Whether or not you find the Choreography to be too fast paced or poorly EDITED is a different thing all together. Slow the footage down and watch it. Lancer's movements are fluid, powerful, dynamic and aggressive. The animation IMO is excellent. In any case, I wrote my orginal comment THREE YEARS AGO, in the interim there have been better sequences in various anime, but at the time, this was the Apex of what was being produced.

Rho Aias has enough power protect a castle. But that wasn't Ajax's main goal. Ajax mainly carried the shield to protect his half-brother, Teucer: a archer that fought with a spear. Though the shield was lost upon Ajax's death, its lives on as a Conceptual Weapon in a Archer with swords... that's fitting.
My understanding was that EMIYA saw Rho Aias at some point in life (which is how he can project it at all), and what we see is just what Rho Aias looks like when deployed.

And shirous can only fight back a non serious GoB ; even shirou , in the VN , admitted that he would be instakilled if gilgamesh regained his composure 😉 Not even touch the likes of EA.

They also use similar moves in both fights. Like the one where transitions from a roll to pushing himself into the air. Except in the church fight he projects his bow and fires while airborne. Kinda shows how they held back.
Take a like for that transition between 0:54-0:55, if someone didn't watch the series he would have never noticed this was actually two fights, that was so clean.
If I remember correctly, the reason Lancer didn’t kill Archer is because the “always strikes the heart” ability only applies when he thrusts, not when he throws.
I think in Archer vs Lancer round 2, he says it was because Kotomine used a command seal to make him scout the other servants, not kill them. Which means the mad lad went around picking fights and living to tell the tale several times despite his luck *and* a handicap.
It also applies when thrown but in a different way. It can't be stopped and will keep aiming for the heart but won't rewrite causality when it fails. Archer survived by using a conceptual shield that acts as the ultimate defense against thrown spears iirc

Lancer’s ability to rewrite causality apparently has short range, so it’s not technically that it can’t do so when thrown, but that the range is too short to bother throwing it. Also, yes, the reason it was a draw is because it was the classic “unstoppable force meets immovable object” paradox.

This is my favorite fight in the whole franchise and it’s not even particularly great but what I like about it is how fast it is because at first glance it seems just flashy but if you slow it down or rewatch it you can see it’s a well choreographed fight
when there is a spear in the fight you know its gonna be epic , tons of stories with just swords and magic , where only few gives true value of spear arts ( the king of all weapons)

This was the 1st Fate series I watched and the only so far and I really didn't appreciate how good the story and animation is I'm thinking I need to dive back into Fate Lancer was always so cool

This animation was so far ahead of its time. It’s my unpopular opinion that this level of fight choreography has never been surpassed, even by ufotable themselves. Demon Slayer is gorgeous and flashy, but the fight choreography in UBW and Zero is just on another level. I’m not convinced anything will ever surpass it.

I was very new to anime when I first watched this series, and I didn't realize what kind of anime Fate was, so my jaw dropped when Archer disappeared and then the fight began. Was not ready for how epic the fight scenes of this show would be

@@JankyDice96 No. I was talking about the spear and the shield. None of them won. The shield shattered but it completely stopped Gae Bolg. Archer was injured because that's just how the shield works. For each layer that shatters, the user suffers some damage and since all 7 layers broke, Archer suffered a good amount of damage but the whole spear vs shield thing was a draw. And Archer healed his wounds just fine shortly after. In the end, they both used majority of their magical energy like you yourself said.

These series fuckin rule man. The presentation has me draining BUCKETS of snacks just enjoying the fuck out of them. Is the story high art? No. Are the characters super complex all the time? No. It is what it needs to be, and the themes are well written and the pacing is great. The fights are IMMACULATE too.
They both have E rank luck. This isn't the causality reversal attack. If it was, Emiya would be dead. Cu just chose not to use it. It would be easy, but he wanted to force Archer to beg for forgiveness from Rin first.

That super powerful arrow that Archer used against Berserker and Caster is a modified version of Caladbolg, which is the sword that killed Cu Chulainn (Lancer) during his life. In other words, it's Lancer's natural weakness, and Archer has unlimited access to it. He could have used it against Lancer and easily won, but instead he chose to engage him in melee combat, both to piss off Lancer and to prove a point to Tohsaka (since she was complaining about failing to summon a Saber). Archer has access to all kinds of weapons, but intentionally chooses to use Kanshou and Bakuya which are only class C noble phantasms, so it can be said that he's almost never trying his hardest throughout this whole series. Not to mention, he also had Unlimited Bladeworks at his disposal, and didn't use it.
Holy budget! Is Ufotable secretly being given money by the entire world to make their animations? They were already mindblowing back then and they are still kicking hard.

This was the 1st Fate series I watched and the only so far and I really didn't appreciate how good the story and animation is I'm thinking I need to dive back into Fate Lancer was always so cool

honestly i usually avoid animes that have bad animation. so i didnt watch fate at first but yea after i watched fate stay night i got hooked like a fish
well yeah if youre accustomed to 2019 or 2020 anime. Honestly its just ridiculous that like, 80% of every 2018-2020 shounen anime have such atrocious animations

I could watch these fights for a very long time
This animation was so far ahead of its time. It’s my unpopular opinion that this level of fight choreography has never been surpassed, even by ufotable themselves. Demon Slayer is gorgeous and flashy, but the fight choreography in UBW and Zero is just on another level. I’m not convinced anything will ever surpass it.
I think the second season of jujutsu kaisen might just be the first to do so. The first two episodes looked stunning.

@@INTJ791 Heaven’s Feel has bigger and flashier animation for sure, but the fight choreography I don’t think so. It’s mostly fuckhuge DBZ energy attacks rather than actual swordplay like this.

I was very new to anime when I first watched this series, and I didn't realize what kind of anime Fate was, so my jaw dropped when Archer disappeared and then the fight began. Was not ready for how epic the fight scenes of this show would be

@@JankyDice96 No. I was talking about the spear and the shield. None of them won. The shield shattered but it completely stopped Gae Bolg. Archer was injured because that's just how the shield works. For each layer that shatters, the user suffers some damage and since all 7 layers broke, Archer suffered a good amount of damage but the whole spear vs shield thing was a draw. And Archer healed his wounds just fine shortly after. In the end, they both used majority of their magical energy like you yourself said.
Actually Lancer was in full form and he could kill Archer After that but he understand Archer isn't really work for medea and his honor prevent him for killing Emiya After he drop the fight

This is how animation suppose to be. This is some movie quality animation in a series.
These series fuckin rule man. The presentation has me draining BUCKETS of snacks just enjoying the fuck out of them. Is the story high art? No. Are the characters super complex all the time? No. It is what it needs to be, and the themes are well written and the pacing is great. The fights are IMMACULATE too.
I mean you say the story isn't high art, but it came from a visual novel where the story was lauded as high art
Fate has some of the most complex storylines and deepest characters in fiction bro

They both have E rank luck. This isn't the causality reversal attack. If it was, Emiya would be dead.
Cu just chose not to use it. It would be easy, but he wanted to force Archer to beg for forgiveness from Rin first.
His riastrad/warp spasm should give him more firepower but since he's good as a rampaging Berserker while in warp spasm mode he'll probably still lose

While most Archer damage got is from the side effect of Rho Ais, every petal that is broken it self-inflict a damage on it's user

That super powerful arrow that Archer used against Berserker and Caster is a modified version of Caladbolg, which is the sword that killed Cu Chulainn (Lancer) during his life. In other words, it's Lancer's natural weakness, and Archer has unlimited access to it. He could have used it against Lancer and easily won, but instead he chose to engage him in melee combat, both to piss off Lancer and to prove a point to Tohsaka (since she was complaining about failing to summon a Saber). Archer has access to all kinds of weapons, but intentionally chooses to use Kanshou and Bakuya which are only class C noble phantasms, so it can be said that he's almost never trying his hardest throughout this whole series. Not to mention, he also had Unlimited Bladeworks at his disposal, and didn't use it.
