I’m really glad to see Dice Throne: Season 2 so high up on Jeremy’s list. I think once it hits retail early next year it’s going to skyrocket on a lot of people’s radar for 2019. Also, I was a little surprised that we didn’t see any love for Architects of the West Kingdom. Either in the Top 10 proper or on anyone’s short list. For me it’s in my Top 3 for 2018 because of the innovative take on worker placement and overall presentation. I think Shem Phillips and S.J. Macdonald are stars in the making and might end up being a great duo of designers. Otherwise, excellent lists all around dudes.
I am surprised that Architects of the West Kingdom didn't make one of the lists. Architects and Underwater Cities are my two most anticipated games for this year. I already have Architects ordered and I hope to also get Underwater Cities when I am home in Jan/Feb. Not sure if it will be in the US by that time or not.
I haven't played as many 2018 games yet but here are a few of my favorites
Space Base - completely agree with you. It is just fun.
Maximum Apocalypse - A fun and challenging coop game
After the Virus - this is an outstanding deckbuilder where you get an ever increasing # of zombies to kill in your deck.
Carpe Diem - I want to hate the blandness of the game but I love these mechanics
Palm Island - It is amazing what they have been able to do with 17 cards. Great engine building.
HM - Grimm Forest - A beautiful game that is pure fun but it doesn't get asked for second plays from my groups or from myself.
Games that I am picking up when I am home - Sprawlopolis (KS) - Spirits of the Forest (KS) - Architects of the WK - Tiny Epic Zombies (KS) - Dual Powers (KS) - Shards of Infinity - Between Two Castles
In addition I will be attending a few conventions and playing through my friend's game library.
Not sure what other 2018 games I will play in the next month but that will give me a top 10 list by February even if I haven't played through every game I would want to.
They play so many games, great games can miss their lists.

Great list but I'm ever so slightly surprised that the very game you have sitting in the background, Architects of the West Kingdom didn't even make anyone's honorable mentions. I admit I don't get to play nearly as many new games as you guys do but I did I get to play Architects and I would put it in my top 10 for the year. Also, I would have to personally put Spirits of the Forest (by Thundergryph Games) in my top 10 as well. That game is such a satisfying set collection game despite how light it is, never mind how great the component quality of the deluxe edition is! The Grimm Forest is another great one that came out this year too. Oh and lastly, I would have to put my Kickstarter copy of Smiths of Winterforge on the list as well! A great worker movement game with pretty good artwork by the famous Ian O'Toole.

i agree with lots of them but i miss brass birminghan and lancashire
I definitely recommend Chronicles of Crime with screen mirroring on the TV...works great for groups. Great list guys!

I don't play nearly as many games as you guys, but Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig is really great, and my group has really enjoyed Just One for a light party game.
We didn't play that, but I JUST got a copy the day after Christmas. Looking forward to playing it.

Amazed that Brass: Birmingham did not make any position on any of the three lists (not even an honorable mention) - is it heavier than the games you guys tend to prefer? Everyone I've played it with has loved it!

Its easy to make sure that doesn't happen.. If you notice someone moving that direction, be sure to use the spot. I have played 5 times now. Also this will only work if the person gets multiple kelp in era 1.. But if the person is, then other players are not playing right. You should always have a double kelp production by end of era one, if not kelp will hurt you the entire game. Also this can also be offset but creating a strategy that works with the Special cards
I'm surprised you even got everdell. I refuse to support any dan yarrington games. He is a horrible human being. He is super shady and is a bane on the board game industry

Mr. Ekshun .... that’s borderline defamation so as a lawyer I can only advise that despite whatever issue you have with the publisher or game designer ( neither of which has been correctly stated) you would be best advised to zip it.
My tastes line up most with Jeremy (Dice Throne, Rising Sun, Chronicles of Crime) , but there's also a lot of games I need to play that released this year. Some notable absences for me would be Lords of Hellas, Cerebria, Warhammer 40k Kill Team, and Keyforge. Gaslands doesn't fall into the board game category as much, but since so many board gamers play X-wing, I'd say it's fair game. That game has been the most fun to play, model, kit bash etc. Miniature war gaming without breaking the bank.
We'll be the first to admit that we won't likely have much in the way of miniatures games on our lists. We're just more in the board game scene with our personal tastes. You have some interesting picks though.
I own the original Betrayal and pull it out every few years. Had no idea the Legacy version had made such an impact.
A great selection of titles guys, and totally agree with Jeremy re. box inserts and game trays - anything that makes setting up and breaking down a game quicker is a huge bonus IMHO.
I really really love Underwater cities. Takes a bit to learn but once you understand the icons, the game is so much fun!
Yeah, it would be my #1 except I considered some other variables in sorting my Top 10, like how often I found myself getting games to the table with a wide range of players. That is an important variable for me.
Can you guys do a Top5/10 party games (non-adult) - as I liked learning about Just One and Ganz Schon Clever from this list and think they would be good party games
... and Great lists - video is a nice length for 3 ppl doing top10s (30mins is v watchable and easily digestable) vs say the Dice Towers Top10s which seem to drag on a bit at about an hour each

Awesome choices! I think a lot of mine line up with what you are all saying as well! I would love to know what Gary's would be though as his tend to be quite a bit different than you three. He should post a list in the comments if he has time :)
Gary was going to join us, but his list included Chutes and Ladders. We have to set some standards after all. ;) We love you Gary!
A humble suggestion if I may. Perhaps rather than 3 separate lists, why not do a combined Top 20 list which ranks games based on their total point score. For example. David submits his Top 10 giving each a score out of 10. The others do the same. Then simply compile the list in the order of games with the least to highest point value. Then if a game comes up on each person’s list it is likely to feature towards the top of the combined list. A game that is only suggested by one person will likely feature towards the bottom. It’s still a great game in a genre loved by the individual submitting that game....it’s just not universally loved by the three judges. I know this sounds a bit too complicated but I believe it will give yo a better opportunity of really discussing the games you all like at the one time rather than have three separate mentions as that game comes out in each separate list.
I really expected Jeremy to have Forum Trajanum on his list, the review was also very positive.

I think MvM needs to do a special edition on Brass Birmingham based on the comments. I tend to agree with many of these....arguably game of the year. To say its just a reimplementation of Lancashire would the rule Caverna out from any Top 10 lists because it’s a reimplementation of Agricola. They are both different games.
Fair point, but I think it's also reasonable for us to take the position we took. It's an awesome game, but it's Brass. Not sure I totally agree with the analogy to Caverna->Agricola.

Great lists. Shocked that Captains of the Gulf didn’t even elicit mention. Definitely a highlight this year.
Regarding your comment for the game mechanic in Just One: check out Twinz by Cocktail games (published in 2015). The idea is somewhat similar.
I loved the list, just surprised you all left Architects of the West Kingdom off. It was such a solid game to not mention. Well, to each their own!
Oh, and brass Birmingham. To me one of the best of the year.
I think that one didn't hit our minds as it was mostly a new version of the original game. It is amazing though.

Architects is a great game. I see it popping up on a lot of lists. For us, I think it got compared too much to its predecessor Raiders of the North Sea. We love both, but Raiders (for me) would still be my go-to.
I like it, and it may have appeared on a top 20, I just didn’t personally enjoy it more than the games that were in my top 10

That sort of game isn't squarely in our wheelhouse, and this specifically didn't get to our table. Maybe an oversight, but not sure it would have crept into any of our lists with all the other options.
Great stuff! I'll have to look into Vindication now and also I'm more interested in Betrayal Legacy. Was surprised Crown of Emara didn't make anyones list but at least it got an honorable mention 😁
I've played Vindication again since we recorded this. I'm still enjoying it a lot. It's a euro hid inside a completely different looking game. I dig it!

Curious as to whether you were able to try Yellow & Yangtze from Knizia? Contender for the #1 spot for me.
I have to admit that it didn't get to my table, but I have heard good things form Marty over at Rollling Dice & Taking Names. I'll have to try it sometime soon (if/when I have the chance).
David Waybright I think you both would appreciate the elegance, simplicity, and balance. Even at 2 players. My #2 is Brass Birmingham.
I have played underwater cities 4 times at 2 player and have been successful with several strategies. So far kelp strategy has not been deemed overpowered. Just my observation. Maybe you are better at implementing that strategy.
I think it's possible with more plays, we'll find that the kelp strategy isn't as overpowered as it might seem at first. Time will tell.
Some interesting choices and quite a bit of crossover. Newton is stubbornly on my wishlist. Surprised that Brass: Birmingham is not mentioned. Neither of the two new Felds which both seem pretty nifty. I recently learned Coimbra and agree it's quite a good medium euro. I still think Marco Polo is the bees knees. Huge shoutout to Kashgar finally released in english by Grail Games. Brilliant.
I'm somewhat intrigued about Betrayal Legacy now. I didn't really like normal Betrayal but these guys make the Legacy version a MUST play. Can anyone else vouch for the game?

Great lists guys! This is always going to be the danger of doing a top 10. Someone, somewhere will complain '...but why isn't XYZ game mentioned!?' This is the joys of gaming, everyone is different with different likes and dislikes. If we all liked and disliked the same things, life would get pretty boring.
I don't think anyone is complaining about their lists. Just would like to hear MvM's thoughts about why certain games weren't included!
We're happy to have people ask why game X or Y wasn't on our lists. Honestly, it was just SO HARD to narrow things down this year. We could have probably spent an hour going through honorable mentions, and things like Architects would have certainly come up.

No David, 3 of us played 3 games and we each won 1. We actually played 4 games, but 1 got messed up when somebody gave a bad clue by mistake.
It's a good game, but probably one that will only get 1 session a year.
Why does every reviewer simply glance over Brass Birmingham? Is it to close in similarity to its predecessor to count as a new game in 2018?
I 100% agree.. I have no clue why this isn't hitting the euro game reviewers top 10.. Its in my top 3
A lot of people I know in IRL and on Instagram have it in their Top 3 easily, for some it's a clear number one.
For us, I really think it was because we kind of view it as a new edition of an older game. Our logic may be faulty, but that's the thought that was weighing on our choice.
@@davidwaybright Wow, interesting. It plays very differently though than Lancashire and it feels totally different too. I rated new version of Lancashire as a 5.5/10 whilst Birmingham is a rare 10/10. While sure the background is similar, there are noticeable differences between the two versions.
I liked Brass Birmingham a lot but I’m not sure how often it will fine play in my gaming group.
What does it mean when the game has Legacy added to the title?
It means that the game has aspects that change each time that you play it. This is usually done by adding new cards, or stickers to the board, or the addition of components that change the way the game plays each time you play it. It’s a fun element of discovery that is fairly new to board gaming.

I enjoyed Coimbra this year but will ultimately sell my copy because I feel like Pulsar scratches many of the same itches this game did but I love Pulsar more. Opinions?
I love both, but Pulsar 2849 has only climbed further up on my overall rankings this year with more plays of it. Pulsar would be my choice between the two, but I still have both in my collection.
Pulsar is solidly in my top 10 of all time list so I guess I can’t blame you

We've definitely mentioned it, but just happened to not get it to the table enough to get a review done (not yet anyway). For myself, it's a bit mean for my tastes, but it is a very solid game for sure. I could see it on many people's top 10 lists.
If I was doing a list of Top 10 well designed games, Root would probably be on that list. As well designed as the game is, it’s just not to my personal tastes and of course that reflects in my top 10

Nick Pane Becsuse I don’t like that you can’t just play your own game and win, and that you have to keep punishing the player in the lead. I just kind of want to build my engine and not worry about it.

I like your list! I had to look up PUSH, and I'm intrigued. Seems simple, but potentially a lot of fun.
@@davidwaybright Thanks. Yeah PUSH is a remake of a classic card game with the same name. The way it works is that there's a stack of cards and during your turn you turn over a card and place it in 1 of 3 piles in front of you. The restrictions being no same number or same colour can be in a row. If you don't BUST then you and 2 others get a pile of cards(You get first choice and it goes clockwise unless a special card says otherwise). If a DICE CARD is revealed and put into a pile the people who end up with that/those piles has to roll a dice that has every colour in the game on it including BLACK. Whichever colour comes up all cards that player has in that colour are discarded unless BANKED(Instead of trying to get more cards in 1 turn you can opt to bank a large pile in front of you). At the end of the game players count up the point values on each of their cards(Banked or still in front of them) and the player with the highest score wins.
@@davidwaybright I'm also kind of surprised that Western Legends wasn't on anyone's list here but I guess it's not a game for everyone although everyone I've ever taught it to/played it with have thoroughly enjoyed it(Even as a 2 player).

Space Base ... Looks fun but you can't sleeve it. They need sort out the card sleeve situation before they get my money.
I suppose that's reasonable if you like to sleeve your cards. But the game is so fun, you should get in a try of it somewhere if you can.

Shows how out of touch I am these days. There were only two games on any of those lists that I've ever even heard of and only one that I've ever played.
Think I will check out Rising Sun, looks right up my alley.

I am one of the few who didn't fall in love with Rising Sun. i would sell for cost just to buy another game.

Love Rising Sun! It's my favorite game. 3 and 4 player is good. 5-6 takes too long imo

Try it. I think you'll like it. I'm going to go on the record here and disagree that the kelp strat is too OP. I've heard from a number of people that they've had different experiences. Plus is may depend on what you let your opponents to get away with.

Sounds like the Rising Sun game that appeared a couple times on the lists was a Kickstarter Exclusive version. The retail edition offers far less content and variety, far more so than other KS vs retail CMON games we’ve played such as Blood Rage and Arcadia Quest.
That IS the version we played, but I think the appearance is based mostly on the core mechanics of the game, and what it has to offer. All the extra goodies probably didn't hurt though. ;)

I absolutely love the range of your choices! It's one of the greatest things about gaming for me. I'm always ready for "fun" no matter what form it comes in to the table.
@@davidwaybright Keyforge take me by suprise i didn't expect it will be so good.Rising Sun Eric Lang and area control some kind of I like this kind of things.Detective light in rules but very thinky.
How does Coimbra play with 2 people?
Fast! I have played it about half a dozen times with two and have enjoyed every game. The dummy dice that are placed and special scoring rules for the tracks with two players shows the developers really put in effort to make two players work. And it goes fast, can play two games in an hour.

Really well and back in the box in about an hour. Actually it's the only way I have played it. The most curious thing about it I find though is that it's never "close" but it's always the final round before your sure who's got it so it still feels clutched.
Yep @Craig J nailed it. Those dummy dice really work well without slowing down the game. In some ways they add another layer of strategy because you’ve always gotta take them in to account when placing your dice.

It is the most flat table list of board games i have ever see. in fact i am a bit suprised that i see Rising Sun in there. this is the joy of meeples and tokens companies. There is nowhere the 3D element and we are at 2019 with megafactories in China can build almost anything... and almost all those games are like 1994 game productions.
Really interested in Underwater cities but it's nowhere to be seen online such as coolstuff or miniature market. Is it officially a 2018 release? Nice to see Dice throne S2 up there. It's supper fun. Teotihuacan is awesome and now looking into Coimbra. CURSE YOU!!!!!! lol
Fighterfan69 I don’t think it’s released in the US yet. It was an Essen release I believe.
Rio Grande will be bringing it stateside in early 2019 it appears. Look for it!
My first game of Space Base took a LONG time. I prefer Machi Koro w/ the expansions
Sorry to hear that. If you haven't tried it a second time, do so. You're one of the first people I've heard with a mostly negative experience.
@@davidwaybright I still found the game enjoyable and can understand why ppl like it better than Machi Koro- it has more depth of strategy and is more of a 'gamer's game' in the genre. I don't see my wife getting behind Space Base as easily, though, and my daughter could probably learn Machi Koro in a couple years so it has a place on my shelf. Really enjoyed hearing your guys' top 10's!
I would love to play Betrayal Legacy, I even bought the game, but reality sunk in I won't most likely be able to get 2 other people to commit to a campaign... and that will just frustrate me... So I sold it...
Played 82 games from 2018. Architects, just One, show time, blue lagoon, ticket to ride New York would be my top 5, then Unlock: Tombstone express. Played 507 different games and 1,800+ logged plays

that betrayal legacy though, played the house on the hill a few times and grew tired of it. This might be a good one to revisit.

We did one last year, and we'll likely update that list again after the new year for sure. A number of my Top 10 of all time have probably shifted for sure.

Good stuff guys; now get back to work on those top 100 lists. 😉 Some of my favorites from this year were Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Champions tcg, Barbarians: the Invasion, Crusaders: Thy Will be Done, and Heroes of Land, Air, & Sea.
Jerrod Warr ....yep, good call. In terms of taking a classic game and turning it up to 11 as well as some simply stunning artwork.....worthy of at least a mention
Wow, what a tremendously different list from Man vs. Meeple's Most Anticipated Games of 2018 list from this time last year. I wasn't impressed by this year's crop of games - the stuff I ended up buying this year dates from previous, and only Betrayal Legacy and Cosmic Encounter 42nd Anniversary Edition really impressed me this year. Too much of more of the same is getting released, with only hype and "cult of the new" backing it up.
The more you're in the hobby, the more it might start to feel that way. I've learned to appreciate the subtle differences and "evolutions" in game design. I feel there were a number of games that offered a fresh take on things--particularly in the lighter games that came onto the scene this year.

Well, I chatted with my most trusted gaming buddies across North America and they all agreed 2018 as a whole, was a step backward from the previous 3 years. I'd like to see game reviewers, as a whole, recognize the competitive environment in which games exist and how they compete against existing published games and not just the releases of the current year and the "cult of the new". A lot of us recognize we only have so much time in our lives to play, and that we need to be focusing on the best, period, in how we commit our gaming time. The game review sector needs to get a lot more critical, IMHO.
Marcus Leja this opinion hasn’t aged particularly well. With root, teotihuacan, brass Birmingham, rising sun, architects of the west kingdom, cryptid, everdell, etc., 2018 was a strong year.
2019 has been dramatically weaker
Great video and all that, BUT wow so much crossover! It is almost like the same list. I understand if you all like the same kinds of games, but wow just so much of the same games. Granted they are good, but...
Fair enough. We have similar tastes, and hopefully it just serves to underscore the significance of those games. ;)
If a game is great obviously it will be chosen more then once 🙄
I wasn't very impressed by this year's game releases. Gencon didn't have much and there wasn't a game that really struck me as exciting
You're not alone, but I happen to feel very different. Gaming is good, and 2018 had a lot to offer, for me anyway.
