Dragon's Dogma 2: A Modern Masterpiece Ruined by Capcom's Greed

  • "Dragon's Dogma 2" is a classic case of potentially great games being ruined by corporate greed. Underneath the terrible performance on all but the most powerful gaming rigs, questionable microtransactions, and baffling single-save system lies a truly innovative game with outstanding combat, world-building and immersion.
In this video, I explain why Dragon's Dogma 2 could've been Capcom's crowning achievement, but instead fell short due to corporate greed. Capcom is no stranger to controversy, especially considering its history of shoving microtransactions into games that didn't need them. Devil May Cry 5, is the most obvious and noteworthy example.
The first issue is stability. During my 6 hours with Dragon's Dogma 2, I've experienced a few crashes and the game's stability leaves much to be desired. Next, Capcom continues its baffling decision to stick to a single save file system - meaning players need to delete their saves to create a new character, undoing hours of progress unless a file backup is made manually. Finally, I personally believe that microtransactions have no place in single-player games, and seeing them included in a supposedly "hardcore" RPG experience detracts from the challenge and overall immersion.
While this may not cause a gaming goliath like Capcom to crumble, the strong reaction from the community hopefully signals to the executives running these companies that enough is enough. Gamers are fed up with companies trying to take advantage, and antagonistic practices like this need to end.

UPDATE: Dragon's Dogma 2 devs have released a statement on Steam claiming that they're working on a fix for stability issues, and allowing restarts, but this doesn't address the problem of the game being priced at a premium - yet still shipping in a buggy mess filled with Microtransactions. Even in their official response the studio mentioned that all of the items in the microtransactions store are "obtainable in-game". Which is again, not the point of our complaints...
What's even more baffling is the fact that they haven't provided an update on having multiple servers, which is a fundamental mechanic of RPG games.
    ----
Hey everyone, just highlighting that I'm running a pretty high end rig and still experience framedrops of up to 20-30 in the densely populated city areas, and ran into 3+ crashes through my 6 hours of play. Overall, I really hope that once they fix the glaring issues this game will get the recognition it deserves for innovating on the open world RPG formula with a truly living and breathing world.
    Thank you!

The microtransactions are optional and existed even in the first game half of them are technically deluxe edition pre-order bonuses which tbh unless you bought it I don't think you should be able to buy it individually if you didn't pre-order DELUXE EDITION, you can earn most these in-game items with a little effort and no one's forcing you buy them literally meant for lazy people who don't want to earn anything, but ya know ask anyone what you do in Dragons Dogma 2 or what it's about and all people can shout is "Microtransactions" no one cares we asked how the gameplay is not your desire for attention over something that is "OPTIONAL!" p.s. if this microtransaction anger you don't look at Devil May Cry or Dragon Dogma: Dark Arisen DLC :P

The problem with calling capcom greedy is well yes that's true when it comes to optional mtx but it also couldn't be any further from the truth bc monster hunter has had alot of free content added not just any content entire new bosses other devs don't do this so in a odd way they are greedy but also the only company who has ever given as much free content in a game that's not live service unfortunately for you you are a outsider to capcoms games in general atleast it seems because I have a hard time believing they are any more greedy then any company praised higher bc that company doesn't add free content to the extent capcom has sure they have no mtx but they don't add free content like this specifically I am talking about highly praised devs/companies such as Rockstar fromsoft or larian gta added free content to it's online but that doesn't tie into single player progression like monster hunter.

I used to be one of those guys who have no problem with MTX cus the naive me back then parroting the very same thing people are throwing around , " it is optional " , " it is not a requirement to beat the game " . " you can play without it " . But back then game quality was good and the amount of MTX was low . As i get older , i saw how AAA game quality drop down and how the MTX list getting bigger right on day 1 , i start to question why and tell people we the gamer deserve better . But guess what ? People are too contemplated with how the game is a buggy mess on day 1 and normalized MTX , they gaslight the one who have experienced the good old day of gaming , calling them entitled boomer / gamer . That what i get after decade of being fan of Capcom , just to be thrown under the bus because i want quality AAA game that actually matched its price tag.....

Hey hey - thanks so much for the comment my friend. Not sure if Piracy is the way I'd go, but it's just a bit sad that there's so many things I find wrong about Dragon's Dogma 2 right now. Not only do they charge you 70 USD, they also include microtransactions which directly take away from the experience Itsuno san claimed he was trying to make. There's no "consequence" to actions when you can just spend 2 bucks to instant revive against a hard boss IMHO.
People who say just ignore it and don't bother are missing the point, microtransactions in single player games shouldn't be a thing - and this is a hill I'll gladly die on. To cite on of the other commenters "It feels like the game is building in inconveniences that they can then sell you solutions for". That's the practice that I'm fed up with. If the game is meant to be hardcore - let it be hardcore. Limited fast travel, limited revives (if any). Don't dangle the option of convenience in front of players who can't control themselves in an attempt to nickel and dime them out of a few extra bucks.
Either ways, thanks so much for leaving a comment my guy. Really appreciate it and hope you're having a good day - wherever you are!

I’m sorry, I haven’t purchased the game yet but from my understanding all of the micro transactions are items that were made available in the deluxe edition for $10. So you now have the option of purchasing the deluxe items you want instead of purchasing the whole thing. Yes $70 high for a game. I spent $80 filling up my truck, (which will last me 10 days) it cost $50 for me and my wife to see Dune 2. (Which last me 2hrs) From my understanding this game is 100hrs long. What other investment can you pay $70 and get 100hrs of entertainment. The best part is, if you can’t afford it just wait 3 months and you can get the game for $30. By that time hopefully they’ll upgrade some features.

Thank you for confirming that I'm not delusional in feeling this way. To be honest, it's these kind of responses in defending Microtransactions that signals to companies that they can get away with shady practices like charging more for the game and also shipping it WITH microtransactions. I don't know what's their deal, but I like spending my hard earned cash on a game that respects my time as a gamer.
Like I mentioned in some of the other comments and responses, single player games should not ship with microtransactions and that's a hill I will gladly die on. This is especially the case with Dragon's Dogma 2, where the game's difficulty and director's vision is directly at odds with the ability to literally buy your way out of trouble.

🗣🗣🗣SAY it again but louder for the people at the back (the ones still defending greedy corporations that hate them).
But in all seriousness though - the big issue is summarised with another commenter's little nugget of wisdom. Capcom's basically "building in inconvenience" which they can then sell you solutions for. Which in my opinion is wrong on 2 key fronts. First, it takes away from the director's vision of a hardcore experience by being able to buy your way out of trouble. Second, if the items were obtainable in game already, why bother selling them for a few extra bucks when the game is already priced at 70 USD?
I'm just disappointed because underneath these scummy practices is a truly amazing game with awesome combat and an extremely immersive world. Corporate greed just has to ruin everything it touches unfortunately.
If I didn't have to buy this to review it, I won't have spent this amount on the game in it's current state.

Hey - thanks for leaving a comment. I don't think the game itself is terrible and unplayable, in fact I believe that Dragon's Dogma 2 has the potential to be one of Capcom's greatest releases to date. I'm just a little disappointed in the fact that the game launched in a poorly optimised state, and seems to have not improved on fundamental mechanics which are integral to the RPG genre.
Multiple Save files for different characters and playthroughs for example. On the topic of Microtransactions, I just feel that it's unnecessary and doesn't add at all to the experience of playing DD2. Even in Itsuno's interviews he mentioned that he wants Dragon's Dogma 2 to have a sense of realism and consequence - which is just cheapened by being able to pay real world money for instant revives. Again, this is all my perspective and despite this I've had a lot of fun playing the game when it works as intended.

Only then I realised I only had 1 save file and therefore had to choose between undoing hours of progress just to see how things would turn out. Honestly I don't care if this "was done" in the previous game, it doesn't change the fact that this practice is downright annoying. Forcing players to do something manually with the game's files that should've been built into the game as a base functionality is just baffling to me.

So, at first I really disliked the game (mainly the console port feeling of it on PC). However, this review is pretty unfair. First of all, the microtransactions are not game breaking and not particularly in your face. I'd probably forget they existed if it weren't for everyone bitching about them on forums and comments. In 30 hours, I haven't really noticed them being forced in my face or anything and there's no wall that you hit where you feel like you need to spend more money to progress. So pretty much a nonfactor except for those that are triggered by the word. And if you are that triggered over microtransactions, you probably need to find a hobby other than gaming because they are here to stay and only going to get more prevalent as time goes on. What you, I or anyone else wants means just shit because microtransactions are far too profitable to not utilize for the majority of companies.
Second, I haven't noticed any of the 'bugs' that this reviewer claims are 'rampant'. Yes, there are some janky af animations in cutscenes, but that's not a bug since it doesn't affect the gameplay in any way/shape/form. I'm sure there are crashes and stutters, but that's not "rampant". In 30 hours, I haven't had a single crash or any game breaking issues other than occasional pathing issues with my pawns (which you can usually fix by spamming the 'To Me' command). I also have not had any serious performance issues outside of a few random framerate drops in the capital city. However, the game is still perfectly playable and the drops are short-lived (3 seconds or so) and not terrible (down to 40 or so FPS). However, I do run a relatively high-end gaming rig, so that could be part of it as well.

Stuff like no new game, 1 character and all the other inconveniences are 100% profit driven. They want players to see they can't make a new character at the beginning and think they have no choice but to buy an appearance change, they use that same tactic in other games putting things like that in the store as a newbie trap. Not to mention all the other "design choices" they claim are for immersion, like no fast travel without an item, except you can pay them to bypass the need to farm or find anything. It's done like that specifically to create a bunch of small annoyances they can sell you solutions for. If it was some core design element then they would not sell you the ability to ignore it.
But besides that, the performance on PC is awful, for me it was a disaster. Started out, it looked and played great until I got to the first town/camp area and then the visuals became an unsalvageable mess, changing settings did nothing and my PC exceeds the minimum requirements.

The one save slot is a game design decision as it was in the first game. It is lore related and actually encourages replayability, I NEVER did NG+ in games, the only game I cared enough was Bloodborne, other than that I feel it's not worth the trouble. In Dragon's Dogma, NG+ carries over your itens, XP and Vocation levels, which means a game that was completed in 67 hours (my game time as stated in the credits), can now be completed in 20 hours or so, even less if you only do the main quests.
If you care enough about the game to stop your current playthrough, create a different character, play for hours, just to see what a different decision would've led to, then surely you can beat the game first and do all that in NG+, and probably way faster too. Dragon's Dogma respects your time, nothing is lost, you'll never need to face the same problems you had in your first playthrough, because subsequent playthroughs are that much faster and enjoyable.
Also, the game doesn't scale enemies on NG+ (at least on the 1st one it didn't, I am yet to start my NG+ of the second), because it defeats the whole purpose of carrying everything over. It makes farming levels, discipline and materials easier in order to get better gear and prepare for the inevitable DLC that will come.
The loop works for a lot of people, and I don't think making it as all other RPGs would be a good thing, Dragon's Dogma was and thankfully still continues to do it's own thing.

I feel that the game is at it's best when you're just roaming the wilderness with your party and stumbling across cool encounters, monster attacks, or just discovering hidden treasures and caves. Also - love what they've done for the warrior vocation, feels so much more fluid now compared to DDDA. What do you play my friend?

I don't think the MT's are that big of an issue nor are the FPS but I do have a couple of issues with the game & while I admit that it's an awesome game, I'll play it regardless. I was expecting it to be more like its predecessor. It's not outside of similar creatures. and I find this refreshing. I have over 30K on DDDA & I really hope they add a Dark Arisen expansion to the game.
My biggest issue; however, is that you can't start a new game whenever you want. This option alone added multiple hours of play in DDDA.
My second issue is the damage you take while out exploring. This means that you have to rest before you continue. I like going everywhere. There are too many paths, side paths, cliffs to climb, & places to explore. If you need to run back to an inn or a campsite it's hard to find where you left off.
Other than those 2 issues, they'll have to pry my M/K out of my dead hands.

I didn't even realize there were microtransactions until yesterday, and I started playing the second I got the chance Friday morning. I decided to go see what was for sale and I laughed because about half of it already came with the version of the game I bought and I couldn't buy it anyway, because it showed I already owned it and almost all of it is one time purchase.
As for the rest, the game already stuffs your pockets full of Wakestones, you can get Port Crystals easily enough and who gives a shit about Rift Crystals? I wasn't even surprised that there were MT's considering how much I love the Monster Hunter series and there are always BOATLOADS of MT's for MH games.
I'm having a great time with the game on XSX. I feel bad for the people who have performance issues on PC, but I don't feel bad for the people frothing at the mouth over essentially nothing in regards to the MT's.

When I saw this "microtransaction" news, I wondered what microtransactions it could be? Are we really making a scene about in game purchases for already built in game functions? The only transactions I am seeing are those that you can already get in game. If you want the game to be easier, pay for it. I dont find anything wrong with this! I would rather have Capcom given a casual mode with the ability to purchase the things at any vendor and a hardcore mode for how the director meant for this game to be played; but people getting outraged over this, I really dont understand it

  • @gentamionsg
    @gentamionsg 7 месяцев назад

Erm, crash? I don't recall having that issue. But I won't escalate further about that performance issue. Yes, the FPS did drop from times to times but that's only when you are in town. Do you fight in town? Nope. Well, there are times that there will be monster/mob inside the town then you just got to bear with that FPS drop thing.. But if you are lagging even when you are outside of town, er.. I guess, just wait for GPU update or something?.. That's all I can say honestly.
The microtransaction part? Erm, it's not even necessary to have it. You can simply play the standard purchase and still complete the game without any issue. If you have played DD1, you will know most of the enemy's weakness without any issue fighting against them either. Dying? Then run away. Why bother trying to stay alive fighting a losing battle? :x
    So, to sums up,
    1. FPS Issue = Yes. Hopefully Capcom can do something about this. Maybe more pixelated character? For lower graphics? I have friend struggling to play this game because of this issue honestly.
    2. Microtransaction = It's not a pay to win game. If anyone who think it is a pay to win game, well, I got to say, they need to play online game with that stuff. Then maybe, they will understand what is pay to win game. I have never heard a single player game with pay to win mechanic before. :x
    3. There are also some people who complain about having 1 save data too. Let's face it. Even in DD1, it's just 1 save file. Why? Because of your Main Pawn sharing thing. That's why. They can simply have a separate option to show, which pawn will be shared amongst the server, but it might corrupt the Main Pawn sharing in my opinion..
Aside to that, please note that I respect your opinions.

It's not decent at all, we all know because of microtranscation drop is lowered to "encourage" You to buy them. And worst part in interview director commented that he don't like fast travel because You just need to make travel fun. He of course didn't mention about that You can buy fast travel in shop. They make microtranscation active after release to deceive reviewers who got early access. It's reminded me CDPR situation.

    • @b0rk125
      @b0rk125  7 месяцев назад +1

Haha maybe you're right - perhaps I'm also just desensitized to the situation after having microtransactions shoved into games that don't even need them. But what you said makes 100% sense, and is extremely scummy that larger channels which received preview copies weren't aware of the microtransactions till the game's actual launch.
On Itsuno's interview, I also felt it was extremely strange that he said he wanted a game with more realism and consequence - hence the sparing use of fast travel. Then the game releases which not only SELLS Portcrystals needed for fast travel - but even sells one-time use revives. What happened to having "consequences"? If I die to a hard boss or something I didn't prepare for, I can just throw money at the game and I can infinitely respawn? What?
It's just such a waste. If the game fixed all these glaring issues with performance and removed the god-awful microtransactions it's easily one of my favourite RPGs.
Either ways, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! Means a lot for a budding channel like mine :) Hope you stick around for the long run!

The tickets sold in RE 4 remake, another Capcom game btw, would make your weapons super powerful, there is nothing like that in DD2, yet there was zero pushback then, and scorched earth now, why is that? Why didn't people review bomb that game? It's obvious the outrage is very selective when it comes to DD2. And that is my main issue.
We lost the no MTX war 15 years ago. If it's egregious, fine, be mad, but this ain't it. We have about as much hope, of gaining any ground whatsoever, pushing back against unintrusive MTX, as royals do of winning the French Revolution, it's done, it's over. Still if you skip all games with MTX, and take a real stand, I can at least respect that, but be consistent, don't praise RE4, or any other game, ever, with MTX, and review bomb this game. What you believe has absolutely nothing to do with business. If someone wants to buy it so be it. There is nothing wrong you say and yet you make a video based on it. I agree with the lack of the new game and it sucks. Performance does need work and that is the only complaint. The save is there so you can replay from the start. Yes it is not a great system. I personally use a secondary ps5 account to even transfer items between them. IE: I sent my new pawn Meteor and Maelstrom scroll along with the best sorcerer gear to make a nuclear low level pawn. Anyway I understand that this is your opinion but I think people are blowing this out of proportion only to make click content. It's not being held back by anything except Performance.

"I can't believe people are defending MTX"
No...... You're all confused. WE SIMPLE DON'T GAF, and you all trying to MAKE us care about it, is annoying af!! Every item in the MTX store can easily be got in game if you just play the game. And early on to boot. They are so ridiculously easy to get. Nothing is GATED behind MTX... Nothing is forcing you to buy MTX. There's no incentive for MTX unless someone just wants to shortcut the game. Why on EARTH should I give one single flying F, that someone else out there wants to shortcut the game??!!? Give me one logical reason why "I" should care? "It cheapens the game" FOR WHO?!?!?? Why is someone ELSE out there taking premium shortcuts in the game impacting any of you?? I have zero interest in the MTX store. I got all the items in the game just by playing for a day. But yet I'm being bombarded with weird people making a mountain out of an ant hill, who want us to join them in a crusade.... over something so insignificant. OMG just don't bye the MTX!!! Stop caring what other people do with their money. NONE of this impacts any of you. This is the difference..... You're all trying to make something minor a big deal, and we don't care!!!
I literally just saw someone in the comments say "These companies want to nickel and dime us when it’s becoming more and more frustrating to afford living. " Bro HOW?!?!?!?!?!?!!?? How is an optional thing, that takes zero away from the game, that you're literally not forced to buy, and literally DON'T NEED, making it hard for YOU to "afford living"??! This is what I'm talking about, drama for the sake of drama, and content creators that need eyes on their videos capitalizing on drama queens.
Fixing the CPU bottleneck is what I care about.
    "1 save file rabble rabble"
There are 2 clear reason why I also don't care about this. 1) the rift would be flooded with half baked pawns. 2) They clearly want every decision to matter. They auto save after making decisions in quests and the world. It even autosaves THE MOMENT YOU FIRE THE 1 TOUCH DEATH ARROW... the moment it leaves your bow. So if you miss you are SOL. And we know damn well multiple saves just means save scumming. You'd fire the arrow, miss, and just reload an earlier save. You'd do a quest, make a bad choice, then just load an earlier save. They don't want that as an option for this game. And maybe I'd be less annoyed if people would just admit THESE are the things they want to do with the multiple files. But nope, they try to make it about "I want to be different characters" in a game that lets you change your character whenever you want, and be every class in the game whenever you want.
