- Suggested in the comments was to try and adapt the newer style saddle bag mounting hardware, so a few parts off the interweb and let’s try to make it work.
Also what’s in the tour pack, seeing what the previous owner rode around with and hasn’t touched in 20 years!

A dab of dawn dishsoap will make installing grommets a heck of a lot easier than dry rubber against paint. Love the series, keep it up.

Make sure the front catch on the saddlebag lids are fully engaged...ALWAYS! I own a 1980 FLT Shovel, and will tell you original saddlebag parts for the early FLT's are like hen's teeth when you try and find them.
I had to find a lid and all the pieces on that lid, and actually carried a list in my wallet of the parts needed. Whenever I stopped at a Harley dealer, I'd ask the parts guy if they had any old stock, and after a few years, I had all the parts.
Moral of the story, don't lose a lid! LOL!!

@@tta850 the story is my ‘80 FLT belonged to a good friend who passed away from liver cancer about 30 years ago. On his death bed he gave me his motorcycle. He was literally in his death bed and surrounded by family. Very emotional for all of us.
Before I could get over to get the bike, his brother took it for a ride and didn’t latch the left lid correctly and lost it. After I got the bike I adapted a later lid with a different lock.
I rode the bike every 4-5 years just to keep things freed up inside but I always considered it to be my buddies bike, and I was just the custodian of the bike.
I had a motorcycle milestone this year with it being 50 years on Harleys. So with that milestone I’ve decided to go through my FLT and ride it on a regular basis. I know that’s what my friend would have wanted.
RUclips came through when it recommended this channel last night, new sub from me enjoying the old bike videos a lot.
oddly satisfying.
To save your bag lids…where the tab on the front of the bag goes through the a slot on the lid, after you put the top on, mark and drill a small hole in the tab part. Then put one of those “ hair pin” type clips through the hole on each bag.
That way, should the lid vibrate loose on the road, it can’t fly away.
Should the top rattle loose from the latch, You’ll hear it rattle, but the lid will still be there when you stop to investigate.
Even a cotter pin will work, carry a couple spares in case you drop one taking the lids on and off.
We been doing that forever, until they came out with the bags with real hinges.

My grandad used to collect beer cans before he passed. I don't remember if I ever got the chance to ask why but my guess is a little homage to his favorite beers in the garage/shed.
What he did was pop two holes in the bottom of the cans. One to pour, one to let new air in.
Then it looks unopened but does't have old beer in it that may ferment and pop the can in the wrong weather, which safe to say does not smell good.
Plus, He did it as a bought beer back in the day so he actually got the drink the stuff.
There's a bit of a charm that they're completely unopened though, even if the contents are unviable for human life, haha.

There's something satisfying about working on something that's really old. I feel it may be because of the techniques you can use. Not needing to be as gentle, can bash together ideas and solutions. Would love to have a project bike that I can practically throw around because it doesn't matter. Awesome way to learn and develop satisfaction and appreciation for. Maybe a cheap sport bike to turn into a track bike 🤔

Good video again. I still have the original Quarter turn clips on my saddle bags still in good shape. I took some rubber hose cut in half and taped pieces on the rails years ago and had no problems all these years.
I'd definitely suggest key rings through the holes in the front tabs on the lids and loctite for the latches. It's super fun looking for the lids alongside the road, lol.

I once got myself some of that foam pipe covering for waterlines. I liked it because it had a seam in it like wire loom. Three or four little pieces of electrical tape and it was there for years.
Amazing how you can fix little things that mean a lot and makes everything much better, Great job.

my 97 roadking had the hard bags with the same type 1/4 turn quick connects, my bags had a rubber bushing with a metal sleeve in it that the pin went through to the bracket on the other side. Had the rubber bushing on the bottom, worked well for the 23 years I owned it.
Moving right along on this bike. Piece by piece. Bolt by bolt. Beer by beer. Great job!

Great videos man hope you keep posting, I normally don’t comment but I wanted to throw out an idea on the backrest seat bracket It looks pretty simple to duplicate, 1/8” piece of metal from Home Chepo some drill bits and simple bends in a vice, then you still have the original from 1984 in tacked 👍🏼
Thank you! Thought about that but honestly the original backrest is in rough shape and has already been welded together a few times so I don’t think it’s too much of a loss to use it. Idk
boiling water helps manipulate rubber makes it soft and unlike dishsoap you have a better grip, Dish soap makes it all slippery it sort of works but a nightmare to hold while hold another part or if you need to squeeze it :)
I mount the hard bags on my 85 with 1/4 20 bolts. No rattles and easy to get off
I do the same, with big rubber fender washers inside and out. I used Allen heads and keep a small ratchet in one bag just for that. That way no one could rattle the bags around and get them off, as they can with the 1/4 turn stock latches.

Not this year, the plan is next year with the FLT Tour Glide. This year will be heading to Daytona on the Aprilia Tuono V4 again, so much fun!

I have a 93. Just got it all back together after replacing the starter which was nudged along by your videos so thanks for that and keep it up 👍

Don't cut up your attaching bolt, run to the local mower repair shop and pick up a round knob attaching bolt.
Gonna look into that, be nice to have a spare attaching bolt I’m sure at some point I’ll probably lose one lol
what size grommet did you use?
Not sure the exact size but it’s the same style as used in the 2014-2024 models and are readily available in the aftermarket 👍🏻
