I think Riverdale’s main problem is that they soften the voices in every song. They sound like something you would hear on a pop radio, not like the emotional stories they are supposed to be.
Not only that, but live performers have to sing up to eight times. A week sometimes. If i recall correctly, Veronica's actress (Barrett) had to do 2 shows a day at times and Riverdale has the audacity to use these takes🤦♂️
My thoughts on the Heathers songs: Beautiful: They BUTCHERED Beautiful, it’s meant to be about how messed up the school is, and they turn it into the Heathers trying to make Heather C beautiful-er? What’s happening? Just kill me. Candy Store: What is this? It’s like they’re trying to make it like Veronica also has some level of power over the heathers, and fighting them for it? This feels like a dance battle in a teen show. Never mind, I forgot that’s what it is. Seventeen: they did pretty good! My only problems lie with the fact that they intertwined it with two couples (I know, I’m being picky) and it’s not “haha we’re depressed emo kids do we still deserve to be 17” like no they killed 3 people that’s why they’re asking it lol Big Fun: The singing, let’s face it, was horrible. What is up with that? I’m sorry but if you’re going to sing good songs get at least voices that fit the songs for it. I don’t like how they used it. A few other problems I had: unnecessary censorship, horrible covers, and used the song horribly. Also, the show is basically looking like a wannabe musical rather than whatever the plot of season 1 was, if that still exists. Sorry for making this so long!
Riverdale’s all that jazz really just feels like they’re trying way too hard to sexualize the song ? Most of it as I’ve seen is like that though I think. It might be the auto tune but all of their voices just sound. So weird? Like really weirdly 2 dimensional
No, I agree. I think why it works in the musical is because it’s not a sexual, and it hints into all the themes that will later show. This is just ladies rolling on the floor, trying to show off.
Riverdale writer: ok so we're gonna overly sexualize these teenage characters okay? The cast:*practicing candy store* you just gotta prove you're not a pus- Writer:WOAH WOAH WOAH WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU CANT SAY THAT SAY...UHHHHHH *looks at door* OKAY WE'RE GONNA SAY DOORKNOB INSTEAD!
not to defend the writer(s??) of that episode, but there's an actual 'high school' version of Heathers, so they're using the proper lyrics. (which makes me ask who thought it'd be a good idea to take a show like Heathers and make it a little more school friendly.)
@@briebeard3475 it's definitely an older one. I heard it during the 90's for sure. I was only alive for the last 2 years of the 80's, so I can't say how popular it was then.
Riverdale: Uses the high school version of the Heathers songs used for minors. Also Riverdale: Oversexualizes characters that are supposed to be minors.
@@jaeahn_ belting is a form of singing (super common in theatre) which comes from chest support, so it sounds sort of like a mix between singing and shouting but if done right it plays really well!! if you listen to renee rapp or barrett wilbert weed (belting) and laura osnes in “in my own little corner” (head voice), you might be able to hear that difference, they’re all incredibly talented theatre performers!! hope this helps
I just realized something really strange- despite having the resources for as many voices as they want, Riverdale’s Big Fun sounds like there’s like 4 people singing.
its the fact Cole Sprouse went all the way through Disney without having to sing then he goes on to do Riverdale and has to sing and its honestly hilarious
actually that’s not true... i was binge watching suite life with zack and cody/on deck and cole has actually sang at least 3 times in his disney channel career
Riverdale: has a teenager do a strip dance in a club in front of a bunch on adults, including her boyfriends father and her mother, so she can be initiated into a gang Also Riverdale: yOu JuSt GoTtA pRoOvE yOuRe NoT a DoOrKnOb AnYmOrE
They oversexualised sugar daddy. A song where the choreography is so sexual (Yitzhak and Hedwig humping) that they had to change it for the Tony awards. Like in that song Hedwig is butt naked in public (in context of the song I mean) singing about a sugar daddy in every sense of the word and yet Riverdale still managed to oversexualise it. I didnt think that was possible until Riverdale proved me wrong
You know what? Thank you Riverdale. Now I know what it truly means to put my energy into a song, since it's the exact opposite of what you did. (Seriously, what in the world happened to Big Fun? Even for songs I didn't know, I could tell something was off before even listening. Next time I do a production, I'm gonna keep this all in mind and put all the energy I can into it *and then some* )
Yes thank you, this comment is so correct, Big Fun seems so lifeless. I’ve done a censored version for Heathers, and honestly with so little we were given and so much improve we did I think we did 10x better than what they did (no offense to the actors)
live theater takes real work you practice for months and then once ur on stage thats it spotlights on you, no second chances, no auto tune nothing you have one shot to make opening night a night to remember.
@@Bubblesdefrog I agree. WHen your on a screen show, you can reshoot the scene again and again. THis is why I don't like how they do musicals. Lets keep the broadway actors doing the broadway music. Thank you!
That’s what makes broadway music so special. It takes weeks, even months, to have this show and it’s sold out tickets, a room with hundreds of people and there’s no second chances as someone has said. But with movies, a shoot can be done over and over again and the actors might as well be lip singing
That was my first thought too. A lot of these songs are supposed to be fast-paced and really show off the characters' personalities. Riverdale took all that out. Also, the actors aren't really musical theatre singers, and the show clearly didn't bother investing in any sort of training for them. They were like "let's just audiotune everything".
@@ohmygoddaddystop I agree I actually don't mind people making songs sexual even though the original one wasn't but I cringe so hard through that whole performance and to make it worse I love that song
My friend who watches Riverdale and has never seen heathers literally said Riverdale's cover was amazing of candy store. I played her the original and she regretted saying anything.
what's sad is that most of the riverdale cast aren't even bad singers, they're just assigned to songs that don't suit their voice at all then get way over edited until they don't sound real anymore.
They didn’t totally ruin 17 but they did lose the message, the whole point of that song was to show Veronica’s desperation for JD to change his ways. To show that he didn’t have to hurt everyone else to be able to love her. She was trying to save him
And mostly, people need to understand that musical theatre is live, so it's genuine, it's authentic. While in Riverdale, they had multiple takes, autotune and not a whole audience before them.
When u realise that they are all supposed to be in high school- Edit: I meant this by like riverdale literally sexualized all of these songs even more . Like heathers is a good badass musical. But riverdale just made it so uncomfortable
@@luciedrabkova8718 The fact that they can do that helps. But teens and adults can look pretty simaller dependong on age. And with teens you have to follow the laws that come with working eith minors.
Why are the portraying these so characters who are supposed to be TEENAGERS so sexually. Like, Betty does a damn strip dance and no one has an issue she's supposed to be like 16????????
As crappy as it is, it’s not the Riverdale actor’s faults. There’s literally compilations of the Riverdale actors talking about how they hate the scripts and the musical episodes😂
@Breya Burgess and then thay dance like...idk how to describe but you can see it yourself and apparently they have done drugs, threesomes et cetera in Riverdale....yeah I don't get how people can watch this
we can all agree veronica (from riverdale) should have been heather duke not macnamara, betty should’ve been instead, also they just.. did everything wrong with that😭😭
Worst part is: Fans of Riverdale won't look into the beauty of the original broadway. There are some song where Riverdale just really did the original dirty
Riverdale actually got me to go watch Heather's the musical, watched all the recorded performances on RUclips and buy the Broadway soundtrack...... I'm embarrassed but I liked the episode
@@sadsiren3208 Yeah, that's really good to hear but I just doubt there are actual high numbers when it comes to going to look at the source material. You're allowed to like the episode, but riverdale just can't hold a candle to the originals. The biggest disrespect is Anything Goes as well. Went from a fast song to get your foot tapping to... a balad? A slow sad song? Wat?
Funny how Heathers, a live show with no auto tune sounds 10X better than something that was auto tuned, that was supposed to sound good but is really like a cat’s nails on a chalkboard to any theater kid who has the misfortune of hearing it. Or any person that knows what good music is for that matter.
Lmao yes, I’ve watched a few musicals, but I’m not a theatre kid, but I am into music so I know when someone’s singing bad, and GOSH… Riverdale just absolutely butchered everything. I feel especially attacked with how they did heathers because heathers is one of my favorite musicals, and I was excited when I saw they were doing heathers, but then they just completely butchered it and it sounded horrible as heck…
@@PinkPixelProductions Same! I love Heathers, never watched Riverdale, and clicked this video cuz I knew Heathers would be in there. Extremely disappointed, especially with Candy Store. 😭 The only bit that sounded halfway decent was the hetero couple during Seventeen.
@@stephanienicole9324 Yeah, you’re right there. They really threw candy store in the trash with that performance. It doesn’t even make sense too! Like Cheryl is supposed to be fighting Toni or whatever, but when they’re singing the lyrics it makes no sense! In the original context, the heathers are telling Veronica to basically get it together and don’t mess with them or else she’ll end up like Martha, and when they say “Keep on testing me, and end up like her!” They point to Martha. But when Cheryl says it, it makes zero sense because there is no “her”! There is no “Martha” there! Who the heck is “her”??? I’m just pretty sad about it cus Cheryl looks cute as Heather Chandler, but her singing is really not that great.. and it’s just average. Like everyone else in the show. I blame the people who made the show for forcing them to do that, because they’re ACTORS, not singers. I bet they have hardly any singing experience, so they just ended up embarrassing the actors and their show with the musicals they did. They should’ve just not done anything related to musicals in the first place.
@@PinkPixelProductions Yeah, I don't really know much about Riverdale but I could've sworn I heard it was normal and not some sort of musical show lol. I was surprised to see how many songs they used (which probably didn't even make sense context-wise like you said with Candy Store). 12:42 - 12:45 in Beautiful also had me half laughing/half crying because I didn't even know what to think 😬 It just sounds so...yikes lol I really need to go listen to the official soundtrack to cleanse my mind and ears now lol
The only thing I could think all the way through all that Jazz by Riverdale: Aren’t they supposed to be like 17 years old? Like...in real life, if that happened, it would be really weird to be going to see kids being oversexualized!
@Brynn Chapman they could've lowered the key for the whole song though. It's just very underwhelming when you thought it would be the climax but then it turned out to sound quiet bcs they lowered the key on that particular line
I just can't get over the fact that a lot of people know these songs that I love only by these robotic, out of context, lacking any expression, creepily sexualized and commercialized counterparts that can barely be recognized as the same songs.
The thing is the show has the advantage of multiple takes and the auto tune that they use aggressively and they still don’t sound as good as the live version, mostly because of the auto tune messing with the honestly decent voices of most of the actors and making them sound dead. Seventeen was alright in the show because they backed off a little on the editing. The actors have good voices that could be even better if they got some coaching for musical theatre songs. Big Fun just has nothing in it and the choreography is so bad it can’t save the lackluster vocals. It’s incredibly frustrating to watch because it could actually be decent if the put in some real effort into the musical part rather than forcing it into the show
Riven Lore I think they just replaced Cole’s voice with Ryan’s in chorus because it sounds exactly like him and also completely different from the beginning
Exactly my thoughts. The autotune seems to destroy what makes the original musical vocals so good. It also never sounds/looks as if they are really singing, it's obviously a studio recording over a movie scene and that just looks weird, because their movements just don't match (like in the bar, when they constantly change the position of their head to and away from the microphone).
Yeah seventeen was actually watchable. It wasn’t comparable to the original, but I think if they got a vocal coach or some lessons they could be really good and we’d be a lot more forgiving of its other flaws in these episode
They over edit the voices to the point where they have no emotion Musicals are all about expressing emotion and info in a fun way that makes the viewers understand more without sounding super condescending and unnatural It’s supposed to sound raw and real but riverdale doesn’t achieve any of that, instead it feels like a cringy youtube music video from the 2000’s
Season 1 was about murder and drama and actually a decent season. Season 2 and then on turned into the musical wacky mess. I don't even think they have a real plot at this point.
It's because shows like Glee were hugely successful and adding songs allows them an additional revenue stream (via spotify/apple music etc) -- and musical numbers take up space that normally would have plot so they don't have to write as much. Notice they're never original songs that they'd actually have to spend time creating :/
EXACLY like they made this song sound so narcissist. and in Candy Store they sound like only 5 people were singing and didn't want their parents to know😂
The Heather adaptions were SO bad... all of them. It was kinda interesting to see Candy Store being a battle but the situation in the orginal (that the Heathers have the power and Veronica must follow them to stay at least popular) is just so much better
@@ladyi9178 yeah, agree, like the message of the original is like "b*tch, we are de god damm queens here, we RULE this high school, and you choose joining us, now accept the consequenses"
FINALLY someone pointed that out. i was literally raging- like its not making YOU beautiful it was supposed to be making VERONICA beautiful. couldve at least chosen someone else rather than making it all about red girl (idk her name i dont watch riverdale)
I mean it was okay but idk I can’t get into it (btw I think their voices are great, but like every 2 seconds it switches to Venessa and Madeleine and it breaks the mood for me. It’s supposed to be a “love song” between two ppl, I wish they kept it between either Madeleine and Venessa or Cole and Lily.)
I just don't understand why they would waste Casey Cott's voice by giving so many solos to the other cast members. Even in the Hedwig episode. Doesn't make sense. And, come on...those sound effects during the "dance" scenes? What the hell is that shit.
Like why do they keep giving Madeline these big lead roles? They have to put so much autotune into her voice, it takes even the slightest bit of emotion/passion out of her performance. I'm not saying it's her fault but I don't know why the crew would continously make her sing some of the most important numbers.
Fräulein Zuckerguss I Don’t understand it either, give The leading roles to actors Who Can really sing. (Casey and Lili for instance) I Don’t understand Why Cheryl always Neede to be The center of attention. Escecpially in The Musical Numbers and episodes
@@marialouisa5888 And I love Madeline but they need to stop giving her so many dang solos. Why waste all that time when you have two amazing singers that can literally save your show.
@@frauleinzuckerguss1906 I was debating whether or not to name Madelaine, but yes, the showrunners' decision to continually give her solos really brings down the quality of the musical episodes they insist upon having. Lili and Casey (and Camila to a certain degree) are the best singers, yet are hardly given opportunities to showcase their voices. This is probably a bit harsh, but every time KJ Apa sings, I physically cringe. Madelaine I'm sure has an okay singing voice, but, as you said, with all the autotune it sounds flat and lifeless. Just stop with the musical episodes, Riverdale! Please!
Ikr they legit forgot the entire ensemble it’s like do they know nearly all musicals have ensembles or backup singers and they sounded horrible and don’t even get me started with the Choreography

I agree though, loser would sound better.
When its literally meant to be about the three heathers and all the shit they do! Theres no use for Veronica to sing it because shes just meant to be watching, in the context of the story Heather chandler is meant to be explaining that the heathers are bitchy and dont care so their gonna fake a love note to Martha from her massive crush, Riverdale takes the context of what’s happening and the story being told in the song and throws it out of the goddamn window.

The fact they managed to oversexualize Out Tonight and All That Jazz in a show about teenagers doesn't sit right with me
and then undersexualized candy store lyrics but oversexualized the dance
Out tonight is supposed to be a song about a girl who strips for a club, but even in a song about a FREAKING STRIPPER they oversexualized it.
I think anything goes is also on the list, but I agree with you.
But then do the highschool lyrics for the Heathers songs, it makes no sense to me 😭😭😭
You know what?
You can tell they are screen actors and not live theatre actors
live theater takes real work you practice for months and then once ur on stage thats it spotlights on you, no second chances, no auto tune nothing you have one shot to make opening night a night to remember.
Can we talk about how riverdale is just trying to make the songs dramatic and sexy and completely take away the musical theatre aspect of it?!?!
Especially anything goes....
Well river dale is a sexualized and mystery filled version of the Archie Comics (I collected quite of few of the comics when I was younger)

@@stephanienicole9324 Yeah, you’re right there. They really threw candy store in the trash with that performance. It doesn’t even make sense too! But when Cheryl says it, it makes zero sense because there is no “her”! There is no “Martha” there! Who the heck is “her”???

The thing is the show has the advantage of multiple takes and the auto tune that they use aggressively and they still don’t sound as good as the live version, mostly because of the auto tune messing with the honestly decent voices of most of the actors and making them sound dead. Seventeen was alright in the show because they backed off a little on the editing. The actors have good voices that could be even better if they got some coaching for musical theatre songs. Big Fun just has nothing in it and the choreography is so bad it can’t save the lackluster vocals. It’s incredibly frustrating to watch because it could actually be decent if the put in some real effort into the musical part rather than forcing it into the show
Big Fun choreo in Riverdale was a mess. I swear they added in a small bit of Ryan’s voice at “can’t we be seventeen?” And that just was not right
Riven Lore I think they just replaced Cole’s voice with Ryan’s in chorus because it sounds exactly like him and also completely different from the beginning
They over edit the voices to the point where they have no emotion
Musicals are all about expressing emotion and info in a fun way that makes the viewers understand more without sounding super condescending and unnatural
It’s supposed to sound raw and real but riverdale doesn’t achieve any of that, instead it feels like a cringy youtube music video from the 2000’s

This is very on brand for the mess that is Riverdale
Season 1 was about murder and drama and actually a decent season. Season 2 and then on turned into the musical wacky mess. I don't even think they have a real plot at this point.
I...thought Riverdale was about the Archie comics...
Wellll Heathers is also about murder and stuff.. but at least they make the music and singing work and it’s great
It's because shows like Glee were hugely successful and adding songs allows them an additional revenue stream (via spotify/apple music etc) -- and musical numbers take up space that normally would have plot so they don't have to write as much. Notice they're never original songs that they'd actually have to spend time creating :/

what’s striking is how much more powerful the broadway versions felt and how much more personality and character the songs had. in riverdale the covers just feel… flat :(
high school students singing a song called sugar daddy to their principal isn’t at all weird
Exactly, like what the literal fuck
No that's totally normal and not weird and possibly imply that the principle is doing something very wrong
Remember back when there was like no songs in it, and they were just trying to figure out who killed Jason?
Wayyy back when
When it was good
who killed him again? 😀

@@meandyourmom69_ OH YEAH
Riverdale's heathers really sounds like a copyright free, kid friendly version of the real one made by some 15 year olds who don't know what they're doing
15 year olds are better than that, or at least they put more effort into it
That's an insult to 15 year olds..... 😅
Kids bop 2.0
When Cheryl sang Carrie it loooked so funny i burst out laughing
“You just gotta prove you’re not a *doorknob* anymore” *very creative*
I'm so confused why didn't they just say loser 💀
I'm pretty sure they did a version of heathers meant for schools so the lyrics are changed to be a little more appropriate
lmpossibIeEunoia I know why they changed it but people are very open to the internet anyway and they could’ve just said loser or something but they said *doorknob*
@@CelestiaLu yeye. but they had to pay for rights to perform the version they did (meant for schools and such), and if they want to change the lyrics legally, they'd have to pay for more rights I believe- which you can assume they didn't since the lyrics are the same. I agree though, loser would sound better.

vinny bin BIG FUN WAS A TRAGEDT
*tragedy
the entire heathers musical was done dirty
Ikr!
Honestly they skipped shit and it didn't even sound right with the censoring
seventeen wasn’t the worst thing ever but like-
It’s still bad
They dubbed Cole Sprouce on that one
But big fun ooooh big fun was not the best thing ever

Josie: *singing*
Dancers at the back: *My teenage sleep paralysis demon on tiktok at 3 am*
The riverdale big fun was flat and so was “end up like her” they obviously autotuned Carrie:I
Omg we don’t even talk about Big Fun
They atotuned Carrie yet it still sounds so flat and awful
Wtf does the sound design for this show. Why can i hear the actors every move, but barely hear the singing?
They’re spending all their time adding in hair whips for some reason
the stepping sounds in beautiful
*insert woosh sounds*
I'm triggered by all of this, but I'm especially triggered by the Heathers episode in which Veronica didn't play Veronica
I know, but it’s because the character fit more with heather because of the whole divorce thing
Yeah, and then they had live five different people playing Veronica instead.
@@starrycactusx5978 Can you believe it was supposed to be Josie?
i love your profile pic ;)
It physically hurts me to listen to the Heather's
tbh "Beautiful" was good at first but fr tho that "WHO COULD SURVIVE THIS??" had me speechless..
They made Candy Store into singing battle I-
Hey peggyyyyyyy...... put on a red dress....
@@lisab4395 I showed Eliza and she tried to slap me! 😳
And they didn’t even divide the lyrics properly!
Wait I’m so confused. I thought Riverdale was a murder mystery
Dude I thought the same thing
it was, then it just turned into utter diaster
@@dmay6637 it's just a whole mess I don't just a mess I don't know how to explain it any other way like season one they had a plot it was all right it wasn't good or anyting it was very all right and a season 2 it was like you know what screw all that we're just going to throw everything out the window
Still is. We are trying to solve the mystery of why they keep killing our precious shows!
It is but they add musical episodes and songs into it idk why it's so dumb
no one:
not even dead Jason:
Cheryl and Toni: *fake hair swoosh sound effects*
Hello other pjo Stan I spited you
@@Audrey.May16 actually, I think they were referring to Jason from riverdale, who also died... but I thought the exact same lmao, so hello fellow pjo stan
This just made me appreciate Neil Patrick Harris even more 😊
seventeen wasn’t that bad honestly but beautiful and candy store were ROUGH
Seventeen was terrible especially compared to Barrett & Ryan.
@@katlndry obviously compared to Barrett and Ryan it's terrible, but compared to the rest of the episode is not that bad.

What about big fun???
Truth
are we like, not gonna talk abt how badly they butchered big fun? lol
Emily Reed it sound like they’re whispering compared to the original.
Idk if it's just me but both in "In" and "Big Fun" the harmonies sound way off.
And the choregraphy 🤦🏽♀️ who allowed that ?!
It killed me at the beginning already but the chorus revived me just to kill me again
@@astronomnom4749 It's like two people singing and they can't even sing
