You are right on! Unfortunately, electronic devices that are available now make it much easier for a youngster to barely pass as a vocalist, and then with a great jingle, he/she becomes the newest sensation. They don't have to practice grueling vocal exercises to keep their voices fit, but they do have to practice dance moves which distracts the viewer from realizing the person performing has a pity poor voice. It's too bad, but entertainers like Dame Shirley are a lost art.
I met Shirley 50 years ago (she sang this is my life and others) and have loved her ever since.

I have been a fan since the 1970s and am always mesmorised by every performance. I mean, just observe here. The sheer beauty in and out of this legend, the interpretation, the control, the power, how she draws you in. The sparkle in her eye. The technique. I am also a fan of opera singers too - massively. And when i rarely go to any soprano in concert, it is a very very special moment. If anyone makes a noise when i am concentrating on the singer - because we are being offered small doses of concentrated exquisiteness - woe betide anyone who coughs or rustles a sweet/candy wrapper! And it is the same with DSB. I am spellbound here. It's truly truly incredible. Watch her mouth/jaw/tongue position at the end of the first song. Always blown away.

Shirley Bassey is truly great Lenny, I agree -- but the late Timi Yuro's contralto range has often been compared to Shirley's timbre & power -- accurately so.
Yuro was always incredible. Timi opened for Frank Sinatra many times & Elvis Presley often attended her Vegas concerts.
She was famous for the hit "Hurt," but she was most impressive during a 1980s Dutch TV show. A stunning performance of "You'll Never Walk Alone." (on RUclips).
She was often compared with affection to Shirley Bassey and by Bassey fans themselves. Some even mentioned a possible duet. But that's too late now.
She sang & recorded duets with Willie Nelson (who also produced her) & Johnny Ray. If you like Shirley -- and I do -- you could appreciate Timi Yuro. They were both about the same age, both were compelling & had power. Timi passed away in 2004.

I was lucky enough to be there when she opened the Marquis theater in Manhattan and what a night it was. What a powerhouse, what a voice, what a presence. The tiger bay tigress, what can you say about this lady, she is just sensational, the most recognisable and powerful voice .I grew up listening to legends like shirley, elvis, Tom Jones, engelbert sinatra Davis jnr and the wonderful dean Martin among so many others,it was a golden era when an artiste sang passionately to their audience, I was captivated.

I can NEVER get enough of DSB. The first concert I attended was at the Kelvin Hall Arena, Glasgow, circa 1976. I have followed her ever since. In this Pandemic, I have found myself getting pissed more regularly than normal and turning to Shirley for emotional release. The tears have flowed. Sadly we shall never see her live on stage again (in a concert scenario) as her aging dictates that it is not possible, or indeed welcome by herself. Suffice to say, Thank you Shirley. My life would have been worse without you!
