- Kenya is building Konza Technopolis, a $14.5 billion dollar smart city that Kenya’s hopes will become the Silicon Valley of Africa. Konza Technopolis will lie 60 kilometers southeast of Nairobi, covering 20.2 square kilometers and eventually hosting 185,000 people. It will host a world class postgraduate university and will have a green, pedestrian focused city layout. Konza Technopolis is under construction and its first phase is planned to be completed by 2022.

Africa is an amazing continent. And Kenya is one country that sticks in mind of becoming a superpower of Africa. Kenya has so much potential and their technology sector is booming. I feel like Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Egypt, Morocco, Ethiopia, and The Seychelles will be the leading countries to make Africa a superb continent for business, tech, tourism, etc.

props to Kenyan for looking to the future and keeping East africa on developed
I wish much success for this enterprise and to Kenya!
These videos are really uplifting and inspirational. I hope this city is a success and they can replicate this across Africa, this way Africans will have opportunity in Africa and be able to stay in Africa, and some of the Africans that have relocated to the West can move back.
Agreed , Africans can move back and work our fellow brothers
Africa needs those kinds of initiatives urgently, to become independent from the 'West' and China ASAP. Hope everything goes well :)
We can't do that for now . no tech industry in africa so smart cities must have china and the west as major players
I highly doubt the city will remain desolate...as of now we Kenyans seek to have focus shift from the chaotic Nairobi to something more peaceful with a mix of greenery and walkable neighborhoods that is less polluted. I believe it would be taken positively 🇰🇪
GOOD LUCK FROM THE PHILIPPINES!

The great thing about periphery and semi periphery countries is that they still dare to dream big. That really is something that the richer countries don't do anymore

Although I'm not in Kenya or Africa I hope this project gets finished soon
This is wonderful. The only thing I would add is that besides tech/silicon valley - type industry, Kenya should consider becoming the medical hub as well. Producing a percentage of the world's medical necessities is a good investment. You cannot go wrong in that industry. Whether producing medical equipment, medicine or medical tourism. I wish only the best things for Kenya. They are headed in a positive direction.

Especially of projects like this, where previously poorer regions of the world take on ambitious infrastructure projects, that lead to higher demand for educated people.
I really hope that this will succeed. A great scenario, since Kenya is an agricultural nation, would be that some of the tech companies that move in, are dedicated to agricultural R&D, and that this tech will spread to the rest of the region.
Best of luck!! From India.

Would you consider doing a progress report on existing smart cities? How many of them end up being a good return on investment vs giant boondoggles? Are there any important factors that contribute to their success or failure? I've heard about *so* *many* of these over year years, but get the impression that most fail to get out of the "making promises" phase and into the "delivering promises" one.

Man, after living for 11 years in Kenya, I'm pretty sure that it's going to be far from happening
11 years is not a long time, and it's already happening
Be patient..11 years is way shorter for a country that's just 58 Years old...our president said today that we can't be developed by a period of 5 years..The most developed countries in the world took centuries to be where they are..we are actually way moving fast..we are still amending our Constitution and hopefully see to it that these things will be real...
@@terriegeorgez1380 The only things so far that I can praise Kenya would be its mobile network and its love for football.
I don't like how archaic some of its supposed areas of tech is. Uhuru promised a lot of things that he delivered on a miniscule scale, or delivered poorly where it put more harm in the economy than its worth.
The fact that its been in an economic trough for half of the time I've been there shows the effects of its poor state of government and its standards.
Most developed countries didn't take "centuries" to get where they are right now. The UAE and Qatar propelled themselves to their current state half the time that Kenya had thought itself to implement a more proper road system. On top of that, Kenya had a push up start in that it started off acquiring modern technology in its independence and an established road network. Most developed countries didn't have such a luxury like Kenya
@@tandemcharge5114 Yes,I understand all these and by the way am not supporting the government for its poor governance or any other unimplemented promises...But one thing that many don't understand is that Africa is full of diversity and many ethnic communities..the only thing ailing us is the way to accommodate all and bring them into one basket and work as one..You and I know that your country (sijui kwenu ni wapi)or other countries don't have many ethnic communities and so they can cowork well without problems...We are hoping that we shall get through this and develop our country...About those Arab countries, they are lucky that they are a homogeny speaking one language and therefore making a great team...Same as those non african countries..
@@terriegeorgez1380 Somalia is a homogeneous country with the Same language, Arabs are rich because of oil😎
I hope that the city will have affordable and good quality housing for non-tech and other low wage workers. This is a big issue in Silicon Valley and other US cities and is one of the causes of homelessness.

I Live in the west, and I have to say. People exagerate to much what media says. Speccially considering the fact that I have never seen Kenya in media (they don't care about Kenya, the same way Kenya's media doesnt care about Portugal)
Also yes, most african nations don't have much hope. And thats commun knowledge. So, what media says isn't necessarelly wrong. But its exagerating saying that europeans and americans think Africans are primitivo and have no techonology
