    • @marksamuelsoncable
      @marksamuelsoncable 8 лет назад +263

      +ztoxtube What we see here though is mainly a case of Rodman understanding weaknesses in Shaq's game (Rodman obsessively watched tape of other players looking for weaknesses to exploit) and also a case of Rodman being freakishly strong. 100% he knew Shaq's offensive game was predicated on continuously backing his man down until he could get close to the basket to shoot a short hook. Rodman made a concerted effort to keep Shaq away from getting into his relatively small comfort zone near the basket. Rodman was giving total resistance in terms of strength most times O'Neal tried so much as to back him down one step - and he forced Shaq to attempt to back him down further away from the basket than where most other defenders would usually allow O'Neal to start doing his back-down routine.

    Rodman was a real student of the game of basketball. Whoever he defended his whole career be would lean on them, which is totally legal. He boxed guys out ultra effectively and over time would just wear them down and opponents would fatigue and make poor decisions. Since Rodman never focused on offense he was double focused on defense.

With his size, he can run the floor, he had speed, the IQ, the moves, and the power. He was relentless on he offensive end and you had to double team him almost every time he had the ball. I watched this game on tv when it was played. Rodman was kind of a love or hate guy. His antics were often quite frustrating to opponents, so if he wasn't on your team, chances are you didnt like him. But I was a huge Bulls fan. I was skeptical when they got him that his style and lack of scoring was what the bulls needed. But his energy was off the charts, and if there was a 50/50 ball in play, it always seemed like he came up with it. Nobody can deny his heart, legendary hustle, and his swag. Man was absolutely a hall of famer and to be honest, his defense on Shaq and others was some of the best I had seen. Think of how he rattled Kemp, Barkley, Malone, any of the days other stars. That allowed Scottie and Michael to do their stuff and not worry about the mess inside. It was rough down there in the box and I think they needed Dennis to be banging around and getting fouls on the other teams bigs to swing games. He was a complete A$$ but the man had unreal cardio if you ever saw him live the man simply could run anyone in the NBA out of the gym on any given night and I mean anyone!

      Actually, rebounding is all about positioning. Quickness to get to a good position, and an innate talent of knowing where a ball is likely to bounce (given distance and direction of the shot) are more important than pure strength.
      When Shaq simply backed Rodman down, the Bulls doubled. No amount of quickness or positioning can overcome pure strength there.

    A lot of Shaq fans are whining that the Bulls were doubling and tripling Shaq in the 2nd half, so Rodman didn't really shut him down. The only reason the doubles and triples were effective in the first place is because Rodman prevented Shaq from getting deep position and made him take way too long to post up.
    You'll notice on the first 2 plays that Shaq scored on Wennington, Jordan tried doubling on Shaq, but with Wennington on him, Shaq had an easy time getting deep position, backing him down and taking a quick shot before the doubles could do anything. Even with the help defense, it's accurate to say Rodman was the main reason Shaq got shut down because his initial defense was the only reason the doubles and triples had enough time to make Shaq a passer. If it was Wennington guarding him the whole second half, Shaq would have kept backing him down before the double teams could do anything.

      Yes, Lebron has spent most of his career lowering his shoulder and bulling his way forward. And either getting a blocking foul or getting to the side of the defender and using his hip to create room.
      He counts on quick players being afraid to take charges because of how big he is. And big slow players can't cut him off in time.
      But Rodman had the quickness to make life a nightmare for Lebron, and he was fearless enough to take the hits.

      You mean made you interest in watch the NBA in the 80s. The NBA wasn't watch by the world in the 80s, well a small world that is. Only Canada, and part of Western Europe could watch the NBA in the 80s. Other parts of the world can't, maybe because of political reason (China/Soviet/Cuba), poverty (many countries in Southeast Asia/Eastern Europe/South America/Africa) and basketball didn't really catch on (Japan/Korea/Hong Kong) until the 90's where those reasons might free up the interest in watch/play basketball. I came to the U.S in the late 80s and didn't know jack about basketball until I came here, so forget about the NBA. So the 90's open up lots of door to basketball in general and people know more about NBA started in this era. Is it because of MJ? Probably and this walking legend should always be part of the equation. He's that good.

      @@quarantinegragas2017 Rodman is keeping Shaq of the glass, and I can see Kobe having trouble vs. '96 Scottie. Scottie on Portland kept Kobe to 42% from the field in the 2000 Finals as the primary defender, which is great. MJ would have trouble vs. Kobe, but in 2000-2002, Kobe was undisciplined and gambled too much on defense, so he either got a steal and started a one-man fast break or got blown by and left in the dust. Regardless, I would take the 96 or 97 Bulls over the 3-peat Lakers of the 2000s anyday.

    LeBron definitely would NOT have survived in that era of basketball. No amount of crying or refs would help him out.

      90s ball was the most physical. You definitely had to have been strong mentally. I just don't see LeBron being able to have his way against teams like the Bulls and especially not the Bad Boy Detroit Pistons. He's rattled too easily now in today's game and it would be even worse for him the amount of punishment they brought. He would be reduced to an average player at best even with his size. Charles Oakley and LeBron James...yeah that would definitely be interesting lol

      @Tojohiruma 7 лет назад +15

      Charles Williams i think youre vastly underrating him,now just for the record he isnt my favorite player bc i didnt grow up with him but he is one of the very elite group of people that can draw comparison with MJ,now he's still waayyy behind him but imagine one second he didnt lose those finals like MJ he would be on his level,so no he wouldn't be "an average at best" player in the 90's man he'd be a good/great player

    Rodman also kept him off the glass. So anyone stating the double & triple teams are the reason Shaq didn't score, how many offensive boards did he have? Any chances for garbage buckets? Nope.

    The most impressive thing about Rodman is that he covered Jordan or Pippen early in his career as well as Bird and Magic, He focused on his strength and began covering power forwards and centers.

    Rodman played him awesome in small stretches in the 1996 ECF also
    Rodman from 1989-1997 was DOMINANT on defense
    even gave Hakeem a little trouble in 1995 in small patches which at that time was near impossible to guard

      Technically, the character, "Goldust" was born Oct. 22, 1995 at an In Your House PPV vs. Marty Jennetty whever he made his WWF (at the time) debut. Whereas Dennis Rodman was born May 13, 1961. Dustin Reynolds (who plays Goldust) was born April 11, 1969. But either way. Dennis Rodman is older, Therefore was "BEFORE".
