  • After completing and vlogging each of the USA's "Big Three" trails (Appalachian Trail 2021, Continental Divide Trail 2022, Pacific Crest Trail 2023), I return to the High Sierra in 2024 for a nice, 300mi+ hike of its high passes, its crystal clear lakes, and its enchanting views. Hiking through these trails last year I encountered the record-shattering snows of 2023, and while I enjoyed that experience in hindsight, I am eager to embark on what I hope might a little less death-defying and a little more accessible beauty. I'll tack about a hundred miles onto the north end of the JMT, as well as good miles into the middle and end of that trail, hence "JMT++." Follow along this exciting return adventure!

Since I can't keep up the the youngers I've learned to take my time at lakes and comfort spots. Life is short and that trail will always be there while I live. I've heard some regret making miles for months only to realize at Canada they didn't stop to 'smell the roses'.

Yes this is a pervasive, insidious, and persistent struggle on long hikes.... I often reflect on the nature of this impulse... Certainly when I start a hike, my objective is to finish, but certainly if my objective were as simple as moving from one place to another, the far faster, cheaper, and simpler option would be to fly / drive / train. So therefore my objective of reaching my destination clearly isn't simply to finish. And so what is the true objective? It seems to me it is an innately unnameable thing... To make good decisions, perhaps would be the closest I could come to naming the true objective. One must neither ignore the proverbial roses, nor gorge upon them and forget to advance.

@@travelinbeat Yeah, being stuck in Sandy Eggo, not a better place could I have chosen, for months, trying to get back on the PCT has provided ample time to reflect on all my decisions since first deciding to 'hike it one day'. When I see the beauty of the JMT, most recently thru ur vlog, I think to self, 'Wouldn't it b better to yo-yo when I get to Canada eh? (I will likely be in that stretch next 'secret season' so everything will be frozen and I'll be unlikely to find anyone to move at my speed and attitude [Take it as it comes.])

I think that bit between Sonora and Tuolumne sees so many fewer folks than it deserves to just because of JMT, Rae Lakes Loop, Yosemite, High Sierra Trail, etc. I love that north bit and the ridge /unnamed pass above Kennedy Canyon is a fantastic encapsulation of the changing geology

Great video, Beat! Brought back memories of my trek in 2019, sunning at Benson Lake. My favorite lake for beauty, however, was Tilden Lake, off the PCT above Wilma. If you ever make it back, check it out! Thanks for the video. Been following you since you went through the Wind River Range, which I also did earlier in 2019.

Benson lake beautiful, but … some say cesspool of the Sierra due to a lot of mule/horse traffic and the natural downhill flow. Nice surprise to meet a familiar face👍. Video will tell … hope see you truck on the couple miles to beautiful Smedburg lake ??

I met Skye late in the day down by heart lake on 8/2. I gave him some of my trail magic of course too. Fun to make that connection. My day was similar to yours on this day when I did it last year. Smart decision as I went to Smedberg. A stunning lake but that was a brutal day! -GoalTech
