Honestly, hearing that wavelanding has 10 frames of landing lag is a major mystery solved for me. The explainers I found for it over 15 years ago said you could do actions instantly, and I could see plainly that nothing I was performing out of wavelanding was instant.

The momentum argument here is very clear. As someone who's been in taht situation a lot, the regained confidence of "no, I know what he's doing, focus" can and does change everything when you need it.
Absolutely phenomenal breakdown. Just recently started play Melee (Yoshi) and been mostly practicing movement and tech skill. Accidentally did this a couple times and wasn't sure what happened. Awesome to have such a complete breakdown and practical applications to boot!
It still amazes me that amsa sqeezed a tournament win out of yoshi. He's the low tier god that we always wanted but never got until now because of the combination of amsa being willing to put blood, sweat, and tears into yoshi, and yoshi having the sauce to squeeze out in the first place. There have always been the renegades trying to get low tiers some results, but most of the time, the characters just didn't the juice to squeeze. Sorry for using the word "squeeze" so much. No better words off the top of my head for mix ups that would make the read better. I'm not going to the thesaurus for a yt comment.
agree that its super cool based off of where yoshi was considered 15 years ago, but in today's game yoshi is a top 7 or 8 character flat out. has only 3 outright losing matchups and is one of 2-3 character that can be considered a + matchup into marth. he's hardly a low (or even a mid) tier anymore.
@@oscarguzman3017 I mean he's the top representative yeah, but UCF was a major factor in yoshi being relevant. Shield dropping is essential to his kit, along with the fact that melee as a whole became more technically proficient. No one in 2008 was parrying or using double jump armor correctly, but gold 3 yoshis do those regularly now.
Great video! The title is super click baity though. Implying that amsa discovered some new groundbreaking yoshi tech and then it just ends up being an aerial interrupt
aMSa single handedly moving yoshi like halfway up the tier list, invent new tech, and then not even winning after doing so has to be the most insane thing I've seen in melee for a long time
One thing I don’t see a lot of yoshis do is an arial interrupt with Z so they instantly go into lightshield on land (if they hold it). It’s a pretty nice mixup and if you get hit you just slide off and get another mixup.
I was going to comment that the editing is always so insanely great, but I was also using Shazam to try to figure out what the song in the background was. I should've just watched to the end first haha absolutely wild you made the music too!
Absolutely wonderful video. I love how clearly you showed the differences in frames between the two techniques. It made it really clear what exactly is going on. I think it is fair to mention that if Amsa had used the wave dash landing, then Zain would need a frame perfect input to escape, and therefore it is likely he still would have been hit, but your point about the difference between a true combo and a potential combo still stands.

Good luck with it. It's an awesome game that only becomes more and more fun the better you get at it. Just remember to have fun, that's the most important thing.
Melee is insane! Imagine looking in a crystal ball 20 years ago about who would emerge a top melee player.. and the clouds revealed a red Yoshi. Used to be considered bottom tier, but boy is he uniquely and insanely good.
Dude, half of this is Greek to me and I can’t understand people computing frame perfect movements but hot dog your level of explanation and production (including the music) is perf👌🏽
A-cancelling in ult is something a lot of top players dont use, but its the same concept. Ive got dozens of clips using it in situations like this in ESmash just walking folks to the blast zone 😂
oh my god. We're getting down to frames now. I hope other characters get this level of optimization from their mains, too, I always felt at least half the cast had some crazy unearthed potential that could shift the tier list like tectonic plates.
So why is Yoshi able do perfect horizontal wave lands out of his double jump? I was kind of hoping the aspects of this tech being unique to Yoshi would be elaborated on lol
