I absolutely do not compliment my children for being “obedient”, but I do thank them for being kind , understanding, compassionate and listening to others.
It is only natural that kids grow and want to rebel. What parents need to understand is the importance of communication and trust. A child who respects their parents will always want to make them proud. People need to make mistakes, learn and grow and also build their own independence. Being “obedient”, does none of those things. What it does is make adolescents very depressed, never learn to set healthy boundaries and as well as low self esteem, good liars and manipulative.

I was an obedient child once in a heavily catholic home and people say when I was I seemed happier, but the thing is when you’re forced to appear a certain way in front of everyone all the time that typically entails not expressing much emotion. Me not speaking out about the abuse and depression I felt didn’t mean it wasn’t there. I might seem less happy now to people with an outside perspective, but I’m happier now expressing my feelings and being honest with myself rather than locking everything away. I actually have the will to do better and create a future for myself, whereas before I felt like my life was over before it started and I didn’t have any hope at all.

@@uncannedspaghetti one of the things that really aided me on my recovery after an abusive relationship that framed my parents' actions in a new light to me was the jenny holzer "truism" "IF YOU WERE A GOOD CHILD WITH FAIR PARENTS, YOU WOULD FREEZE IN YOUR TRACKS, GO LIMP, AND TAKE A DESERVED BEATING.
A HOLDOVER FROM THIS MIGHT HAVE YOU SUBMIT TO REAL DANGER,
      BELIEVING THAT SOMEONE IS
APPORTIONING JUST PUNISHMENT AND THINKING THEY WILL STOP SHORT OF KILLING YOU."
something about holzer's truism series is that a lot of the phrases have intentionally ambiguous meanings. the idea of "fair parents" & "deserved beating" i think is appropriate to say here bc it's the framing of the pov of the abused child and/or abusive parents & it's directly called into question in the second part of the truism
EDIT: anyway to get back to my point, it helped me reframe my parents' use of corporal punishment as not just inappropriate but damaging to my sense of self long-term and has allowed me to address it more directly

My dad thought my crying was annoying as a child so he hit me so I "had a real reason to cry" and got angrier if I cried loudly. Now as an adult I am extremely conflict avoidant and anti confrontational. If someone raises their voice at me then my eyes get teary by reflex and I flinch at sudden movements. I will never be comfortable around "bear" type men who are too much bigger than me and that includes my dad. I would never trust him with my doubts and feelings ever and I am incapable of speaking once I start crying. I mean that literally. I just physically can't. It's like I become temporarily mute and how long it takes me to be able to speak after depends on how emotional I was. It could take hours. If I try to talk I just wheeze and if it's particularly bad I hyperventilate. If I make crying sounds I instinctively put pressure on my throat or else I'll just panic and potentially spiral.
    Thanks Dad.

I was an obedient kid in a Christian home cause if I showed any emotion or disapproval my parents would threaten to send me away or yell at me. I became a push over to avoid conflict and anytime I tried to push back it would end in a fight no matter how small the situation. I got diagnosed with depression when I was in grade 9 and when I told my parents I was sat on the couch and yelled at for an hour about how ungrateful I was and how I AM happy but I’m just possessed (wish I was joking) so I feel like kids aren’t more obedient it’s just that emotional abuse is now more common than physical abuse. Not saying either is better but they really fuck up a kids life.

I hate how they say to use less words especially when they are talking about rules because as an autistic person, i struggle to understand things unless they are described very clearly.

I loved being called an obedient child, esp growing up in a Christian household. looking back, that was a debilitating fear of conflict that still affects me :/

I live near a very popular beach that's separate from the city but is the same county. The county cops get extra shifts and paid time & a half to voluntarily work on the beach. I've worked a few jobs over the years on the beach and the cops get comfortable with you. They told me they take the gig for the money and because they don't have to do anything. At night they'll hang in their cars and link their laptops and watch movies or porn together. I knew one cop that was cheating on his wife with a coworker of mine, on duty, in his cop car at night. This was in my early 20's and was the beginning of my awakening and disdain for the piggies.

My “obedience” is just me being a really good liar lol. There’s no way people walk out of this kind of conservative upbringing unharmed. They either lie to themselves or their parents, or become disappointments. There is no such thing as a perfect obedient child. It’s only natural to want to take control of your own life and make decisions for yourself. Plus you can still teach children good manners, eating habits, work ethics, etc. with this wonderful thing called open communication.

So if you see cops grouped like that, just hanging out, that means there is no threat. If you do see them spread out that means they either got a call or threats were made. So no toes sucked but they also aren't bullying anyone.

I think that really just reaffirms his point. Cops, generally, are a clean up crew. If bad shit isn't actively going on or if it hasn't already happened, they'll sit around waiting for it rather than actively preventing those bad things from happening.
Obviously this situation was pretty lax so it isn't that big of a deal, but it is indicative of a bigger problem imo

People have actually had blue skin before. The Fugate family of Kentucky used to have blue skin as a result of inbreeding and a blood disorder called methemoglobinemia although I’m pretty sure the last people in the family with blue skin have passed away now.
