I’m a follower of Jesus and have been for many years. I attempt to treat people like Jesus did and try to reach people with the best balance of grace, love, and truth. That being said, JP’s teachings have radically changed my perception of my time and of my every day habits. Never has it been to well articulated to me that every moment/decision of my day sways the world a little bit towards heaven or a little bit towards hell. Which in retrospect seems obvious, but JP is so well versed in his profession and in the biblical stories on which he lectures, I can’t help but feel conflicted on admiring him so much yet, at the same time, hoping he one day sees Jesus as the Literal son of God and not just a metaphorical goal for every human.
Amen. I read an article recently by a Christian woman who I agreed with. She made the same point I've always thought about Jordan. God uses all people for his works. The fact is regardless of where Jordan ends up many, many people have thought about the bible again, or for the first time. We know God is active in this time. Preparing and awakening hearts. Perhaps Jesus is preparing the soil for many souls to grow and come to him. As always, as for us, we are to faithfully defend the gospel whenever we can.

I watched that video. You should really stop slandering people. This specious second rate pseudo-intellectual critique is meant to damage a man, and not consider his ideas . The speaker has in his mind an idea about Jordan Peterson. An idea along these lines: Jordan Peterson is the racist intellectual godfather of the alt-right. Now, that isn't accurate. If one has listened to Peterson for any period of time, he neither glorifies Hitler nor shrinks in his criticism of the alt-right. However, his critics, and they are many, consistently attempts to link him with alt-right ideology. I suspect this gentleman in the proposed video is in that group. I challenge "oh brother" to comb through Peterson's video's or talks, by now there are hundreds available on the internet, and post the link where he downplays the holocaust, admires Hitler, or fans the flames of love for the alt-right. Any one of those will do.

I don't think pastors should aim to just "speak with authority" like Jordan. Part of what makes him popular is his ability to speak with authority AND compassion AND without hipocrisy. He has his own life together, but he is not blind to the actual struggles people have in doing that nor let's them off the hook for accomplishing it. That's the real things pastors should take from him.
My wife introduced me to Jordan Peterson. She had gone through much suffering in her life at the hands of others. Jordan Peterson's lectures helped her weather the storm and emerge strong. I too have come to reset a lot of what was wrong in my approach as well from his lectures. I'm 49 and I still needed a strong father figure even at this stage in my life. May he recover well & soon.

What I like the most about Peterson is that he has the courage to stand up to the bullying and the totalitarianism of the "progressives". The Church should be doing the same, but, quite shamefully, it lacks the courage.
We have Pastors that have stood up against sin and calling a government to repent like macarthur and James Coates in Canada.. It is one thing speaking in conferences and just speaking about difference of philosophies but to fight against the powers of darkness and the flesh , Satan is another thing..The gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church of Jesus Christ..

I loved this APJ more than any other I have ever heard and at this point I have heard most, if not, all of them. @Desiring God, please please acquire John Piper's opinion on this matter and that of other prominent fellows of the Christian theology. I am a young man who has endured a lot in my life as I assume most have. Jordan Peterson's collection of various works have been a God-send for me and I dare not rely *too* heavily on them without proper scriptural guidance brought forth by learned Christian elders and leaders but as it stands, Peterson's writings have helped shaped who I am. The Bible has been and always will be my full and foremost foundation but Peterson's work is invaluable in this day and age at least to a man such as myself. There is a lot to unpack about Jordan Peterson and to have more experienced Christian theologians take a stab at it would be beneficial to creating a strong and well-versed stance on the issue. I have not read his any books but I would be purchasing 12 rules for life pretty soon. But it would be great to see the perspective of christian leaders on JBP.
I would say that if you need JP to help you live life, but the Bible is your "go to," then you may be in the wrong church where you should be getting discipled by those in the church with more maturity to help you through things. JP has a secular viewpoint....just see how he answers where meaning comes from....clearly anti-biblical ("anti" meaning not derived from).
Nan Flan That's not at all what I meant. Jordan Peterson teaches, men specifically, good lifestyle changes and ways to better yourself. That's why I listen to him. That's also why I asked the question here because my Christianity is more important to me than JP and anything he has to say.... I assure you I do not need JP to live life.
I’ve watched a large number of Dr. Peterson’s interviews and his lectures. I think one of the things that makes it difficult for people to pin him down or to categorize him as is the fact that we don’t know the depth of his knowledge. He has brought such an awakening to Scripture among the common man and an awareness to the Divine in the mundane things that we can’t simply dismiss the things he says or does as “academic” or “psychological” - even though he enters into those realms of thought. One of the things I find appealing about his approach to philosophy is that you can actually see him learning in real time. He often mentions this. He doesn’t just share what he knows; he tries to go beyond what he already knows which, in many ways, enters the realm of faith. And faith, as we know, goes beyond head knowledge. For example, if you watch his interviews in a chronological manner, you begin with the controversy of politics in Canada, then in Channel 4. As I would put it, “People often come for the memes, but they stay for the meaning.” You can actually see him change and grow in his beliefs over time in a span of 2 years, and each time his respect for Christ and His teachings grew in considerably. In one interview he even mentioned specifically that the battle he is in isn’t political or psychological, but theological. (I can’t remember the radio station in Britain who interviewed him but you can look it up. It’s only audio.) For me, what I see in Dr. Peterson is an example of a modern day Joseph or Daniel or Nehemiah. A person who has a considerably large political reach but has a strong spiritual edge that clearly points to Christ. And if you don’t believe that he points to Christ, I don’t think you’ve taken the time to examine him long enough. It’s strange, while he’s not “Christian” in the traditional sense, it seems that he also puts far greater value in Christ than most Christians do. And I do believe God is using him. How many pastors would have churches sit down for a 2 hour lecture about Cain and Abel? Yet people pay money to fill stadiums just to hear this man talk about just that, and other biblical stories. God is doing something here, and I think dismissing it as simply “academic” or “psychological” will do the church a great disservice. Had we lived during Joseph’s time, or Daniel, or Nehemiah, I don’t think we would theologically agree with everything they say or do, but it’s where their life is pointing towards that God determines whether or not they accomplished their purpose. “Now when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed.” -Acts 13:36. David is a model in the Christian faith, but we obviously don’t agree with everything he said or did. Nevertheless, the LORD said he accomplished God’s purpose in his generation. I believe He is doing the same with Dr. Peterson. The last thing I’ll share is this. Dr. Peterson is a father-figure. And the greatest damage the world has taken, other than sin itself, is fatherlessness. You remove fathers, you break marriage. You break marriage, you break families. You break families, you break societies. I believe God is using Dr. Peterson, in many ways, to be a father to the fatherless. I am one of them. And I believe in Christ the Son of God. If we spend time in the Word, in prayer, in fellowship and in service to others, I think we can recognize the Spirit of our Father when it comes to our attention. And that’s what I see happening with the whole Jordan Peterson phenomenon. Our Father is overshadowing him for a greater purpose for our sake. There are more things happening here than I can explain, but I hope I was able to help you sort out your perspective on Dr. Peterson.
The reason young men clean their room when Peterson says it and not when Mom says it is simple: when Mom says it, her reason why is “because I said so”. When Peterson says it, his reason is “because your life is most likely falling apart right now, and that’s because you continually procrastinate with something so fundamentally simple as cleaning one damn room of your house”. Absolutely. I needed Jordan to direct me in the direction of human behavior. Then I moved my focus to God and us as his creation. I started a RUclips channel reading texts my dad sends me. It’s soul nourishment in under 4 minutes. Helps hearing the struggles of other people and how they deal with those troubles.
Something that gives me hope is that I read Jung before Christ revealed Himself to me. His writing opened me up to the Bible. This is my prayer, that those who follow Peterson, will also be able to hear and respond to the Holy Spirit.
I believe that is Peterson's purpose, wether he knows it or not. Young people today are almost alien to the previous generations of humans, and an unorthadox, analytical, scientific approach to spirituality and faith, I believe, may be the only way to reach them.
By definition, those not responding to the Holy Spirit are rejecting Him out of their own decision via suppression and not because God is withholding their response; God will not override their free will. John 16; Romans 1.
BTW, I know completely that PIper, et al...are 5 point hyper-calvinists which do not believe in man having free-will, so no need to help me understand this.

I appreciate Jordan Peterson for the knowledge he displays. I learnt quite a lot of helpful things from him. He talks about the scriptures in the context of how he understands them and he is emphatic about the role of God in man finding meaning in life, albeit not in the way that many Christians are used to. He speaks with authority, as alluded to in this episode, and he is highly illustrative in his speeches. I am quick to recommend him to friends - long-term church going individuals like me - who the churches failed to teach and preach the undiluted gospel to. I am stopping short of saying he was instrumental to my getting to pay more attention to my faith. Today, I know the Bible has the details on the purpose of life and I am fully satisfied studying it with the help of the holy spirit. Maybe it is just a mystery that God would use different ways to get the attention of those he loves.
His videos explaining Christianity are what made me reconsider the religion I was raised under up until my parents divorced, he’s never said anything negative about it so I don’t know how anyone could criticize someone who’s only reawakened peoples faith

Jordan Peterson’s lectures on personal responsibility have truly changed my life. He has only driven me closer to God and made me love Gods word even more. I think God is truly using him, and I now pray that Jordan will truly find the truth of Jesus Christ’s divinity and come to a full understanding that Jesus is Lord and Savior. He is dealing with a lot with his wife’s health currently, and I hope it leads him into Gods arms. We can only pray.
To be blunt: I have an gift from God (The God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob - I am that I am) to see an anointing on someone. Anointing(s) are very rare but seemed to showing up more often. Jordan Peterson has an anointing. He sincerely has reverence towards God. On some level Jordan Peterson must know this. The first few minutes of watching him on line - I laughed with great joy - He has a voice in the wilderness and has risen from No where from the general Christian church perspective - and then I cried. I wept with Joy and Fear for we are entering into a new and violent Season. Pray for him. Please.
I have felt genuine compassion from Peterson about young men that I haven't seen in pastors for years perhaps even centuries. A lot of pastors in the past and today care more about women in the church because by and large women submit better to clergy authority than men, so it's easier to pastor women than men. When I was a youth group leader I saw this all the time so I just focused on the young men in my church. Plenty of leaders where focusing on women as it was back then.
If this man, no matter his beliefs, turns even one lost, nihilist, self destructive, media absorbed young person, to accept the importance of morality, truth, and Christianity, how do you know it isn't God's plan?
norton snale God can of course use anyone and anything to draw someone to Himself. Nothing is impossible for Him!! however that doesn’t mean that Jordan Peterson should teach a theology that is contrary to God. It’s not God’s plan for pastors and teachers and leaders to teach something incorrect about Him and His Word. That doesn’t mean He can’t or won’t use Jordan Peterson right now but it does mean that God calls Jordan to teach His full truth whether God will use Jordan right now or not. That’s not the point. The point is more that God calls Jordan as a person in a position of power and authority to teach God’s full truth and use and view scripture (God’s Word) the way God desires and calls him to.
And you assume that YOU have the full truth and JBP doesn’t? What if J actually has a more complete understanding of truth than you do? Ever listened to his biblical lectures? I consider JPB more of a Christian than 90% of people that claim the name and has done more for the Kingdom of God than the same
Because the act (in your scenario) originated from this man, not from God. It may be God’s plan or it might not be. It isn’t perfectly motivated. It is, therefore, incongruous with God. If, instead, this nasty and sinful person gave himself to God and asked for His guidance when actively herding others into His flock and influencing others then the act would be perfect. You must “know” God in order to recognize and walk in His footsteps.

Thank you so much for addressing this. I’ve watched many of doctor Peterson’s videos and while I was impressed by his convictions and compassion, I knew that there were areas in his way of thinking that did not match with biblical Christianity. Thank you for shedding some light on this topic.
Dr. Peterson has made it clear faith is more complicated than a simple belief in God or the resurrection. He's not just being analytical. He's elevating faith above the simple minds of non-believers. Because of him, I've drawn closer to our Lord. My local pastors have had little influence.
Jordan Peterson’s magnetism comes from having an explanation for WHY it’s important. Not just “do this because it’s good”. He offers answers to their internal, long held beliefs and questions.
I’m a pastor and I have received a lot from him. The culture wars had created a Unitarian left within the church as well and his views push against that. There are a lot of young men in my church who talk a lot of theology but simply can’t get their life together or take responsibility for any of their actions. Theologically, I think Peterson’s views verges on Gnosticism at times and we need to be discerning of that, however, he seems to be a man in the process of finding God. We should pray for him and encourage him and hope that Jesus will be the king of his heart.
I watched THAT interview. That irritating radical closed-minded feminist interviewer just refused to understand. Biased from the very start all the way to the end of the interview. Interrupting him and not let him finish any statement. It looked like she was more concerned on busting his theories somehow instead of just interviewing and trying to understand him.

Excellent conversation and as a female and a listener of Jordan Peterson for years and hours I would love to hear a follow-up in 2023/24 by Alistair. Jordan has strengthened my faith in Christ though I recognize the reality he so honestly articulates of his reticence to fully embrace orthodox Christianity. I wonder if it is his genuine integrity that restrains him to do so. God knows and yes discernment so critical. Is he perhaps discerning to the extent paralysis of analysis??? I continue to watch and pray and know God's Sovereignty reigns over all. Thank you for this conversation and wisdom.
I have been in and out of AA for 25 years, once had 10 years in row and was fully involved on every level in service and sponsorship. I can tell you that Jordan Peterson reminds me of the fellowship of AA every time I hear about him. He has brought light to those who needed it so, if you do believe in Jesus in your heart then you will know where that light truly emits.
Alastair's assessment of Dr. Peterson's beliefs regarding the Bible doesn't quite capture the complexity. He certainly refers to the Bible as being a true myth and allegorical. However, I've listened to many videos of him expressing his beliefs on this subject and on a few of them, when expressly asked if he believes, for instance, if Jesus literally and physically rose from the dead in the sense that orthodox Christians believe that He did, he pauses as he so often does and responds, "I don't know" to the chagrin of the interviewer in one particular interview I was listening to who was hoping Jordan would repudiate that possibility. This interviewer seemed very let down that Jordan would even allow for that possibility but he stood his ground. I was impressed with that, considering he is obviously not a regenerate believer. He has said that the fact it is true myth and allegorical on many levels, does not preclude it being true, also, in a literal sense. In the aforementioned interview, he went on to say he intended to have a very focused study on the Bible to understand it better. We should pray for him. He seems to me like someone with a seeker's heart.
Agreed. I find it sad that so many people are willing to critique this man when we each have gone through our own journeys and none of us are perfect. God comes through in His own way and in His own time. Jordan has helped many thousands of people live better lives, and for that we should be thankful. In terms of his own personal spiritual journey, I too pray that he will find God and believe in Christ as our true Saviour (if he has not done so already).
I do not see how someone can believe Jesus rose from the dead with such certainty without infallible proof. I see Jordan as someone who wrestles with God and is willing to ask deep questions. Jordans tests his belief so much because he knows where shaky religious beliefs lead aka the 20th century.
@@christianporter6357 I personally choose to believe despite the lack of infallible proof. That's the point of faith. And that's not to say I don't have my doubts as well from time to time. That's one of the reasons I enjoy Peterson so much, just like you said: his tendency to always test his beliefs and dig deeper. Wrestling with God (or any prevalent narrative, for that matter) is necessary to have any sort of truly meaningful beliefs.

The interpretation that by Believing that God is real and that Jesus rose from the dead in a literal sense is incorrect. Because if you believe something you will act if it is true. Too many Christians say that they believe In God but do not act as though He is real. So if the Bible is interpreted in a metaphorical sense then you will see that actions that embody Christ based on belief will allow you to transcend evil. Also if you have faith that embodying Christ will allow you to transcend evil you will act as though God is real. But if you believe that being a Christian is based on only believing something to be true and not acting as if it is true then you don’t actually believe something.
We can't just respond to authority that is attractive though. The biblical prophets authority was God's authority. The apostle Paul said he did not speak with the enticing words of man's wisdom but in simple easy to understand language. Pastors need to get more of GOD not more of Jordan Peterson. While I do like JP I don't think he is or should be a learning tool for Pastors. I think this actually very dangerous because he is a philosopher first and although attractive his philosophies are assembled from human reasoning in priority to God's reasoning. God has told us to meditate day and night in His word, not JP word. God wants us to have our minds transformed by the renewing of our minds to God's word. JP is without doubt an intellectually attractive man and the fact that he quotes scripture can seem somewhat appealing also to Christians, but Christians need to be very careful they don't frustrate and confuse his teachings where they are subtly similar but DIFFERENT from God's teachings. Remember, the devil quoted scripture to Jesus. In conclusion I would say if anyone follows or listens to JP arguments I would advise to keep it distinctly separate from God's word. JP has a book with 12 lessons for life but God has a books with thousands of lessons in it and each one has been rubber stamped by Almighty God. What more do we or Pastors need. If God sends a man then GOD will equip a man. God is no man's debtor, He gave Moses everything he needed.
Most of these "man's wisdom" arguments usually seem like ways of shirking the responsibility of having coherent theologies or the responsibility to make honest attempts to discover truth when it's complex. Christianity has been greatly harmed by people who think they can say any ol' dumb thing and that everyone should take their uninformed opinions as gospel because they claim to have the Holy Spirit, or claim to base it on the Bible, and make themselves and by extension Christ out to be a silly ignorant liar.
If you think that religion, philosophy, and science can be reconciled then there's no danger in taking in their ideas as long as you verify them with scripture. Having that skill is another discussion.
I think your position might be overly fearful, though I do appreciate its carefulness. We should vet every specific thing we learn from this phenomenon, but a takeaway like "people respond to compassion and patience and a father figure caring about them, rather than to being tossed condemning or vaguely helpful verses and then given a cold shoulder" is not evil worldly advice. Pastors should feed His sheep the word of God. When we're living life together we should have the word of God throughout, but if you think all someone needs in dealing with depression (or a lack of self control or structure etc.) is the right verse, then we disagree. God is not indebted to man. Every breath Jordan Peterson breaths, and John Piper, and every pastor and serial killer breaths is made possible by God. How could he owe Jordan Peterson anything, or owe Bill Gates anything just because pastors prepare for sermons using Microsoft Word? Phillipians 1:15-18 makes me think that it's not so much something to fear if Peterson's example informs some christians trying to more effectively spread the gospel of more effective techniques. So the techniques/wisdom might be a smidge "of the world", but if we employ them to further the gospel, Paul rejoices. Even that would be a compromise kind of, except that it isn't wrong to use insights into psychology or science or history or skills in writing or speaking learned outside of the Bible. Paul was taught by Gamaliel, who taught languages, logic, manners etc. But yes, we should be quite careful to avoid alluring "wisdom" that isn't true wisdom. All true wisdom is from God.
I was what you could call a disciple of Peterson back in the winter and spring of 2017. This description is very accurate. It is disappointing that he has had very few serious Christian contesters in the realm of philosophy and theology. Many of his assertions are valid from a Christian perspective, but he tries to use Nietzsche/Kant "arguments" that people should do good by sheer force of will with no rational justification! This is bound to deteriorate in the heart of the philosophical skeptic, as it did in mine. A friend gave me a book on philosophy by R.C Sproul, and it made everything click into place. The thinking Christian is a rational person, and has justification for their faith. One must not hold up their faith by arbitrary subjective willpower.
The best way that I can compare and contrast Jordan Peterson and what I think of when I think of a traditional pastor is.... As stated in the video both preach oh, yes. But, Jordan Peterson's mode of preaching is truly to teach. Whereas pastors to me have a goal of convicting and converting, nothing wrong with that, but it lends itself to coming away with more questions than answers and with feeling like I wasn't being taught but was being indoctrinated. Now I don't feel like the pastor's that I'm a describing are "wrong", but I feel like there should be more TEACHING - leave the Holy Spirit to do the convicting and converting. Give me the knowledge that I need to make an informed decision. Knowing that it's not the pastor that does the converting but the Holy Spirit. Feed my spirit with knowledge. With that said, because I know Jordan Peterson's views on Jesus Christ and the resurrection I listen to him with extreme caution. But, I feel like he does a better job of helping me to understand the Bible than most pastors ive encountered in person or online. I feel like pastors are so scared to teach from or ABOUT anything other than the Bible or to make the Bible relatable in any way. I walk away feeling like it's "theology" and not REAL - and thus like it's unattainable. It seems like it's either that extreme, or the other extreme where preachers like the Prosperity Gospel preachers read a verse and then spend an hour telling a story that has nothing to do with that verse. I wish pastors would take the time to teach, I think that is what actually grips people's hearts - it's like a good parent who instead of just saying do this and don't do that, they actually take the time to explain why! not just because I said so, or just because the Bible said so. Take the time to help me to understand! Speaking of time, with the economics of church today where pastors are having to rent out schools by the hour or recreation centers by the hour, and even when I'm in actual Church buildings, the time limits make everything feels so businesslike. It's either a sermon that must end by 10 a.m. sharp so the pastor can Rush his other campus across town and preach, it's either that or a long drawn-out sermon where the word is not really broken down and it's overly emotional followed by hour of church "announcements" and events - just ceremony. I honestly feel like Jordan Peterson does a better job of espousing the word Then I get in any church that I've been to. now i will say I do like things like John Piper's videos where he does like a 10-minute Bible study, but I think people are craving something more tangible. I don't just want to know what the Greek word for this or that is, or how this first traces to that first, help make it practical and alive to me! Help me to see that not just because the Bible says it's true that it's true, But help me to see that it's ACTUALLY true! I know there's a huge emphasis on faith and the future Promises of God in Christianity, but I also and I'm convinced that God's word is applicable to my life right now. and not just in the way that the Prosperity Gospel preachers preach. For an example of what I mean by that, look no further than Jordan Peterson's teaching. He talks heavily about suffering but also about how that suffering is worth it if I I am living the truth right now. Here and now! I feel like this is where Jordan Peterson excels. I feel as though for the first time the Bible feels real to me when I listen to Jordan Peterson explain things.

I am a Born again Christian, since 83, and my return from Beirut, I've been a believer since about two, when I got eye surgery in Barcelona, and got my left eye for the first time, and the rehab period, is the beginning of my life's memories. I have been endowed with a talent to fix things, always have, and from this, derived my faith in the first, but never "committed to it", until I was forced by circumstance to stop running. Since childhood, a "navy brat" of three siblings, I've understood, when one tells the truth, anyone can say and see the same thing, and while descriptions might differ slightly, the truth will be seen, period. When a lie is put forth, we must consider it, like any other statement, and we either denounce it, having better knowledge, and intent to truth, or we must live "under it", whether as protagonists, propagating it, and becoming its partners, or we must reject it, either openly, inviting attack, or in silent revolt. To go with it, almost always involves "personalizing it", and embellishing the lie, and the more who accept it, the more embellishment it is adorned with, and ever harder to accept. It can reach its peak, and most realize it can't be embellished anymore, and the effort then is pressed on "forcing belief", but up to that point, "liars" must add their bit, to make it "their story". We can only deny lies of this sort, individually. We can well accept others with our own stance, be influenced, but we must choose in our own hearts, we will not accept even the notion, and we must choose so, because it is right, not because we want to. When we enter life with this knowledge, taught by practice, "watch and then do", we can grow up and into faith, well founded. Most of us are born into life with limits on truth, mixed up families, and access to faith is available, but so is denial, with strong support. We cannot "know God", except that we allow God to move inside us, and change our "locks", such that his are the key and the only key. We can only be a "strong community" if we are a community made up of Strong Individuals, men, women, children, Fathers, Mothers, Sons, Daughters, each substantial as themselves, being groomed to assume their equal part in God's world". We want very much, so often, to "come to God as a group", because the idea of facing "The Creator" one on one can be terrifying. When we do come, we find we face the love of our Father, in the body of Jesus, and we get to see the greatness of Creator, and his great Love, in the Son, and the terror recedes, as we realize the saving blood, shed for all to come to Him. I am blessed to simply know I have sinned, and have been forgiven.
I was introduced to Mr. Peterson’s videos from my non-christian chiropractor, who knew I was a believer and was adamant to tell me that he was listening to these “bible teachings” of Jordan Peterson. This blew my mind as I was faced down, back being cracked. Brad the chiro who I was praying for was interesting in bible study. Praise the Lord. Turns out Jordan is quite articulate and interesting to listen to but, his “truth” is not quite enough to satisfy him. There’s some anger in his voice, some frustration and it’s sad to see Jordan get so close and yet be so far. I pray that the Lord will open his eyes to see The Truth of Jesus, which will be truth enough for Jordan’s mind to be fully blown. Problem will be then if he becomes a Christian, would his messages/popularity remain? No. He would loose it all. That may be a hard pill for him to swallow. Bible literacy is key brothers and sisters. Fundamental to our walk. Lots of “teachers” out there that can make us stumble.
Nick Smith I have to disagree. Peterson's main message is about taking responsibility and accountability for your life. If he becomes a Christian his message wouldn't change and neither would political opinions. They also noted that his message is heavily influenced by Christianity.

Jason - I don't sound like that at all, friend. Maybe the Lord is using Peterson to bring attention to the Scriptures, but it does not "appear" that Peterson has submitted Himself at the feet of Jesus as Lord. That's all I'm saying
I attended his lecture when he was in my town. He comes off as entirely genuine in person. He has a very powerful presence, but it's his genuine caring for people and wanting to see them succeed that really draws you in. I am a very devoted Christian, and I don't have a problem with the way he uses the scriptures. In some ways he reminds me of Dennis Prager, who has his rational biblical commentary on Exodus from the Jewish perspective that I've been listening to. It's almost like they're trying to sell religion on this rational basis. It feels like it's this scientific/secular age we live that is driving people to take this tactic. It's almost as if they're begging people not to totally reject the wisdom of the past just because it's wrapped up in a story people think is unbelievable. I don't know how effective it is, but I find their discussions of scripture interesting even if I don't agree with everything they say.
This is one of the better synopses of Peterson by Christian commentators yet was saddened to hear the guest get sloppy with his take on what Peterson actually said about Scripture. He read the excerpt yet maimed the totality. Peterson is *very* precise in his speech in general, perhaps even more so in print. He doesn't merely attribute Scripture abstract evolutionary socio-biological curation, he is inferring mediums by which something much bigger (ostensibly God) has woven these myriad dimensions of reality and manifest His character. It is quite true Dr Peterson doesn't proclaim faith as Christians do, he is elusive but open, perhaps with either an over-developed fear of ideology and faith or perhaps with keen protection of the platform given the enemies who seek to destroy both faith and it's highly developed (and useful) presuppositions.
Peterson has even stated that he is not trying to be reductionist to the scripture. That he believes its more true than physical reality itself. He even stated that he doesn't discount the possibility of miracles as they are described in the Bible. It was his lectures that turned this skeptical atheist into a full on bible believing Christ follower. God is definitely using him.
Thank you for the well balanced perspective, I have been following Peterson for a long time and have been hoping to see Christian's learn from him as I believe he is touching on some things we need to move towards. I agree Petersons work is doing a lot of good in helping people begin to look at scripture for a foundation for their lives, his teachings though by no means are going to get them to embrace the full gospel and the belief in literal truth that it requires. At the same time Petersons attractional model is what needs to be understood by Christians at large. He isn't telling people to clean their rooms because he said so as a religious authoritarian slave driver. He is telling them that by cleaning their rooms they are fulfilling their destinies in bringing about order to a world that is bent on their destruction. If spiritual fathers could understand as Peterson does, that their primary role is not to tell people what to do but to tell people why they are to do it (to be the embodiment of the archetypal hero by carrying your own cross), they transcend the role as teacher and actually become a father to another, then we could get somewhere as a church and world struggling with fatherlessness. The lesson we get from Peterson is that we become fathers (as he has) when we transmit identity to others, when we give them a why to the questions of life when everyone else is saying "jump on my bandwagon or else". The first way inspires men's passion and allegiance, the second approach is an appeal to fear.
Boldness and honesty while loving your neighbor. These are qualities that should set Christians apart from the darkness of the world that doesn’t have Christ and needs him desperately!

After watching much of Peterson's series on the Bible, I was very afraid that he is so effective as a speaker and academic that young people or less educated people rely on his responses to Christianity in order to define their own views. As Christians, we need to always be ready to give a reasoned defense (1 Pt 3:15), and Peterson, Ben Shapiro, and Sam Harris are making it all the more urgent.

That's why I don't always like the influence of these kinds of speakers because they don't really bring them to an understand of who Christ is, who they are as sinners, and the need to repent and turn their hearts to God. Yes I fully support what they speak concerning identity, sexuality, and marriage, but all this ideologies comes from God. I do believe the devil is using these people to his advantage because they arent born-again Christians. They can speak the bible all they want, but they'll never confess Jesus is Lord. 😢
Thanks for the reply! I agree. Depravity is where I start with everyone with the Gospel message. Peterson is astute in many areas of life, but, as usual, plagiarizes Biblical truth while calling the Bible a "myth." I wish I could debate him. I would make this distinction though. They are not born again. If you do not believe scripture is the inerrant word of God, you're not saved. If you do not delight in the Lord's teachings, to some degree that it affects your life, you are not saved. If you do not proclaim Jesus, you are not saved. All believers who have the Holy Spirit can and will understand and see the truth in the Word. The fact that Peterson is such a gifted academic, and studies scripture rigourously, shows how powerful the sin of pride can be.

mr self - The context of 1Peter 3:15 is suffering for the sake of Christ and maintaining a hopeful disposition, so when unbelievers take notice of your counterintuitive demeanor, they will be prompted to ask why are you so joyful despite your suffering, in which the believer will point that person to the source of their hope, namely, Jesus the Christ. The verse isn't just talking about defending the Christian hope in general. Context matters
Brilliant! Thank you. I think we can also learn from Dr Peterson: how to be an authority (Christians need to read the right books); and, how to speak on the right subjects. As well as the ones you mention, most importantly, his genuine compassion.
Also, on young men. I don't think his affect should be too surprising if you really think about it. We're in an age when many guys grow up without fathers and a lot more guy's who feel disenfranchised with the world. Jordan Peterson is someone who empowers young men, by essentially saying that they have something to offer if they get their act together, empathises with them deeply. It's just a shame that he's seems to be alone in this.
He also affects women who grew up with absentee dads. He is a father figure for us all. His calmness and lack of irritation makes it easier to "swallow the pill" of common sense.
Mothers have been telling young men to clean their rooms from the dawn of time and never once stopped to explain how that simple act is a key to changing the world. JBP unveils the hidden, essential WHY.
We dont need to discredit moms. They're not philosphers. They give birth and bring life into the world. Jordan can discuss deeper issues. Mom's are busy with diapers, broken arms, groceries, cooking and laundry, their career work, too, and many are single doing it.

This is perhaps the best and most fair analysis on Peterson's teaching and influence that I have heard from a Christian perspective (and I have heard many). Any Christian who is listening/reading Peterson should take the extra time to listen to Roberts. I feel like I have always had father figures at my church and the message of "cleaning my room" and finding purpose I always took for granted. It is sad to see that so many young men are left without that and I think when they go looking for that personal relationship with other guys to build them up, it could be at the church.
I first learned of Jordan Peterson last night when I watched a video on a discussion of "The Truth". As I was viewing this, everything he was saying I knew only Jesus could accomplish in someone. Herein is the crux of the issue. Jordan Peterson talks about the best human path is to desire and pursue truth and let all that is not truth in their lives burn up. Yet he makes a case to do this apart from God and the Blood of Jesus. I then listened to a couple other talks and saw his struggle between his intellect and the case for Jesus Christ being true. It is that video where he openly wept when talking about Jesus. I have come to the conclusion that what Jordan Peterson promotes is a false way and it is important that the Christian NOT get caught up in all the "spiritual feeling" or the "spiritual sounding talk" of Jordan Peterson. For in the end, he promotes humanism, has a humanistic view of practically everything and hell is full of people seeking to do what is right yet apart from the blood of Christ. Secondly, I felt his struggle in a video where he started crying when talking about Jesus yet not turning to Jesus. This is the trap of the human intellect and human pride. It is a clamp, a vice on the mind and keeps the mind blind from the things of God and the real TRUTH who is Jesus. I have prayed for Jordan Peterson and truly hope he is not far from the kingdom of God and gets on about the business of knocking on the door to the kingdom of God so he can step in through the blood of Jesus. For the Christian, beware of falling into the same trap that Jordan himself is in. What he says sounds "so right" and yet is "so wrong". Scripture, and only scripture is to be the rule for the Christian and Christ in you the hope of glory and eternal life. There is no other way. "Beware lest any man spoil you *through philosophy* and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, *and not after Christ* " (Colossians 2:8 KJV)
I think I agree with Bishop Barron on his views of Peterson. He's something of a reclaimer, like Joseph Campbell before him. He's revitalizing the story and the symbolic function in a world becoming more analytical. And with boys, he gave them the call to adventure, like the tribes of the past that would leave boys in the woods or have them journey through the cave. He showed them the woods, and he showed them the cave, he showed them the journey to become a man.
I've been an avid listener of Dr.Peterson, and i am praying for his conversion to be complete. Hes an "on his way to Christ" guy. Matter of grace and time. Also, his wife is a professed Christian so think all will come into fruition for my prayers. For me, Peterson is a phenomenon coz hes a practicing clinical psychologist (20years on his belt) seeing God in a different perspective. He's looking and finding God in a psychological perspective, which is very rare. Hes a genuine father/mentor/teacher who cares but still unable to grasp coz of one thing, faith in God. If faith will come, how powerful will this person become for Christ glory. For me, he's just like us before Christ called us unto Himself. I pray Dr. Peterson completes his journey finding Christ at the end. Shalom
So much to say about Peterson. In short I hope pastors can learn a bit about how to speak to men of all ages from Peterson. He is masterful in communicating hard subject matter.
I had already thought Jordan didnt have the bible as ultimate authority thank you for clarifying to us. Now hes a great guy dont get me wrong, he makes great arguments. Jordan Peterson's great appeal to young men particularly is the fact that he gives them reason to act morally and upright without bringing up God as a reasoning or bases
I know it's not stated here and I'm glad. But I really wish that people would stop painting Peterson as something he's not. He's does not claim to be a Biblical or Orthodox Christian (though he does seem like someone who is wrestling with Christianity and the bible). If people just took him at his word, literally because he is very careful about what he says, then I don't think there would be too much controversy about him with Christian circles.
Josh S I couldn't agree with you more. As a Christian myself, I think we have far too many problems than to feel concerned that Jordan might be leading people to astray with his teachings. There are pastors who are leading congregants to hell for crying out loud and we're worried about a psychologist who finds the Bible useful although he skirts around deep theological issues.
I love both John Piper and Jordan Peterson,i am a Christian and I also enjoy learning more about our mind and psychology,God made us-it's as important to understand ourselves as it is to understand God's word.
We need to learn these lessons, and speak powerfully from a Christian context. Dr Peterson's world-view is not the Christian one or the true one. We have the advantage but he is streets ahead of us!
I was profoundly impacted by his tatement regarding the existence of God when he refused to say whether he believes in God, but insisted on saying that he lives as though he does exist. I was concerned with his refusal to affirm God's existence and enthralled with his notion of living as though God exists. It is ultimately far much better to live as though God lives rather than believe and live otherwise.
I agree with Peterson's view on the importance of equality of opportunity rather than on equality of outcome. This is not because I feel that women (like me) will not be able to make it. But from experience, I have noted that I have equal innate mental faculties as a male - just that I choose to use them differently for my own satisfaction. For example, when I was in high school I had physics as a mandatory subject. I avoided learning circuits the whole year. I thought I am not capable of it - because I was just not getting it, class after class. But, a day before the exam - when it was necessary for me to learn the circuits - or fail, I learnt it in a day. That felt like an impossible feat, but I could do it because of necessity. So, the things I do not do, do not imply I cannot do them. So, I am confident in my capability and worth in that sense. *In India, students are streamlined to 'Arts', 'Commerce' or 'Science' stream in 11th grade based on their marks in 10th grade. At that time in India, the 'Science' stream had all these mandatory subjects - Physics, Chemistry, Math, Biology, English.

I followed Jordan for about 2 years, but not anymore, he has very interesting insights on many different topics, he says many good things that are true but also others that are pretty strange, not because i don't understand what he is talking about but because my discernment tells me he is up to something. Claims to be Cristian, but on an interview was unable to state that Jesus was literally risen from the dead, he went on to say something like it could have been metaphorical...look it up and judge for yourself, I don't quite trust his stand on Christianity so I just recommend any Christians out there to be careful with the information you are taking from him.
Todd Freil says he was a pastor for a decade before he was converted. We need to pray that Peterson be converted and make a public confession of faith. Obviously that would change his base but what a platform! Nothing is impossible for God!
After many years being a Christian, and in the last 10 years being hungry from the lack off depth in the church. It is was like "being alive again" listening to a man who put back the responsibility on human on all what happened to our life so we can do something about and also has put MEN in the place God want... as the responsible being for families. If he does not have Christ in his hard, believe me, God will see him as a Cornelio and will bring a Peter to complete the work. We need pastors and leaders with moral authority and who walk the talk.
He doesn't have God in his heart. When asked about whether he believes in God he gets uncomfortable and doesn't want to give a straight answer. I respect him, and it's so unfortunate how so many people hate and slander him, but I believe he could do so much good for God. Then again so could lots of people. Peterson is clearly quite infatuated with the triumphant nature of Christ and biblical perspective, if only he could really let The Son of Man in. I never could either, though. I believed in Christ and God but I was an enemy and a betrayer until a certain day. Hopefully Peterson will choose to believe on Christ.
Jason Peterson has never claimed to be a Christian, but he is living as though the life of Jesus is the ideal for people to aspire to. That's the problem with deep thinkers who are so intelligent, they can't grasp the simplicity of the Gospel. But God is working on him, I believe. We all need to pray for him. It's hard not to respect him as a human being.
I love Desiring God because they address trends in our culture directly, and from a Biblical perspective. They don't pretend like our culture is invisible. Great job tapping into the concerns of young Christians who want to honor God, yet also learn from Peterson's practical wisdom.

Praise God for this video. I just learned about him and he couldn't say Jesus was God. That turned me right off, plus some of his connections with certain organizations was suspicious.
A fantastic analysis of the phenomenon. I think Peterson operates best when he isn't dealing heavily with scripture. There are three things I see about his use of scripture that I didn't find in this video, but are worth noting. 1. He has at times said that his point-of-view is Christian, when he is asked about where it stands theologically. This is a problem, because Jordan only says this as a technicality; merely admitting to the usefulness of the Bible toward defining founding principles of living, not that he is a believer, but I think this is confusing to most people. This also makes me wonder if he finds no serious issues with how he uses scripture in his career as a public intellectual. 2. He has, at many times, revealed in videos that many of his atheist followers told him that they are giving the Bible a chance again after watching his lectures on some of the books of Genesis, many of them seeing it more fit to term themselves "Christian Atheists" now, or some other dual-position name that suggests an acknowledgement of the Bible as merely useful in a deeper way. That there is any reason that gets them digging into the Bible is a plus, but at some point they need to understand what Peterson may never tell them: his discoveries of valuable founding principles in scripture are a byproduct of scripture being Truth and inerrant, not of realizing the Bible is sophisticated myth, created strictly out of careful human insight across time. 3. He does admit to a transcendent nature of scripture, to highlight that an acknowledgement of the transcendence is critical to meaning, not going farther to say that they should be ascribed to God, generically, or Jesus, specifically. There is a video out there where he debates with an atheist woman, using the necessity of a transcendence that sits underneath purpose to seriously challenge how her thought patterns, which don't account for this, could reveal meaning to her. What that transcendence may be, however, well, didn't seem as critical to Peterson for the discourse. I really hope Jordan Peterson listens to this Desiring God video, for both an accurate summary of his own influence and for clarity on how his analysis of the Bible can open the eyes of many to its effectiveness while still manage to mischaracterize it at the same time. As many would say, it isn't always that we are merely reading the Bible that allows God to be revealed, but why we are reading it.
He's not what I'd call highly religious but he's a free thinker who speaks common sense. Still less harmful than some who are calling themselves teachers but guide people into darkness.
What is the problem? Problem occurred when some people decide to disregards fact in order to push their ideas! Men and women are not same, but are (and should be) equal in life. Meaning - each sex (or gender, if you like) have it's own capabilities to do some things better and that is completely normal and desirable, because no one of us (men or women) is not meant to be on his/hers own, but to cooperate together for mutual benefit. Every normal person understand this and every normal person have respect to other (i don't think we should ever use term 'opposite') gender. We are made to work, live and thrive together.

I’m a follower of Jesus and have been for many years. I attempt to treat people like Jesus did and try to reach people with the best balance of grace, love, and truth. That being said, JP’s teachings have radically changed my perception of my time and of my every day habits. Never has it been to well articulated to me that every moment/decision of my day sways the world a little bit towards heaven or a little bit towards hell. Which in retrospect seems obvious, but JP is so well versed in his profession and in the biblical stories on which he lectures, I can’t help but feel conflicted on admiring him so much yet, at the same time, hoping he one day sees Jesus as the Literal son of God and not just a metaphorical goal for every human.

Amen. I read an article recently by a Christian woman who I agreed with. She made the same point I've always thought about Jordan. God uses all people for his works. The fact is regardless of where Jordan ends up many, many people have thought about the bible again, or for the first time. We know God is active in this time. Preparing and awakening hearts. Perhaps Jesus is preparing the soil for many souls to grow and come to him. As always, as for us, we are to faithfully defend the gospel whenever we can.

I watched that video. You should really stop slandering people. This specious second rate pseudo-intellectual critique is meant to damage a man, and not consider his ideas . The speaker has in his mind an idea about Jordan Peterson. An idea along these lines: Jordan Peterson is the racist intellectual godfather of the alt-right. Now, that isn't accurate. If one has listened to Peterson for any period of time, he neither glorifies Hitler nor shrinks in his criticism of the alt-right. However, his critics, and they are many, consistently attempts to link him with alt-right ideology. I suspect this gentleman in the proposed video is in that group. I challenge "oh brother" to comb through Peterson's video's or talks, by now there are hundreds available on the internet, and post the link where he downplays the holocaust, admires Hitler, or fans the flames of love for the alt-right. Any one of those will do.

I met J. Peterson, chatted with him. Very gentle and kind man.
I don't think pastors should aim to just "speak with authority" like Jordan. Part of what makes him popular is his ability to speak with authority AND compassion AND without hipocrisy. He has his own life together, but he is not blind to the actual struggles people have in doing that nor let's them off the hook for accomplishing it. That's the real things pastors should take from him.
My wife introduced me to Jordan Peterson. She had gone through much suffering in her life at the hands of others. Jordan Peterson's lectures helped her weather the storm and emerge strong. I too have come to reset a lot of what was wrong in my approach as well from his lectures. I'm 49 and I still needed a strong father figure even at this stage in my life. May he recover well & soon.

@Desiring God, please please acquire John Piper's opinion on this matter and that of other prominent fellows of the Christian theology. I am a young man who has endured a lot in my life as I assume most have. Jordan Peterson's collection of various works have been a God-send for me and I dare not rely *too* heavily on them without proper scriptural guidance brought forth by learned Christian elders and leaders but as it stands, Peterson's writings have helped shaped who I am. The Bible has been and always will be my full and foremost foundation but Peterson's work is invaluable in this day and age at least to a man such as myself. There is a lot to unpack about Jordan Peterson and to have more experienced Christian theologians take a stab at it would be beneficial to creating a strong and well-versed stance on the issue. I would say that if you need JP to help you live life, but the Bible is your "go to," then you may be in the wrong church where you should be getting discipled by those in the church with more maturity to help you through things. JP has a secular viewpoint....just see how he answers where meaning comes from....clearly anti-biblical ("anti" meaning not derived from).

I’ve watched a large number of Dr. Peterson’s interviews and his lectures. I think one of the things that makes it difficult for people to pin him down or to categorize him as is the fact that we don’t know the depth of his knowledge. He has brought such an awakening to Scripture among the common man and an awareness to the Divine in the mundane things that we can’t simply dismiss the things he says or does as “academic” or “psychological” - even though he enters into those realms of thought. One of the things I find appealing about his approach to philosophy is that you can actually see him learning in real time. He often mentions this. He doesn’t just share what he knows; he tries to go beyond what he already knows which, in many ways, enters the realm of faith. And faith, as we know, goes beyond head knowledge. For example, if you watch his interviews in a chronological manner, you begin with the controversy of politics in Canada, then in Channel 4. As I would put it, “People often come for the memes, but they stay for the meaning.” You can actually see him change and grow in his beliefs over time in a span of 2 years, and each time his respect for Christ and His teachings grew in considerably. In one interview he even mentioned specifically that the battle he is in isn’t political or psychological, but theological. (I can’t remember the radio station in Britain who interviewed him but you can look it up. It’s only audio.) For me, what I see in Dr. Peterson is an example of a modern day Joseph or Daniel or Nehemiah. A person who has a considerably large political reach but has a strong spiritual edge that clearly points to Christ. And if you don’t believe that he points to Christ, I don’t think you’ve taken the time to examine him long enough. It’s strange, while he’s not “Christian” in the traditional sense, it seems that he also puts far greater value in Christ than most Christians do. And I do believe God is using him. How many pastors would have churches sit down for a 2 hour lecture about Cain and Abel? Yet people pay money to fill stadiums just to hear this man talk about just that, and other biblical stories. God is doing something here, and I think dismissing it as simply “academic” or “psychological” will do the church a great disservice. Had we lived during Joseph’s time, or Daniel, or Nehemiah, I don’t think we would theologically agree with everything they say or do, but it’s where their life is pointing towards that God determines whether or not they accomplished their purpose. “Now when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed.” -Acts 13:36. David is a model in the Christian faith, but we obviously don’t agree with everything he said or did. Nevertheless, the LORD said he accomplished God’s purpose in his generation. I believe He is doing the same with Dr. Peterson. The last thing I’ll share is this. Dr. Peterson is a father-figure. And the greatest damage the world has taken, other than sin itself, is fatherlessness. You remove fathers, you break marriage. You break marriage, you break families. You break families, you break societies. I believe God is using Dr. Peterson, in many ways, to be a father to the fatherless. I am one of them. And I believe in Christ the Son of God. If we spend time in the Word, in prayer, in fellowship and in service to others, I think we can recognize the Spirit of our Father when it comes to our attention. And that’s what I see happening with the whole Jordan Peterson phenomenon. Our Father is overshadowing him for a greater purpose for our sake. There are more things happening here than I can explain, but I hope I was able to help you sort out your perspective on Dr. Peterson.

Absolutely. I needed Jordan to direct me in the direction of human behavior. Then I moved my focus to God and us as his creation. I started a RUclips channel reading texts my dad sends me. It’s soul nourishment in under 4 minutes. Helps hearing the struggles of other people and how they deal with those troubles.
Something that gives me hope is that I read Jung before Christ revealed Himself to me. His writing opened me up to the Bible. This is my prayer, that those who follow Peterson, will also be able to hear and respond to the Holy Spirit.
I believe that is Peterson's purpose, wether he knows it or not. Young people today are almost alien to the previous generations of humans, and an unorthadox, analytical, scientific approach to spirituality and faith, I believe, may be the only way to reach them.
By definition, those not responding to the Holy Spirit are rejecting Him out of their own decision via suppression and not because God is withholding their response; God will not override their free will. John 16; Romans 1.

I appreciate Jordan Peterson for the knowledge he displays. I learnt quite a lot of helpful things from him. He talks about the scriptures in the context of how he understands them and he is emphatic about the role of God in man finding meaning in life, albeit not in the way that many Christians are used to.
He speaks with authority, as alluded to in this episode, and he is highly illustrative in his speeches. I am quick to recommend him to friends - long-term church going individuals like me - who the churches failed to teach and preach the undiluted gospel to. I am stopping short of saying he was instrumental to my getting to pay more attention to my faith. Today, I know the Bible has the details on the purpose of life and I am fully satisfied studying it with the help of the holy spirit. Maybe it is just a mystery that God would use different ways to get the attention of those he loves.
Peterson may be serving a role as a bridge between those who are broken and those who are ready to hear the Word.
His videos explaining Christianity are what made me reconsider the religion I was raised under up until my parents divorced, he’s never said anything negative about it so I don’t know how anyone could criticize someone who’s only reawakened peoples faith

Jordan Peterson’s lectures on personal responsibility have truly changed my life. He has only driven me closer to God and made me love Gods word even more. I think God is truly using him, and I now pray that Jordan will truly find the truth of Jesus Christ’s divinity and come to a full understanding that Jesus is Lord and Savior. He is dealing with a lot with his wife’s health currently, and I hope it leads him into Gods arms. We can only pray.
To be blunt: I have an gift from God (The God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob - I am that I am) to see an anointing on someone. Anointing(s) are very rare but seemed to showing up more often. Jordan Peterson has an anointing. He sincerely has reverence towards God. On some level Jordan Peterson must know this. The first few minutes of watching him on line - I laughed with great joy - He has a voice in the wilderness and has risen from No where from the general Christian church perspective - and then I cried. I have felt genuine compassion from Peterson about young men that I haven't seen in pastors for years perhaps even centuries. A lot of pastors in the past and today care more about women in the church because by and large women submit better to clergy authority than men, so it's easier to pastor women than men. When I was a youth group leader I saw this all the time so I just focused on the young men in my church. Plenty of leaders where focusing on women as it was back then.

norton snale God can of course use anyone and anything to draw someone to Himself. Nothing is impossible for Him!! however that doesn’t mean that Jordan Peterson should teach a theology that is contrary to God. It’s not God’s plan for pastors and teachers and leaders to teach something incorrect about Him and His Word. That doesn’t mean He can’t or won’t use Jordan Peterson right now but it does mean that God calls Jordan to teach His full truth whether God will use Jordan right now or not. That’s not the point. The point is more that God calls Jordan as a person in a position of power and authority to teach God’s full truth and use and view scripture (God’s Word) the way God desires and calls him to.

Because the act (in your scenario) originated from this man, not from God. It may be God’s plan or it might not be. It isn’t perfectly motivated. It is, therefore, incongruous with God. If, instead, this nasty and sinful person gave himself to God and asked for His guidance when actively herding others into His flock and influencing others then the act would be perfect. You must “know” God in order to recognize and walk in His footsteps.

Thank you so much for addressing this. I’ve watched many of doctor Peterson’s videos and while I was impressed by his convictions and compassion, I knew that there were areas in his way of thinking that did not match with biblical Christianity. Thank you for shedding some light on this topic.
Dr. Peterson has made it clear faith is more complicated than a simple belief in God or the resurrection. He's not just being analytical. He's elevating faith above the simple minds of non-believers. Because of him, I've drawn closer to our Lord. My local pastors have had little influence.
Jordan Peterson’s magnetism comes from having an explanation for WHY it’s important. Not just “do this because it’s good”. He offers answers to their internal, long held beliefs and questions.

I’m a pastor and I have received a lot from him. The culture wars had created a Unitarian left within the church as well and his views push against that. There are a lot of young men in my church who talk a lot of theology but simply can’t get their life together or take responsibility for any of their actions. Theologically, I think Peterson’s views verges on Gnosticism at times and we need to be discerning of that, however, he seems to be a man in the process of finding God. We should pray for him and encourage him and hope that Jesus will be the king of his heart.

Excellent conversation and as a female and a listener of Jordan Peterson for years and hours I would love to hear a follow-up in 2023/24 by Alistair. Jordan has strengthened my faith in Christ though I recognize the reality he so honestly articulates of his reticence to fully embrace orthodox Christianity. I wonder if it is his genuine integrity that restrains him to do so. God knows and yes discernment so critical. Is he perhaps discerning to the extent paralysis of analysis??? I have been in and out of AA for 25 years, once had 10 years in row and was fully involved on every level in service and sponsorship. I can tell you that Jordan Peterson reminds me of the fellowship of AA every time I hear about him. He has brought light to those who needed it so, if you do believe in Jesus in your heart then you will know where that light truly emits.
I love Jordan Peterson. I think he mentioned he believes in God, i pray that he is saved. Glory be to God!
Alastair's assessment of Dr. Peterson's beliefs regarding the Bible doesn't quite capture the complexity. He certainly refers to the Bible as being a true myth and allegorical. However, I've listened to many videos of him expressing his beliefs on this subject and on a few of them, when expressly asked if he believes, for instance, if Jesus literally and physically rose from the dead in the sense that orthodox Christians believe that He did, he pauses as he so often does and responds, "I don't know" to the chagrin of the interviewer in one particular interview I was listening to who was hoping Jordan would repudiate that possibility. This interviewer seemed very let down that Jordan would even allow for that possibility but he stood his ground. I was impressed with that, considering he is obviously not a regenerate believer. He has said that the fact it is true myth and allegorical on many levels, does not preclude it being true, also, in a literal sense. In the aforementioned interview, he went on to say he intended to have a very focused study on the Bible to understand it better. We should pray for him. He seems to me like someone with a seeker's heart.
Agreed. I find it sad that so many people are willing to critique this man when we each have gone through our own journeys and none of us are perfect. God comes through in His own way and in His own time. Jordan has helped many thousands of people live better lives, and for that we should be thankful. In terms of his own personal spiritual journey, I too pray that he will find God and believe in Christ as our true Saviour (if he has not done so already).
I do not see how someone can believe Jesus rose from the dead with such certainty without infallible proof. I see Jordan as someone who wrestles with God and is willing to ask deep questions. Jordans tests his belief so much because he knows where shaky religious beliefs lead aka the 20th century.
@@christianporter6357 I personally choose to believe despite the lack of infallible proof. That's the point of faith. And that's not to say I don't have my doubts as well from time to time. That's one of the reasons I enjoy Peterson so much, just like you said: his tendency to always test his beliefs and dig deeper. Wrestling with God (or any prevalent narrative, for that matter) is necessary to have any sort of truly meaningful beliefs.
@@geraldwilliams5320 This where I see most Christians interpreting the Bible wrong. The interpretation that by Believing that God is real and that Jesus rose from the dead in a literal sense is incorrect. Because if you believe something you will act if it is true. Too many Christians say that they believe In God but do not act as though He is real. So if the Bible is interpreted in a metaphorical sense then you will see that actions that embody Christ based on belief will allow you to transcend evil. Also if you have faith that embodying Christ will allow you to transcend evil you will act as though God is real. But if you believe that being a Christian is based on only believing something to be true and not acting as if it is true then you don’t actually believe something.
We can't just respond to authority that is attractive though. The biblical prophets authority was God's authority. The apostle Paul said he did not speak with the enticing words of man's wisdom but in simple easy to understand language. Pastors need to get more of GOD not more of Jordan Peterson. While I do like JP I don't think he is or should be a learning tool for Pastors. I think this actually very dangerous because he is a philosopher first and although attractive his philosophies are assembled from human reasoning in priority to God's reasoning. God has told us to meditate day and night in His word, not JP word. God wants us to have our minds transformed by the renewing of our minds to God's word.

JP is without doubt an intellectually attractive man and the fact that he quotes scripture can seem somewhat appealing also to Christians, but Christians need to be very careful they don't frustrate and confuse his teachings where they are subtly similar but DIFFERENT from God's teachings.
Remember, the devil quoted scripture to Jesus.
In conclusion I would say if anyone follows or listens to JP arguments I would advise to keep it distinctly separate from God's word.
JP has a book with 12 lessons for life but God has a books with thousands of lessons in it and each one has been rubber stamped by Almighty God. What more do we or Pastors need. If God sends a man then GOD will equip a man. God is no man's debtor, He gave Moses everything he needed.

Most of these "man's wisdom" arguments usually seem like ways of shirking the responsibility of having coherent theologies or the responsibility to make honest attempts to discover truth when it's complex. Christianity has been greatly harmed by people who think they can say any ol' dumb thing and that everyone should take their uninformed opinions as gospel because they claim to have the Holy Spirit, or claim to base it on the Bible, and make themselves and by extension Christ out to be a silly ignorant liar.
If you think that religion, philosophy, and science can be reconciled then there's no danger in taking in their ideas as long as you verify them with scripture. Having that skill is another discussion.
I think your position might be overly fearful, though I do appreciate its carefulness.
We should vet every specific thing we learn from this phenomenon, but a takeaway like

Pastors should feed His sheep the word of God. When we're living life together we should have the word of God throughout, but if you think all someone needs in dealing with depression (or a lack of self control or structure etc.) is the right verse, then we disagree.
God is not indebted to man. Every breath Jordan Peterson breaths, and John Piper, and every pastor and serial killer breaths is made possible by God. How could he owe Jordan Peterson anything, or owe Bill Gates anything just because pastors prepare for sermons using Microsoft Word?
Phillipians 1:15-18 makes me think that it's not so much something to fear if Peterson's example informs some christians trying to more effectively spread the gospel of more effective techniques. So the techniques/wisdom might be a smidge "of the world", but if we employ them to further the gospel, Paul rejoices.
Even that would be a compromise kind of, except that it isn't wrong to use insights into psychology or science or history or skills in writing or speaking learned outside of the Bible. Paul was taught by Gamaliel, who taught languages, logic, manners etc.
But yes, we should be quite careful to avoid alluring "wisdom" that isn't true wisdom. All true wisdom is from God.
I was what you could call a disciple of Peterson back in the winter and spring of 2017. This description is very accurate. It is disappointing that he has had very few serious Christian contesters in the realm of philosophy and theology. Many of his assertions are valid from a Christian perspective, but he tries to use Nietzsche/Kant "arguments" that people should do good by sheer force of will with no rational justification! This is bound to deteriorate in the heart of the philosophical skeptic, as it did in mine. A friend gave me a book on philosophy by R.C Sproul, and it made everything click into place. The thinking Christian is a rational person, and has justification for their faith. One must not hold up their faith by arbitrary subjective willpower.

The best way that I can compare and contrast Jordan Peterson and what I think of when I think of a traditional pastor is....
As stated in the video both preach oh, yes. But, Jordan Peterson's mode of preaching is truly to teach. Whereas pastors to me have a goal of convicting and converting, nothing wrong with that, but it lends itself to coming away with more questions than answers and with feeling like I wasn't being taught but was being indoctrinated.
Now I don't feel like the pastor's that I'm a describing are "wrong", but I feel like there should be more TEACHING - leave the Holy Spirit to do the convicting and converting. Give me the knowledge that I need to make an informed decision. Knowing that it's not the pastor that does the converting but the Holy Spirit. Feed my spirit with knowledge.
With that said, because I know Jordan Peterson's views on Jesus Christ and the resurrection I listen to him with extreme caution. But, I feel like he does a better job of helping me to understand the Bible than most pastors ive encountered in person or online. I feel like pastors are so scared to teach from or ABOUT anything other than the Bible or to make the Bible relatable in any way. I walk away feeling like it's "theology" and not REAL - and thus like it's unattainable. It seems like it's either that extreme, or the other extreme where preachers like the Prosperity Gospel preachers read a verse and then spend an hour telling a story that has nothing to do with that verse.
I wish pastors would take the time to teach, I think that is what actually grips people's hearts - it's like a good parent who instead of just saying do this and don't do that, they actually take the time to explain why! not just because I said so, or just because the Bible said so. Take the time to help me to understand!
Speaking of time, with the economics of church today where pastors are having to rent out schools by the hour or recreation centers by the hour, and even when I'm in actual Church buildings, the time limits make everything feels so businesslike. It's either a sermon that must end by 10 a.m. sharp so the pastor can Rush his other campus across town and preach, it's either that or a long drawn-out sermon where the word is not really broken down and it's overly emotional followed by hour of church "announcements" and events - just ceremony.
I honestly feel like Jordan Peterson does a better job of espousing the word Then I get in any church that I've been to. now i will say I do like things like John Piper's videos where he does like a 10-minute Bible study, but I think people are craving something more tangible. I don't just want to know what the Greek word for this or that is, or how this first traces to that first, help make it practical and alive to me! Help me to see that not just because the Bible says it's true that it's true, But help me to see that it's ACTUALLY true!
I know there's a huge emphasis on faith and the future Promises of God in Christianity, but I also and I'm convinced that God's word is applicable to my life right now. and not just in the way that the Prosperity Gospel preachers preach. For an example of what I mean by that, look no further than Jordan Peterson's teaching. He talks heavily about suffering but also about how that suffering is worth it if I I am living the truth right now. Here and now! I feel like this is where Jordan Peterson excels.
I feel as though for the first time the Bible feels real to me when I listen to Jordan Peterson explain things.

I am a Born again Christian, since 83, and my return from Beirut, I've been a believer since about two, when I got eye surgery in Barcelona, and got my left eye for the first time, and the rehab period, is the beginning of my life's memories. I have been endowed with a talent to fix things, always have, and from this, derived my faith in the first, but never "committed to it", until I was forced by circumstance to stop running.
Since childhood, a "navy brat" of three siblings, I've understood, when one tells the truth, anyone can say and see the same thing, and while descriptions might differ slightly, the truth will be seen, period. When a lie is put forth, we must consider it, like any other statement, and we either denounce it, having better knowledge, and intent to truth, or we must live "under it", whether as protagonists, propagating it, and becoming its partners, or we must reject it, either openly, inviting attack, or in silent revolt.
To go with it, almost always involves "personalizing it", and embellishing the lie, and the more who accept it, the more embellishment it is adorned with, and ever harder to accept. It can reach its peak, and most realize it can't be embellished anymore, and the effort then is pressed on "forcing belief", but up to that point, "liars" must add their bit, to make it "their story".
We can only deny lies of this sort, individually. We can well accept others with our own stance, be influenced, but we must choose in our own hearts, we will not accept even the notion, and we must choose so, because it is right, not because we want to. When we enter life with this knowledge, taught by practice, "watch and then do", we can grow up and into faith, well founded.
Most of us are born into life with limits on truth, mixed up families, and access to faith is available, but so is denial, with strong support. We cannot "know God", except that we allow God to move inside us, and change our "locks", such that his are the key and the only key. We can only be a "strong community" if we are a community made up of Strong Individuals, men, women, children, Fathers, Mothers, Sons, Daughters, each substantial as themselves, being groomed to assume their equal part in God's world".
We want very much, so often, to "come to God as a group", because the idea of facing "The Creator" one on one can be terrifying. When we do come, we find we face the love of our Father, in the body of Jesus, and we get to see the greatness of Creator, and his great Love, in the Son, and the terror recedes, as we realize the saving blood, shed for all to come to Him. I am blessed to simply know I have sinned, and have been forgiven.
I was introduced to Mr. Peterson’s videos from my non-christian chiropractor, who knew I was a believer and was adamant to tell me that he was listening to these “bible teachings” of Jordan Peterson. This blew my mind as I was faced down, back being cracked. Brad the chiro who I was praying for was interesting in bible study. Praise the Lord.
Turns out Jordan is quite articulate and interesting to listen to but, his “truth” is not quite enough to satisfy him. There’s some anger in his voice, some frustration and it’s sad to see Jordan get so close and yet be so far. I pray that the Lord will open his eyes to see The Truth of Jesus, which will be truth enough for Jordan’s mind to be fully blown.
Problem will be then if he becomes a Christian, would his messages/popularity remain? No. He would loose it all. That may be a hard pill for him to swallow.
Bible literacy is key brothers and sisters. Fundamental to our walk. Lots of “teachers” out there that can make us stumble.
Nick Smith I have to disagree. Peterson's main message is about taking responsibility and accountability for your life. If he becomes a Christian his message wouldn't change and neither would political opinions. They also noted that his message is heavily influenced by Christianity.

Jason - I don't sound like that at all, friend. Maybe the Lord is using Peterson to bring attention to the Scriptures, but it does not "appear" that Peterson has submitted Himself at the feet of Jesus as Lord. That's all I'm saying
I attended his lecture when he was in my town. He comes off as entirely genuine in person. He has a very powerful presence, but it's his genuine caring for people and wanting to see them succeed that really draws you in. I am a very devoted Christian, and I don't have a problem with the way he uses the scriptures. In some ways he reminds me of Dennis Prager, who has his rational biblical commentary on Exodus from the Jewish perspective that I've been listening to. It's almost like they're trying to sell religion on this rational basis. It feels like it's this scientific/secular age we live that is driving people to take this tactic. It's almost as if they're begging people not to totally reject the wisdom of the past just because it's wrapped up in a story people think is unbelievable. I don't know how effective it is, but I find their discussions of scripture interesting even if I don't agree with everything they say.

This is one of the better synopses of Peterson by Christian commentators yet was saddened to hear the guest get sloppy with his take on what Peterson actually said about Scripture. He read the excerpt yet maimed the totality. Peterson is *very* precise in his speech in general, perhaps even more so in print. He doesn't merely attribute Scripture abstract evolutionary socio-biological curation, he is inferring mediums by which something much bigger (ostensibly God) has woven these myriad dimensions of reality and manifest His character. It is quite true Dr Peterson doesn't proclaim faith as Christians do, he is elusive but open, perhaps with either an over-developed fear of ideology and faith or perhaps with keen protection of the platform given the enemies who seek to destroy both faith and it's highly developed (and useful) presuppositions.
Peterson has even stated that he is not trying to be reductionist to the scripture. That he believes its more true than physical reality itself. He even stated that he doesn't discount the possibility of miracles as they are described in the Bible.
It was his lectures that turned this skeptical atheist into a full on bible believing Christ follower. God is definitely using him.
So pleased with the accuracy with which they deal with Dr. Peterson.
Thank you for the well balanced perspective, I have been following Peterson for a long time and have been hoping to see Christian's learn from him as I believe he is touching on some things we need to move towards. I agree Petersons work is doing a lot of good in helping people begin to look at scripture for a foundation for their lives, his teachings though by no means are going to get them to embrace the full gospel and the belief in literal truth that it requires.
At the same time Petersons attractional model is what needs to be understood by Christians at large. He isn't telling people to clean their rooms because he said so as a religious authoritarian slave driver. He is telling them that by cleaning their rooms they are fulfilling their destinies in bringing about order to a world that is bent on their destruction.
If spiritual fathers could understand as Peterson does, that their primary role is not to tell people what to do but to tell people why they are to do it (to be the embodiment of the archetypal hero by carrying your own cross), they transcend the role as teacher and actually become a father to another, then we could get somewhere as a church and world struggling with fatherlessness.
The lesson we get from Peterson is that we become fathers (as he has) when we transmit identity to others, when we give them a why to the questions of life when everyone else is saying "jump on my bandwagon or else". The first way inspires men's passion and allegiance, the second approach is an appeal to fear.
Boldness and honesty while loving your neighbor. These are qualities that should set Christians apart from the darkness of the world that doesn’t have Christ and needs him desperately!
That’s why knowing and loving God with all your heart and mind and soul and strength has to come first so we know what is true!
I am very pleased you chose to discuss this man, thank you! After watching much of Peterson's series on the Bible, I was very afraid that he is so effective as a speaker and academic that young people or less educated people rely on his responses to Christianity in order to define their own views. As Christians, we need to always be ready to give a reasoned defense (1 Pt 3:15), and Peterson, Ben Shapiro, and Sam Harris are making it all the more urgent.

That's why I don't always like the influence of these kinds of speakers because they don't really bring them to an understand of who Christ is, who they are as sinners, and the need to repent and turn their hearts to God. Yes I fully support what they speak concerning identity, sexuality, and marriage, but all this ideologies comes from God. I do believe the devil is using these people to his advantage because they arent born-again Christians. They can speak the bible all they want, but they'll never confess Jesus is Lord. 😢
Thanks for the reply! I agree. Depravity is where I start with everyone with the Gospel message. Peterson is astute in many areas of life, but, as usual, plagiarizes Biblical truth while calling the Bible a "myth." I wish I could debate him.
I would make this distinction though. They are not born again. If you do not believe scripture is the inerrant word of God, you're not saved. If you do not delight in the Lord's teachings, to some degree that it affects your life, you are not saved. If you do not proclaim Jesus, you are not saved. All believers who have the Holy Spirit can and will understand and see the truth in the Word. The fact that Peterson is such a gifted academic, and studies scripture rigourously, shows how powerful the sin of pride can be.

mr self - The context of 1Peter 3:15 is suffering for the sake of Christ and maintaining a hopeful disposition, so when unbelievers take notice of your counterintuitive demeanor, they will be prompted to ask why are you so joyful despite your suffering, in which the believer will point that person to the source of their hope, namely, Jesus the Christ.
The verse isn't just talking about defending the Christian hope in general. Context matters

Also, on young men. I don't think his affect should be too surprising if you really think about it. We're in an age when many guys grow up without fathers and a lot more guy's who feel disenfranchised with the world. Jordan Peterson is someone who empowers young men, by essentially saying that they have something to offer if they get their act together, empathises with them deeply. It's just a shame that he's seems to be alone in this.
He also affects women who grew up with absentee dads. He is a father figure for us all. His calmness and lack of irritation makes it easier to "swallow the pill" of common sense.
Mothers have been telling young men to clean their rooms from the dawn of time and never once stopped to explain how that simple act is a key to changing the world. JBP unveils the hidden, essential WHY.
We dont need to discredit moms. They're not philosphers. They give birth and bring life into the world. Jordan can discuss deeper issues. Mom's are busy with diapers, broken arms, groceries, cooking and laundry, their career work, too, and many are single doing it.

This is perhaps the best and most fair analysis on Peterson's teaching and influence that I have heard from a Christian perspective (and I have heard many). Any Christian who is listening/reading Peterson should take the extra time to listen to Roberts. Many Christians are fine criticizing Peterson's theology but few actually take the challenge in taking in what Peterson has to say to Christians. Thank You, God Bless.
I feel like I have always had father figures at my church and the message of "cleaning my room" and finding purpose I always took for granted. It is sad to see that so many young men are left without that and I think when they go looking for that personal relationship with other guys to build them up, it could be at the church.
I first learned of Jordan Peterson last night when I watched a video on a discussion of "The Truth". As I was viewing this, everything he was saying I knew only Jesus could accomplish in someone. Herein is the crux of the issue. Jordan Peterson talks about the best human path is to desire and pursue truth and let all that is not truth in their lives burn up. Yet he makes a case to do this apart from God and the Blood of Jesus. I then listened to a couple other talks and saw his struggle between his intellect and the case for Jesus Christ being true. It is that video where he openly wept when talking about Jesus. I have come to the conclusion that what Jordan Peterson promotes is a false way and it is important that the Christian NOT get caught up in all the "spiritual feeling" or the "spiritual sounding talk" of Jordan Peterson. For in the end, he promotes humanism, has a humanistic view of practically everything and hell is full of people seeking to do what is right yet apart from the blood of Christ.
Secondly, I felt his struggle in a video where he started crying when talking about Jesus yet not turning to Jesus. This is the trap of the human intellect and human pride. It is a clamp, a vice on the mind and keeps the mind blind from the things of God and the real TRUTH who is Jesus. I have prayed for Jordan Peterson and truly hope he is not far from the kingdom of God and gets on about the business of knocking on the door to the kingdom of God so he can step in through the blood of Jesus.
For the Christian, beware of falling into the same trap that Jordan himself is in. What he says sounds "so right" and yet is "so wrong". Scripture, and only scripture is to be the rule for the Christian and Christ in you the hope of glory and eternal life. There is no other way. I think I agree with Bishop Barron on his views of Peterson. He's something of a reclaimer, like Joseph Campbell before him. He's revitalizing the story and the symbolic function in a world becoming more analytical. And with boys, he gave them the call to adventure, like the tribes of the past that would leave boys in the woods or have them journey through the cave. He showed them the woods, and he showed them the cave, he showed them the journey to become a man.

I've been an avid listener of Dr.Peterson, and i am praying for his conversion to be complete. Hes an "on his way to Christ" guy. Matter of grace and time. Also, his wife is a professed Christian so think all will come into fruition for my prayers. For me, Peterson is a phenomenon coz hes a practicing clinical psychologist (20years on his belt) seeing God in a different perspective. He's looking and finding God in a psychological perspective, which is very rare. Hes a genuine father/mentor/teacher who cares but still unable to grasp coz of one thing, faith in God. If faith will come, how powerful will this person become for Christ glory. For me, he's just like us before Christ called us unto Himself. I pray Dr. Peterson completes his journey finding Christ at the end. Shalom

Jordan Peterson's great appeal to young men particularly is the fact that he gives them reason to act morally and upright without bringing up God as a reasoning or bases
I know it's not stated here and I'm glad. But I really wish that people would stop painting Peterson as something he's not. He's does not claim to be a Biblical or Orthodox Christian (though he does seem like someone who is wrestling with Christianity and the bible). If people just took him at his word, literally because he is very careful about what he says, then I don't think there would be too much controversy about him with Christian circles.
Josh S I couldn't agree with you more. As a Christian myself, I think we have far too many problems than to feel concerned that Jordan might be leading people to astray with his teachings. There are pastors who are leading congregants to hell for crying out loud and we're worried about a psychologist who finds the Bible useful although he skirts around deep theological issues.

I love both John Piper and Jordan Peterson,i am a Christian and I also enjoy learning more about our mind and psychology,God made us-it's as important to understand ourselves as it is to understand God's word.
We need to learn these lessons, and speak powerfully from a Christian context. Dr Peterson's world-view is not the Christian one or the true one. We have the advantage but he is streets ahead of us!
I was profoundly impacted by his tatement regarding the existence of God when he refused to say whether he believes in God, but insisted on saying that he lives as though he does exist. I was concerned with his refusal to affirm God's existence and enthralled with his notion of living as though God exists. It is ultimately far much better to live as though God lives rather than believe and live otherwise.
I agree with Peterson's view on the importance of equality of opportunity rather than on equality of outcome. This is not because I feel that women (like me) will not be able to make it. But from experience, I have noted that I have equal innate mental faculties as a male - just that I choose to use them differently for my own satisfaction. For example, when I was in high school I had physics as a mandatory subject. I avoided learning circuits the whole year. I thought I am not capable of it - because I was just not getting it, class after class. But, a day before the exam - when it was necessary for me to learn the circuits - or fail, I learnt it in a day. That felt like an impossible feat, but I could do it because of necessity. So, the things I do not do, do not imply I cannot do them. So, I am confident in my capability and worth in that sense.
*In India, students are streamlined to 'Arts', 'Commerce' or 'Science' stream in 11th grade based on their marks in 10th grade. At that time in India, the 'Science' stream had all these mandatory subjects - Physics, Chemistry, Math, Biology, English.

I followed Jordan for about 2 years, but not anymore, he has very interesting insights on many different topics, he says many good things that are true but also others that are pretty strange, not because i don't understand what he is talking about but because my discernment tells me he is up to something. Claims to be Cristian, but on an interview was unable to state that Jesus was literally risen from the dead, he went on to say something like it could have been metaphorical...look it up and judge for yourself, I don't quite trust his stand on Christianity so I just recommend any Christians out there to be careful with the information you are taking from him.
Brother . Suggest me some good writers or speakers whom I can rely on for Christian faith . (Some that can give insights )
Todd Freil says he was a pastor for a decade before he was converted. We need to pray that Peterson be converted and make a public confession of faith. Obviously that would change his base but what a platform! Nothing is impossible for God!

After many years being a Christian, and in the last 10 years being hungry from the lack off depth in the church. It is was like "being alive again" listening to a man who put back the responsibility on human on all what happened to our life so we can do something about and also has put MEN in the place God want... as the responsible being for families. If he does not have Christ in his hard, believe me, God will see him as a Cornelio and will bring a Peter to complete the work. We need pastors and leaders with moral authority and who walk the talk.
He doesn't have God in his heart. When asked about whether he believes in God he gets uncomfortable and doesn't want to give a straight answer. I respect him, and it's so unfortunate how so many people hate and slander him, but I believe he could do so much good for God. Then again so could lots of people.
Peterson is clearly quite infatuated with the triumphant nature of Christ and biblical perspective, if only he could really let The Son of Man in. I never could either, though. I believed in Christ and God but I was an enemy and a betrayer until a certain day. Hopefully Peterson will choose to believe on Christ.

Jason Peterson has never claimed to be a Christian, but he is living as though the life of Jesus is the ideal for people to aspire to. That's the problem with deep thinkers who are so intelligent, they can't grasp the simplicity of the Gospel. But God is working on him, I believe. We all need to pray for him. It's hard not to respect him as a human being.

I love Desiring God because they address trends in our culture directly, and from a Biblical perspective. They don't pretend like our culture is invisible. Great job tapping into the concerns of young Christians who want to honor God, yet also learn from Peterson's practical wisdom.

Praise God for this video. I just learned about him and he couldn't say Jesus was God. That turned me right off, plus some of his connections with certain organizations was suspicious.
A fantastic analysis of the phenomenon. I think Peterson operates best when he isn't dealing heavily with scripture. There are three things I see about his use of scripture that I didn't find in this video, but are worth noting.
1. He has at times said that his point-of-view is Christian, when he is asked about where it stands theologically. This is a problem, because Jordan only says this as a technicality; merely admitting to the usefulness of the Bible toward defining founding principles of living, not that he is a believer, but I think this is confusing to most people. This also makes me wonder if he finds no serious issues with how he uses scripture in his career as a public intellectual.
2. He has, at many times, revealed in videos that many of his atheist followers told him that they are giving the Bible a chance again after watching his lectures on some of the books of Genesis, many of them seeing it more fit to term themselves "Christian Atheists" now, or some other dual-position name that suggests an acknowledgement of the Bible as merely useful in a deeper way. That there is any reason that gets them digging into the Bible is a plus, but at some point they need to understand what Peterson may never tell them: his discoveries of valuable founding principles in scripture are a byproduct of scripture being Truth and inerrant, not of realizing the Bible is sophisticated myth, created strictly out of careful human insight across time.
3. He does admit to a transcendent nature of scripture, to highlight that an acknowledgement of the transcendence is critical to meaning, not going farther to say that they should be ascribed to God, generically, or Jesus, specifically. There is a video out there where he debates with an atheist woman, using the necessity of a transcendence that sits underneath purpose to seriously challenge how her thought patterns, which don't account for this, could reveal meaning to her. What that transcendence may be, however, well, didn't seem as critical to Peterson for the discourse.
I really hope Jordan Peterson listens to this Desiring God video, for both an accurate summary of his own influence and for clarity on how his analysis of the Bible can open the eyes of many to its effectiveness while still manage to mischaracterize it at the same time. As many would say, it isn't always that we are merely reading the Bible that allows God to be revealed, but why we are reading it.

He's not what I'd call highly religious but he's a free thinker who speaks common sense. Still less harmful than some who are calling themselves teachers but guide people into darkness.

Problem occurred when some people decide to disregards fact in order to push their ideas!
Men and women are not same, but are (and should be) equal in life.
Meaning - each sex (or gender, if you like) have it's own capabilities to do some things better and that is completely normal and desirable, because no one of us (men or women) is not meant to be on his/hers own, but to cooperate together for mutual benefit.
Every normal person understand this and every normal person have respect to other (i don't think we should ever use term 'opposite') gender.
We are made to work, live and thrive together.
