You know, an aluminum block M52 with a Tilton OT-ii clutch would be a nice piece to throw in here. Or, for that matter, a 5.5" Tilton clutch on that LS3, with an ATI harmonic damper and CS130D alternator.
Interesting considering BMW themselves said the S65 was lighter than the S54, you guys proved them wrong.. but im still impressed at how light both V8’s and the V10 are.
I know for the most part that increasing the load profile on an engine greatly reduces life, but I also chuckle a little bit every time I hear it, knowing that I drive my truck with its little 5.3 ls based motor like it’s a NASCAR every single day, and at 196k miles I haven’t had a single issue with the motor or the trans. The internals of that motor haven’t seen the light of day since December of 2001.
Interesting weight differences. I do wonder about the top engine tuning for the 54 vs 65. Yes clearly the N54 has boost potential, and that would up the weight on the 65. But capacity does count.
Great content! However, it would be best to weight all of these engines fully dressed since that is how they operate in the car, and the components and weight are not equal for all engines. The dressed S65 looks like it is missing the AC compressor, so that needs to be accounted for. I'll add 15 lbs for that. This actually amounts to 445 lbs or 202 kgs, just like BMW advertised. Thank you for putting this weigh comparison together!
What an interesting channel guys shame I'm in the uk if I had blown up my n52 125i I would fancy one of those V8 lumps , amazing stuff you are doing keep it up .
I'm just now watching this 2 years later. Really cool episode but you guys weren't remotely accurate in the comparison with the "stripped down" LS3. It had the alternator installed, coils, and plugs. Nobody else has even noticed apparently. The ppl that think the LS3 is heavier than these BMW engines simply lack a basic understanding of engine fundamentals. 1 cam vs 4 cams, 2 valves per cyl vs 4 make a huge difference is cost, weight, and mechanical friction losses. Pushrods and rockers do add back in some weight back on but this is why the LS is unmatched for cost, complexity and power and packaging. Volumetric efficiency of an LS is no joke. All that said I have accumulated 4 S85s since 2018- all with undamaged cranks, blocks, and vanos, but they were cheap and relatively unknown an unloved, before all these YT videos featuring the car and engine were around. In the US, there's no way I could have acquired an LS7 or LS3 powered car for less.

Thanks s lot for the effort lads, great data for my engine weight spreadsheet. ❤

The magnesium n52 would have been interesting to be wieghed

Can't wait engine autopsy 👌
Great vid and look forward to engine autopsy 👌👍
Cool video! I believe the s54b32, s65b40 and s85b50 all won engine of the year for multiple years in a row 😊
Not the s54 it was the s85 s65 2005-2007 the n54b30 won 2007 and the diesel n47d 2008
Interesting weight differences.

Very interesting comparison. Please do a video about the S65 swapped 1M!

Some good info there, look forward to seeing something on the S55 also when you guys get one in.
Can you weigh an N52B30 in same trim, supposedly the lightest production i6 and what people swap out often.
Very interesting guys. Good work.

Great content, look forward to more.
Fantastic content! Keep up the great work.

Thank you these idiots think HP/L is a the ideal measurement
Great video! Very informative
This video is gold. If I wanted to swap an LS3 into my 1M is that possible? Things like engine mounts, trans, ECU, wiring etc would it be crazy work?
i yes this is possible - we have a mount kit for such a swap
Great video! Now I am curious about the weight of a dressed S54...
I guess you could gather up the bolt on parts and weigh them and add those number together with our recordings also.
LS3"B62"
This is what happens when you've been reading BMW engine codes for too long 🤣
Excellent and informative video. How much for a s65 with dct conversion in a e46 m3?
S85 has best sound by far. I’ll eat the 20-30 lbs for that.
S50B32 all day long
You guys need to use a wireless mic system. That hand held thing is no good.
Can you weigh an s62? My favourite of all the s engines.
THX
Placing an ls engine in a bmw is a great way to lower its market value.
40+ customers of ours beg to differ.
@@BrintechCustoms Australia has been to mericanised. The same as them wanting maccas instead of a quality meal.
@@chippyjohn1not really. We have even more customers still having us put BMW engines. There will always be folks that eat Macca's.
Thanks guys. Ls3 have lower weight centre then s65, great sound and better power potential. What do you think about vq37 in 1 series?
VQ sucks, honestly
But how much would they weigh in outer space? 🤔
You should keep a Top Gear-style board with all the KG weights of undressed BMW engines. Would love to see the various KG’s for N52 vs N54 vs N55.
Not going to happen. We do what we want not at your demand and disposal
Bmw shitboxes ..overcomplicated. over engineered. unreliable.. and endless money pits
