Even though it's Zen 2 instead of 3, that's a great machine for $350. Unfortunately it's jumped to $440. When you consider the 5600X alone had an MSRP of $300, getting a full laptop that you can actually game on for $50 more is pretty awesome. The price for this laptop, in Canada, at Walmart, is $599, online only. We are getting screwed here in Canada, when it comes to prices on electronics, along with other things.
I believe our government has us pay higher prices on everything in order to fund all these social programs and government waste. People don’t want to speak the truth these days anymore. They keep our taxes high and we can’t do anything about it.
My laptop has the 5500U in it and i love it. I play Elden Ring on it at night in bed. When plugged in, my particular laptop allows the APU to use 30 watts. Not sure what performance you'd get without that feature. But yes, Elden Ring at 720p low at 30 fps. Honestly doesn't look that bad.
@@thetechrealist honestly I have a 4k TV. I don't notice when I am watching something in 720p. I usually only start to notice when watching something in 480p.
With HP laptops, don't you find you need to remove a lot of garbage software in order to get good performance? Also modify the power management profile?
In future it would be great to take these laptops apart to show how we get at the replaceable parts. Kind of like an iFixit video but from your own perspective. What I would love to do is replace the SSD with a WD 2 TB HDD. It may draw down the battery faster but my data would be safer on that spinning drive.
On this one all you need is a screwdriver to remove the screws in bottom. Some are hiding behind both adhesive strips. After that you just separate the case/screen from the bottom half of keyboard. You can remove and install new Ram using just your fingers and the m.2 nvme ssd is clearly visible as well. It's held in by a single screw.
@@GrabLifeByDaPoosy Not all laptops are as easy to get into. Moving forward if the trend of replacing reliable HDDs with shitty SSDs takes over I'll switch back over to towers.
Actually it's poorly balanced for gaming, a pretty beefy CPU with a fairly weak iGPU. Steam Deck SoC trounces it and it has a worse CPU. Vega is trash compared to RDNA2, better to wait for 6000 series laptops.
@@sovo1212 $339 for a fully usable laptop man. This iGPU used to be very powerful even compared to Xe graphics due to bad drivers, but now we were spoiled by the 6800U's performance. Mind you 6800U will be a top of the line chip only available in much more expensive laptops.
@@one_step_sideways But that only speaks bad about Intel, instead of speaking any good about AMD. AMD chose not to update Vega graphics for years mainly because of the lack of competition. 6800U will be top of the line, but the 6600U will be like a follow up to this 5500U, and will still double its graphics performance, so I'd say it's worth waiting for it, even if you have to pay a little more. Keep also in mind the 339 USD offer is no longer available, now it's 419.
I bought the 14" 5300U version of these HP laptops. Once you debloat the Windows 11 install, it's actually pretty nice. I tossed in a 16GB stick of RAM to get 24GB in total and I really like it. Wish the M.2 drive was bigger, but that's a future upgrade if I feel like it.
I was listening to this in the background and, when you went through your ad, I thought you meant a Windows key-cap and not the activation key at first lol.
Comparing an AMD 5500U to a Celeron? Is that supposed to be a joke? Because these chips are competitors of the Intel Core i5s? Cheap? Have you tried to find a laptop not briefly on sale on walmart that has a 5500U CPU for less than $399? And it was hard to find that at less than $500 just a month or two ago? Wondering what market you're playing in? With all the supply chain madness and INFLATION pricing that is rampant these days? And multiple DELAYS in the newer chips for the next generation laptops, you'd be lucky to score an 8 Gig/AMD R5 5500U for $400!
Hp website has the HP15-ef2000 with same specs as this except it only has 128gb m.2 nvme ssd for $389 right now. I just ordered a custom one that's jet black with 1080p screen, ryzen 5500u, 16gb ram, and 512gb m.2 nvme ssd for $550 before tax.
hey bro nice review, I have the same set up but from acer, great chipset for the money, could you be kind and share with us the live wallpaper at 3:05, loved the retrowave vibes! cheers!
I just bought this laptop just for remote IT work and instantly replaced this poor 8GB ram to the max of 32GB with the cheapest G.Skill 3200mhz Ripjaws. Now it can easily handle a few JetBrains editors opened, many docker containers running, VirtualBox with Windows 10 (8GB ram reserved), and tons of chrome tabs with no performance drops, all running simultaneously on Ubuntu 22.04. So, if you want something for development without spending a lot of money, this laptop will perform very well after this upgrade thanks to the Ryzen 5500u, which is so good. And it still surprises me that you can get it in such a cheap laptop.
I have the lenovo ideapad with the 5500u in it. You have to watch the temps, because if the cpu goes over 85c it turns down the tdp. I solve this problem by running a laptop cooler when I am gaming on it. I can play cyberpunk 2077 720 30fps no problem at all. Really stout performance if you keep the cpu cool.
I don't think TDP is the only problem here. My lenovo ideapad also only goes to 30W but the Ryzen 5500u can get to 4.0GHZ even at just 30W. I am current playing God Of War 3 with RPSC3 it gets around 35 - 50fps
problem with this new cheap laptops is UEFI security features made to keep you locked in windows making dual boot or simply installing linux a PITA, should include basic linux compatibility as part of the review process...
on those laptops it makes huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge 3d performance difference 1 vs 2 (dual) ram stick configuration. whoever buys one of these and plans to do anything else than web browsing - please do favor Yourself and add second identical ram module.
i wont suggest this for anyone who want it for anything but educational purpose, got it for my sister, from local store for ₹45k~$590. though its cheap but it has many cons, even for the price, first of all heating issue, this gets pretty war from below, thermals are a nightmare on this things, i benchmarked it on R23 it got a score of only 5.2k sounds decent when compared to intel equivalent but 5500u gots till 7k in R23(clock does not go beyond 2.7ghz), 2nd is its built quality, its weak and cheap, holding it you will FEEL the body wobbling, its not much you cant see it, but it does not feels sturdy at all, keys are loose, you will feel the cheapness of keyboard on every stroke, and screen is horrible, colors are horrible on this, i tried to correct it, still no gain, The better alternative is Lenovo Idea pad, its thermals are better, built is okayish and display is far better for a little more price. also this does not have backlight lenovo ones have it. unfortunately the store does not allows returns only replacement.
You put to much of the 30W power budged to the Vega graphics when you overclocked it, so the cpu clocks was hit prety hard. Most of the games you showed was cpu botlenecked because of the insuficient power for the CPU. If you let the Vega graphics in stock or undervolted it you gona have a much better performance overall.
Ouch I got this very same laptop around December from HP's website and it was $500, but I got a discount for $480. I did however get 16 GB of RAM with mine so that was a $50 increase. So the price is pretty close to the one you got but yup I got ripped off on the pricing. I still love this laptop and what I'm able to do with it. Glad to see you do a video on this laptop!
Hi I'm also using this laptop half a year now and it work great , I upgraded it to 16gb ddr4 3200mhz and 1tb nvme and I want to get better gaming but I don't know how to increase its performance
I found the HP spec sheet, but it doesn't tell me what the 1. max ram & mhz is (I have some existing SODIMM I'd like to use!) 2. Can I add/replace the boot drive with an NVME SSD ? If anyone could help me with this, I'd really appreciate it. This might be an amazing home lab PC! And of course ETAPRIME THANK YOU for putting this on my radar and for the video! :)
I don't get why there would be a comparison with Intel Celeron, especially since, as stated they are around $200 and this is significantly more expensive for the class that it is in.
This is a pretty good deal compared to my HP Pavilion 15z-eh100 with basically the same specs if you can find it under $450. Mine cost me $480 on sale before tax straight from HP's web store (it's $620 now).
one question, the performance of this laptop in games is very similar to that of the Lenovo ideapad 3 that you brought to the channel, since I see that they have the same specs
Just ordered a Dell with this processor. $479. Mainly for productivity and maybe watch some videos. I do however love to play Rocket League. Will this processor be able to handle this game at 1080P medium to high settings? Thanks!
Was doing a bit of research on it for upgrades and it looks like it comes with a single 8gb stick of ddr4 and a 2nd stick can be added, I wonder if it can run in dual channel and get a performance boost with a cheap identical stick off of eBay? And is there room for only one m.2? Also, found a refurb for $309 but new is pushing $500 at my Walmart. Are our prices for new that different or did you snag the refurb? Thanks in advance. My cousin's kid spiked my laptop like a football and I need a cheap replacement. If I can game on it or steam stream to it it'd be worth it to pick one up and toss in a bit extra ram.
It comes with 2x4gb ram in dual channel. The information out there is extremely conflicting. HP will even tell you it's not "user" upgradeable but almost all the HP 14, 15, and 17 models allow for upgrading the Nvme sad and DDR4 ram.
Hey, man. Been watching your videos for a couple of years now. Here's in April '22, what's my best best bet for a budget pc that can play up to the WiiU? No so much concerned with the PS sides of things, moreso the Nintendo Just a general direction would be appreciated.
Ive been looking to get this laptop for my mom for some time now. She does use photoshop and watches alot of movies and shows. The specs on this looked good to me but i dont know if its good enough for light-medium photoshop usage. Can you tell me if its good or not? And also how bright is the screen?

My laptop has the 5500U in it and i love it. I play Elden Ring on it at night in bed. When plugged in, my particular laptop allows the APU to use 30 watts. Not sure what performance you'd get without that feature. But yes, Elden Ring at 720p low at 30 fps. Honestly doesn't look that bad.
You must have pee and poo in your eyes if 720p doesn't look to bad.
Jk. Just wanted to make you chuckle. I'm a cheeky little flubber.

@@SlowPCGaming1 I'm not very knowledgeable on which components are the best. Why do you not like ssd?

This is looking way better than my current 7 year old Dell laptop.
Luckily I am saving for a desktop.
Just checked local Walmart in Connecticut and it is $420.00! Other places even more! Please buy one where you got yours and send it to me.
$330 for a 5500U laptop is a steal. This APU is a beast.
Got the 12gb ram version for $294.59 on eBay for my aunt, good stuff
I would love to see you test Linux on such laptops, especially a distro like Fedora
just got my hands on the ryzen 7 version today
I love your vids ❤️
Windows 10 Hero Wallpaper, I mean Window Lighting is still my favorite wallpaper over Blue Flower Windows 11
I find it so annoying that laptops are moving away from having ethernet ports.
I get portability and all but it just seems like a MUST in a computer
You can get a USB Ethernet adapter for around $10.
That's a $650 minimum here in the Philippines.
It's why most people just stick to mobile gaming here since smartphones aren't doubled in price.
We got the same problem over here in Algeria the way they tax 30% on teck devices makes it hard to get a decent laptop at a good price
Do you still get dual channel with a different size ram?
According to CPU-Z it is dual channel.
@@murdock94that's cool, now I have more choices on the second hand mkt. Thanks for replying.
I was listening to this in the background and, when you went through your ad, I thought you meant a Windows key-cap and not the activation key at first lol.
Would love to see this Laptop with FSR 2 and FSR 3 in games.
same as mine very friendly and useful laptop.
You must be the favourite customer of Best Buy and Walmart. The sales person their must rejoice when they see you walking in.

Nice video Sir
hey bro nice review, I have the same set up but from acer, great chipset for the money, could you be kind and share with us the live wallpaper at 3:05, loved the retrowave vibes! cheers!
Not bad for what it is Thanks.
I have this exact laptop! Only bothersome thing is the display, which is low quality, but is 1080p which is an up. (Low cost laptops usually are 768p)
How's the build quality
How is 1080p low quality it’s a solid resolution and full HD
@@magicalsurprise1509 the resolution is just fine, just poor viewing angles and colors is what meant by low quality
Can you recommend a 16gb upgrade for this laptop?
How's the build quality
I have the lenovo ideapad with the 5500u in it. You have to watch the temps, because if the cpu goes over 85c it turns down the tdp. I solve this problem by running a laptop cooler when I am gaming on it. I can play cyberpunk 2077 720 30fps no problem at all. Really stout performance if you keep the cpu cool.
Should I buy Lenovo 5500u or the hp 5500u.
@@piyushkadam4296 hp Heat issues? Which dıd you buy

what do you do all those pcs that you bought in your videos? use them? seriously asking
I don't think TDP is the only problem here. My lenovo ideapad also only goes to 30W but the Ryzen 5500u can get to 4.0GHZ even at just 30W. I am current playing God Of War 3 with RPSC3 it gets around 35 - 50fps
I also see other videos with this same apu and 8 gb of ram running the forza game he couldn't get working. Wonder what is the cause of the issues
Have you tried persona 5 on rpcs3? Would love to know if it works

problem with this new cheap laptops is UEFI security features made to keep you locked in windows making dual boot or simply installing linux a PITA, should include basic linux compatibility as part of the review process...
I like my asus q408g which has the 5500u and an mx450 - decent combo for a little better experience than any built in graphics
This for the price is crazy. I'm impressed. It screams school laptop.
on those laptops it makes huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge 3d performance difference 1 vs 2 (dual) ram stick configuration. whoever buys one of these and plans to do anything else than web browsing - please do favor Yourself and add second identical ram module.
In Philippines 3k especially It's really good for studying
i wont suggest this for anyone who want it for anything but educational purpose, got it for my sister, from local store for ₹45k~$590. though its cheap but it has many cons, even for the price, first of all heating issue, this gets pretty war from below, thermals are a nightmare on this things, i benchmarked it on R23 it got a score of only 5.2k sounds decent when compared to intel equivalent but 5500u gots till 7k in R23(clock does not go beyond 2.7ghz), 2nd is its built quality, its weak and cheap, holding it you will FEEL the body wobbling, its not much you cant see it, but it does not feels sturdy at all, keys are loose, you will feel the cheapness of keyboard on every stroke, and screen is horrible, colors are horrible on this, i tried to correct it, still no gain, The better alternative is Lenovo Idea pad, its thermals are better, built is okayish and display is far better for a little more price. also this does not have backlight lenovo ones have it. unfortunately the store does not allows returns only replacement.
Yeah my Lucienne runs best stock after a restart. I have only tried the settings listed here for my HP 17
Just got this for $99 at my walmart :)
How much did the overclock impact the temperatures and battery life of the laptop?
The max ram is 32gb but I’m uncertain on the max MHz is probably 3600mhz or 4200mhz base off other similar hp laptops .
Love hearin you say pp in ppsspp, very funny. Hilarious actually.
Yh but our laptop comes with backlighting a slightly more color accurate display and fingerprint with a metal deck and screen cover

one question, the performance of this laptop in games is very similar to that of the Lenovo ideapad 3 that you brought to the channel, since I see that they have the same specs
Just ordered a Dell with this processor. $479. Mainly for productivity and maybe watch some videos. I do however love to play Rocket League. Will this processor be able to handle this game at 1080P medium to high settings? Thanks!
man the price difference is insane, here in Europe for around 350€ we can buy a dual core laptop with 4GB ram, which is not even close to this
True
I got this exact laptop on black Friday for 400 euros in Germany. Usually it went around 450-500.
I was wondering how you're able to get your igpu running at 2000mhz while testing games since the max clock for it is only 1800mhz
