  • Making some progress! Will have that Belt Parkway test ride soon!
So I used my ‘96 Fatboy as a coil tester, confirmed the coil was good even though it tested outside of my repair manual specifications. Confirming the likelihood that the module was the issue. So replaced the module (and sensor) with an Ultima (Dynatech) 2000i which is an all in one unit, relatively straight forward installation.
Once running got her warmed up and did what many probably think should have been a first step (and they may not be wrong) and flushed / changed the engine oil. Next test ride will be soon (after addressing one or two more issues) and one more step to Sturgis!

I just brought one of those bikes back from the dead recently. Same year & model. Mine was in worse shape.
I picked it up for $800 & it looked like it was dredged up from the bottom of the ocean. I went through it front to back.
overall cost of parts & purchase price was between 3 & 4 grand. It's a nice old girl now. At first I thought it was the uglyest
big twin I ever seen, but now I think she looks & runs alright. It's a fun bike to ride.

@@tta850 It's like the unwanted red headed step child that only a mother can love until you get to know it.
Easy maintanence. Mine is stripped down like yours. I got rid of the enclosed chain housing. The only problem
with that is parts aren't availible such as rear sprockets. The rear sprocket weighs about 10lbs. I'm gonna keep mine chain
& I have a rear wheel I want to eventually put on it so I can put a generic sprocket on it. I suppose you could put
a later model transmission in it to run a belt & get rid of the tapered clutch hub, but I 'think' you might
have to run a wider swingarm & put a later model primary assembly that matches the transmission. Plus a clutch
lever that matches the later style clutch cable. A nice 'O' ring chain should work good enough. It's a standard 530.
If you ever pull the clutch hub, put a re-enforcement ring on it so you don't split it at the keyway when tightening
it up. That's if it has the ABC clutch. The parts manual shows a dry clutch like the shovelhead. Mine is an ABC wet clutch.

    • @tta850
      @tta850  6 месяцев назад

@@toddk.5873 good info, question on the rear sprocket when I go on like Dennis Kirk it shows the rear sprocket (and front too) available and relatively inexpensive… is that not the right sprocket??? I’m leaning towards leaving the chain, will be digging into the enclosure soon. It’s listed as 530 pitch and 110 link, sound right? Also like you mine is a wet clutch (pulled the derby cover to check and see if it had oil for once lol) Thanks!

I love the EVO motor way better than Shovelhead and Panheads, I put a crane HI-4 ignition in mine in 1996 and haven't seen it since that is how great those motors run smooth. I have the 1986 FXST but when I get a chance I am going to get a FXR Low Rider or a FAT Boy EVO, By the way I am a mechanic and I have worked on tons of Panheads and Shovelheads and I would not trade one EVO for a hole truckload of either of them.

I agree from a Harley mechanic's point of view. They're not as pretty. I think of them as a refined knucklehead. 1936 to 1999.
The first year Evo 1984 needed some updates, but my 84 runs pretty good without them. I'd like to update the cylinder studs if
& when it becomes an issue.
