  • NOTE: Some things that a lot of people consider major are not discussed much in this first video (power nodes, sound design, upgrade mechanics, etc.) because they will be brought up in the two videos following this one. I'd rather avoid redundancy.
    Part One of this series focuses mainly on the first Dead Space, released in 2008.
    I have a Twitter and I've started using it a lot more, by the way! You can find it here: / cee_marshall

    I think this is your densest, best produced video yet-- by a solid margin. It's a fantastic structural breakdown of the game, and I feel like you've developed your critical voice a lot more than in previous videos-- more of your personality comes through in the writing. I also really enjoyed the slickness of the video production-- very lively, quite distinctive. I literally just finished this game and your analysis was super grounded. I'm also glad on a selfish level that we have different areas of interest in the game.
    Long story short: awesome video.

      KrazyK785 I would rather comments on this video talked about how Marshall nailed the mechanical charisma of the game. The detail he goes into is great, and I think he relays the complexity of it in a pleasantly straightforward way.

    Hey. So someone posted this video on the subreddit VideoGameAnalysis about a month ago. I commented on it but I thought it'd be good to post it here too:
    Outstanding video. I was hesitant to watch because I haven't played the game--its sat unplayed on my Steam account for years now--but I'm glad I did.
    Good voice. Clear thoughts. Surprisingly concise for a video that's half an hour. I'd have to play the game to properly comment on the points made but I could follow them well and they seemed balanced.
    I appreciate that this was neither a stuffy, "scholarly" review nor riddled with attempts to be funny. Some gaming channels try way too hard to be one of these extremes and fail. Hard. I also approve that there were no sections with the camera pointed at reviewer's face. I don't know why so many people are insistent on having a physical presence in their videos when they're discussing a topic that would benefit far more from examples. Analyzing a game is not the same as a blog.
    This guy looks to be new--his first video was six months ago. This also looks to be his most ambitious video to date since it's far longer than the rest on the channel. Hopefully he'll find this subreddit and be encouraged. I'm looking forward to more, and I have a new archive to raid.

    Absolutely excited to see the future episodes of this analysis. I've never had an easy time with Horror. I'm just kind of a panzy at heart. But Dead Space, mainly Dead Space 2 was what really got me into Horror. DS2 is easily my favorite game of that year, easily my favorite horror game. And it's no surprise that Event Horizon became my favorite horror movie.
    I still don't have an easy time with horror games. But I respect and colossal amount of design and cool idea that went into Dead Space.
    I know you're focusing on the games, but take some time to watch the short films Dead Space Aftermath and Dead Space Downfall.

      Ularg Okay! It's a pretty amazing, filmworthy, universe they've created. That's one of the big reasons I chose not to speak about it. I've already gone so far down the rabbit hole this project would be far too long if I broke apart the narrative as well.
      Have you read any of the comics? They look pretty impressive also.

    Never understood why people thought back tracking was such a problem, this also goes for the navigational aid given to the player; you're not stumbling a round in unknown environment, it's where you work, you are a Engineer who repairs Space-ships, not only that when there are none standard location to find other friendly N.P.C up load mission details to your suit.

    • @SM-nz9ff
      @SM-nz9ff 6 лет назад +1

      The backtracking is fine and works well in this game and any game that does it right. It shows progress or regress of the environment and is also in this game a parallel to his mind devolving along with the ship. People just can't review things and actually relate it to what they are reviewing. Just "backtracking bad" and that's it.
      Well no, it's not bad and it makes sense you'd need to revisit some key areas in a fuckin space ship. Even though it's big there are only so many sectors and key points you would want to/need to visit.
      Also like you said...it's fuckin flat out brilliant that the suit has all of that technology. No shit you know where to go as the god damn schematic of the ship is literally in your damn suit. If anything, more games set in the future should have common sense stuff like this and ya know...actually have futuristic capabilities for the player.

    • @SM-nz9ff
      @SM-nz9ff 6 лет назад

      If you don't know where you're going in a game that has a ship schematic downloaded to your suit that's a you problem.
      Backtracking was done perfectly in DS and as a software engineer(game development career path) myself this is actually shown in school as an example.
      Different parts of the ship break when at different times for reasons clearly shown in the game. You need to access the same area for different reasons which is perfect. New areas just to have new areas doesn't make a game and in most art you have same locations all the time such as the Alien movie this is derived from. They are on that ship in Alien the whole time and everything is samey. No problem at all.
      People who create classics like DS and Alien don't take "cardinal sin" lessons from YT channels.

    this game is one of the greats. Dead Space 2 also great.
    one point, Cee, you mentioned not liking the aiming when the camera was fixed by the game (when you're being dragged by the tentacle, etc.) , I always liked that choice because I figured it was meant to give the player the sense of disorientation that Isaac would have felt in that situation. The 'hanging upside down tangled up in wires after the subway crash' in DS2 is another good example

  • @TurtleFul
    @TurtleFul 9 лет назад +1

    Yes! One of the first PC games i played as a kid and the game that got me into the limited but wonderful world of Horror games. I felt that Dead Space ( especially the second game) was a perfect mix of action and helpless horror. Although since then I have learned to like games like Amnesia the Dark Descent more (My favorite game of all time). The more atmospheric type of horror.
    However I really do appreciate the detail they put into the deadspace games. I really enjoy the story, more in a world sense though rather than the story revolving around Isaac finding (or not finding) his girlfriend. The story about the markers and their origin.
    There is an animated movie that revolves around what happened on the Ishimura when the outbreak started that recommend to anyone that is interested.
    The corruption that follows the outbreak and discovery of the markers effect is really interesting and more of an incentive to play the game than any love interest could ever be.
    Great breakdown of the first game. GJ GG WP. Looking forward to Cee (hehhe) your opinion on the second and the third game!

    Whenever I play this game, I always use the plasma cutter. Wasn't until DS 2 and especially DS 3 where I use different weapons. I was addicted to the "create a weapon" part of DS 3; always wanting to experiment with every single bit of part I find to see if it'll be better than the combination I had at the time. Keeping my fingers crossed that Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3 can be downloaded from Xbox Live. Don't want to purchase a 360 just for two games

      Why would I want to get those games (halo games, Res 4, Dark Souls 1-...4? Is there 4 games now? I dunno, never got into Dark Souls) when I already own them on xbox one? There's probably other games worth mentioning that was released on the 360, but I'm really content with only having xbox one for now. In the near future, I'll be picking up a 3ds xl and sometime in the future I'll also pickup a Wii U, but right now, I'm satisfied with xbox one

    • @alexbiersner3350
      @alexbiersner3350 7 лет назад

      Res 4 is my all time favorite game. When the digital copy finally came available for one, I immediately bought it on the spot. A few weeks later, the hard copy was made available in the stores, even though I already owned the digital copy, I immediately purchased the hard copy of Res 4 lol. I'm crazy for buying the game time and time again, hell, I played the game on every console....besides PC and ps4 of course. The main reason I bought a xbox one was for the Master Chief collection. Halo 5 wasn't very impressive; crossing my fingers that Halo 6 is the best game in the franchise. Not for sure if they're going to finish the story of Master Chief for good, but if they are, then it has to blow the roof off of everything we know a Halo game can do.
      I never played Silent Hill, but Condemned blew me away. I was generally scared from time to time while playing that. I do own a ps2 and have a lot of games for that. Max Payne 1 & 2, GTA Vice City, Medal of Honor: Front Line, Rising Sun, European Assault, Bully, Ultimate Spiderman, Tony Hawk's Underground, Hulk Ultimate Destruction, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Smackdown vs Raw '10, Mortal Kombat Deception and The Thing.

    I find the flamethrower the most fun weapon and the most useful against lurkers, I hate those things and just seeing them disappear behind a blue flame and come out baked is very satisfying and seems the most useful in a real sense as it would prevent the reuse of the corpses for future use

    In regards to the shooting range minigame and reward mechanics you brought up, I think Left 4 Dead 2 has a really interesting one. If you get the high score, you're rewarded with a gnome that you need to carry all the way to the end of the campaign for an achievement. It's a silly side-quest that adds replayability and drives home the teamwork aspect, since you're basically down a gun for the rest of the campaign, outside of camping areas.

    One thing I don't agree with is the argument about motivation. Issac has to fix all the things in the sip because it's the only way to survive, and he is always in the best situation to do what has to be done, and is the best equipped to survive it. Also, he's not the only one doing things; other characters will often hack doors or take care of other objectives while isaac is doing his thing. All in all, Isaac's main motivation is simply to survive, everything else is basically a secondary motivation.

    Terrible PC Port? That was by far the best version! The mouse controls allowed for precision movement and aiming on level which game controllers cannot achieve. This is critical in game like this where precision shooting is required for dismemberment. I never had any problems with the controls in this game.
    (I'm aware there are games that are better played with a controller. This is not one of them.)

    • @Daigon95
      @Daigon95 7 лет назад

      only time precision was really an issue to use with a controller was during those Ship cannon sections and moments where ur grabbed by those long arms (and the final boss). imo

    • @XxTaiMTxX
      @XxTaiMTxX 7 лет назад

      As someone who tackled the franchise first on console and only recently picked it up on PC... I gotta say the aiming and movement are more fluid and precise on the console versions. Dead Space 1... only problem I ever had with precision was during the "shoot the asteroids" section. Any other section of the game? Cakewalk with easy and fluid controls. Dead Space 2? Zero problem with precision or controls with my joystick. Dead Space 3? No problems there either.
      Hopping into Dead Space 1 again on PC... Oh, my, God. How the hell does anyone accomplish anything with a mouse in this game? Movement is jerky, it's difficult to line up shots, even more tricky to swap modes on the fly, or do two or three different things at a time with the keyboard...
      As for the other two games? Not there yet. Gotta beat the first one again, first.
      Mouse and keyboard controls really fuck the experience in Dead Space 1. BADLY. The only controls on PC I've ever had that were worse were... well... Pick an MMO. Or, pick The Witcher 1 and 2. Or maybe pick Dark Souls 1.
      It's a sad experience when I prefer a joystick or a controller to your "mouse aiming" in a game. Even worse when I tend to prefer it for most PC games, because mouse controls are just... well... fucking garbage. Well... unless we're talking about Battlefield mouse controls. Those controls have ALWAYS been tight. Pick a battlefield game, it plays better with a mouse aiming device. Moves like ass without a joystick and using a keyboard... But the aiming is great. One of the few PC games where I prefer mouse aiming, because it is just SO. DAMN. TIGHT.
      Most other games though? Yeah, put the mouse in the box, I'll be plugging in my controller for better aiming.

    My best game of all time.

  • @OrilliousTyr
    @OrilliousTyr 5 лет назад

    Not everyone seems to experience the issue, but the PC port is well documented as having serious problems with mouse aiming. Something to do with how it lines up with the framerate and whether or not you have Vsync on. The in-game vsync will cap the game at 30fps, so you've gotta force it externally with a graphic driver console.
    As for the mouse aiming, there is a fix out there made by a fan that will make aiming feel much better in the majority of the game. It's pretty easy to find, and I think Mandaloregaming also has a link to it in his video's description.

    The strange thing I find about horror in gaming is how much like the theme of "survival", it bleeds into so many other genres of games, yet a "pure" horror game is rarely successful. Vaults 11 and 22 in Fallout New Vegas, The Painted World of Ariamis in Dark Souls, the Nightmare area of Metroid fusion, horror is so widely found in many popular "classic" games, yet those never truly identify as "horror" games themselves. Its strange, when a game specifically tries to be horror it either tries a series of gimmicks to cause discomfort, or more unfortunately forces shocks and action sequences to attract attention (a big example being Evil Within) Somehow horror blends into so many games, and perhaps because its one of our most powerful and common emotions, it has this strange reach into all forms of storytelling in my opinion. Its shaped gaming experiences like DOOM, its a major contributor to the sci fi genre..
    Sorry for the ramble, going through this brought out these kinds of thoughts. It would be great to see you do more of these kinds of game/franchise/genre dissections, its really interesting

    Nice Vid! I remember this Game really grabbing me when it first came out, and the sound design was absoloutely peerless! Just Wow!! can't think of anything that's memorably come close, even now.
    ...Do the "Necromorphs" want to 'End your Life' ? I dunno - I'll have to play this again; it's been _Years!_
    I kinda always felt while playing that, in some way, its/their "Desire" was to somehow _'Become you'_ (perhaps at a basic, atomic/molecular level? ) but ultimately only end up totally corrupting the thing it/they desire to become.
    (Which is often the way with Desire).
    Yeah, like "The Thing" - A horrific hungering Formlessness, blindly, implacably seeking form to inhabit, (or delimited evoloutional mutations; happening in seconds rather than hundreds of millenia)

    It's actually unlikely hardcopy reference books will ever be completely out of use. Technology, even when working correctly, requires power, while a book does not (outside out need for light to see).

    The best weapon in the game is the ripper, is the best of the best trigger 1 cut's everything from close range and on trigger 2 is like a far distant weapon is the best. Then is plasma cuter, line gun, plus rifle etc the last is the flamethrower...

    Am I the only one that loves all three games? I understand people's issues with DS3 but to go large scale it was going be more like an adventure game, by this point in the story Issac is less terrified and more of a necromorph professional so he would be and I really enjoyed the crafting once I got the hang of it.

    • @SM-nz9ff
      @SM-nz9ff 6 лет назад

      Not only that but if you know you are going to be fighting Necromorphs you prepare accordingly and go in with real weapons, not just refurbished tools. So there should be 0 problems in that regard for anyone with 2 brain cells. Universal Ammo though...that's unforgivable.
      Plus like you said, he's good at it by now anyway and so would the actual fucking military.

    It's been a while since I played DS, but I feel like you overlooked the Disc Ripper. Once I had a few upgrades in that I was able to use the alt fire to shred multiple enemies per single disc and literally never even came close to running out of ammo. Maybe I didn't give the Pulse Rifle enough of a chance (because I honestly found it boring compared to the more unique weapons), but I can't imagine it being more ammo efficient than the Disc Ripper given how much carnage a single shot can cause.
    Anyway, nice video, now I'ma watch the next one :)

    • @SM-nz9ff
      @SM-nz9ff 6 лет назад

      His comments on the Ripper almost invalidate everything else he says entirely. Other than being about as incorrect as you could be on that he actually just sucks really bad at the game.

    The major issue I have when anyone talks about Dead Space, is that they always focus on the gameplay elements. In particular when discussing Dead Space 3, the gameplay elements that changed from the previous 2 and thus "ruined" the franchise.
    I suppose I'm in the minority here, but to me, the story that was being told, was far more terrifying than the jump scares and all around constant suspense gameplay design. For example, Dead Space 3, while perhaps a bit easier due to the crafting system being introduced, was by far the most terrifying because when you pay attention to the story, and you don't dismiss things like audio and text logs as "boring game flavor...." it's quite the terrifying concept.
    To me, that's what makes Dead Space as a series stand out, and why I'd be in favor of the games being turned into movies and then the universe expanded on in the theater. The story is unreal and terrifying to those who sit and actually ponder its depths.
    As I said, I realize I'm in the minority, so flame away.

    Solidly produced video, although I don't agree I think it's a fair and sound analysis of Dead Space. I recently replayed and finished DS1 this past Friday and spend the remainder of the weekend playing through Dead Space 2. Can't wait to see the next video.

    Great video man, enjoyed it a lot. I'm a big fan of Dead Space so I'm looking forward to the next two videos =]
    I got a question though if you don't mind. What are your render settings? Your videos are absolutely gorgeous to look at. Can hardly tell youtube has been messing with it!

    • @CeeMarshall
      @CeeMarshall  9 лет назад

      ***** I record everything as source-matched AVI files, because I'm a dingus. The Dead Space footage here is only AVI, never compressed to MP4 beforehand. So that helped. Even though that won't be the case for the next two videos because my hard-drive has become fat and slovenly.
      When it comes to editing and eventual rendering; I use Premiere Pro CC. Exporting format is H.264. Present is custom (Matched-source basic settings, Maximum Depth, 2 VBR Passes, 10 mbps Bitrate).
      It generally comes out really well... but rendering time can be outrageous. This video took a little over 3 hours.

    Rick and Morty aired in 2013....Dead Space came out in 2008.....so your comment that the show ruined a bit of the game is YOUR fault and entirely invalid in a entire review of the game. That is something you would use against Rick and Morty.

    about the line destination guide, what if halfway through the game, a necromorph cuts off Isaac's hand, so he loses the ability to use it, thus making the game even scarier as you lose your greatest trump card.

    I disagree that the map is the issue. I would say that developers are just unwilling to let a player get lost, this is the issue. Getting lost and finding your way wasn't fun in old games, but OOT was one of my favorite games and this happened around 8-10 times when I was a kid and I didn't even beat that game till 5 years ago anyway.
