know me. I have a really low self esteem, but I always try not to let that phase me.
Long story short, schools need to be aware that things like these really DO happen. The students and everyone else need to start appreciating each other.. all of these bad comments and rumors about someone really does affect them. Greatly.
If you read this and get bullied, please reply to this comment and let's help each other, it sucks not being able to talk to someone about it.

@@sophon238 Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is nothing.
But there are different types of bullies. There are those who only want a reaction, and there are others who need to have a taste of their own medicine.
That said, I do not condone any type of violence towards even those bullies. Truly, likewise, there is nothing "strong" about giving in to temptation and beating someone up. Physical strength is just that: physical.
True strength comes from being able to stand your ground against adversity without sacrificing your beliefs or morals. Therefore, the best way to deal with any type of bully is to stand up for yourself without becoming violent (if possible, but self defense is different that initiating an assault).

Gun laws won’t fix psychology issues.
It all starts from childhood and schools, we need to identify the “clicks” in school and forcefully mix in the kids with other kids on school projects and stuff like that, for example, when u have a class project in school and the teacher says ‘lalright everyone, get into groups of four with your friends “, but not all kids are social and you’ll see the shy nerd kid sitting by himself can’t find a group of friends to pull him in. It angers me that people say the only solution is getting rid of guns all together.
That scares me that they can't actually address the whole problem. It's not only that these kids are commiting heinous acts with guns it's also that these schools did none of the blatant precautions to prevent.
These people will call out for help and they'll make their last attempt to find it, if they're lucky, help will find them, but the one's left in the dark will completely shatter and feel like they have absolutely nothing to lose. When one feels like they're nothing, what is there to lose?
They could easily be prevented and the schools that have them almost always had a sign. I live in an area smack dab in the middle of all these other schools like Columbine and STEM and from what I know, my school does a good job of treating people with respect, seeing signs, talking to people, and getting these people the help they need. During COVID-19, so many things are happening in everyone's lives that depression crowds them. Our school had to revamp their resources into helping these kids with their depression, thoughts, and experiences in the last couple of months but it's becoming ever clear that people fear the dark thoughts in each other's heads. So many dark things happen behind people's stare, so many things are happening back at their home, a lot of people fear that one might break.
I kind of vented a lot here. But these school shootings are preventable in so many ways that medias fail to address. I like William's take that taking that pill to lower that blood pressure is good and all but not as good as starting a diet. This goes for banning firearms, because the real solution really starts with you and your school's response to these students turmoil.

Failure to seize his computer for watching school shooting videos? The Constitution must not matter much to this guy. I am watching his Ted talk about a school shooting right now. So are they going to take my phone? Get a grip. Reporting non crimes to the government? Sounds Orwellian.
Getting involved was a good idea, closer relationships with students is a great idea. Listening to the student and faculty to better understand how it happens and what allows it without getting them in trouble is an excellent idea. In general the people that are closest to the problems know the most.

      1. I’m gonna guess it was a school-provided computer, so it was their right to take it away. If so, then this was a failure on their part. If it was a personal computer, then yes that’s a different story, but not many students can bring a personal computer to school. (At least at any school I’ve ever been to)
      2. I think they meant actual footage of shootings (Like the security cameras at Columbine captured parts of the actual shooting) not videos relating to shootings, like this one.

Does that mean the ministry of Truth should come and visit me?
If you haven't already, I would encourage you to read 1984. Orwell does a much better job than I could of illustrating the means and dangers of thought control and censorship.
Full disclosure: I once had the fact that I am a former soldier used against me as I had the potential to be dangerous. I hadn't committed a crime. Having my service used as a "red flag" disgusted me and turned me off this way of thinking.

Elizabeth Swann - I thought you may had just misinterpreted what he was saying, but I understand your POV now.
And I totally get that the system can mislabel people as threats for silly factors. I had a friend a few months back get called to the school office to talk about some complaints against him - basically he’s a huge gun nerd. Loves guns (Not in a super extreme, “don’t touch my guns” kind of way, just has a passion) Also very passionate about going into the military. So he talks about guns a lot and some people went to the school and talked to them about it. Luckily the staff know he’s not a threat and just has a passion, but it still can be a problem. I do believe that there is more we could be doing for this issue, but you may be right that some ideas may lead to issues with freedom / quick assumptions.
I will look into that book if I have a chance, because it sounds interesting.

I remember my elementary school put me on medication because I had adhd. I immediately didn’t like how the meds were affecting me couldn’t get through to my mother because in her mind schools know more then me I told my sister and she convinced my mom to take me off the drug because she took herself to proof a point the medication was making me ill. Imagine schools having the power to put kids on meds and the parents stupidly allowing this to happen that’s the problem not guns or anger is the schools they put kids on meds simply so they can make more money of that child I say make the school responsible for every shooting it’s not the guns fault the schools are supposed to be educational not for profit I guess we forgot that. Point investigate the schools and punish them for pushing drugs on kids that don’t need them at all. Sadly our politicians just want to ban guns so they’ll use anything to their advantage even the blood of our youth but I guess people are that blind now a days not to see that. Long rant I know but that’s my story I stopped my meds because I knew I didn’t need them my sister was smart enough not to allow the school to repeat the mistake with her son.i was smart enough back then to fight my mom on it and thank god I had my sister to back me up stop giving in to these schools they don’t know more than you.

Schools need to be informed about the home lives of students. A school can have a safe, inclusive, judgement-free and educated climate, but if a student goes home every day to a toxic and unhealthy home with access to weapons, there is still danger present. Several years ago a school shooting occurred at the high school I attended. Except this shooting was done by the school resource officer (also a local police officer) who shot and killed a deranged man who entered the school, following a student who was late getting there. The school immediately went into lock down and the resource officer confronted the man who was armed with guns and intent on using them, in the hallway. She tried at first to diffuse the situation but when she was unable to do so she shot & killed him before he could endanger anyone else. The school was Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, TN. The officers name is Carolyn Gudger, and in my hometown she is a hero. She is the perfect example of what a school resource officer should be. A courageous woman who did her job, putting her life on the line for the students/faculty she was hired to protect. I was very disappointed that there was not a lot of media attention surrounding this incident, except for locally of course. I just really wanted people to see what a difference having a well trained, courageous police officer who takes their promise to protect and serve seriously on campus can make in these situations. I share this story so that the world will learn about this hero that is among us by the name of Carolyn Gudger

My school doesn’t teach me the actual steps on what to do in a real situation so it’s always important to prevent it. It is sad for me for sure, but it is the generation I live in and it’s always good to have my own plan that could function. School shooting is dangerous because it's not a 1v1 violence, shooters use the projectile weapon because they are planning to attack multiple or random people from distance.
It all comes down to multiple offenders or the school system mistreating him/her. If you are talking about "prevention" you are no different from the offenders. The system tries to stop the shooter because it's just one person, easy to pick on...
that's worse than not doing anything, to be honest.

My idea is that for home room, have that class be lead by a teacher who has training in child therapy. Everyday starts with home room. Everyday have children talk about their previous day, and their plans for the present day. Write out their feelings in a journal, and share a portion with the group. Get to know each other intimately as a group lead by a professional. Not every kid had the ability to make friends, but with the help of a teacher who really cares about their life outside of school, a group can be formed with a mentality of belonging.

It's a step in the right direction, but not an end all solution. Unfortunately administrations at these schools do nothing until the person getting bullied blows up, and then they're the ones the schools try to punish, not the bully. Also in today's world many kids aren't just getting bullied by the kids in school, but also by the parents of the bully and many adults employed by the school. I've seen it first hand with my children and their friends. When my kids stood up for themselves, I warned the schools that if they did nothing to prevent it, I've given my children permission to put a stop to it. Also warned them if they went after my children, I would sue them personally along with the school system. Yes my children ended up putting a stop to it and the school administration put their tails between their legs and did nothing to my children.

It is maddening that these shootings are only growing. The Oxford shooting was preventable!! All the drills and high tech safety measures in the world will not stop a kid from being violent in a school. The school needs to know ALL of it's students, danger signs that students and teachers see need to NOT be ignored. Schools need to search backpacks, lockers, and be insistent on safe, non threatening behavior. How many more senseless deaths is this nation going to have? This guy makes total sense. Yes, hold negligent parents responsible, yes, change gun laws. But we all know the NRA has no interest in being helpful, so preventing these shootings by changing the school climate so that staff are connecting well and listening to each other and students and parents is imperative. Parents should not be sending their kids to school to be murdered.

No situation where every american needs to own a gun whatsoever. I get you may feel safer but there's a billion other precautions to take. Truly the reason so many kids do school shootings is because they feel it’s the only way out, they’re constantly getting physically/verbally abused by there pears and perhaps even there parents. To truly prevent school shootings we need teachers to actually stop bullying rather than look the other way or make excuses like saying it’s just horse play.

What about the fact that a huge and disproportionate amount of shooters are from unstable and fatherless homes? The patterns of these shooters are so clear that even the least perceptive among us can see them. Typically a loner, didn't have many friends, history of bizarre and disturbing behavior, self mutilating, home life is not stable, biological mother and/or father have criminal records. The systemic problem is unstable homes without fathers! We all agree our objective is to produce fewer young men who do horrible things. We agree it is not a simple policy fix. Put fathers back in homes! Fathers and mothers play integral roles in the spiritual and emotional formation of a child. Stop playing into this left wing cultural narrative that forces us to deny the distinction between men and women, thereby, mothers and fathers. Stop ignoring the role and the formation of the family plays in children's lives. Even if it forces you to look critically at your own family structure.

MOST schools are actually comprised of multiple different separate buildings on on school grounds with dozens of different entrance points. If schools actually hade a border wall built around them with secure checkpoints that people have to walk through in order to enter the school grounds while class was in session then schools would in fact be a lot safer.

130000 schools in US, x2 equals and "army " of 250,000 donut munching Guards, who will probably not be effective anyway when confronted by a suicidal teen in body armor....if another school shooting happens, they still get paid

Guns, guns and guns. The United States has a distorted fetish with this weapon, making it easier than any other developed nation to obtain it. Why? Business. I grew up in an Italian and a Korean school as a child and have been bullied at both. However I didn’t have parents with a gun in their drawer, not that I had those tendencies anyway. Also, I adored first person shooters as a kid, but never had a moment where I thought acting that in real life would be a possibility.
Finally this program presented by this man is compelling, but just does not address the root problem.
    - NOT VIDEO GAMES
    - NOT MENTAL ILLNESS
    - NOT BULLYING
    - NOT PREVENTIVE ACTS
All these things are very present in other countries as well
    > EASY ACCESS TO GUNS < as well as guns engrained in the Culture of the U.S.

So when some mentally ill maniac remembers that other people can't get guns because they're illegal, he walks into a mall and kills 100+ people with no consequences, or what if he walked in and someone had a gun and saw what he was doing and shot and killed him from the back, now he only killed like 1-2.

One day, my wife was reading about home burglaries in our zip code. She got concerned (to put it mildly). That day, I ordered a steel door, and went to the hardware store to purchase products to reenforce the other doors on the house.
I guess I should have gotten involved in community self help and positive role modeling for teens and people in gangs - so they could have more self esteem and pursue careers instead of breaking into homes to get things.
    Silly me.
